Just a week after Aaron Sorkin declared that he is done working in television, he may find himself having to return to television. We’ve seen David Fincher, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Christian Bale all leave his untitled Steve Jobs biopic for varying reasons, but now the studio itself has dropped out. Which really could prove to be an impediment.

In the wake of not being able to find an interested leading man, Sony has put the Sorkin joint in turnaround which means they don’t plan to make it any time soon if at all. There are rumors that Universal is interested in picking it up, but until that’s confirmed we should get used to knowing that the world may only get the two Steve Jobs biopics that currently exist. With Christian Bale living up to his surname, Danny Boyle and Sony are back on the hunt for a guy who can play Steve Jobs in their impending Steve Jobs biopic. Their cruising of dating sites and chat rooms has now lead them to X-Men star Michael Fassbender as an actor who they are hoping will elicit an audience response of, “Yeah okay, I can maybe kinda see it.”

Christian Bale just walked away from the project this week, as did Leonardo DiCaprio last month. The studio and director and Fassbender are now in talks. Matthew McConaughey is not currently in contention due to his public stance against turtlenecks and all shirts in general. (Variety)

Like sands through the hourglass, so are the casting rumors surrounding the new Steve Jobs biopic. Just as I had prepared a nice little summary of how the film was quietly coming together, Christian Bale has to go and screw it all up by dropping out of the film.

A THR exclusive states that Christian Bale (more like “Bail,” huh? HUH?) left the project after determining he was “not right for the part.” While that may be true, I have a funnier theory that he bailed right after hearing that Seth Rogen was being considered as a co-star.

It’s unclear how this will affect the production of the film, but considering it took forever and a day to finally land someone to play Steve Jobs, I wouldn’t expect a quick replacement.

Meanwhile, Seth Rogen absentmindedly doodles “Wozniak” all over a notebook, having not yet heard the news.

In news that makes us raise an eyebrow, get a bemused grin, lower our newspaper and go, “Well…all right then,” we’re hearing rumblings that Seth Rogen may be circling the Steve Jobs biopic starring Christian Bale as the iconic tech leader. We discussed his possible casting earlier today, and it’s just one of several interesting aspects of this biopic that could have just as easily limped out of the gate.

As we’ve mentioned, the biopic will be written by Aaron Sorkin and consist of three scenes only, backstage prior to three Apple events. Rogen’s name offers a certain amount of levity and fun to a dry topic, as we’ve seen with Jonah Hill in Moneyball, Jonah Hill in Wolf of Wall Street, and maybe even JT in The Social Network. It merits mentioning that the first and last of those films were written by Sorkin as well. They were also very, very good.

We’ve also got Danny Boyle helming, who’s proven to be an adept story teller, similar in principle to the Coen brothers, steering clear of a signature style to mix things up. He’s gone through a litany of actors to find his Steve Jobs, but that’s likely just from actors not wanting to take on such an iconic character so recently in the pop lexicon. Nobody’s going to pan someone for not getting Abraham Lincoln‘s delivery right, but we all know how Jobs acts and talks. So the actor better nail it, and Christian Bale is known to be very meticulous and very method.

FINALLY, we’ve got news coming forth that Jessica Chastain is being sought in an unspecified role. There is obviously the role of Jobs’ baby mama, and I’m sure that with only three scenes, even the event coordinator could make a meal out of appearing in just one of them. No news yet, but we’ll know soon enough.

This thing really seems to be going from an afterthought in the wake of the Ashton Kutcher treatment to something that really parallels the process behind The Social Network.

Yeah. We’re interested.

Seeing what that Kutcher dude made of the part, Christian Bale is circling playing Apple founder and tech icon Steve Jobs in an upcoming biopic from Danny Boyle. The film is based on Walter Issacson’s biography Steve Jobs.

The movie has an interesting slant for a biopic. The entire film will be comprised of three scenes, set at different times in Jobs’ life, backstage before giving one of his famed presentations. Sounds more interesting than just covering childhood to death. The first scene will come before the unveiling of the Mac, the second one, NeXt, while Jobs was away from Apple, and the third being the launch of the iPod.

Ok. Even though the life of Steve Jobs is pretty well-worn territory, this sounds like an amazing team tackling his life in a new way.

INTERESTED.

If you were getting all fired up at the prospect of Leo DiCaprio reuniting with his The Beach director Danny Boyle, you might want to take a seat. Or maybe sit cross-legged on the floor. Anything to keep you from crashing to the floor when we tell you:

Leo has walked away from his role as Apple founder and turtleneck enthusiast Steve Jobs in the untitled biopic to be helmed by the 127 Hours helmer and written by Aaron Sorkin.

DiCaprio is taking a break from acting after his new upcoming role in The Revenant, leaving the starring spot in the film up for grabs. This comes after David Fincher stepped away from the same gig as director back in the spring. But word from THR is that Sony is looking at Matt Damon, Bradley Cooper, and Ben Affleck as possible replacements. No word on whether they’re looking back at the studio with interest in the part that has already been peed on territorially by Ashton Kutcher, but that should give us something to talk about until substantiated casting news comes in.

Also, no word on how this will affect his Richard Jewell film that has been building momentum, but we should have news in the next couple days.

David Fincher has walked away from the Steve Jobs biopic. I like to think that he filmed himself doing this in a long, twelve-minute Steadicam shot.

Sony Pictures is looking to replace Fincher, who was asking for a “ridiculous” fee according to studio insiders. The problem stemmed from not only money, but also control. Here Fincher is trying to oversee how the film’s marketing will be handled – a wish granted in the past that resulted in the loss of hundreds of thousands of dollars.

A charming source told THR,  “You’re not doing Transformers here. You’re not doing Captain America. This is quality — it’s not screaming commerciality. He should be rewarded in success but not up front.”

In all fairness, you can’t buy groceries with Oscar gold. Just ask Cuba Gooding, Jr..

David Fincher is a scarce, previous natural resource. He’s one of the few directors that can take non-academic or non-intellectual material and turn it into an art form. Which is why it’s always a little disheartening to hear him attached to a project that doesn’t just blow me away. So the news that he’s circling another Steve Jobs biopic, and is eying Christian Bale as the lead isn’t too exciting.

The story of the Apple founder has been told recently in his obituaries, his biography, and that Ashton Kutcher film Jobs. It can be told again, but hopefully later, and by someone else.

Oh, and the film will be written by Aaron Sorkin, which means it won’t exactly have a deft hand when it comes the dialogue.

Maybe it’s time for Fincher to look at This Is 40, Tyler Durden. I’d watch that.

Aaron Sorkin is ‘strongly considering’ penning the screenplay for Sony‘s Steve Jobs biopic based on the recent biography Steve Jobs.

So far, he hasn’t committed to the project, but said at the P.S. Arts Express Yourself Festival:

“Right now I’m just in the thinking-about-it stages. It’s a really big movie and it’s going to be a great movie no matter who writes it.”

Sorkin is now just in the process of reading Walter Isaacson’s biography of the Apple founder and global icon, so let’s not lean on him too hard until he finishes the book, ok? We all know how annoying it can be when someone’s all “Have you finished that book yet? Isn’t it great?”

Well, just imagine that someone is Sony Pictures, and they want you to write their movie. Ugh. That’s worse than any book club.

Aaron Sorkin is being courted for his ability to write about nerds. The Social Network screenwriter has been approached by Sony for their Steve Jobs biopic. The studio snatched up the rights to the Apple CEO’s biography (which was recently rushed to bookstore shelves) about two days after he lost his fight to pancreatic cancer, and are wooing Sorkin for the project.

It makes sense. Sorkin is no stranger to Jobs, having written a remembrance of the man who once approached him to write for Pixar. However, is this project too Aaron Sorkin-y? He’s handled similar subject matter before, and given his personal connection, he might feel compromised when attempting to approach the story from an objective position, especially if he does his writing on a Mac. Because the internet news cycle dictates that we report all things Jobs and Apple until 6 PM PDT today, we bring you news that Steve Jobs biography, which has been rushed since news of his death broke, has been optioned as a film by Sony Pictures.

The book, intuitively titled Steve Jobs, clocks in at 448 pages and is comprised of interviews with over 40 of his friends, family, and co-workers. Since the book isn’t released for a few weeks, it’s hard to know what to expect from a movie. I would assume it’s going to be like Ray or Walk the Line, but with a lot more turtlenecks and iPhones.

No joking around, kids. It’s a really sad day.

While the iPad isn’t intended solely as a video player, the ability to watch a film or television show anywhere there’s a WiFi connection would have been unheard of just a few years ago. Combined with streaming video technology, the device has radically altered the entertainment landscape, creating an appetite for instantaneous consumption of film and television shows, and challenging the need for set broadcast times and the theatrical release of films.

Final Cut Pro

No longer do you need to have film-editing equipment to make yourself a movie. All you need is a digital camera and a bootlegged copy of Final Cut Pro. The product revolutionized the world of film, making viral videos, webisodes, fan series and truly independent film in the reach of anyone who can point and shoot. Perhaps more than any other product in film history, Final Cut Pro leveled the playing field, democratizing the world of film.

The buzzing device in your pocket has likely alerted you to the fact that Apple co-founder and former CEO, Steve Jobs has passed away. The man responsible for changing the way the world communicates, innovates, and entertains succumbed to pancreatic cancer at the age of 56.

Having previously served as the chief executive of Pixar Animation Studios, Jobs helped to radically redefine what an animated film can be. Breathtaking visuals weren’t enough. There needed to be heart as well. This ethic lead to the creation of several memorable characters and unforgettable films. Films that have impacted children and adults alike.

Jobs will be sorely missed but will live on as a symbol of invention and ingenuity. Our condolences to those who loved him and those he loved. This is sadder than the first ten minutes of Up.

By now you’ve probably heard the news that Steve Jobs is retiring from his position as the CEO of Apple. And there’s a good chance you heard the news while using a product that Jobs himself helped develop.

No reason was given for his departure, but sadly, it is most likely the result of his ongoing battle with pancreatic cancer. And the fact that one of the richest, most powerful men in the world can’t buy his way out of death is a real son of a bitch, at least in my opinion. But rather than sit around and contemplate the frailty of human life, I think our time would be better spent watching the following five Apple related technology videos, don’t you? Good. Very good.

1984

This famous Apple ad introduced the world to the Macintosh, and is widely considered one of the greatest marketing campaigns of all time. Ridley Scott directed the spot, which cost nearly $900,000, a ridiculous amount to spend by early 80′s standards. If you don’t get the 1984 references, or the Macintosh references, for that matter, chances are you need to pay more attention in History class.

David Lynch

While the cool kids seem to love all things “Mac,” not everyone is a fan. As director David Lynch points out, this is especially true when it comes to watching movies.
