Lucy Lawless Tries To Deny The World Its Sweet, Sweet Oil, Gets Arrested

Good news today: Lucy Lawless, of Xena: Warrior Princess and Spartacus fame, has been arrested as her plot to deny the world the oil it deserves was foiled by New Zealand police. Lawless and six other Greenpeace protestors climbed atop the Noble Discoverer, a drilling ship serving Shell Oil.

She had been atop the rig for 77 hours, but was arrested as police came to the aid of the ship to take away the trespassers.

Upon her arrest, Lawless Tweeted, “Loud music over speakers about 1.30 AM. They starting to go Guantanamo on our ass?”

Yes, yes. I’m sure that Lawless’ plight of spending a weekend occupying a tanker ship in new Zealand is very similar to the people in Guantanamo Bay, some of whom have been unjustly held and tortured. I don’t know why Xena can’t just accept the fact that without that awesome oil she’s shanghaiing, we’d all have to ride the bus like poor people.

I think the survivors would envy the dead.

Graham King is developing Spartacus as a feature film, focusing on the rebel leader who took on the Roman Empire and less on seeing Lucy Lawless‘s boobies. The project is based on a pitch from who else but 300 writer Michael B. Gordon.

Based on the novel by Howard Fast, the movie will deal with the historical facts rather than the totally bullshit Spartacus that appeared in Stanley Kubrick‘s 1960 film and the Starz show about boning and CGI blood. This picture is said to focus on Spartacus leading a rebellion of 70,000 gladiators and 50,000 slaves against the Army of Rome. He didn’t really win but this material likely loans itself to slow-motion battle cries and some really good speeches. Go picture! (Variety)

Bad news for Starz‘s 13 subscribers. Looks like the network won’t have “Spartacus” actress Lesley-Ann Brandt to boobs around any boobs.

Brandt has appeared as Lucy Lawless‘s sex slave Naevia on both the nudity-heavy “Spartacus” and its predecessor “Spartacus: Gods of the Arena.” Presumably tired of catching a draft on a green screen set, she has decided to not re-up her contract and head to the better-clothed safety of “CSI:NY.” Though she’ll only appear in a recurring role, she’s also pursuing broadcast pilots.

Liam McIntryre To World: “I Am Spartacus.”

Liam McIntyre has some big shoes to fill after season one’s Spartacus, Andy Whitfield, had to be relieved following cancer complications. The Wrap states McIntryre won the role out of a shortlist of three, all of whom auditioned in November. His TV pedigree includes roles on The Pacific and Australian programs Neighbours and Rush.

While he has the acting chops, producers didn’t find his skinny frame very gladiator-ish, so he was asked to bulk up a bit. I hope that request didn’t hurt his feelings. The fact that McIntyre is Australian shouldn’t be a distraction to anyone who actually thinks that Spartacus looked like Kirk Douglas and not more like Vin Diesel.

Spartacus, despite being in pay-cable limbo over at Starz, amassed some pretty respectable ratings its freshman season, so the casting decision was a bigger decision than many realize. No premiere date for season two of Spartacus: Blood and Sand has been set yet, but production is set to begin in early spring with McIntyre stepping in as the legendary slave.

‘FUNNY PEOPLE’ TO GO ‘TROPIC THUNDER’ WITH FAKE MOVIES INSIDE MOVIE

In an interview with MTV, Judd Apatow spills the beans that his upcoming film Funny People will include scenes and "marketing materials" for a bunch of fake movies in which Adam Sandler’s character George Simmons stars.

It’s a conceit that worked really well in Tropic Thunder, with the inspired trailers for such high concept spoofs as Scorcher, The Fatties: Fart 2 and Satan’s Alley (all three of which you can see after the jump, along with a short list of faux-films within the world of Funny People.

Films within Funny People, all starring George Simmons (Sandler):

Mistake: a romantic comedy co-starring Elizabeth Banks

My Best Friend is a Robot: a buddy comedy co-starring Owen Wilson, which you can look for as a poster in Sandler’s character’s house.

Redux: Judd Apatow calls this as a cross between Little Man and 17 Again, as Sandler becomes a six-month-old baby in it.

Mer-man: A male version of Splash with Sandler’s character filling Darryl Hannah‘s fins

Cinematical had a great theory that some of these fake films would become part of Funny People’s marketing campaig knowing Apatow, and if those

billboards from I Love You, Man are any indication, we’re in for a treat.
