Seems like every week, new cast info emerges — interesting or otherwise — on the upcoming Star Wars trilogy. The production is such nerd enchantment that it makes the upcoming Avengers: Age of Ultron movie look like a farming documentary. Most fanboys seem pretty content with their high priest J.J. Abrams at the helm, but as can be expected, there’s a boatload of scrutiny in the comments section of any article about the cast.

There’s a lot riding on Star Wars: Episode VII. Abrams and company can either bolster the legacy of the Holy Trilogy (and make folks forget about its far inferior prequel trilogy) or they could pull some Jar-Jar Binks s**t and forever sport the ire of grown men who finished undergrad before ever getting laid.

We’ll all find out next December. Meanwhile, here’s the lowdown on all the confirmed stars so far:

Lupita Nyong’o – Role Unannounced We at Screen Junkies are truly thrilled to see Lupita getting all the props she deserves from her Oscar-winning turn in 12 Years a Slave. But that means nothing if her as-yet-unannounced role is of Jar-Jar Binks’ long-lost offspring. Everyone will come after that Oscar with pitchforks faster than they came after Halle after Catwoman.

Gwendoline Christie - Role Unannounced This is a fantastic hire, since Christie’s Brienne of Tarth is one of the best characters among a lot of great ones on the fantastic Game of Thrones. I hope they don’t douse her in a bunch of makeup for her role, because her face is a commanding presence. She’d be absolutely kick-ass in a lightsaber duel.

John Boyega – Role Unannounced Don’t know much about this guy or if that many people on this side of the pond caught him in any of his four roles to date. Presumably, he was tapped after his performance in British horror-comedy Attack the Block. Check out the funny fan-made scene above of Boyega wielding a lightsaber in place of a bat in a scene from that movie.

Daisy Ridley – Role Unannounced The rumor mill has Ridley, a British television star who could probably sit down in your living room and go unrecognized, as one of the lead characters in the entire trilogy. Daughter of Han and Leia, perhaps? To be plucked from relative obscurity to go to the front of the bus in the most anticipated franchise return in decades? No pressure, dear…

Adam DriverRole Unannounced Perhaps the only part of HBO’s Girls that doesn’t qualify as a hate-watch, Driver’s career has picked up substantially in the last year or so; word is he’s going to be somewhere on the Dark Side of things for Episode VII, which means there’s a decent chance he’ll be defeated by the film’s conclusion and not make it to the rest of the trilogy. Which would be a damn shame.

Oscar Isaac – Role Unannounced This guy came from out of nowhere and blew everyone away with his titular role in the Coen BrothersInside Llewyn Davis from last year. The Star Wars series is not exactly known for its dramatic heft or acting chops (the last trilogy did have Hayden Christensen in a lead role, after all), so I’m excited to see what Isaac brings to the table.

Andy SerkisRole Unannounced If Serkis is involved, that means there will be some serious motion capture work in the new movie. Since everything he touches turns to gold these days, the cred he adds to the series is invaluable.

Domhnall Gleeson – Role Unannounced I would be more excited if his horribly underrated dad Brendan were in the series, but Domhnall showed some interesting promise of a career to come in last year’s About Time. Listen to him explain in his Irish brogue how scared he is of talking about Star Wars at all.

On the next page: A bunch of grizzled veterans and another cute British girl you’ve never heard of.

Godzilla managed to perform strongly at the box office and did generally well critically, so the question of a sequel was more “if” than “when.” Yesterday, Legendary Pictures gave us the “when.” June 8, 2018.

It’s a long way off, and studios normally like to crank these things out before audiences catch on to the next big thing and leave giant lizard movies in the dust. So why the long lead time?

Because director Gareth Edwards has to go make the second Star Wars film first. And those are fairly high-profile films, so maybe they don’t want to rush him? As big as Godzilla was, it’s a drop in the bucket compared to the money that Star Wars can bring in across various platforms.

So it all comes down to money. Remember when Star Wars and Godzilla films were about the art? I don’t, but I assume they may have been at one point.

Big ups to fanboy (and especially fangirl) fave Benedict Cumberbatch, who, despite his upright British manner and role selection, seems to be something of a giant goofball. In this interview, with little prompting, Benedict, who calls himself a bit of a poseur when it comes to fanboy culture, offers up not one, but two killer impressions.

The first, as mentioned in the title, is nobody’s favorite Star Wars character, Jar-Jar Binks. The second, slightly more understandable impression, is Gollum from Lord of the Rings.

Take a look and fall in love with Cumberbatch all over again.

In case you haven’t heard, J.J. Abrams is directing the new Star Wars film. Also in case you haven’t heard, J.J. Abrams likes to use the same actors in different films. So at Comic-Con, when Benedict Cumberbatch (who starred alongside Pegg in Abrams’ Star Trek into Darkness) mentioned that Simon Pegg is among the unannounced cast in the next Star Wars, no one was too taken aback.

In short order, Pegg was asked about his participation by Vulture, and his answer was non-committal enough that he’s almost certainly doing it. When asked, Pegg responded:

“Well, J.J. uses me in different roles, and we’re good friends. I feel like my face in Star Wars would pop people out of the movie. Look, I love Star Wars, and I don’t want people to watch and go, Oh, there’s Simon Pegg’s face. The film is cleverly cast with these amazing, unknown actors.”

Jeez, Simon. We get it. You’re going to be in it, but your face isn’t. HE’S THE NEW C-3PO!

In this age of superhero blockbuster decadence, it doesn’t even seem possible to make things too big. The Avengers represents like five franchises, Batman is fighting Superman, and the crossover opportunities seem endless.

However, could worlds really collide to bring us Superman in a Star Wars world? Or, far less likely, vice versa?

Almost certainly not, but when Zack Snyder Tweeted out this image of the Man of Steel holding a lightsaber, it sure did get people talking about what’s to be discussed at his upcoming panel at Comic-Con.

Of course, Warner Bros works with DC, and Disney owns Marvel (and Star Wars), so there’s no natural fit, nor is there much incentive for Disney to play nice with the enemy.

But still, you’ve got our attention you crafty marketer, Mr. Snyder. So what the hell does this represent, other than our gullibility?

It’s always fun to watch our the Comedy Central news team (Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart) geek out, though Jon Stewart should know from Colbert’s Tolkien rants that he’s not to be trifled with. So enjoy them arguing about who likes Star Wars more.

And if you don’t care for the geekier things in life, there’s still of plenty of comedy here to satisfy. And if you don’t find their brand of humor funny – you’re making this really difficult, by the way – you can do it for the UNICEF cause that feeds and aids children across the world.

I’m pretty sure that Star Wars will continue to make casting announcements even after the film hits theaters in December 2015. There is no end to the list of people acting in this film.

So while Harrison Ford’s ankle injury has hamstrung the production for a couple weeks, the producers decided to take that time to do what they do best: Hire more actors. The lucky two who go the nod this time around are American Crystal Clarke and British actor Pip Andersen. Lucky them.

We would discuss and speculate what role they’ll play, but it’s a J.J. Abrams film, which means that none of us have any idea what it will be about anyway, so we’ll just assume that Crystal will sit on Pip’s shoulders and together they will play Chewbacca.

That’s reasonable, right?

Even though they’ve been filming for a couple weeks, the producers of Star Wars aren’t ready to let the casting rumors and hype die down just yet. Today, news came out that Lupita Nyong’o will be joining the cast. Because it’s a J.J. Abrams project, and those projects are super-secret, we don’t know the plot of the film or the role Nyong’o will play in it.

We’ll also be getting Gwendoline Christie, who plays the giant warrior Brienne in Game of Thrones. My guess is that she’ll be painted black and portray the Death Star, but my guesses are normally terrible.

The movie will premiere in December of 2015, which will probably be about the time come to terms with the fact that Brienne, along with every other Game of Thrones character, has been fed to bears by Littlefinger.

Wow. Barely escaped that one. We lost a lot of good men and fish people. At any rate, the cast (pictured above at the table read) now officially includes Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, Kenny Baker, John Boyega, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Daisy Ridley, Domhnall Gleeson, Max von Sydow, and the previously announced Karen Gillan’s hair. Beyond the returning cast, its unknown what roles the new additions will play but I think it would be pretty awesome if Andy Serkis plays Yoda‘s nephew who beneath his street tough exterior is a good kid crying out for help. If we knew what the movie was about, we could speculate wildly on what her role might be, but for now, we’ll just have to settle for “Lupita Nyong’o might be in the next Star Wars movie.”

Word is that she actually met with director J.J. Abrams before she won the Oscar, so her inclusion might not be as opportunistic as us cynics would immediately think. She recently lost the role of Tiger Lilly in Pan to Rooney Mara, so there’s a spot open in her schedule for a huge blockbuster starring role. There’s a hole in my schedule for that, too, but I don’t think I’ll have as much luck as Lupita.

Because J.J. Abrams is always working on and promoting about 1,000 different projects, it’s very difficult for him to lay low and stay quiet about something. FOR INSTANCE…

When he was at the NBC’s TCA presentation (supporting his show Believe), it turned out that the press was slightly more interested in the goings on as regard the seventh Star Wars film than they were about some show with a dumb name that J.J. Abrams is trying to trick us into watching by being involved with it.

When asked about the progress of the film, “We’re working really hard and we’ve got our script and we’re in deep prep. Full steam ahead,” said Abrams. Whether or not was wearing overalls and a conductor’s hat when he said that, then proceeded to make “chuggahchuggah” noises as he shuffled out of the room…that…that wasn’t available at press time.

Abrams also confirmed that he had spoken with Jesse Plemmons regarding a role, I believe also merits the “chuggahchuggah” sound effect.

After stealing two shows with acclaimed supporting roles in Breaking Bad and Friday Night Lights, Jesse Plemmons is looking to undo the damage done by his participation in Battleship by starring in a film that might not be awful.

Rumors from The Wrap suggest that he’s meeting with J.J. Abrams this week to discuss starring in the new Star Wars film. Plemmons apparently impressed the producers with his audition tape, and is up for one of two roles. We don’t know what roles those would be, since the plot is unknown, possibly even to the cast and crew, so let’s just assume that they’re considering him for young Mace Windu.

Or the guy that imprisons JarJar after befriending him, only to get strangled by JarJar as he makes a final bid for escape.

We have no idea, but it sounds like he’ll be in the movie somehow.

Tupac Shakur, the iconic gangster rapper who was enjoying a burgeoning film career at the time of his death, reportedly auditioned for the role of Mace Windu in Star Wars Episode One: The Phantom Menace.

This just in: This story is awesome.

The news of his auditioned and consideration for the part came from Death Row engineer Rick Clifford and hasn’t yet been substantiated. Nonetheless, the story is cool. Clifford said that Samuel L. Jackson got 2Pac’s part, which we shouldn’t hold against Jackson, if only because 2Pac was dead when the project got around to filming.

Given the reputation of 2Pac, and in laying that against the reputation of the Phantom Menace, it’s probably for the best that he didn’t make an appearance.

Allegedly.

The set of Tattoine, which has long served as a dorky tourist attraction for Star Wars fans who find themselves in Tunisia (but why?), will soon succumb to sand that is migrating towards the structures at an amazing breakneck pace of 4 cm per day.

Unless something is done (sandbags?), the area will be covered in sand in about two years, which would torpedo any hope of filming future films there.

We’ve only got so much bandwidth in our lives to care about things, and it’s up to you to decide if you want this to be one of those things.

Before Disney bought the franchise, George Lucas had been kicking around a Star Wars TV show. Though the idea never got to pilot, it’s now come to light that a concept video had been made, and while it’s a little light on the plot details, it appears to have a decent budget behind it, and it has a light sabre fight.

Which is really all you need. In light of the onslaught of five Star Wars films coming our way, it’s probably a good thing that we don’t have this series as well. But it’s still nice to look at.

Considering how much they paid for the franchise, it’s no wonder that Disney is looking beyond J.J. Abrams’ Episode VII to an annual Star Wars entry that delves into the backstories of some of our favorite characters.

Yes, they did this already with limited success, but the characters in the originals were pretty old, and all focus groups agree that audiences would rather see young attractive people do nothing (or next-to-nothing in the case of pod races) than see older, more developed characters do anything.

Did Emperor Palpatine have braces in high school? Was his stepdad withholding? Star Wars fans will soon know the answers, whether they want to or not.

Every. Year.

If you’re ever upset that two of the most iconic roles in the past 35 years of cinema didn’t carry with them a cartoonish intensity that seems to come from nowhere, take your issues up with Al Pacino.

At a London event, Pacino, speaking to a crowd, let the world know that he passed on some pretty famous leading roles, including Richard Gere’s part in Pretty Woman (he would have snapped the necklace box on Julia’s fingers down so hard her fingers would snap and bleed, prompting Pacino to scream, “Don’t fuck me….EVER AGAIN!”) and those of Han Solo in Star Wars (which ultimately went to Ricardo Montalban), and John McClane in Die Hard (also Montalban, I believe).

But he DID take the role in Jack and Jill where he plays himself, so lest anyone be critical about his career choices early or later on…don’t.

Unless J.J. Abrams is actually 15 different, diligent movie and TV producers, the fears that he’s spreading himself a little thin these days seem to be more and more grounded in reality. Beyond the upcoming Star Trek and Star Wars, he’s got a gaggle of TV shows he’s producing, which may have grown by one over the weekend, as he’s looking at Stephen King’s time-traveling saga 11/22/63 to adapt into a mini-series or TV show.

The premise of a school teacher traveling back to the 1960′s to stop the assassination of JFK seems to be right up Abrams’ alley with both the time traveling and the elements of 1960′s culture.

This announcement should keep Abrams’ attention until next week, when he will get behind a gritty reboot of Mario Bros. or something.

With all the will they/won’t they speculation surrounding Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, and Mark Hamill returning for the Star Wars sequel, we all forgot to needlessly ask aloud whether or not Warwick Davis would be crammed into a costume again. The answer is yes, assuming they ask. After playing Wicket the Ewok in Return of the Jedi and a little kid version of Greedo in Phantom Menace, Davis has expressed his interest in returning to the galaxy far, far away. But he has some terms.

“I love to perform so to be able to go back into something like Star Wars… what a lovely thing that would be to say, that I’ve been in all three trilogies. I’m not dying to get back inside an Ewok suit. I’m happy to play a villain perhaps, [or] a Jedi. A villain with a light saber is the ultimate goal, if that’s not asking too much. I never got a light saber before and I think just to have one of them, to be able to wave one of them around a little bit, would be huge. I’m dropping loads of hints at the moment, so we’ll see what happens.”

If having a miniature Sith Lord doesn’t work out with the next film’s storyline perhaps he can arm himself with a lightsaber in a sequel to Leprechaun In Space or something. The fans would allow it. (IGN)

ENOUGH WITH THE STAR WARS/TREK CROSSOVERS! THESE WORLDS CAN’T COLLIDE ANY FURTHER.

*exhales*

I’m sorry. It’s just that I get so frustrated when people don’t respect the boundaries of these two universes. It’s anarchy. After J.J. Abrams was announced to take on the next Star Wars film, it was just a matter of time before people looked to that film and beyond to fill their need for inane fanboy rumors.

Enter Simon Pegg. The Shaun of the Dead star has crossed over in supporting roles to a couple huge films, both in Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol and the rebooted Star Trek.

The outcry for him to also join is a little on the nose, considering the subject matter and Abrams’ involvement, but maybe we could give toss him a bone and have him play Chewbacca. A short, slacker Chewbacca.

Before we start decrying that the man is too busy…Well, nothing. Let’s just not decry that the man is too busy and assume that he will get us our Star Wars film in a timely fashion because Abrams is rich, and rich people can get things done with remarkable ease.

In any event, during a keynote speech for somesuch thing in Las Vegas yesterday, J.J. told the world that Bad Robot would be teaming up with video game company Valve to see if Half-Life and Portal films were viable. I’m guessing that they will be.

The extent to which Abrams would be personally involved with these project would be anyone’s guess. He is, after all, very, very busy.

Not that it’s any of our business how busy someone is with their career.

When Disney acquired the rights to the Star Wars universe, fans everywhere celebrated by setting off fireworks and singing a rousing rendition of “Yub Nub.” Alas, that celebration may have been premature. It appears the new rulers of the universe, could have far darker plans than George Lucas ever had.

Entertainment Weekly has learned details on two of the spin-off projects: A young Han Solo saga, focusing on the wisecracking smuggler’s origin story, and a bounty hunter adventure with Boba Fett at the center of a rogue’s gallery of galactic scum. Sources close to the projects confirmed this was the direction the development was taking, although they cautioned it’s still very early in the process.
The Han Solo story would take place in the time period between Revenge of the Sith and the first Star Wars (now known as A New Hope), so although it’s possible Harrison Ford could appear as a framing device, the movie would require a new actor for the lead — one presumably much younger than even the 35-year-old Ford when he appeared in the 1977 original.

The Boba Fett film would take place either between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back, or between Empire and Jedi, where the bounty hunter was last seen plunging unceremoniously into a sarlacc pit. Exactly who would play him isn’t much of a complication – in the original trilogy, he never took off his helmet. And in the prequels, we learned he was the son of the original stormtrooper clone, played by Temuera Morrison, who’s still the right age for the part if his services were required.

Somewhere in Hollywood, at this very moment, a screenwriter is hunched over a laptop supplying Ryan Reynolds with glib zingers he’ll use the first time he meets Chewbacca. Excuse me while I walk blindly into traffic.

After last week’s mildly surprising news that fanboy favorite J.J. Abrams will direct the next Star Wars installment, that news has been confirmed by all sorts of camps, including Abrams and George Lucas, who has no right to say anything about what happens to Star Wars, but probably will because, hey, George Lucas.

What’s less certain now is the release date that has been bandied about as sometime in 2015. This would be pretty quick under the best of circumstances, which wouldn’t include Abrams’ press for the new Star Trek, producing Mission Impossible follow-ups, and curating TV shows here and there. So, it’s being reported that while Abrams is on board for the gig, he’s not so sure about the release date.

If Abrams wasn’t a factor, it sounds like hitting a release date two years in the future might not be so rough, seeing as how the film has been in development, and the script is pretty advanced.

J.J. has never let a busy schedule get in the way of production, and let’s hope that continues to be the case as hundreds of millions of fans wait with bated breath.
