RoboCop Joins The Cast Of ‘Star Trek 2′

Though we don’t have any details about the mysterious villain Benicio Del Toro will play in Star Trek 2, we do know he won’t be playing Khan… or RoboCop. That’s because RoboCop has just joined the sequel.

With cameras set to roll, JJ Abrams has cast Peter Weller in an unspecified part. Since this is a JJ Abrams film, there are no details about who or what Weller will play. Will he reprise his Star Trek: Enterprise role of John Frederick Paxton, the racist that almost derailed the formation of the Federation? A hard-as-nails Star Fleet senior official who doesn’t cotton to the antics of Chris Pine‘s Kirk? Or maybe the spirit of a long-dead God that roams the galaxy in a vague, on-going mystery that makes us all ponder creation. Or maybe, JUST MAYBE, he’ll be a severely wounded ensign they are able to bring back with cybernetic implants. That last option should be old hat for him. (Variety)

Benicio Del Toro Offered The Chance To Grumble Through ‘Star Trek 2′

Famous actor/mumbler Benicio Del Toro has been offered a role in Star Trek 2, the sequel to J.J. Abrams‘ surprise hit Star Trek reboot. What the role actually is is somewhat mysterious, other than the fact that it’s for a bad guy. The only Star Trek I’ve ever seen is Star Trek IV, so I’m guessing this means he’s going to be a Republican. Those Republicans are scary guys – I like their weird foreheads.

Anyway, it’s not set in stone yet, but Del Toro has reportedly “met with Abrams but, in an effort to keep the role a secret, still doesn’t know exactly what it is.” Man, so this Abrams guy is like that with people he knows in real life too. Must be annoying. (Variety)

JJ Abrams Is Closer To Almost Deciding To Direct ‘Star Trek 2′

JJ Abrams is back from vacation and beginning prep on Star Trek 2. He’s currently working with writers Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof on the script that will re-team him with the Enterprise crew.

Shooting is slated to begin in January which means there’s no way the film will be ready in time for the June 29th, 2012 release date that Paramount had scheduled for it. You just can’t rush a movie like this. But you CAN rush GI Joe 2: Retaliation, which will take Trek’s June spot. It’s now believed that Star Trek 2 will hit theaters in late 2012 or the summer of 2013. That’s ample time to work on your Klingon costume for opening night. (Deadline)

‘Star Trek 2′ Probably Going To Be A Little Late, Says J.J. Abrams

If you’ve been looking forward to Star Trek 2‘s planned release date of June 29, 2012, I’ve got some bad news for you: With director J.J. Abrams not even officially signed on for the project, it doesn’t look like that’s a very plausible goal. And that’s not just empty speculation – it comes from Abrams himself in a recent interview:

“I care much more about it being good than it be ready…we’re doing everything we can to make sure schedules don’t get screwed up. I don’t think anyone wants a movie on time that’s not worth your time.”

What’s that? Withholding a movie from theaters in order to make sure it meets an artistic standard? What an outmoded business model! And that’s not the only antiquated method Abrams is planning on using: It’s rumored that the movie might not even be in 3D! Abrams again:

“I have nothing against 3-D in theory. But I’ve also never run to the movies because something’s in 3-D. [As for ‘Trek’], as soon as I read the script, if it says, ‘Somebody pushes at weapon toward the camera in a menacing way,’ and we think, ‘That’d be better in 3-D!’… I dunno.”

Yeah right, like anyone would pay to see a weapon pushed toward the camera in 2-D. Get with it, Abrams. (The Playlist)
