It seems that Chris Rock isn’t the only one. The recent hack of employee emails at Sony Entertainment Pictures has been pretty revealing. Digital copies of four upcoming films were compromised and paydays were exposed, but most interesting perhaps is the fact that people at Sony are really tired of making Adam Sandler movies. Hey! Those fart jokes feed your children!! From the leaked emails:

Be more focussed and ruthless in directing our resources to businesses that will sustain the long term health of SPE – networks, broadcast TV shows, new movie franchises, digital distibution By the same token, stop or reduce support for areas that have no more value (Sandler movies, DVD)

There is a general “blah-ness” to the films we produce. Althought we manage to produce an innovative film once in awhile, Social Network, Moneyball, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, we continue to be saddled with the mundane, formulaic Adam Sandler films. Let’s raise the bar a little on the films we produce, and inspire employees that they are working on the next Social Network. That said, there’s a strange dichotomy of encouraging us to be fiscally responsible, but then upper management allows certain talent and filmmakers to bleed us dry with their outlandish requests for private jets, wardrobe and grooming stylists – and are surprised when they are asked to work more than 5 hours to promote their film.

In TV and Theatrical, I hope management looks closely at the money spent on development and term deals to ensure efficiency. There are a lot of term deal personnel as well as creative personnel, yet we only release a dozen or so Columbia Pictures a year, for example. And will we still be paying for Adam Sandler? Why?

It is commenable that SPE understands/supports the importance of risk-taking, particularly in how the we pick films to greenlight. However, the studio needs to change deal structure that has been in place with Happy Madison, as this arrangement has disproportionately benefitted Adam Sandler and his team, relative to SPE.

Perhaps it’s a generational thing, but I’ve been disappointed with the content of some of the films we’ve been producing lately. I don’t think people who know me would consider me a prude, but the boorish, least common demomonator slate strikes me as a waste of resource and reputation.

Without defending his work, I’ll say that this Sandler hate is unwarranted. I’d argue that the continued botching of Spider-Man is what’s really setting Sony back. Adam Sandler movies always enjoy a baffling success at the box office, and there’s no way you can tell me he’s spending too much money on grooming and stylists. He regularly wears Hawaiian jams with Bruins jerseys and looks like he spent the night in a cement mixer. (Gawker)

Just a week after Aaron Sorkin declared that he is done working in television, he may find himself having to return to television. We’ve seen David Fincher, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Christian Bale all leave his untitled Steve Jobs biopic for varying reasons, but now the studio itself has dropped out. Which really could prove to be an impediment.

In the wake of not being able to find an interested leading man, Sony has put the Sorkin joint in turnaround which means they don’t plan to make it any time soon if at all. There are rumors that Universal is interested in picking it up, but until that’s confirmed we should get used to knowing that the world may only get the two Steve Jobs biopics that currently exist. In an attempt to show just how deeply out of touch they can be, Sony is developing a franchise based in the world of Robin Hood that will follow The Avengers team-up film model that really only works for The Avengers. Hood, will be the kick-off in a series of films set in the same cinematic universe that feature Robin Hood, Little John, Friar Tuck and Will Scarlett. But will it mix in elements of Mission: Impossible and the Fast & Furious films? Yes.

It is reported that Sony has pushed seven-figures toward producer Michael De Luca after hearing this pitch. Just imagine their embarrassment when they realize that Robin Hood pre-dates cars and technology. (THR)

Finally, an action film brave enough to have its protagonist sneak around disguised as a cardboard box. Deadline reports that Sony is moving forward with the long-awaited adaptation of their best-selling game Metal Gear Solid. The Kings of Summer director Jordan Vogt-Roberts is in early talks to bring Solid Snake to the big screen.

Although the Metal Gear Solid series are very cinematic games, how well will they translate to the screen? I’m mainly referring to the cardboard boxes. They can’t NOT include this staple of the games. Perhaps these enemy bases are accustomed to receiving large FreshDirect orders.

Total Film got their hands on an image from The Amazing Spider-Man 2 that they’re acknowledging could a SPOILER. It gives us the first good look at Dane DeHaan as the Green Goblin in Sony’s sequel. Though I don’t see how this is considered a spoiler as they’ll likely use the Green Goblin in future marketing and on Burger King cups but hey, if you want to see the film through fresh eyes do not read further.

At first blush, not bad. Spidey and Green Goblin throwing down inside the world’s largest clock but if you look closer, something is wrong.

Though anything is a step up from Willem Dafoe‘s Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers costume worn in Sam Raimi’s original Spider-Man, I can’t say I’m geeking out over this new take on the Green Goblin. I’m just going to come out and say it. It looks like Spider-Man is fighting Arnie Grape. It’s all I see.

Still looks better than the electrocuted testicle look Jamie Foxx has going though.

The first trailer for Sony/MGM’s Robocop reboot is here and, forgive me for saying, looks really good. Yes I know that 1987 original is a classic and there’s some things that should not be messed with, but in the studio’s defense, Samuel L. Jackson wasn’t around back then. I don’t want to live in a world where Samuel L. Jackson isn’t in a movie about a robot cop.

Elite Squad’s José Padilha directs this update that sees OmniCorp looking to bring their success with drone warfare onto American soil by putting a RoboCop in every city. But they didn’t count on the man inside the machine exerting his own sense of right and wrong. Get mad if you need to but I like what I see. At least he doesn’t transform into a motorcycle.

Up until this point, the only glimpse we had of Jamie Foxx playing Electro in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 were from on-set spy photos that didn’t feature his costume or final effects. Back then I joked that he looked like Mr. Freeze’s nutsack. This was all in good fun because the effects weren’t yet finished and of course the end result would look awesome and less like a nutsack.

Now, the Comic-Con Preview issue of Entertainment Weekly has revealed that Foxx’s Electro doesn’t just look like a nutsack, but like a nutsack about to go nuclear. Seriously. You might wanna get that thing checked out, buddy.

Check out the cover below and let’s hope that Paul Giamatti‘s The Rhino doesn’t end up looking like a taint.

Unless Michel Gondry is now directing, I’d guess that the Stryofoam Mech bodysuit Paul Giamatti is awkwardly standing around in on The Amazing Spider-Man 2 set is just the pre-CGI foundation for something that won’t be revealed until the second or third trailer. However, this third-grade science fair costume does seem to be a bit more intricate than most mocap suits and may likely provide a hint of what’s to come. Take a look below and here’s hoping the final realized version looks more like the Rhino and less like a robotic moose knuckle.

Chronicle’s Dane DeHaan was announced to have won the part when director Marc Webb tweeted: “Meet Harry Osborn. So excited to have him on board. @danedehaan.”

He’ll join the returning Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone, as well as Jamie Foxx‘s Electro and Shailene Woodley‘s Mary Jane. DeHaan turned in an impressive performance in Chronicle as a troubled teen corrupted by super powers. The studio has approached G.I. Joe: Retaliation director Jon M. Chu to helm their long-gestating Masters of the Universe film. I really do feel like he’s the perfect guy for the job. While the first G.I. Joe movie was brainless fun, Retaliation looks more believable and grounded. Or as believable and grounded as a movie about ninjas fighting on cliff faces can be. Here we’re pulled into Peter Parker’s world as he web-slings high about the streets of…. Neo-Tokyo? I guess that’s the super-slick Hollywood version of New York City. Filmed on location in the Neon Skyscraper District.

In addition to the action, we’re also given a glimpse of the mystery. Who is that raspy-voiced, shadowy figure demanding to know if Dr. Curt Connors told Peter the truth about his father. Is it Norman Osborne? Peter’s dad?? Denis Leary after a heavy smoking day??? All will be revealed when The Amazing Spider-Man opens in theaters on June 30th.

The book, intuitively titled Steve Jobs, clocks in at 448 pages and is comprised of interviews with over 40 of his friends, family, and co-workers. Since the book isn’t released for a few weeks, it’s hard to know what to expect from a movie. I would assume it’s going to be like Ray or Walk the Line, but with a lot more turtlenecks and iPhones.

Your window for watching Harry and the Hendersons and Steve Austin in Hunt to Kill on a stoned whim is slowly closing. Starz has announced that they will not renew their content deal with the Netflix Instant digital streaming service meaning that Netflix will lose access to newer titles from Sony and Walt Disney as of February 28th, 2012. Though it does mean that they can use the money earmarked for the Starz deal elsewhere (and better).

ENGLEWOOD, Colo., Sept. 1, 2011 /PRNewswire/ — Starz, LLC, President and Chief Executive Officer, Chris Albrecht, issued the following statement today regarding the status of affiliation agreement renewal discussions with Netflix.

“Starz Entertainment has ended contract renewal negotiations with Netflix. When the agreement expires on February 28, 2012, Starz will cease to distribute its content on the Netflix streaming platform. This decision is a result of our strategy to protect the premium nature of our brand by preserving the appropriate pricing and packaging of our exclusive and highly valuable content. With our current studio rights and growing original programming presence, the network is in an excellent position to evaluate new opportunities and expand its overall business.”

This is annoying as now we’ll all have to work a little harder to see Lucy Lawless‘s boobs.

Sony’s teaser for The Amazing Spider-Man has leaked in advance of Comic-Con. Much like comic book and movie lovers probably did upon viewing the trailer.

Overall, it looks like a somewhat darker look at the webslinger. Here, Andrew Garfield‘s Peter is portrayed as more of a sensitive loner than Tobey Maguire‘s total nuuurd take on the character. It’s a little light on the action but we are privy to a bridge shot where something (most likely the Lizard) is throwing cars into the air with ease as well as a Spidey POV shot as he swings from Manhattan rooftops which looks like a really cool video game intro. Let’s hope those effects aren’t slated to appear in the final film.

I’ve been curious to find out how different The Amazing Spider-Man will be from the previous films, and today I think I got my answer in the form of these new stills from the film. While yesterday’s glimpse at Sony‘s new take on the arachnid showed off the costume, the web shooters, and Emma Stone looking pretty hot, there was one aspect of the film that was avoided. Namely, Spider-Man being kind of a jerk.

In these pics we see him steal food from the elderly, dress like Hollow Man, and dunk on a special needs classmate. Unless Sony chose to adapt the Spider-Man Meme. In which case, I’m in total support. (EW)

With David O. Russell having realized that it’s crazy for him to make a video game adaptation, Sony is now in talks with a non-Oscar winner to write and direct the adaptation of Uncharted: Drake‘s Fortune. It looks like Limitless‘s Neil Burger is the man for the job.

There’s no word whether or not Mark Wahlberg will remain attached to star but you’d assume he’d much rather mine for Oscar gold with a Fighter sequel than swing around in the jungle and fall in rivers where weird parasites could swim up his pee-pee. Could this be Nathan Fillion‘s chance? Or is the part totally going to be offered to Limitless star Bradley Cooper? (It’s totally going to be offered to Limitless star Bradley Cooper.) (Variety)

Sony Pictures is all about giving the people what they want. And so the people apparently want a comedy about a married couple who makes, and then loses, a sex tape. This is apparent because Sony has paid an absurdly large figure for a spec script with just that premise.

6 photosGal Gadot

The script is by Kate Angelo (who also wrote The Back-Up Plan), and it follows the adventures of the aforementioned married couple as they try to retrieve their sex tape from the hands of … whoever would steal a married couple’s sex tape. The producers are Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal and Steve Tisch, who also came up with the idea. No information on casting or anything like that, but for some reason I’m visualizing a Date Night reunion between Steve Carell and Tina Fey. That seems plausible, right? (Deadline)

Who wants to commit earth crimes anymore? That’s so boring. Cool criminals are robbing space stuff, where the real money’s at. Yesterday there was talk about director Doug Limon‘s sci-fi heist story – about a group of engineers attempting to steal crazy moon energy – finally getting off the ground. Now it might be director Will Gluck‘s (Easy A) turn to swipe his piece of the big cheese rock in the sky for Sony Pictures.

Gluck is in talks to adapt the forthcoming book Sex on the Moon by author Ben Mezrich (The Social Network). It’s a story everyone can relate to: Boy meets Girl, Boy gets NASA Internship, Boy attempts to steal a piece of the moon Johnson Space Center and sell them online to impress Girl, followed by hijinks. Space hijinks, the best kind. Good luck to Mezrich, who’s looking to continue his streak of selling his book’s movie rights before most people have even read them.

“Sex On The Moon” will be released July 12th. Gluck’s new comedy, Friends With Benefits with Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis, gets into bed with theaters July 22nd. (LA Times)

Francis Lawrence is at the helm of a period biopic about the late wizard for Sony. Wait. He’s not a superhero and he doesn’t have a wise-cracking buddy? Booooooring.

I will say that all of these projects could be good news for Robin Williams. Look at that newspaper illustration. Dude, is straight up Mork! Of course, should they not consider Williams for the role that would be a pretty big insult. If he gets sad and climbs up into that tree house that the Jack production designer let him keep, it may be weeks before we get him to come down. (Variety)

Jonah Hill, a guy who doesn’t so much star in movies as he does hang out in front of them, might start hanging out behind the camera instead.

The actor/writer is in talks to helm The Kitchen Sink for Sony Pictures, the studio from whom he co-wrote and co-stars in 21 Jump Street. Kitchen Sink centers around high school aged zombie, vampire and human who team up to fight aliens invading their hometown. Think The Breakfast Club meets all those mash-up novels publishers are churning out. In fact, writer Oren Uziel - whose screenplay was blacklisted – got the title from the idea that everything, including the kitchen sink, was in this film. Still no word yet then on how pirates, robots and leprechauns are worked in.

I’m imagining Hill having an awkward argument with one of the actors, then they make up and have a longish hug, but somebody else walks in – sees the hug – and wonders if they’re gay. What a delightful misunderstanding. (Deadline)

When it rains (production stills), it pours (production stills). Today it pours, with single images from Judge Dredd, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, and a seemingly unofficial photo from the set of Spider-Man. What can we glean from these stills?

The new Judge Dredd kind of looks like a housefly, and the post-apocalyptic motorcycle looks like something a shop class would have made in 1981. Let’s hope that the upcoming trailer will give us some dimensions that the stills have failed to. (/Film)

The new ‘Pirates‘ appears to be trying to sell audiences on the 3-D experience they will provide with this image. Given that the franchise has gotten a little stale over the past decade or so, playing up the 3-D angle will probably do more for buzz than any aspect of the story good. With Disney behind it, this could be a fun one. (Cinema Blend)

Here, we can see that Spider-Man either broke his arm or Andrew Garfield has truly awful running form. We’ve seen this costume before, and it looks a lot more interesting up close than it does from this distance. Further, this is the second time we’ve seen Spider-Man jaywalking. I don’t to get all preachy, but someone should tell Sony Studios that impressionable kids will be watching this. (Coming Soon)

Morgan Spurlock is set to open our eyes yet again after getting his newest film, The Greatest Movie Ever Sold, picked up for distribution by Sony Studios. Spurlock gets a little meta with Greatest Movie, as it’s a documentary on product placement, marketing and advertising that’s 100% funded through its use of product placement, marketing, and advertising. Consider our minds blown.

Spurlock will take audiences into the boardrooms where the advertising decisions are made that ultimately decide what you end up watching on your TV and in the theaters. Essentially, it’s “watch Morgan Spurlock sell out as hard as he can so we can see how everyone sells out.” Which, admittedly, sounds pretty interesting. Add to that Spurlock’s charm as a host, and Sony is probably looking at a film that can demonstrate a pretty solid return, especially if it was all financed as they said it was.

The Greatest Movie Ever Sold premieres at Sundance this weekend, so expect feedback in short order, but something told us Sony has already seen the film if they picked it up for distribution. Movie studios are thorough that way. (Coming Soon)

Deadline reports that producer Scott Rudin is “pretty close” to locking someone down to helm this mighty, might vessel. Nothing has been announced (or even leaked, for that matter) but it’s being reported that those in power all “like the idea” of Paul Greengrass signing on. Whether that means they actually like Greengrass, only time will tell. It’s no surprise that Sony isn’t taking this decision lightly, as the previous iteration of Cleopatra in 1963 nearly shut the doors of 20th Century Fox with its runaway budget.

It is perhaps for this reason that the name of James Cameron as director hasn’t come up in recent musings. Though he has proven to carry the Midas touch with big-budget fare such as this, Greengrass’ name indicates that the powers that be might be more interested in a grittier, more story-driven (and cheaper) take, rather than one that relies on spectacle and blue people. His resume includes the two lauded Bourne installments, as well as the divisive United 93, and less-lauded Green Zone. The Greengrass rumors alone are enough to get many to declare that the 3-D novelty has worn off, and that even aspiring 3-D blockbusters will require a story as compelling as the effects. The source material for the project, the unfortunately named Cleopatra: The Life by Stacy Schiff, has already garnered a Pulitzer, so those in line for a Yogi Bear 3-D redux had best brace for disappointment.

That said, don’t think that this won’t be a tentpole release for Sony. With the time and effort they’ve put into this project, regardless of the director, they have every intention of making this appointment viewing for just about everyone in the world with functioning eyes. And just because this epic will have “grit,” don’t be surprised to hear a funny Jewish accent from a CGI snake. I think Andy Serkis is available.

dan brown lost symbol
Sony Pictures has just stopped giving a damn, and is letting Dan Brown work on the screen adaptation of his novel, The Lost Symbol, THR is reporting. Steven Knight, the writer behind Eastern Promises, was originally slated to adapt the screenplay, but was recently replaced by Brown for reasons known only to high ranking Freemasons. Released in 2009, Brown’s third installment of the Robert Langdon saga was the fastest selling adult novel of all time, although for an “adult novel,” I must say there was a lot left to be desired in the “ATM” department.
