We then get some world building as The Huntsman and Snow White are briefly introduced. All in all, it looks like an overdone (but in the best way) effort from first-time director Rupert Sanders. Potential tag line: “This tale ain’t for fairies.”

These pictures look like pretty typical “dark fantasy” stuff, althoug I am a little surprised how different Chris Hemsworth looks from his role at Thor in, er, Thor. Also those shiny costumes are giving me a little bit of a Joel Schumacher Batman vibe. Is it too late to add nipples to the costumes? (The Playlist)

The dwarves in Huntsman don’t correlate to their Disney counterparts because in this script, their identities are tied to those of Roman emperors. That way, the producers can entertain you and make you feel dumb at the same time.

It’s not clear how the filmmakers will portray these slightly less-than-average-size actors as dwarves. Some suggestions:

• Give Kristen Stewart growth hormone until she stands 14 feet tall. Build proportionately large sets. The actors will seem dwarfish by comparison.
• Cut off the actors’ legs just above the knee. They will putter around adorably like Dorf. (I’m not sure how the Screen Actors’ Guild will respond to that.)
• A green screen or CGI or something lame like that.

From yesterday’s report that Ian McShane was cast as the dwarf leader, Caesar, you can gather that these aren’t the cartoonish dwarves we’re all accustomed to. Hoskins will play the blind dwarf, Constantine, Izzard will play the burly Tiberius, and Jones will play Claudius, the quiet one.

So that gives us six out of the seven dwarves and if I’m spotting a trend in the casting, Ricky Gervais will be the next to join. Which would be totally messed, you guys. YOU KNOW that he and Warwick Davis are besties. (THR)

Between this film, Relativity‘s Snow White, and The Hobbit, we’ll need a good amount of character actors to fill all these dwarf roles. And still, no phone calls to Warwick Davis? That’s messed. In its heated rivalry with Relativity to get its Snow White project out first, Universal has hired Hossein Amini to rewrite the Snow White and the Huntsman script. Amini, best known for writing Nicolas Winding Refn‘s Drive and Keanu Reeves‘ samurai actioner 47 Ronin, will add more exciting sword fights to the most recent draft by Evan Spiliotopoulos. Dude fighting on tree branches and swinging from long, ornate curtains, I assume.

These fights should mirror the back and forth between Universal and Relativity who are frantically trying to one-up one another in an effort to get their film in theaters first, and poison the public’s perception of big budget Snow White films like so many apples. (Deadline)

There is no question that Universal won’t be able to go from shooting (which starts in June) to release in ten months, so it looks like Relativity “wins” this release-date version of “Name That Tune.” Whether or not Relativity can make that release date remains to be seen.

If this spirited competition becomes de rigueur, we could see some Frankenstein movies this time next week. (Variety)

In case you haven’t committed the myriad Snow White movies to memory, Snow White and the Huntsman is the one with Kristen Stewart and Chris Hemsworth as the titular characters, and Charlize Theron as the evil queen. The other movie, from Relativity Media, stars Julia Roberts, Lily Collins, and Armie Hammer. It’s not known if Relativity plans to respond by moving ITS movie up to before Snow White and the Huntsman, but I’m hoping that this race continues to the point where they attempt to beam the movies back in time. I guess we’d know now if they did that, though. (The Hollywood Reporter)

Chris Hemsworth was chosen to play The Huntsman in the 9 bazillionth Snow White movie currently in development. He’ll join a cast that includes Stewart and Charlize Theron. In Universal’s version of the fairy tale, The Huntsman is sent to kill Snow White by the evil queen (Theron), but ends up protecting her instead. Yeah, no one pushes The Might Thor around, except in all the scenes where Thor gets pushed around. (Deadline)

Anyway, as writer Mark Boal furiously adds a happy ending to the script, the film has found one of their leads: Australian actor Joel Edgerton. You may know him as a guy who was almost the guy replacing Matt Damon in The Bourne Legacy. He’ll play a secret operative as part of a group of kickass, Osama-slamming warriors.

To take the role, Edgerton reportedly passed on the part of The Huntsman in Snow White and The Huntsman, one of three million Snow White movies coming out. He would have starred opposite Kristen Stewart. Maybe he’s not into that twitchy way she does everything. In the end, it probably came down to how little Bin Laden murdering is in Snow White and The Huntsman. Sometimes a guy’s gotta kill some Bin Laden. Sam Claflin will reportedly take the Huntsman role.

Claflin has scored a starring role in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, due to arrive later this month, as well as the lead role in the supernatural The Seventh Son opposite Jeff Bridges, which is in production.

And now he’s a prince. Alex Pettyfer better watch his damn back. There’s a new disarmingly attractive young actor on the prowl. Claflin will be no doubt hooking up with Kristen Stewart, the project’s Snow White. I guess he decided to do the project in spite of that. What a professional. (Deadline)

It’s not known yet whether Hemsworth will actually take the role that Viggo Mortensen considered insufficient for his needs – “sloppy seconds,” if you will. (Deadline)

Hugh Jackman has passed on the Huntsman role in Universal’s Snow White and the Huntsman. Tom Hardy and Johnny Depp both had their names pop up originally to fill the role, but nothing ever came to fruition. Viggo Mortenson was in talks for the part for two months before he dropped out. After that, they went to Jackman, as his schedule was open after Darren Aronofsky realized he shouldn’t be making a Wolverine sequel.

So, who now? If only there were an actor who is not David Arquette available to take on the role. (The Wrap)

No word yet if Jackman will take the role which previously once belonged to Tom Hardy, Johnny Depp, and Viggo Mortensen. But it’s nice to be in the top four. His number one priority right now is Wolverine but with a devastated location and no director, it doesn’t seem likely that will happen as soon as planned. It would make sense that Jackman jump on this.

Or maybe he’ll be too busy promoting that movie where he has balls on his chin. (Deadline)

Of course, this isn’t the only high-profile role that Vigs has dodged in recent weeks. He gracefully weaseled out of consideration from Superman: Man of Steel as well, giving the finger to Hollywood excess so that he may pursue roles in which he nakedly stabs Russian gangsters in bathhouses. I’m on board with that career path 100%.

The project still has principals Th Brothers Grimm: Snow White will beat this project to the gate by six months doesn’t bode well for this project that now seems to half rest on Kristen Stewart’s slumpy, brooding shoulders with the other half pressing down on Charlize Theron, making her tiny, tiny back stiffen… (Playlist)

The dwarves in this iteration of the Grimm Fairy Tale will be replaced by the taller and less numerous Viggo Mortensen, who will play the role of the titular huntsman, who is sent to kill Snow White, but ends up serving as her protector. Charlize Theron is in talks to play the evil queen, despite the fact that she’s only sort of evil in real life. The movie has been described as a gritty re-telling of the familiar story, which should comes as no surprise, because films that aren’t described as “gritty re-telling”s don’t get made these days.

Whatever you do, do NOT confuse this Universal Studios Snow White film with the one being developed by Relatively media titled The Brother’s Grimm: Snow White. That version recently announced Julia Roberts in the role of the evil queen, which makes sense, cause I heard Roberts is simply insufferable in real life (not really). (The Wrap)

Rumors have it that she’s a nervous, jittery handshake away from starring alongside Viggo Mortensen and Charlize Theron in one of the many, many new live action takes on the classic fairy tale. There are about as many Snow White re-imaginings in the works as there are tiny singing dudes in diamond mines. Universal has wanted Stewart from the beginning for the role, and I’m sure Stewart would like to put Twilight behind her. However, Universal may try to position this as the ‘new’ Twilight, so if there’s lots of saturated colors and excessive shirtlessness, listen for Stewart’s sighing about 3/4 of the way through. As I reported earlier this evening, Viggo Mortensen and Charlize Theron are also in talks to join the cast, as The Huntsman and the Evil Queen respectively. (Earlier, I also reported on bloody cyber aliens, but why am I bringing that up now?) Stewart is the star Universal’s always wanted for the role, and the twitchy woman may be ready to take on another big studio project post-Twilight. She’s apparently been in a lot of indie movies I will never, ever see.

Stewart as Snow White? As long as she doubles as Awkward the dwarf, I have no problem with that. (Hollywood Reporter)

In Universal’s take on the Snow White story, the apple-eating, dwarf-loving, prince-bait is dragged into the woods by The Huntsman, under orders from the queen. However, instead of just abandoning her, this Huntsman teaches Snow to be strong and stand up to the wicked queen. So basically, the movie is one long fairy tale training montage. Yeah, this is gonna be good…

However, like animated bug movies or action films about meteors about to destroy us all, this new take on Snow White being met with live action competitors from Disney and Relativity Media. Which adaptation is the fairest of them all? After three Snow White movies in a row, the overkill is gonna make them all about as much fun as kissing Grumpy’s butt cheek. With rival Snow White projects set up at Universal and Relativity, it was only a matter of time before the studios began their search to figure out who would play the mean, old bitch in their films. J.Lo being tied up as an “American Idol” judge has made this search a lot harder than it should be.

Universal has their eye on Charlize Theron to play the Evil Queen in Snow White And The Huntsman, and Relativity reportedly wants America’s sweetheart Julia Roberts to loan her trademark cackle to the role in Brothers Grimm: Snow White. Further casting rumors suggest that Michael Fassbender, Riley Keough, Felicity Jones, Bella Heathcote, or Alicia Vikander may join Huntsman. No dwarf casting has been mentioned yet, but Verne Troyer reportedly “likes his odds.” (Deadline and THR)

With Tom Hardy‘s dance card being full doing awesome movies like The Dark Knight Rises and paycheck movies like This Means War, he won’t be able to take the lead role in Snow White And The Huntsman as rumored. Which is okay because an official offer didn’t go out to him.

Johnny Depp is being courted for the role of the Huntsman, who goes against orders to kill Snow White and instead trains her to fight and survive. Dude, if I were the Evil Queen, I’d seriously dock his pay for that. He had ONE task! This is all contingent on whether Tim Burton decides to do Dark Shadows or not. It’s a well-known fact that Tim Burton owns Johnny Depp. He stores him in a case next to Bela Lugosi’s fingernail clippings.

Nobody has been cast as Snow White yet. It’s reported that the producers want a fresh face for this. But how cool would it be if the leads went to Natalie Portman and Jean Reno? (The Wrap)

My problem with Snow White has always been that it’s severely lacking in mixed martial arts. That won’t be a problem anymore. Universal just plunked down more cash than any of us will ever see to buy the rights to Snow White and the Huntsman.

The script, written by Greyskull‘s Evan Daugherty, reimagines the classic by having Snow White team up with the Huntsman who was ordered to kill her. They live in the forest together where he trains her to fight and survive, and hopefully build up a tolerance to apple poison. Rupert Sanders is attached to direct, with no talent lined up just yet. I’d like to suggest Krysten Ritter and Bear Grylls. If there’s anyone who can build a shelter out of dwarf carcasses, it’s that guy. (Deadline)
