Directed by first-timer Brian A. Miller, Officer Down tells the story of a doctor and a security guard who see one another’s daily lives while dream. Their paths cross when the security guard murders his wife, gets hit by a car and is brought into the ER. It could happen to any of us. Boreanaz will play an ambitious rival to Stephen Dorff‘s detective character. Also starring are Dominic Purcell, James Wood, Stephen Lang and AnnaLynne McCord. So, at the very least it has the James Woods stamp of quality. (Deadline)

Immortals stars Henry “Super Brit” Cavill, Stephen Dorff Mickey Rourke, and is directed by Tarsem Singh (“The Cell”). The film has an impossible-to-remember release date of 11-11-11.

The elder Fanning is joining The Motel Life opposite Emile Hirsch and her sister’s Somewhere co-star Stephen Dorff. In the film, Hirsch and Dorff star at brothers on the run after a deadly hit and run. There’s no word on who Fanning will play but I’ll take a stab in the dark and say jailbait hitchhiker who divides the pair. Now please excuse me while I clear my recent browsing history. (Variety)

Y’know. Like, he likes these kinds of roles. Seems like a character he’d be interested in playing, is what I’m trying to say. I certainly wasn’t insinuating that Dorff would be involved in a hit-and-run accident. And definitely not one directly outside Bar Marmont that occurred between the hours of 2 and 3a.m. this morning. Welcome to Sofia Coppola’s inside Hollywood. We love inside Hollywood stories, whether it’s The Player or Entourage. Each one offers a different perspective on the movie star fantasy. Coppola’s perspective is bitter and resentful, but still fascinating to watch.

Johnny Marco (Stephen Dorff) is an actor who indulges in debauchery any time he’s not working. He’s that type of guy you see, in way too good shape for how much he drinks, all stubbly and disheveled, handsome but absolutely nothing going on in there. Maybe a girl could fix him.

The film revels in how aloof Johnny is. He drinks, he smokes, he’ restless. He hires twin blonde strippers (Karissa and Kristina Shannon) to dance for him and just stares indirectly at them, or away from them. It’s open to interpretation. Johnny passes out while going down on another girl.

A scene about journalists goes way past irreverence. I would call it contempt and I don’t mind. Journalists at a press conference fire off questions without even waiting for answers. You’ll find it funny and the reality is actually not that interesting. Real inane journalist questions aren’t that amusing, and they do insist on hearing the answer before moving on.

Johnny is paranoid about the paparazzi stalking him. Hopeful actors hit him up for advice at parties.  Maybe it feels authentic because it’s Coppola, or maybe it’s just the right amount of intrusive behavior to be interesting.

This film can’t exist without the context of Lost in Translation though. It’s another character of an actor who feels unfulfilled and mopes through life, only now it’s in L.A. Somewhere is all about the same long scenes where characters just exist, and it’s still compelling. Somehow, Johnny is fascinating to watch. I hate this guy, but I’m captivated.

Johnny’s daughter Cleo (Elle Fanning) stays with him for a few days before summer camp. Johnny really lights up for Cleo. There’s some life in him after all, but the film seems to hold him without responsibility, like he’s innocent and helpless. He could DO something.

The performance is good though. Dorff doesn’t take the easy way to sympathy and ultimately earns that one moment that you know is going to be his Oscar consideration clip.

You can tell Somewhere is a quality movie made by a real filmmaker with intent. Coppola makes good shots out of common actions, whether it’s going into an apartment building or banging the headboard during sex. The film leaves enough unspoken and the dialogue that’s there is filled with history.

I don’t see Somewhere captivating people long term like Coppola’s previous movies do, mainly because it’s so similar. Maybe if this came first, but once Lost in Translation exists, the next iteration of it is only a curiosity. A good one though, a valid perspective on similar themes.

He definitely has a type.

Stephen Dorff is saying things. Now that he’s poised for a comeback thanks to his starring turn in Sofia Coppola‘s Somewhere, he’s looking toward the future by not appearing in crappy movies anymore. And what do you do with a sudden influx of critical acclaim? Parlay that into working on crappy movies with Adam Sandler, of course.

Dorff is currently developing and writing a comedy for Happy Madison, with the hopes of drafting good buddy Jack Nicholson to co-star. Because if there’s one thing on Nicholson’s bucket list, it’s appear in Untitled Stephen Dorff Comedy Project. He’s mum on the details, but had this to say:

“It’s a very funny comedy idea for me and him set in the South of France. We’re not in script form yet but I wrote the treatment and [the idea has] already [been] bought it so as soon as I get break from working, I’ll turn that into a script and I’ll go and tell Jack,” he says, knocking on the wooden table between us, “‘Jack you have to make this with me…’ and he’ll say, ‘Dorff, come on, let’s do it.’”

He then quieted the voices in his head by smearing a lipstick Joker smile across his face and adding, “Wait til they get a load of me. Wait til they ALL get a load of me.” Then he just looked out the window and it was weird. (The Independent)

Stephen Dorff is all set to carjack Maria Bello. No silly, the actor isn’t turning to desperate measures, he’s got an honest-to-goodness job. Carjacked revolves around “a single mother and her child who are carjacked by a thief who has no intention of letting them go.” Ron Perlman and Saffron Burrows were once set to play the jacker and jackee, but execs had a hard time believing anyone would stay in a car with Ron Perlman (Check out Ron Perlman’s 9 Greatest Scowls) all night, even against their will. The man’s a great actor, but me oh my, what a face.

Take the car, take the kid, whatever you want! Just stop breathing on me! (Collider)

Sofia Coppola is up to her old tricks again, pointing a camera at people bored by hotel stays. Somewhere stars Stephen Dorff as a lazy bones actor laying around all the time at Hollywood’s Chateau Marmont Hotel who’s life is reinvigorated by the unexpected presence of his daughter. I guess I should point out that she’s played by Elle Fanning, but I won’t because I hate when children are more successful that I am. So unread that last sentence.

Coppola wants you to think she’s making a point with the plaster mold drying shot (aren’t we all just waiting around for our own soul plaster to harden?), but I see the bigger picture. The laying around. The kitty-cat awards show. Stephen Dorff is obviously channeling Garfield. This will become obvious once you see the scene where he kicks Robert Schwartzman off a table.
