Fan favorite Warwick Davis was, for a day or two, the subject of rumors that he would appear in the next installment of Star Wars, Star Wars: Episode VII. Then, yesterday, he posted a YouTube video saying, yes, he was cast in the film.

Good news for fans of both the film and the actor. And this video he used to confirm the rumors is pretty cute, too. Davis has appeared in a couple of the other Star Wars installments, as both an Ewok, and as Wald in Episode I. But he’s best known for his tile roles in Willow and Leprechaun, as well as the starring role in HBO’s Life’s Too Short.

Welcome back to Star Wars, Warwick.

Seems like every week, new cast info emerges — interesting or otherwise — on the upcoming Star Wars trilogy. The production is such nerd enchantment that it makes the upcoming Avengers: Age of Ultron movie look like a farming documentary. Most fanboys seem pretty content with their high priest J.J. Abrams at the helm, but as can be expected, there’s a boatload of scrutiny in the comments section of any article about the cast.

There’s a lot riding on Star Wars: Episode VII. Abrams and company can either bolster the legacy of the Holy Trilogy (and make folks forget about its far inferior prequel trilogy) or they could pull some Jar-Jar Binks s**t and forever sport the ire of grown men who finished undergrad before ever getting laid.

We’ll all find out next December. Meanwhile, here’s the lowdown on all the confirmed stars so far:

Lupita Nyong’o – Role Unannounced We at Screen Junkies are truly thrilled to see Lupita getting all the props she deserves from her Oscar-winning turn in 12 Years a Slave. But that means nothing if her as-yet-unannounced role is of Jar-Jar Binks’ long-lost offspring. Everyone will come after that Oscar with pitchforks faster than they came after Halle after Catwoman.

Gwendoline Christie - Role Unannounced This is a fantastic hire, since Christie’s Brienne of Tarth is one of the best characters among a lot of great ones on the fantastic Game of Thrones. I hope they don’t douse her in a bunch of makeup for her role, because her face is a commanding presence. She’d be absolutely kick-ass in a lightsaber duel.

John Boyega – Role Unannounced Don’t know much about this guy or if that many people on this side of the pond caught him in any of his four roles to date. Presumably, he was tapped after his performance in British horror-comedy Attack the Block. Check out the funny fan-made scene above of Boyega wielding a lightsaber in place of a bat in a scene from that movie.

Daisy Ridley – Role Unannounced The rumor mill has Ridley, a British television star who could probably sit down in your living room and go unrecognized, as one of the lead characters in the entire trilogy. Daughter of Han and Leia, perhaps? To be plucked from relative obscurity to go to the front of the bus in the most anticipated franchise return in decades? No pressure, dear…

Adam DriverRole Unannounced Perhaps the only part of HBO’s Girls that doesn’t qualify as a hate-watch, Driver’s career has picked up substantially in the last year or so; word is he’s going to be somewhere on the Dark Side of things for Episode VII, which means there’s a decent chance he’ll be defeated by the film’s conclusion and not make it to the rest of the trilogy. Which would be a damn shame.

Oscar Isaac – Role Unannounced This guy came from out of nowhere and blew everyone away with his titular role in the Coen BrothersInside Llewyn Davis from last year. The Star Wars series is not exactly known for its dramatic heft or acting chops (the last trilogy did have Hayden Christensen in a lead role, after all), so I’m excited to see what Isaac brings to the table.

Andy SerkisRole Unannounced If Serkis is involved, that means there will be some serious motion capture work in the new movie. Since everything he touches turns to gold these days, the cred he adds to the series is invaluable.

Domhnall Gleeson – Role Unannounced I would be more excited if his horribly underrated dad Brendan were in the series, but Domhnall showed some interesting promise of a career to come in last year’s About Time. Listen to him explain in his Irish brogue how scared he is of talking about Star Wars at all.

On the next page: A bunch of grizzled veterans and another cute British girl you’ve never heard of.

Even with the aid of “medicinal” marijuana, Harrison Ford has a long road to recovery after the Millenium Falcon crushed his leg last week. The 71-year-old actor broke his ankle on the Star Wars: Episode VII set when a hydraulic door on the spaceship malfunctioned and fell on him. It’s expected that Han Solo will miss “as many as eight weeks of filming” though his time in traction will not impact the release date of Dec. 18, 2015.

Let me be super-clear. Karen Gillan, the human being, has NOT been cast by J.J. Abrams in Star Wars: Episode VII. However, the hair that was formally attached to Karen Gillan, the human being, will be seen in the film. Perhaps as a love interest for Chewbacca?

The Oculus and Doctor Who actress shaved her head for Guardians of the Galaxy and the guys at Marvel couldn’t stand to see all that beautiful hair go to waste. Gillan tells Collider:

Was it just very liberating to shave your head, or did you have any moments of tears while they were doing it?

GILLAN: No, I was laughing hysterically. It really hit me when I woke up the next morning. That’s when I was like, “Oh, my god, where’s my hair?!” But also, everyone kept me in good spirit. Everyone was laughing and telling jokes. Marvel are the best company to work for, they really are. They treat you really well. They made my hair into the most incredible well-made wig and they gave it to the Star Wars people. It’s just so funny to think that my hair is made into a wig, next to all these Star Wars monster heads in a warehouse. I thought that was really funny.

Let that be a note to obsessive fans. Gillan doesn’t care if you mess with her hair. Have at it.

Those concerned that some unknown would be sweating beneath the Star Wars: Episode VII Chewbacca mask may rest assured. The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that 70-year old Peter Mayhew will return to the role that made him a household name in the J.J. Abrams-directed sequel. The events of the film will take place thirty years after Return of the Jedi which means that Chewbacca‘s entire body could now a comb-over. Of course, J.J. Abrams will neither confirm nor deny this. Eureka! We have a piece of information in the predictably secretive Star Wars Episode VII. And we shared it in the title, but in case you’re a title-skimmer, let’s go over it again: Star Wars Episode VII will take place 30 years after the events in Return of the Jedi.

Which I suppose means that the characters, the human ones, at least will either be dead or very old in this iteration. However, considering that Jedi was released in 1983, they could ostensibly cast all the actors that appeared in the original.

But, geez, I hope they don’t do that. I don’t pay $14/ticket to stare at old people for 90 minutes. Well, I did for Cocoon, Last Vegas, and Red 2, but those were all exceptions.

No other details about Star Wars were released, but we’ll be back with even the slightest piece of non-news. You have our word.

Oldman confirms that he’s been approached to appear in the next sequel but doesn’t really believe it himself. “They’ve called,” Oldman confirmed to Sky Movies. “I’m more cynical about it now. I’ll believe it when I’m on the plane home. The deal isn’t done. But, yeah, they’ve… inquired, yeah.” And even at that point, they could still make him unrecognizable with CGI just to be dicks.

The hard part is over. Now the producers and Disney just need to: Decide the plot, rewrite the script, recast the actors, film it, decide on a global marketing strategy, implement that strategy, and they’re all done.

So there’s plenty left to do before DECEMBER 18, 2015 IN THE YEAR OF OUR LORD!

What?!?!? CHRISTMAS-TIME RELEASE.

That’s a pretty sick release date, Disney. Well done.

Of course, such a great release date doesn’t come without a cost. In this instance, that cost would be grave concern by producers that they won’t be able to complete the film by then.

Oh well. No one will really care what happens in the film, so long as IT’S DELIVERED ON DECEMBER 18, 2015.

A new video has surfaced where J.J. Abrams has finally copped to using lens flare far too often in his films and agreeing to ease back on the technique. Just in time to make a movie where swords are made out of lasers.

I think this is good though. Abrams was really hitting the lens flare pretty hard. He was like an Intro to Photoshop student with that stuff. Doing whatever it takes to chase the next flare and not caring who gets hurt in the process. At least now he can admit it. It’s so rare to see a celebrity admitting they have a problem and taking positive steps to make a change.

Once again displaying his inhuman ability to be really classy and diplomatic, J.J. Abrams laid out his hopes for Star Wars: Episode VII without outright shitting all over Lucas’s prequels. That takes tremendous restraint.

Abrams told Entertainment Weekly, “It’s been nice see that how important it is and to be reminded how important it is to so many people. We all know that [George Lucas's] dream has become almost a religion to some people. I remember reading a thing somewhere, someone wrote about just wanting [the new film] to feel real; to feel authentic. I remember I felt that way when I was 11 years old when I saw the first one. As much of a fairy tale as it was, it felt real. And to me, that is exactly right.”

Refreshing to know that he aims to make a movie for the 11-year old in all of us, instead of a movie for all the 11-year olds.

With all the will they/won’t they speculation surrounding Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, and Mark Hamill returning for the Star Wars sequel, we all forgot to needlessly ask aloud whether or not Warwick Davis would be crammed into a costume again. The answer is yes, assuming they ask. After playing Wicket the Ewok in Return of the Jedi and a little kid version of Greedo in Phantom Menace, Davis has expressed his interest in returning to the galaxy far, far away. But he has some terms.

“I love to perform so to be able to go back into something like Star Wars… what a lovely thing that would be to say, that I’ve been in all three trilogies. I’m not dying to get back inside an Ewok suit. I’m happy to play a villain perhaps, [or] a Jedi. A villain with a light saber is the ultimate goal, if that’s not asking too much. I never got a light saber before and I think just to have one of them, to be able to wave one of them around a little bit, would be huge. I’m dropping loads of hints at the moment, so we’ll see what happens.”

If having a miniature Sith Lord doesn’t work out with the next film’s storyline perhaps he can arm himself with a lightsaber in a sequel to Leprechaun In Space or something. The fans would allow it. (IGN)

When Kathleen Kennedy took the Star Wars franchise from the slippery hands of George Lucas, she recognized that she had a lot of work to do to revitalize the series. It only makes sense to bring in a creative force with experience in breathing new life into stale properties. Enter J.J. Abrams.

Who quickly exited.

The Mission: Impossible and Star Trek resuscitator recently explained to Empire his decision to turn down the Star Wars: Episode VII directing gig.

“There were the very early conversations, and I quickly said that, because of my loyalty to Star Trek and also just being a fan, I wouldn’t even want to be involved in the next version of those things. I declined any involvement very early on. I’d rather be in the audience not knowing what was coming, rather than being involved in the minutiae of making them.”

It was later revealed that Kennedy asked Abrams to lunch to ask if Chris Pine was dating anybody seriously. He left before coffee. (THR)
