SNL took the opportunity of having The Hobbit and The Office star Martin Freeman as host to make the greatest comedy sketch that anyone could feasibly do with Martin Freeman. I present, The Hobbit: Middle Earth. Am I alone in asking we just cancel Saturday Night Live and only have episodes of this on in its place from now on?

With Halloween comes the holiday season, home to many crass commercial tie-ins. NBC.com has recognized that trend and said, “Hey! Us too!” For the past few years, we’ve all developed an inferiority complex having seen ridiculously carved pumpkins that show ornate things like The Million Man march, or the Battle of Hastings if all the soldiers were Andy Dick, or whatever.

NBC has decided that good, bad, or otherwise, every pumpkin carver deserves a shot at butchering the likeness SNL characters on a pumpkin.

Right now there are only four, and they’re more recent, but have hope that one day Toonces, Gerald Ford, and myriad Joe Piscopo characters will all make the cut soon enough.

Many know Jesse Plemons as the quietly deranged and terrible villain Todd from Breaking Bad. Many more may know him as Landry from Friday Night Lights. Almost no one knows him as his Battleship character. Soon, you will know him for his portrayal of a real-life gay Saturday Night Live writer.

That should prove his range.

SNL writer Chris Kelly will direct Plemons in Other People, a film about Kelly’s move as a gay man from New York City back home to Sacramento to be with his mother who’s dying of cancer. Adam Scott and his wife are producing the film, so a handful of high-profile folks really like this project.

Not only does he get to deal with the imminent death of his mother, but Plemons’ character will also “reconcile with his conservative father’s disapproving attitude regarding his sexuality.”

My guess is this won’t be one of those films that the whole family settles down with after Thanksgiving dinner.

SNL hasn’t been doing too hot since the exodus of the last generation of stars. This would include, Kristen Wiig, Jason Sudekis, Bill Hader, and a few others. Though the show has gotten some decent critical acclaim (including the Hader episode) people just haven’t been tuning in. The Hader-hosted show on Saturday got the worst ratings in the 18-49 demo that the show has ever seen. Well, it tied for the worst ratings with last May’s Charlize Theron episode.

And if Charlize Theron can’t get eyesballs, there’s little hope for anyone else. The show was only slightly worse than the Sarah Silverman episode before that.

Sooooo, SNL is struggling. Of course, the show has always been subject to erratic ratings based on the state of its cast, so it’s premature to read too much into this. However, the lowest-rated episode of a show that’s been around for 40 years is pretty noteworthy, so you can bet that NBC is taking note.

I don’t know much about The Fault in Our Stars, but I know it’s about a sick person who falls in love with another person, who I don’t believe is sick. That’s it. The only other thing I know is that it’s supposed to be sad. Well, SNL, took that bit of information, along with the fun little Ebola scare that the US is now in the midst of, and combined the two to give us The Fault in Our Stars 2: Ebola in Our Everything.

Sarah Silverman plays the Ebola-stricken girl, who is still highly contagious, and thus not quite as lovable as the original sick girl. These sorts of things never lend themselves to explanations of why they’re funny, so just watch.

After his tour bus was hit by a Wal-Mart truck several months back, it seems that Tracy Morgan continues to face a slow and uncertain road back to recovery. Word, released through his lawyer, is that he has suffered not only brain damage, but significant other injuries that have impaired his motor skills.

Morgan’s lawyer, Benedict Morelli, when asked if the comedian would return to his career, answered, “The jury’s still out. The doctors don’t know the answer. I don’t know the answer.”

While not encouraging news, one must bear in mind that this is in response to Wal-Mart’s court documents saying that Tracy Morgan is in some part responsible for not wearing his seat belt on the bus. So, we can hope that this might just be posturing to gain sympathy, but there’s no way of knowing at this point.

A shitty situation all around, and lawsuit aside, I’m sure all parties hope for a timely recovery for Tracy Morgan.

And rather than go through the many, many examples supporting this thesis, you can just watch this extended video of all the SNL promos Chris Pratt did for his upcoming hosting of the show’s 40th season premiere.

He’s just about the most natural person in front of the camera. The comedy that most actors strive for, as well as their work to portray a level of comfort while being filmed. Ole’ Pratty’s got that in spades. I mean, who else can make seven minutes of video and have all of it be charming. It’s a gift.

A gift from him to us.

Last month, it was announced, sadly that voice of the SNL introduction, Don Pardo, had died. While “announcer” isn’t at the top of anyone’s recruiting hitlist, it was clear that SOMEONE would have to take the gig. That person has now been announced. It’s former SNL performer Darrell Hammond. The funnyman was on the show for 14 years, setting a record among the stars.

Hammond left the show in 2009, and this doesn’t mean he’ll be getting in front of the camera (or does it?) But it’s nice to know that the position stays in the family, and that the announcer could totally do the intro as Donald Trump if for some reason he needed to. Or a million other celebrities that he can impersonate.

To say that Aziz Ansari has a very distinct presence would be an understatement. He’s like a happy child who’s gotten happier by consuming seven Pixie Stix. Then put that sugar-addled monster in a suit. That’s Aziz.

In case you’re not getting the gist, check out this video which features Nasim Pedrad appearing as Aziz Ansari at the very end, in an SNL video that never made it to air. It’s nearly spot on, except the appearance isn’t a perfect fit. Of course, Nasim is a girl, so we should probably manage our expectations.

She did it for Conan, and what we’re left with are huge eyes and a huge smile, which is pretty much what Aziz Ansari is at his very core.

By Jared Jones

[UPDATE]

God damn it. I didn’t even get the story out before my hopes were dashed. Just like the Flight of the Conchords returning to HBO stuff, I knew news of Murray’s SNL return was too good to be true. TVline has now confirmed that, while Pratt and Silverman will in fact be hosting the first and second episodes of the 4oth season, respectively, it is unknown whether Murray will return to host this season.

But because I’m not about to waste a perfect good copy/paste job, here’s the original story with the proper addendums made.

*    *     *    *    *

If you’re like me, you’re probably still reeling from the news that Brooks Wheelan was fired from Saturday Night Live after only one season last July and have vowed to boycott the program until he is reinstated. But on the off chance that you were too dense to appreciate his nostalgic tattoo-based musings and are therefore still watching SNL, you should probably know that the 40th season, which kicks of September 27th, has already prepared a killer lineup for its first three episodes.

Splitsider is reporting that Chris Pratt [and] Sarah Silverman, and (ahem) BILL FREAKING MURRAY have all signed on to host next season, with Murray potentially hosting the season premiere.

While Pratt and Silverman are both brilliant choices in their own right — one starred in the highest-grossing movie of the summer, the other just won a freakin’ Emmy — let’s not act like Bill Murray returning to SNL [Brooks Wheelan's firing] isn’t the prime story here. Bill Murray [Brooks Wheelan] is a goddamn comedy legend, whose 75 [5] IMDB acting credits dating back to 1973 [2011] include such infamous roles as Carl Spackler from Caddyshack and Dr. Peter Venkman from Ghostbusters [Fighter #2 from Lose Yourself, Save Yourself and Barry from Stereotypically You]. It has been over 15 years 3 months since Murray [Wheelan] graced the SNL stage with his presence, and it’s about time.

With Murray’s return seemingly a lock, the only question now is, which of his iconic SNL characters would you like to see him bring back? Nick the Lounge Singer [Guy With Bad Tattoos]? Honker the Homeless Man [character not available]? Dick Lanky [character not available]?

We all know that Jason Sudekis‘ Ted Lasso got canned at the fictitious end of lasts season, but now he’s in the booth, where he’s able to REALLY run his mouth. Where was he when we needed him for the World Cup?

For those unfamiliar with this devil of a character, here’s the original as well:

If he continues this trajectory, he’ll be head of the U.N. by this time next year.

“Secretary General Lasso.” That sounds right.

Comedian/Actor Tracy Morgan, best known for his work on Saturday Night Live and 30 Rock, is in critical condition after a multi-car wreck on Saturday morning that killed one of his fellow passengers.

Morgan was in a limo bus leaving a comedy gig in Delaware when the bus was apparently rear-ended up a drowsy Wal-Mart truck driver, causing the bus to flip. Three passengers, including Morgan, are in critical condition, and one passenger, 63 year-old comedian James McNair, was killed in the collision.

Police have arrested the driver of the semi that hit the bus, and he’s currently being held in lieu of bail.

Morgan remains in critical condition but has demonstrated some responsiveness. More details to follow as updates come our way.

During an appearance on Norm MacDonald‘s podcast, Adam Sandler said he didn’t think he would ever host Saturday Night Live, saying that he was “slow” now, and he didn’t “know how good it would be.” Well, those are both very valid concerns to a normal person, but they sound like contrived excuses from the man who brought us Jack and Jill.

So if there were some of you out there, staring at the TV in anticipation, with a little pennant that said “Adam Sandler!” you’ll just have to get your fix from one of his terrible films, because you’re not going to see him return to his roots.

While it wasn’t discussed on the podcast, it warrants mentioning that Adam Sandler was fired from Saturday Night Live in 1995, so there could still be some bad blood there, even though he’s gone on to make billions of dollars kissing Paul Blart.

Bill Hader, best known for his portrayal of the pan-sexual weirdo club kid Stefon on SNL, will be taking his talents to HBO to “create and star in a new comedy.”

So there.

Hader has kept busy since leaving the sketch comedy show, appearing in the upcoming IFC series American Documentary, Judd Apatow‘s Trainwreck, David Wain‘s They Came Together, and Skeleton Twins. Better add a full time starring and showrunning role in a TV series to that slate, Billy.

No details are given, but we’re guessing that HBO is still in damage mode after what they did to us a year ago with The Red Wedding. We need to laugh. Oh, how we need to laugh.

In case you’re wondering if HBO is going to run out of Sunday to air their shows…probably. But they’ll probably just make more, or have government stop work on all Mondays so that Mondays are Sundays, and Sundays are some other new day that’s also really good for HBO.

I haven’t worked out all the details yet.

In a proactive move from Lorne Michaels, who is probably undergoing procedures to turn himself into a black female, SNL has picked up two black female writers. Their names are Leslie Jones and LeKendra Tookes. I’m going to pretend that “Tookes” is pronounced like the Yiddish “tuchus,” because I find that funny.

Anyway, both Tuchus and Jones was one of the finalists to be a cast member, but were picked over for Sasheer Zamata.

Hopefully, this is the end of my having to report the state of racial affair on sketch comedy shows, and we can all get back to complaining about how SNL isn’t funny anymore, regardless of the race and genders of its stars and writers.

Thanks in advance.

The more films he puts out, the more Wes Anderson finds detractors pointing out that his schtick is wearing a little thin. Timeless (and not in a good way) fashion, songs that almost sound like nursery rhymes, and deadpan characters. I see how it could get a little tiring.

However, maybe a genre shift would allow him a reprieve from these accusations. He could still do all the Wes Anderson-y stuff, but he would just have to have some people get killed. NBD.

It’s worth it just for the title reveal.

Well, this was unexpected. NBC agreed to air something awesome. Of course, they waited until 1am Saturday night/Sunday morning but still… something awesome was broadcast to the nation on the National Broadcast Company. After appearing as the musical guest on the season premiere of SNL, Arcade Fire made things weird by launching into their own after-show concert special. Directed by Roman Coppola, the style of the special was made to ape the crap that followed SNL in the early 1980′s. Look out for cameos from James Franco, Rainn Wilson, Bono, Ben Stiller, Michael Cera, Bill Hader, Zach Galifianakis, Jason Schwartzman, Eric Wareheim, and Aziz Ansari.

More of this please, NBC. Please fill your late night programming with gonzo stuff.

Jason Sudekis, whose time remaining at SNL has been the subject of speculation since his movie career began to take off with Horrible Bosses, has let the world know that he won’t be coming back. In no uncertain terms.

He said to David Letterman, “I’m definitely done. I’m not coming back in the fall.” Good luck finding a grey area there, Sudekis-on-SNL-enthusiasts!

Sudekis leaves with Bill Hader, leaving SNL in the very capable, funny, arms of all those other people that I’ve never heard of. Up next for Sudekis is We’re the Millers, which looks pretty forgettable, as well as Horrible Bosses 2.

Way to plant that franchise flag, Jason! Looks like this guy knows what he’s doing!

With Jay Leno leaving The Tonight Show for real this time and Jimmy Fallon taking over those hosting duties, NBC has confirmed suspicions that Seth Meyers will replace Fallon as Late Night host. “It always seemed like a logical next move,” says the SNL veteran and Weekend Update host. “It was just competing with the very emotional idea of leaving a place I have been for a very long time. But if you are going to do that, it seems like you might as well just move a hallway or two.” Makes sense. He probably won’t even need to hire movers.

Meyers will wrap up SNL’s fall season before moving to Late Night this winter, and then probably return to SNL when Leno decides he’s not giving up The Tonight Show after all. (NY Times)

We’ve been left to wonder all summer whether or not Jason Sudeikis would return for the next season of SNL. During last season’s finale, Kristen Wiig was given an emotional send-off while Sudeikis looked pissed off in the wings. Next, Andy Samberg announced that he was leaving as well. That left us all to wonder what Suds was going to do.

And now, the word is in that he’ll return at least until January. Says Lorne Michaels:

“Jason is in,” Mr. Michaels, the show’s executive producer, said in an interview Tuesday night.

He was referring, of course, to Jason Sudeikis, the longtime cast member who, since the show’s finale last May, has been the subject of many rumors that he would be departing after seven seasons. Mr. Michaels said he was relieved to have the comedian back in the cast this season. [NY Times]

Is this due to the election? It seems so. As the show’s only white guy he is obligated to continue portraying Mitt Romney and Joe Biden. After that, all bets are off. He’ll have to be released eventually as demand for him to play the horny best friend in goofy comedies is at an all-time high.

When SNL wrapped up its season this past Saturday, they ended with an emotional sketch sending off Kristen Wiig. It’s been widely speculated that Wiig would leave the show to pursue brighter pavilions. But what of the other cast members who were expected to hang it up?

The Wrap caught up with Lorne Michaels to discuss the fates of Andy Samberg and Jason Sudeikis. Michaels was especially vague when asked of any cast additions or departures.

“You never know,” Michaels said. “I think everyone gets through the season and just the level of fatigue by the end is just overwhelming, and it’s a very emotional time. I’ve had a rule since the second season, which is to not make any decisions in June. We’ll see in July.”

One cast member who has made mention of his intention to stay is Fred Armisen. He noted that he hopes to continue his work on both Portlandia and SNL as he has done for the past two seasons. Otherwise, he’ll have to find another outlet for his creepy genius.

It’s looking like Mitt “Mittens” Romney is in position to take the Republican nomination this summer for the presidential election, which means that he’s got about six months to turn himself into one heckuva likable guy.

Of course, that means a mandatory stop on SNL to prove that he can laugh at himself.

What once was a charming, spontaneous act by some politicians has started to feel a little forced, like the show and the candidate are going through the motions.

That’s not to say that all the appearances have been duds, but any time you get a non-performer on stage to make people laugh, the results will be mixed. Here are a half-dozen examples of which way these cameos can go.

Don’t forget to vote this November.

Rudy Giuliani

In the late 1990’s and early 2000’s, SNL had a real problem. That problem was that the show couldn’t offer up an impression or spoof of a celebrity without having that celebrity on one of the shows to “confront” the cast member doing the impersonation. Even the first time I remember it being done (Joe Pesci and Robert De Niro), it felt forced and cheap, and every subsequent time more so.

Here’s an example of a bizarre funny sketch that at no point needed an appearance by the actual Janet Reno. Further, seeing her dancing doesn’t really do anything other than make my eyes bleed. Sure, she’s a good sport for sanctioning this mockery, but that doesn’t exactly make her funny, now does it?

Looks like the burgeoning movie careers of Saturday Night Live cast members are forcing the show to hire some new faces for us to unfairly criticize (at least until they impress us with their Mitt Romney impressions). Splitsider reports that a range of hopefuls from New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles recently auditioned for Lorne Michaels, Seth Myers, and other producers.

It’s unclear how many new performers will join the cast or which performers will be departing, but it would make sense that Kristen Wiig would move on to more carefully chosen projects while Jason Sudeikis will take the horny guy role in literally every upcoming comedy.

The post The 7 Worst ‘SNL’ Musical Performances Of All Time appeared first on Screen Junkies.

]]>
Internet sensation Lana Del Rey performed on Saturday Night Live over the weekend, and her performance is being called one of the worst in the show’s long, long history. Though new to the music landscape, she had already been met with skepticism, with many feeling her indie credibility was largely manufactured, a position that was supported by her shoddy performance.

She was selected for the show due exclusively to buzz, as her output at the time of her selection consisted of a two-song web EP. As such, it would appear that Del Rey wasn’t prepeared for the gig. She appeared visibly nerous and seemed to make several mistakes during the performances, prompting no less than Brian Williams to write an email to Gawker panning her performance.

Here are a handful of other notorious SNL performances that would have undoubtedly upset Brian Williams as well.

Ke$ha

The performances here fall into two groups, largely. Performances by shitty artists that are as shitty as the artists themselves and performances by decent artists that are shitty. This performance is the former.

It’s unclear what makes Ke$ha a star, so I’m comfortable assuming it’s her eagerness to get on her back for everyone in the music industry, from record execs to the guys that sell bootleg t-shirts outside concert venues.

This performance would seem to support my theory, as this video defies all logic blending astronauts, patriotism, and lots of spectacle with a song that’s pretty much about being a drunk white trash whore.

This performance is exactly as good as it should be.

Sinead O’Connor

This will sound horribly jaded, but I find it quaint that, as recently as 1992, people were mortified by the fact that Sinead O’Connor tore up a picture of the pope at the end of her a capella rendition of “War,” urging the audience and viewers to “fight the real enemy.” What do you think would happen if someone like Adele tore up a picture of Pope Benedict next weekend? I would guess you would hear a hiccup, a squeaky fart, then some polite applause.

Adding to the haunting nature of O’Connor’s performance is Lorne Michaels’ now-infamous decision to not light up the applause sign, creating an even more uncomfortable silence all the way to commercial.

Sick and tired of battling Saturday Night Live with dumbass sketch shows, Fox has devised a plan to get theyselfs a piece of the younger male audience. Cartoons.

Fox Entertainment President Kevin Reilly announced the new strategy at the TCA press tour over the weekend. He noted that one of the problems with the Fox Sunday night block of animated programming is that a lot of material is developed that could never work in prime-time. It only makes sense to air that stuff after Grandma goes to bed.

Adult Swim’s Nick Weidenfeld and Warren the Ape’s Hend Baghdad have been placed in charge of the new unit, which is expected to role out the new late-night Saturday slate in January of 2013. Fingers crossed that this awesome idea isn’t perverted into the animated adventures of Nick Cannon and Wanda Sykes. (Deadline)

You know your balls taste great when an ice cream is named in their honor. Congratulations, Alec Baldwin! That’s right. Ice cream makers Ben & Jerry have concocted “Schweddy Balls,” a new flavor based off Baldwin’s famous NPR-skewering Saturday Night Live skit.

Ben & Jerry’s spokesman Sean Greenwood says, “We’ve always been a company that has had a sense of humor.” Sometimes, he said, they spend time discussing serious business and other times “we just do fun.” And what’s more fun than double entendre?

Schweddy Balls will be available for a limited time in about 30 percent of stores that carry Ben & Jerry’s ice cream. In honor of the new flavor, here are seven movie and TV inspired flavors that Ben & Jerry’s should totally make.

Truffle Shuffle

Get that gut jiggling in no time! Vanilla ice cream loaded with chunks of chocolate truffles and broken bits of Baby Ruth. You’ll have no trouble gaining access to the gate, but you might have some trouble fitting through it!

Everybody Loves Rum Raisin

This Italian-inspired gelato will take you home again. This creamy dessert boasts succulent rum-soaked raisins, so don’t plan on driving home from the scoop shop! Unless your brother is a cop.

The Human Centipede’s Fudge Tunnel

Wait until you wrap your lips around this Core Concoction. Based upon the hit film The Human Centipede, it’s three layers of vanilla, strawberry, and Asian green tea surrounding a column of dark German fudge. Perfect to share with friends!! You won’t be able to keep your mouth off of it.

Game Of Cones

Winter is coming. And it’s going to be delicious! This cold strawberry-swirled pint is packed with chocolate-coated waffle cone. Everyone is losing their heads about it.

Rocky Road Trip: Beer Pong

It’s time to hit the road to Flavor Country. This vanilla malt is overflowing with peanut butter, pretzels, and chocolate mice. Grab your brosefs and pledge that you love it. Proceeds from all sales go to paying DJ Qualls’ rent.

Total Reese’s-Call

There’s no way you can forget how delicious this recipe tastes. Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups and Reese’s Pieces blended together in red cocoa ice cream will simply take your breath away. Made exclusively with cream from three-uddered cows, your eyes will bug out for this taste of the future!!

Kramer vs. Krispy Kremer

Life is so full of tough choices. But there should be no difficulty picking your favorite ice cream. This glazed donut flavored treat is a no brainer. Heaping with generous amounts of rainbow and chocolate sprinkles, will it be your favorite? You be the judge!!

Michael Bolton is probably most famous for providing the inspiration for a character’s name in Office Space. But after watching this music video from Andy Samberg et al, I think his designation as a “no-talent assclown” in that movie was a little unfair. Not only is he a good singer, but he does a pretty uncanny Al Pacino in Scarface!

It’s a pretty funny video, which should be no surprise given that the Digital Shorts are routinely the best part of “SNL” these days. Captain Jack Sparrow!
