Casting Round-Up: Shawkat, Weaver, And Pace Continue To Hone Their Craft

Last year’s Animal Kingdom Oscar nominee Jacki Weaver will be joining Oldboy director Park Chan-wook‘s Stoker. The story follows an eccentric girl who finds that her shady uncle may be responsible for many of the disappearances of her neighbors. The film will be Park’s English-language debut and is based on an original script written by Wentworth Miller (!) under the pen name Ted Foulke. (Deadline)

Alia Shawkat, who will always, always be Maeby Funke for the rest of her career, has signed up for two new projects, both of which will continue her streak of indie films. First is her part in the Jonathan Dayton/Valerie Faris film He Loves Me, opposite Paul Dano. She will be playing a girl named Mabel who carries a flame for Dano’s character. Sounds like a whole lotta indie to me! She will also be scoring a role in Raama Mosely’s The Brass Teapot, which sounds like a film I would never, ever see in a million years. Fortunately, the premise is more interesting than the title. It’s about two friends that find a brass teapot that produces cash every time someone feels pain. I would take that shit to the Sudan and watch the money pile up.

Finally, Steven Spielberg‘s Lincoln continues to hire most every actor with a SAG card, today picking up Lee Pace, who you might know from Twilight, or possibly not at all. He will play opportunistic New York mayor Fernando Wood. Because it’s totally believable that someone that was in Twilight could run a city.

iWatch Some New iFootage From Park Chan-Wook’s New iPhone Movie

Violence-lovin’ South Korean filmmaker Chan-wook Park may have the male lead for Fox Searchlight‘s Stoker, his first English language film. Matthew Goode is brutally punching his way through talks to get the part, which actors like Colin Firth, Michael Fassbender, Joel Edgerton and James “I’ll Do It” Franco also circled. Goode will next be seen in this fall’s hippie-free Burning Man.

Stoker is about the strange events that happen when a young girl’s father dies and her long lost uncle moves back into her life. Will the young girl want revenge of some kind? Damn it, I sure hope so. (Variety)

Kidman And Firth To See One Another In A Non-Awards Show Setting

Awards show buddies Colin Firth and Nicole Kidman will be seeing one another in a non-podium situation pretty soon. Both have signed on for Chan Wook-Park’s English-language debut, Stoker.

Mia Wasikowska has already signed on to star as a young girl who has strange things happen when her estranged uncle comes back into her life. The project was written by “Priso Break” and Resident Evil: Afterlife star Wentworth Miller. It only makes sense that Hollywood’s elite would be falling over themselves to work with the guy from “Prison Break.” I mean, those eyes…. (LA Times)

Alice is going through the looking glass, and into the magical, shockingly violent, teeth-pulling world of director Chan-Wook Park (Oldboy). Last seen on his iPhone, shooting an entire feature film with it, Park and his people are negotiating with actress Mia Wasikowska (Alice In Wonderland) for her to star in his Fox Searchlight thriller Stoker. Yeah, if I was Park, I’d wanna stoke-her too.

Heyo, baddum-bum, winks.

The movie is about the “strange things” that occur when a young girl’s father dies and her long lost uncle moves back into her life. By “strange things,” I’m sure that includes lots and lots of murders, along with some graphic sex. And probably a few more murders in there. Park has a reputation to uphold.

Ridley & Tony Scott are producing with Michael Costigan, and Wentworth Miller (Prison Break) wrote the script under the name Ted Foulke. If you asked me whether Wentworth Miller or Ted Foulke was the pseudonym on the game show “Guess Which Name Is My Pseudonym,” I would have lost that year’s supply of Papa John’s Pizza. (Deadline)

Mia Wasikowska To Somehow Make Two More Movies Before Collapsing In Exhaustion

Mia Wasikowska had a busy 2010 with Alice in Wonderland and The Kids Are All Right, and it doesn’t look like 2011 will provide any respite for this poor girl and her hard life. Despite protests from human rights’ groups all over the world, Wasikowska is set to appear in Stoker, the English-language debut of Oldboy director and iPhone user Park Chan-wook, and The Wettest Country in the World, a prohibition drama from director John Hillcoat.

Her tiny arms quivering from overexertion, Wasikowska appeared before the press and said”I am very happy to have the opportunity to work with these fine filmmakers. I am also hungry, please help me.” She was then hurriedly rushed backstage where multiple spectators reported hearing angry shouting and sobbing.

Wasikowska’s next movie is Jane Eyre, which is going to be released into theaters on March 11. If the early returns look good enough, it has been reported that she will be allowed to go outside for an hour or two if she promises to stay quiet. (Collider)
