Try this at home.

At the end of a long month, there’s very little better than kicking back and indulging in a long article about movie gadgets. Good news! It’s happening RIGHT NOW. We’ve scoured some of the most iconic action films (and one drama with a crazy-ass gadget…see if you can spot it) and from them harvested some of the most bad-ass weaponized contraptions of all time. Sure, the gadgets listed aren’t always designed for destruction, but we feel that it’s always a device’s highest and best use. Enjoy.

Peter Parker’s Web Slingers – The Amazing Spider-Man

In the latest edition of Spider-Man, coming out on Blu-ray™ and DVD November 9, Parker takes the easy way out and builds mechanical web slingers, rather than develop them genetically, like a TRUE superhero. Just kidding. I actually find the mechanical web slingers much more impressive than the evolved ones, if only because this Peter Parker had to work to develop them, rather than just let it happen to him like another Spider-Man portrayer. Let’s just call him “Toby M.” for the sake of anonymity.

Batterang – The Batman Movies and TV Show

What’s remarkable about this homemade gadget is that it simply defies explanation. It explodes, it sometimes returns, sometimes it’s remote controlled, and it can travel incredible distances at ridiculous speeds. Why? Because Batman. That’s why.

The Tim Burton and Chris Nolan installments have done their best to distance themselves from the campy TV show, but no one can resist the subdued charm of the batterang. Not sure if I should capitalize “batterang…”

Ash’s Chainsaw Hand – Evil Dead 2

While it might not be the most ingenious weapon, it is the most hard-core and bad ass. In the series, Ash (played by Bruce Campbell) undergoes a series of unfortunate catastrophes that cause his hand to be possessed, then cause him to cut it off, replacing it with a chainsaw. It’s not exactly rocket science, but, coming from a guy that calls a shotgun his “boom stick,” it’s to be expected.

The Bolt Shooter – The Good Son

Sometimes bad people make great weapons, and nowhere is that more apparent than in The Good Son, a film that stars Macauley Culkin as the bad guy (boy). And oh, is he ever bad. He does lots of terrible things, like causing wrecks on the freeways by throwing dummies off of bridges, but the most heartless thing he can muster up is taking out a ferocious dog with a weird bolt-gun-crossbow hybrid. He’s a horrible, horrible boy, but his fabrication abilities are off the charts.

Charlie Kelly’s Rat-Bashing Stick – It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia

(I am aware this isn’t his actual rat stick, but I figured an action sequence was more profound than gadget accuracy.)
When you kill as many rats as Charlie does, you get that thousand-yard stare in your eyes that comes hand-in-hand with the crushing pain of recognizing your own mortality. Fortunately for Charlie, killing rat families just got a whole lot easier with his rat-bashing stick, a modified baseball bat that features a whole slew of pointy nails and a chain or something. It’s probably the crudest device on this list, but when you see how it warms Charlie’s heart, it might also be the most endearing!

Data’s Telescoping Boxing Glove – The Goonies

I’ll be honest. This is the first device that came to mind, but I’m having a really hard time coming to terms with the efficacy of it. First of all, if you’re going to punch someone to cause them harm, using a padded glove to do it sort of defeats the purpose and mitigates the damage done. Sort of cartoon-y for a film that otherwise offers a sincere and real look at a, um, group of kids that are hunting for treasure and who accidentally stumble upon a pirate armada.

Ok. So the boxing glove is probably in keeping with the premise of the movie.

The Proton Pack – Ghostbusters

Please don’t tell me how a Proton Pack works. Not interested. All I know is that they suck ghosts into a backpack, where they are held until it’s time to more or less incinerate them in a big ghost oven. Or something like that. You know how I know these Proton Packs are homemade? Well, for one, they look like crap. And two, they’re not foolproof. In fact, they’re downright dangerous.

Never ever cross the streams of two Proton Packs. You won’t like the result.

Screw it, I'm doing it anyway.

HOW CRAZY IS THIS?

It’s like both Canadian rock stars became instantly and completely self-aware and said, “Screw it. Let’s really see how far we can take this.” I mean, what are the odds of two Canadians falling in love with each other? One in a million? One in a billion? There’s a 100% chance that their babies will be Canadian! 100!

Let’s talk about Avril’s choice in men up to this point. She married (not “dated,” “married”) Deryck Whibley, the lead singer of Sum 41. Strike one. She dated Brody Jenner. Strike two. It’s as if she didn’t read any of the articles written about her bad choices when she decided that it would be a good idea to complete the trifecta with Chad Kroeger, a guy that would probably be a jetski salesman if he wasn’t the lead singer of Nickelback.

I would chastise Kroeger more for his decision to marry Avril Lavigne, but of course he’s going to marry Avril Lavigne. If you were asked two years ago who you thought Chad Kroeger would eventually settle down with, you would have said, “I dunno. Some Playmate, or maybe like Avril Lavigne or something.”

And you would have been right. He’s gonna marry Avril Lavigne or something.

What’s perhaps more pressing than their nuptials is the fact that they recorded a song together. That’s how they met. It will be #1 in Canada for 32 straight weeks, destroying the record previously held by both Barenaked Ladies and Rush, but will not crack the top 100 anywhere else in the world.

Oh, and Nickelback did the song “Hero” for the Spider-Man soundtrack, so there’s your movie relevancy.

Farmers Insurance has a new ad featuring J.K. Simmons and his usual TV crew dressed up as characters from The Avengers. What does Farmers Insurance have to do with the The Avengers? I’m not 100% sure, and watching the ad didn’t help, but there was a cool explosion. Plus, it’s good to see Simmons, a veteran of the original Spider-Man films, keeping it in the Marvel family. DC is for losers.

Marc Webb seems to have found a balance of style and substance that many films, especially comic book adaptations, struggle to find.

Today, a worldwide event took place for The Amazing Spider-Man. At cities around the globe, the trailer for the film was previewed to chosen fans and media, while bigger markets also got a Spidey-related celebrity in attendance of the screening, as well.

While NYC got Spider-Man himself in Andrew Garfield, we in Los Angeles ran a close second, scoring director Marc Webb, who introduced both the 3D trailer, and a five-minute, 2D “sizzle reel” that told the story of THIS Spider-Man using clips from the film.

While it would seem that the story of Spider-Man is old hat given that we’ve experienced three films in the past decade or so, Webb took pains to clarify that the film wasn’t interested in rehashing material covered by the Raimi/Maguire films. A new Spider-Man (Garfield) has a new love interest in Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone, who was beamed in via satellite from her screening in Rio de Janeiro), and he’s got a new set of problems in villain Dr. Connors, (Rhys Ifans).

What Webb stressed (and both the trailer and sizzle reel hinted at) was that this film tells us the story of what happened to Peter Parker’s parents, which is told through his relationship with his Aunt and Uncle, as well as his struggle with Dr. Connors, who was his father’s partner in science.

Other than that, the film focuses largely on a hipper-than-Tobey teenager who has a crush on Stone’s Stacy. Stacy’s father (Denis Leary) just happens to be the policeman tasked with hunting down Spider-Man, so the scenes between the two are filled with an honest tension that didn’t exist so much in the earlier films.

And that’s the story as told by the trailer. The real reveal here (the fate of Parker’s parents) is alluded to, but not demonstrated, though Webb touted that as a selling point of the film. Beyond that, Webb’s sensibilities coming from (500) Days of Summer make this film seem almost like an indie love story in much the same fashion that Christopher Nolan was able to make The Dark Knight feel like a crime film.

In short, the trailer suggested this film has enough heart and character development to appeal to those outside the fanboy set.

Story aside, how does the movie look?

It looks great. Webb stressed the use of 3D cameras in filming, not the “bullshit” conversion technique. Much has been made of the use of 3D as Spider-Man wings through New York, and the footage lives up to the hype. The action feels made for IMAX.

A big element of the trailer was a bombastic, epic score that made even these three minutes feel important. I felt that the original three films never hoped to be more than “cute,” and while this one appears very heartfelt (an awkward interaction early on between Peter and Stacy shows a soul that eludes most superhero films), it also feels like this is a story that’s asking to be told, rather than one that’s created.

While Columbia certainly wants to put its best foot forward with the trailer, including all the “money shots” that make the 3D seem worthwhile, it’s the more low-key moments that left me wanting more. In the theater lobby after the viewing, Sony execs were loudly celebrating a tweet from the audience that read something along the lines of “(Christopher) Nolan has found a rival in Webb.” While I don’t expect a rivalry or feud to break out any time soon, and I don’t think that Webb has the same resume that Nolan does yet, I understand the Tweeter’s excitement in seeing a filmmaker hit the mark in such a huge fashion.

Enough with the words. See for yourself at Screen Junkies tonight at midnight PST when this trailer goes live online.

Iron Fist harnessing his chi

First up is the enigmatic “Iron Fist”. Although a feature film was supposed to be in the works, it seems to have become lost in development hell since nothing concrete has ever materialized. A pity because Iron Fist is definitely one of the more interesting characters in comic books. A formidable martial-arts fighter, Iron Fist trained under the venerable master, Lei Kung. Through his training he learned deadly fighting techniques and developed the ability to focus his chi to augment his already impressive physical attributes. As a result, Iron Fist has enhanced strength, speed, reflexes, agility and durability. At one point, he even battled the powerfu Iron Man to a near standstill. How’s that for cinema worthy?

Captain Marvel

Captain Marvel shooting fire blasts

Not to be mistaken for Shazam, the DC Comics character with the lightning bolt motif on his chest and a host of powers similar to Superman‘s (though their super suits are so similar you’d be hard-pressed to distinguish the two), Captain Marvel is Marvel Comics‘ version of, well, Superman. But Captain Marvel is his own man—a superhero secretly sent by an alien race to spy on humanity, while living with the people of Earth, he fought alongside this planet’s heroes defending the populace from evildoers. Slowly, Captain Marvel began to understand us and empathize with us. When his superiors learn about his apparent betrayal, he is branded a traitor for his transgressions. Captain Marvel has the ability to fly and fire energy blasts. He’ll also kick anyone’s ass in a fight.

Winter Soldier

Marvel Comics' Winter Soldier

Comic aficionados know that Captain America once had a dependable sidekick. The young James “Bucky” Barnes bravely fought and stood by Captain America against the Nazis during World War II. Unfortunately, he suffered a terrible plane accident and was thought lost over the raging seas. Miraculously, his cold-preserved but badly battered body was then found by the Russians who saved him from certain doom. Unfortunately though, the hero was also brainwashed. He then was given cyborg appendages and became an elite assassin for the Soviets. Sounds like an intriguing Manchurian Candidate-esque concept ripe for a 3D viewing to us.

Machine Man

Machine Man

This obscure character started off his existence as a robot but was eventually granted the gift of sentience. An unlikely hero, he often wonders what it would be like to be human. He initially had a hokey, mechanized look but eventually made himself look more like a real person. Machine Man has a variety of weapons and has telescopic arms and legs which he uses for a variety of attacks. He also has superhuman strength as well as enhanced stamina and speed. Neo Terminator, anyone?

Zombie Spider-Man

Zombie Spider-Man attacking a fellow ghoul

The Marvel Zombie Universe is an alternate Marvel reality where most of the world’s super-powered individuals and regular folk have been devoured or turned into flesh-eating zombies. Unfortunately for us, the great Spider-Man has been zombified and teams up with most of the former heroes who have also been turned into to a rampaging horde of ravenous creatures. With their powers and abilities still intact, thi unstoppable army of the undead have the upper hand and systematically pick off the planet’s remaining survivors. The Marvel Zombie Universe effectively combines super-heroics with the time-tested zombie genre for some slam-bang action and intense terror. While the Spider-Man movies were great, a Zombie Spider-Man would indubitably be even better.

Probably more entertaining than 'Spider-man 3'.

Lately, there’s been a lot of talk about the Broadway premiere of Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark as well as the upcomin Spider-Man reboot, The Amazing Spider-Man. We’re not big into non-South Park related musicals, and the reboot doesn’t come out until 2012. But rather than sit around “slinging webs” while I wait, I’ve compiled 20 of the best pictures from the Spider-Man Meme, which grew out of still taken from the 1960’s Spider-Man cartoon. All and all, I think this meme is a vast improvement over the original series, and to be honest, it’s probably more entertaining than Spider-Man 3. Enjoy.

The ones showcased at E3 this year try hard to change the tide.

Please don’t do the math, but many moons ago, I played the E.T. video game. I’m still angry about it. Heck, my dad is still angry about it and he doesn’t even play video games anymore. Games based on films have mostly been, to put it nicely, suck fests. It’s so bad that when I mention that I’m covering a film-to-game adaptation, people say things like, “All movie games are crap.” Or, “I’ll pay my rent this month instead. If I’m going to annoy my landlord, it’s going to be for Call of Duty or Halo. At least I can distract him by offering to let him play.”

I just spent three very long and brightly lit days at E3 (and a few days before that doing previews) and saw some of the latest crop of tie-ins. (Check out all of Game Front’s coverage HERE) Some were successful, some not so much. Part of the reason is what they’re basing it on. Let’s be honest…it’s really hard to milk 40+ hours of content off of a two hour story. Very often, the mistake is basing the game off the film alone. It’s what appears to be the case with the upcoming Captain America: Super Soldier. Now, I played this on two different platforms at E3, and I only played the demo they had available. I’m not saying the full game is going to be boring. I’m just saying that it appears to be a single story, set exactly when the film is set and looks to me like a generic game setting/style with characters from the film shoved in. The game play was pretty meh as well, but that is a failing any game can have. It’s also an article for another day. From what I saw, there was just nothing different about it.

Studios often think of a video game tie-in like a Happy Meal accessory. The marketing department wants this game to come out with the film and there isn’t time to make it happen with any sort of quality. This is not always the case, of course, but let’s be honest here. When was the last time you saw a film and said, “Ooh, I bet the game is going to be super duper cool, just like the movie! Let’s stop and pick it up on the way home.” Consumers are pretty savvy and we know how this all works. Tie-ins are a quick way to make a buck with recognizable characters. (Another article for another day? Why films based on games also suck. Anyone care to weigh in below? Anyone else excited/terrified about the upcoming Warcraft?)

That said, there were a few titles that stood out in the film-to-game arena. My vote on why? They didn’t stick to the script of one film. They expanded the universe or used the long history of the genre to create a playable story. A long form story. One in particular was <a href="http://www.gamefront.com/spider-man-edge-of-time-preview” target=”_blank”>Spider-Man: Edge of Time. In this game, we have Amazing Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2099 in a new story line. As far as I know, this has nothing to do with the film. A rift in time is opened by a scientist who sends Anti-Venom to heal Amazing. And healing our web-slinging friend leads to his death. The scientist has gone back in time to start his company early, creating a new, alternate time line. 2099 and Amazing have to work together to change things back to the way they were. We just saw a preview, but aren’t you already intrigued? Yes, I know Spider-Man games come out regularly, but not making this a direct story tie-in means that they’ll get mileage out of the name, get people excited to see what Spidey is doing in the upcoming film incarnation (despite it being way to early for a reboot) and have a game that doesn’t bore the spit out of me.

Same thing goes for the upcoming X-Men: Destiny. X-Men: First Class is out in theaters, and in my opinion is pretty darn fantastic. Well, except for January Jones acting like a piece of very attractive cardboard. It would have been very easy to do the latest game as a film extension. You play as a young Magneto…you fight Kevin Bacon and all the baddies in swingin’ sixties garb. The final boss? Professor X, of course. Or your own demons. You know what I mean. No, in X-Men: Destiny, we’re back in the present. Well, the future, actually. There are three brand new mutants who have to constantly decide what side they’re on, while they take on x-genes from mutants throughout the game. A scientist (again with the evil scientists) has isolated these genes, which are unique to the mutant they came from, and using them to upgrade his abilities. So here, you’re getting that battle from the film, but outside that specific story.

And then there is the holy grail of movie games, Arkham City. If you played Arkham Asylum, you know how amazing the gameplay is. But again, it’s a story outside the film…at least I assume it is. It has Catwoman as a playable character! I watched her kill someone with her thighs! (Sweet dreams tonight boys!) As we all know, Selena Kyle is in the upcoming film, The Dark Knight Rises. But this story works all on its own. Hugo Strange has stolen the cherished possessions of the denizens of Gotham away in a vault. In the level we were shown, Catwoman needs Poison Ivy’s help to get in the sewers and steals back Ivy’s precious orchid in exchange. Now, she crushes it beneath her high-heeled boots, but hey, that’s what you get for trusting a crazy cat lady. Again, this is a story that involves the greater universe, not just a two hour story stretched out far past its limits.

Now I know we’re dealing with comic book universes as well as film stories here. Those aren’t the only ones that look promising. We got a preview of Aliens: Colonial Marines as well, which didn’t rely on a film script. Now we didn’t see much here, but you start off on a ship that crashes into Hadley’s Hope. It takes place immediately after the events on LV-426…I don’t want to spoil anything here, but let’s just say that I’m going to be having nightmares about fighting off “the crusher.” The action was intense! This is being touted as a true sequel to the film Aliens. See? Beyond the film! I’m not reliving something I just watched. I’m living and gunning down xenomorphs in an expanded universe.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on this. Do you like to replay the film or do you want to go beyond the script? Do you agree that sticking too close is part of the reason film games often fail? Feel free to expand into complaints/compliments about gameplay. I’ll be reading every single comment. And…I know this is opening a can of worms…tell everyone your vote for the worst film-to-game adaption out there. Okay, fine. You can vote for the best too.

Say hello to 'The Amazing Spider-Man.'

It’s official: The Spider-Man reboot that has the world waiting with baited breath to see if it’s possible to make Spider-Man appealing to modern audiences has a title: The Amazing Spider-Man. It also has a release date: July 3, 2012 (provided the world hasn’t ended by then). For you non-virgins out there, The Amazing Spider-Man is the name Spider-Man’s first comic series, so this choice of title shows they aren’t planning on straying TOO far from the established Spider-Man mythology. They could have gone in a quirkier direction and called it Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, but I guess we can wait until the next reboot in 2020 for that. There’s also a new image, the large version of which you can see below. (via ComingSoon.net)

If you’ve been a little skeptical about the idea of a Spider-Man reboot, you’re not alone. But these brand new set photos might ease your mind a little, since a couple of them have Spider-Man thrusting his spider-crotch into the face of some guy. That’s cool right? Steve Ditko would definitely approve.
Here are some new pictures of Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man, illicitly snapped as filming takes place in downtown LA.

The paparazzi situation in Los Angeles really has gotten out of hand. Here’s a guy just trying to mind his own business, swinging from a web in downtown Los Angeles, and he keeps getting hassled by photographers. A little privacy, please? Let this man, this Spider-Man, live his life.

Here are some new pictures of Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man, illicitly snapped as filming takes place in downtown LA. Instead of just running through traffic, Spidey is swinging off of trucks and living a more heroic existence than the last time we checked in on him. Granted, the ladders and safety equipment take us out of the fantasy, but I’m sure they’ll punch those out in post. Whatever that means.
When it rains (production stills), it pours (production stills). Today it pours.

When it rains (production stills), it pours (production stills). Today it pours, with single images from Judge Dredd, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, and a seemingly unofficial photo from the set of Spider-Man. What can we glean from these stills?

The new Judge Dredd kind of looks like a housefly, and the post-apocalyptic motorcycle looks like something a shop class would have made in 1981. Let’s hope that the upcoming trailer will give us some dimensions that the stills have failed to. (/Film)

The new ‘Pirates‘ appears to be trying to sell audiences on the 3-D experience they will provide with this image. Given that the franchise has gotten a little stale over the past decade or so, playing up the 3-D angle will probably do more for buzz than any aspect of the story good. With Disney behind it, this could be a fun one. (Cinema Blend)

Here, we can see that Spider-Man either broke his arm or Andrew Garfield has truly awful running form. We’ve seen this costume before, and it looks a lot more interesting up close than it does from this distance. Further, this is the second time we’ve seen Spider-Man jaywalking. I don’t to get all preachy, but someone should tell Sony Studios that impressionable kids will be watching this. (Coming Soon)

We've got new photos for both the new Marc Webb Spider-Man and X-Men: First Class. So DC comics can officially eat it today.

We’ve got new photos for both the new Marc Web Spider-Man and X-Men: First Class. So DC comics can officially eat it today. The Spider-Man shot isn’t an official still. As a matter of fact, it’s hard to tell what it really is. It’s blurry, it’s got a Spider-Man-shaped person running through traffic in downtown LA (filmed to be NYC, of course), and that’s pretty much it. I guess this proves that they are actually filming the movie. Of course, no one doubted that they were filming, but still, it’s nice to be sure. No word on whether the pictured Spidey is Andrew Garfield or a stuntman. One thing’s for certain. It’s not Tobey Maguire. (/Film)

In seemingly more “official” news, we’ve got a somewhat obscured photo of the cast of X-Men: First Class in their costumes. It would appear that Professor X is standing. He could be in a very tall, backless wheelchair, but that’s pretty unlikely. Beyond that, it’s hard to know what to make of their outfits, except for January Jones as Emma Frost. She is looking pretty sharp. (Playlist)

NOTE: MSN has pulled the pic for unspecified reasons, and some rumors are circulating that it’s fake, while others are saying it’s simply “unauthorized.” We will leave this post up until we get some definitive proof, if only because James McAvoy and January Jones are so damn attractive.

Now that we've all gotten used to the idea of Peter Parker being able to organically spin webbing from his wrists, those bastards at Sony are pulling the rug out from under us once again, bringing back Spider-Man's famous web-shooters.

Now that we’ve all gotten used to the idea of Peter Parker being able to organically spin webbing from his wrists, those bastards at Sony are pulling the rug out from under us once again, bringing back Spider-Man‘s famous web-shooters for the Spider-Man reboot according to Emma Stone at the Golden Globes. If you’re enough of a square to only know the character through the 2002 movie, you might not know that originally, Spider-Man used mechanical devices on his wrists to spin webs, not doing it organically as in the Raimi version. What this means is that in addition to being more true to the original comics, we can get some sweet drama involving Spider-Man running out of web fluid and having to run to CVS to get more.

Stone didn’t elaborate further – in fact, all she says in the video is that the silver discs in the recently released photo of Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man are “a device.” So maybe it’s actually a wrist-mounted lasergun and the movie’s going to be called Spider-Man, Cowboys and Aliens. I’d watch that.

The first images of Andrew Garfield in the new Spider-Man suit raced across the Internet yesterday afternoon and dominated the news cycle. Now, reactions are beginning to trickle in. Vulture caught up with the Internet’s preferred Peter Parker, Donald Glover, to ask his thoughts on the first look.

During a “Community” panel at the TCA, Glover had this to say:

“It’s kinda dope. You know what the coolest part of it is? He has a backpack, which I think is sick. The part of Spider-Man I always loved [is]: He’s young, and he’s dealing with everybody hating him and he’s got all this weight on his shoulders. [The backpack] reminds you of how young he is.”

Not only that, but if it’s a Jansport backpack it comes with a lifetime guarantee on it. So you can have that sweet baby replaced no matter what the Lizard does to it.

On the stage of Broadway’s Spider-Man musical, actors are getting injured left and right. Everyone thought this was a sure sign that the multi-million dollar Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark was gonna be one of the greatest musical flops of all-time. So what happened? It became the highest-grossing show on Broadway. The theater audience has voted, and they want blood.

That’s why I think director David Fincher and NIN frontman Trent Reznor are onto something with their idea for turning Fight Club into a musical. After many years of joking about it to the press, then half-joking about it to the press, we understand that they’re now actively working on adapting the film for the stage. The timing is perfect. Yes, imagining Tyler Durden and crew prance-fighting like the Jets and the Sharks is ridiculous, but that’s obviously not what it would be like. If they allow the actors to really beat each other up on stage, every single night, they can easily beat Spider-Man. In Spider-Man, the injuries are accidents – if crazy injuries were real and guaranteed, you could sell tickets for $200 a pop. A few actors might die, but they’ll die doing what they love: getting punched in the teeth.

Broadway, watch your back. (/Film)

Also: Calvin, watch your back, too.

Thomas Howell joined Andrew Garfield and company in Marc Webb‘s Spider-Man. It isn’t precisely known the nature of his role, other than the character’s first name, “Ray.” A quick Wikipedia search tells me that other than the father of Peter Parker’s current comics girlfriend (who won’t be his girlfriend in the movie), there aren’t many important characters in the comic book world of Spider-Man with that particular name (I am NOT a nerd!), so it’s probably safe to assume that this is a character created just for the movie version. Since Spider-Man is largely about teenagers, it’s also safe to assume that C. Thomas Howell will be playing a character’s father or uncle or something – we’ll keep our eyes peeled for announcements regarding the casting of any characters named “Ray, Jr.” (ScreenRant)

Th Spider-Man reboot will go where no other Spider-Man film has gone before, giving the audience a glimpse of Spidey’s life before his parents were killed. At least that’s what Hollywood Insider is reporting. What would they have to gain by lying?

In most Spider-Man origin stories, Peter’s parents are killed while he is very young, leaving his Aunt May and Uncle Ben to raise him. While the reboot is following a similar plot, it will reportedly alter the time-line, bumping Peter’s age up to between 6 and 9 at the time of his parents’ death. I’m not sure what this will accomplish other than to launch the career of another promising child actor, the likes of which we haven’t seen since Jake Lloyd. He's honored to even be considered.
Sony has offered the villain role in the Spider-man reboot to Rhys Ifans. You may remember him as the slovenly roommate in Notting Hill, or a lot more things if you're British. No word yet on exactly which villain he'll be playing though. I'm getting a Green Goblin vibe from him, but I suppose he could also be Venom with the right black unitard. If Ifans does in fact play Green Goblin he already has experience creating his own aviation contraptions.

Spidey doesn't stand a chance. (Deadline)

Sony Pictures will offer Easy A star Emma Stone the role of Mary Jane Watson in the Spider-man Reboot, Deadline is reporting. I imagine the actress will say yes, unless she hates the feel and smell of money. If this news is true, thank God they've knocked out one more casting decision.
Next one up is the role of Gwen Stacy, Spidey's first love. The actresses currently in contention are Dianna Agron, Mia Wasikowska, Georgina Haig, and Dominique McElligott. My personal chose would be Agron, as her name is the easiest to spell and I'm sure I'll be writing about Spider-man upwards of fifty thousand times over the next few years. Alright, she's also got a smile that could melt cold hearts. I hope you're happy. Now I'm emoting.

There's a rumor going around Tinz Town that Christoph Waltz may encourage Mary Jane Watson to wait for the cream. The Inglourious Basterds bad man is said to be in Sony's sights to play the villian in the upcoming Spider-Man 3D reboot. Note that they are only interested. Waltz hasn't indicated that he's interested. However, he did agree to star in Paul W. S. Anderson's Three Musketeers, so it's not like he's picky.
Whether Waltz is sought for the role of the Lizard or Green Goblin is unclear as of right now. Perhaps he's a method actor and got lost in his Basterds' Jew Hunter role. Y'know, you see the name "Spiderman" on paper and you just kinda assume. (The Playlist)

Yesterday, fairly unknown British actor Andrew Garfield was awarded the coveted role of Peter Parker in the Spider-Man reboot. You can "Extra! Extra!
