Seth Meyers To Take Over ‘Late Night With Jimmy Fallon’; Carson Daly Still Just Doing The Same Thing

With Jay Leno leaving The Tonight Show for real this time and Jimmy Fallon taking over those hosting duties, NBC has confirmed suspicions that Seth Meyers will replace Fallon as Late Night host. “It always seemed like a logical next move,” says the SNL veteran and Weekend Update host. “It was just competing with the very emotional idea of leaving a place I have been for a very long time. But if you are going to do that, it seems like you might as well just move a hallway or two.” Makes sense. He probably won’t even need to hire movers.

Meyers will wrap up SNL’s fall season before moving to Late Night this winter, and then probably return to SNL when Leno decides he’s not giving up The Tonight Show after all. (NY Times)

Jason Sudeikis Isn’t Leaving ‘SNL’

We’ve been left to wonder all summer whether or not Jason Sudeikis would return for the next season of SNL. During last season’s finale, Kristen Wiig was given an emotional send-off while Sudeikis looked pissed off in the wings. Next, Andy Samberg announced that he was leaving as well. That left us all to wonder what Suds was going to do.

And now, the word is in that he’ll return at least until January. Says Lorne Michaels:

“Jason is in,” Mr. Michaels, the show’s executive producer, said in an interview Tuesday night.

He was referring, of course, to Jason Sudeikis, the longtime cast member who, since the show’s finale last May, has been the subject of many rumors that he would be departing after seven seasons. Mr. Michaels said he was relieved to have the comedian back in the cast this season. [NY Times]

Is this due to the election? It seems so. As the show’s only white guy he is obligated to continue portraying Mitt Romney and Joe Biden. After that, all bets are off. He’ll have to be released eventually as demand for him to play the horny best friend in goofy comedies is at an all-time high.

Who Besides Kristen Wiig Will Leave ‘SNL’?

When SNL wrapped up its season this past Saturday, they ended with an emotional sketch sending off Kristen Wiig. It’s been widely speculated that Wiig would leave the show to pursue brighter pavilions. But what of the other cast members who were expected to hang it up?

The Wrap caught up with Lorne Michaels to discuss the fates of Andy Samberg and Jason Sudeikis. Michaels was especially vague when asked of any cast additions or departures.

“You never know,” Michaels said. “I think everyone gets through the season and just the level of fatigue by the end is just overwhelming, and it’s a very emotional time. I’ve had a rule since the second season, which is to not make any decisions in June. We’ll see in July.”

One cast member who has made mention of his intention to stay is Fred Armisen. He noted that he hopes to continue his work on both Portlandia and SNL as he has done for the past two seasons. Otherwise, he’ll have to find another outlet for his creepy genius.

The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly: Political Appearances On ‘SNL’

It’s looking like Mitt “Mittens” Romney is in position to take the Republican nomination this summer for the presidential election, which means that he’s got about six months to turn himself into one heckuva likable guy.

Of course, that means a mandatory stop on SNL to prove that he can laugh at himself.

What once was a charming, spontaneous act by some politicians has started to feel a little forced, like the show and the candidate are going through the motions.

That’s not to say that all the appearances have been duds, but any time you get a non-performer on stage to make people laugh, the results will be mixed. Here are a half-dozen examples of which way these cameos can go.

Don’t forget to vote this November.

Rudy Giuliani

Giuliani and SNL enjoyed a very symbiotic relationship during his tenure as Mayor. He comforted America when the show returned after 9/11, reminding the country that it’s okay to laugh again, though not necessarily at SNL, because it’s not always that funny.

While Giuliani was never the most charismatic speaker or guest on SNL, he did feel like a godfather of the show, and that bit of goodwill made everyone a little more at ease, and a little more inclined to laugh. Even the fact that he’s championing his efforts to clean up the city doesn’t seem so self-aggrandizing, but rather a little charming.

Giuliani’s genuine enthusiasm for being on the show, coupled with Norm Macdonald’s mumbly creepiness makes for one of the successful appearances by a politician on SNL.

Don’t get too excited, though. They’re not all winners.

In the late 1990’s and early 2000’s, SNL had a real problem. That problem was that the show couldn’t offer up an impression or spoof of a celebrity without having that celebrity on one of the shows to “confront” the cast member doing the impersonation. Even the first time I remember it being done (Joe Pesci and Robert De Niro), it felt forced and cheap, and every subsequent time more so.

Here’s an example of a bizarre funny sketch that at no point needed an appearance by the actual Janet Reno. Further, seeing her dancing doesn’t really do anything other than make my eyes bleed. Sure, she’s a good sport for sanctioning this mockery, but that doesn’t exactly make her funny, now does it?

Expect Some Cast Shake-Ups At ‘SNL’

Looks like the burgeoning movie careers of Saturday Night Live cast members are forcing the show to hire some new faces for us to unfairly criticize (at least until they impress us with their Mitt Romney impressions). Splitsider reports that a range of hopefuls from New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles recently auditioned for Lorne Michaels, Seth Myers, and other producers.

It’s unclear how many new performers will join the cast or which performers will be departing, but it would make sense that Kristen Wiig would move on to more carefully chosen projects while Jason Sudeikis will take the horny guy role in literally every upcoming comedy.

The 7 Worst ‘SNL’ Musical Performances Of All Time

Internet sensation Lana Del Rey performed on Saturday Night Live over the weekend, and her performance is being called one of the worst in the show’s long, long history. Though new to the music landscape, she had already been met with skepticism, with many feeling her indie credibility was largely manufactured, a position that was supported by her shoddy performance.

She was selected for the show due exclusively to buzz, as her output at the time of her selection consisted of a two-song web EP. As such, it would appear that Del Rey wasn’t prepeared for the gig. She appeared visibly nerous and seemed to make several mistakes during the performances, prompting no less than Brian Williams to write an email to Gawker panning her performance.

Here are a handful of other notorious SNL performances that would have undoubtedly upset Brian Williams as well.

Ke$ha

The performances here fall into two groups, largely. Performances by shitty artists that are as shitty as the artists themselves and performances by decent artists that are shitty. This performance is the former.

It’s unclear what makes Ke$ha a star, so I’m comfortable assuming it’s her eagerness to get on her back for everyone in the music industry, from record execs to the guys that sell bootleg t-shirts outside concert venues.

This performance would seem to support my theory, as this video defies all logic blending astronauts, patriotism, and lots of spectacle with a song that’s pretty much about being a drunk white trash whore.

This performance is exactly as good as it should be.

Sinead O’Connor

This will sound horribly jaded, but I find it quaint that, as recently as 1992, people were mortified by the fact that Sinead O’Connor tore up a picture of the pope at the end of her a capella rendition of “War,” urging the audience and viewers to “fight the real enemy.” What do you think would happen if someone like Adele tore up a picture of Pope Benedict next weekend? I would guess you would hear a hiccup, a squeaky fart, then some polite applause.

Adding to the haunting nature of O’Connor’s performance is Lorne Michaels’ now-infamous decision to not light up the applause sign, creating an even more uncomfortable silence all the way to commercial.

Fox To Fight SNL With Cartoons

Sick and tired of battling Saturday Night Live with dumbass sketch shows, Fox has devised a plan to get theyselfs a piece of the younger male audience. Cartoons.

Fox Entertainment President Kevin Reilly announced the new strategy at the TCA press tour over the weekend. He noted that one of the problems with the Fox Sunday night block of animated programming is that a lot of material is developed that could never work in prime-time. It only makes sense to air that stuff after Grandma goes to bed.

Adult Swim’s Nick Weidenfeld and Warren the Ape’s Hend Baghdad have been placed in charge of the new unit, which is expected to role out the new late-night Saturday slate in January of 2013. Fingers crossed that this awesome idea isn’t perverted into the animated adventures of Nick Cannon and Wanda Sykes. (Deadline)

Michael Bolton is probably most famous for providing the inspiration for a character’s name in Office Space. But after watching this music video from Andy Samberg et al, I think his designation as a “no-talent assclown” in that movie was a little unfair. Not only is he a good singer, but he does a pretty uncanny Al Pacino in Scarface!

Timberlake To Put “Dick” Into ‘SNL’ Season Finale “Box”

Wow, that title was a bit of a stretch. However, this Twitter-based rumor is far from it: looks like Justin Timberlake will host this year’s final episode of “SNL” on May 21st.

T-Lake’s been on”Saturday Night Live” so many times, I think they’re gonna finally give him the infamous “Official Steve Martin ‘SNL’ Hangout Guy Plaque.” So it makes sense to have him host the finale, which is typically a strong episode with a proven host. Last year’s May finale host was Alec Baldwin, and the year before was Will Ferrell. I’m sure Andy Samberg is already thinking about a Digital Short to end all Digital Shorts. I assume it won’t be a musical number of some kind.

How was this found out? The news was leaked via a Twitter conversation – not a Twitter war, sadly. Here’s what went down: an “SNL” follower wrote…

I didn’t realize that @nbcsnl isn’t back until May 7th!!! What am I going to do!? Is Tina Fey the season finale!? #SNL #aaahhhh

To which one of the show’s Twitterators replied:

9 Ridiculously Funny Norm MacDonald Moments

Tonight, Norm MacDonald’s new show, “Sports Show with Norm MacDonald,” premieres on Comedy Central. I’m big fan of Norm, so I’ll be turning in. After all, I’m not going to pass up a chance to watch the man who eviscerated the ESPY’s host his vary own sports show. And in honor of his new program, I’ve put together nine ridiculously funny Norm MacDonalnd moments. It’s a great way to look back at the offbeat humor that has fueled his career. It’s also a great way to pad an article with Youtube videos. Enjoy.

9. The White House Correspondence Dinner

When performing in front of someone as important as the President of the United States, most comedians would chose to play it safe. Not Norm. He chose to play it stupid. Not everyone got it, but considering the audience, that’s a good thing.

8. “Who Wants to be a Millionaire”

This clip isn’t really funny, but I put it on the list anyway. Why? Because it proves that while MacDonald might play a buffoon, he’s actually quite smart. Then again, it was celebrity week, so I’m sure the questions were dumbed down. Even so.

6. Norm Gets Fired

Former NBC President Don Ohlmeyer was good friends with O.J. Simpson. As such, Norm’s constant O.J. jokes didn’t go over too well. It’s rumored to be the reason Norm was canned from SNL’s Weekend Update. Either way, his termination made for a hilarious exit-interview on “The Late Show with David Letterman.”

5. Norm as Larry King

How do you make fun of a guy who makes as many random, nonsensical statements as Larry King? Bring in someone who is equally adept at making random, nonsensical statements.

Norm MacDonald is such a comedic genius that you don’t even have to be a fan of rape jokes to appreciate the humor in this scene from Dirty Work.

All and all, Norm was actually a pretty big asshole to Courtney Thorne-Smith during her interview with Conan O’Brien. But at least it made for one of the funniest interviews in the history of the show.

Here it is; the mother of all Norm MacDonald clips. From O.J., to Jordan, to Elway, no athlete was spared. I wonder why ESPN never asked him back?

Wayne And Garth Predict Oscars, Party Like It’s 1991

Dana Carvey hosted SNL this weekend. I think he did, although I could have just stepped into a halfway entertaining time machine and emerged in a bygone era of late night television. Mike Myers joined Carvey for the show’s cold open, a new(!) episode of Aurora, Illinois’ favorite public access show, “Wayne’s World.” The duo, looking every bit the same as the last time we saw them, recited their same old jokes in their same exact set. Seriously, do they have all the old sets and props in storage? Have they preserved Rob Schneider‘s Makin’ Copies-guys’ Xerox machine somewhere? Stupid question, it’s clearly in the Smithsonian. The duo ran down their picks for the upcoming Academy Awards, and made numerous dick jokes about Winter’s Bone, or as is Myers’ M.O., the same Winter’s Bone joke numerous times. The whole sketch, and episode, was mildly comforting and at the same time irritating, much like a childhood security blanket that’s gotten scratchy or threadbare from being washed too many times. It was fun to see that the jokes, sets, characters, and performers hadn’t changed a bit in 20 years, but that’s also what made it kind of a downer. (Slashfilm)

Pee-wee Herman Has A Drinking Problem

If you’re like me, the combination of the words “Gwyneth Paltrow,” “hosting,” and”Saturday Night Live” caused you to unplug your television until Sunday morning. Which means you missed this fun Digital Short starring Andy Samberg and Pee-wee Herman.

In the short, Samberg coaxes Herman off the milk-only wagon and learns that the beloved children’s entertainer has a bit of a problem. No, not that one. A drinking problem this time. Further proof that tequila changes a man. One minute your making ice cream soup with a room full of puppets, the next you’re assaulting police officers and respected news anchors. Totally reckless. Some drinking buddies are just bad for one another.

Jesse Eisenberg To Become SNL’s Most Awkward Host Ever

Watching Jesse Eisenberg‘s interview on Conan made me realize that playing awkward, darkly weird Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg in The Social Network may not have been that much of a stretch. Now he’s getting ready to host Saturday Night Live on January 29th. I’m imagining the very end, where everybody hugs each other, and Eisenberg refuses to be touched. He just keeps staring at Abby Elliot. Staring and staring and staring. And she knows he’s staring. So Abby decides to avoid him at the wrap party afterwards. He goes home early and punches a framed Zombieland poster on the wall. “What’s WRONG with me?!”

Of course, if that were the case, his show would still be a lot better than the January Jones episode.

Meanwhile, Dana Carvey will return to 30 Rockefeller Plaza on February 5th, which brings up an interesting question: really?

I know he’s an SNL legend, and Church Lady can (and should) kick all of Kristen Wiig‘s running characters’ asses, but usually hosts have something to promote or have been working recently. Eh, y’know, screw it. If Mike Myers is there and the whole episode is a giant Wayne’s World reunion, then I say, “party on, Dana Carvey!” *Plays Air Guitar* (TV Squad)

They always manage to churn out a catchy beat with a glossy, rap cliché-riddled music video. Andy Samberg and Jorma Taccone take the verses this time around with Akon handling the infectious hook. If you look hard you can catch Akiva Schaffer, the third Lonely Island member, giving the the guys a pedicure. Let’s all scream this groove from the rooftops next time we’re lucky enough to lay with a girl, in the biblical sense.

I don’t watch "Saturday Night Live" anymore, but I do watch the popular videos that make their way to the web the following Monday. This week, Jon Hamm hosted with musical guest Rihanna. Of course Andy Samberg and Rihanna did a digital short sequel to "Shy Ronnie" entitled "Ronnie and Clyde." It’s not as funny as the first, but Rihanna is hot and I like that she returns to the bank to snag hostage Jon Hamm so she can bang him.

Jon Hamm also appeared in a sketch in which he parodies Best Cry Ever Guy. If you don’t know who that is, shame on you for not being more addicted to the Internet. You can check out the original video here and then the ‘SNL’-ized, Hamm-ized version after the jump.

Denzel Washington Does His Denzel Washington Impression

"Saturday Night Live’s" new cast member Jay Pharoah does an impeccable Denzel Washington. He did a sketch about Washington working retail as research for a part, and Pharoah totally captured Washington’s sound, his cadence, his laugh. Washington heard about that a lot as he spoke to reporters about his new movie, Unstoppable.

The thing is, when I asked him if he heard the impression, he kind of started doing the impression back to me. He’s in a press conference with costars Rosario Dawson and Tony Scott. From the opening laughter to the way he turns the question around on me and tries to prod me, that’s exactly how Pharoah played it.

Amy Poehler To Host ‘SNL’ Season Premiere; Jenny Slate May Get Sh*t-Canned

Amy Poehler will host the 36th season premiere of "Saturday Night Live" on September 25 with musical guest Katy Perry. That’s on a Saturday. Considering that everyone is either leaving (Will Forte) or getting fired (possibly Jenny Slate), the "SNL" alum and star of "Parks and Recreation" might have to calm the nerves of newbie cast members.

Hopefully it won’t turn out like last year’s season premiere, in which Jenny Slate uttered the word "f*ckin’" on live television. You can’t do that kind of stuff, Jenny Slate! Now her head is on Lorne Michaels‘s chopping block. I don’t watch the show anymore, but I’ve been told by people who do that Slate is groan-worthy. If you’re going to shoot off at the mouth like sailor you should at least get people laughing. Off with her head, Lorne! (Deadline)

Will Forte Peaces Out of ‘SNL’

Sorry all you Fart Face fans, but the man behind the character you love so dearly is packing his fart face up and traveling on. Will Forte will not return to "Saturday Night Live" for the show’s 36th season. Neither NBC nor Forte’s people would offer a P.C. response as to why, but apparently the split is "amicable," like they always are according to lawyers.

The actor is now free to pursue other projects that aren’t on Saturday night or live. The question is, can he remain relevant in movies for long if he’s not continuely exposed to fans on "SNL"? MacGruber didn’t do him any favors. I think Forte’s a funny guy and all, but he’s not exactly a household name like Will Ferrell was when he decided to jump Lorne Michael’s ship. Unless your household is particularly fond of twisted, weird-ass sketches. In which case, your family should have dinner together more often. (Movieline)

‘MacGruber’ Bombs at Box Office (Get it? Bombs!)

Bad news for MacGruber and Co. Despite a relentless Internet marketing campaign and surprisingly positive reviews (relatively speaking), the film has completely tanked at the box office.

The Village Voice is reporting that the SNL spin off pulled in a paltry $4.1 million over the weekend, included a disastrous $1.5 million from its opening night. Even with a budget of only $10 million, the results are disappointing. And the worst part of it all is that MacGruber‘s failure has basically killed any chance of me selling my Goat Boy spec script. Screw you, Will Forte! You’ve crushed my dreams, yet again! (Box Office Mojo)

SNL Movie Spinoff Success

With the Will Forte vehicle MacGruber due out in theaters this Friday, I decided to look into the funny little history of "Saturday Night Live’s" adventures on the silver screen. Generally the movies were spun off from their more popular sketches (how the Roxbury guys were popular, I’ll never know).

I wanted to grade SNL spinoffs that were regular sketches with regular cast members. I also wanted to compare the merits of each using the two only barometers for success that Hollywood has: critical reception and, of course, money. Further, I studied a particular SNL cast member, and their career success as compared to their SNL movie vehicle.

"Saturday Night Live" is officially a hit again thanks to Betty White and her whore mouth. The Facebook-supported, hood-approved actress officially rocked it and helped the show score its highest ratings since a pre-election November 2008 episode.

Many of the episode’s sketches coasted by on the "Grandma says naughty words" schtick of which White is clearly a master. In fact, her muffin sketch is all anyone is talking about today as cubicles everywhere tune into "SNL" via Hulu. I hope I don’t get caught by the boss but whatever. It wouldn’t be the first time I was fired because of an old woman’s vagina. (Reuters)

‘SNL’ With Betty White and Jay-Z Is Hood-Approved

Betty White and Jay-Z will reportedly squash their long-standing beef for an upcoming episode of "Saturday Night Live." Hova will appear as the musical guest on the May 8th episode which White is hosting after being cyber-bullied into taking the gig.

For those worried that White is not up to the after-hours task had best check themselves.

"It’s lovely, and at my age it’s certainly unexpected. I’ve got so much energy, it’s ridiculous. I love working. My schedule is a feverish one, and I’m used to that."

Betty White’s album is expected to drop on Roc Nation before the end of the year. Streets is hungry for this one. (MTV)

Tina Fey hosted "Saturday Night Live" this past weekend and was lucky enough to have Justin Bieber as the musical guest. So of course they put together a pedophile sketch. It’s understandable that Fey would want to rub Johnson’s Baby Shampoo in Bieber‘s hair, but she should squirt some in has mouth while she’s at it. Kid’s talkin’ way too gangsta lately.

Betty White Confirms ‘SNL’ Appearance; Fact or Geriatric Lunacy?

Hip grandma Betty White will soon be staying up nine hours past her bedtime. People caught up with the aged star at Elton John‘s Oscars viewing party where she confirmed the rumors that she will appear on an upcoming episode of Saturday Night Live, though she doesn’t know when. Originally, it was believed she would appear on a "Women of Comedy" episode alongside Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, and Molly Shannon but Lorne Michaels has shot down those reports.

It’s not known whether she will host or provide a cameo but White is just happy for to be a part of the confusing campaign. "I don’t know why or how," says White, "but it’s been wonderful." Though at the age of 88, I’m sure more than a few things confuse her. Like young women nowadays always putting their elbows on the table. Back in her day, a lady knew how to ensnare a man. (People)

Internet Pressures Betty White to Host ‘SNL’

We may have a problem on our hands as the combined might of college students and their Internet-savvy grandparents are realizing their strength. In the past week, not only have Facebook users managed to make a pickle more popular than Canadian ass-rockers Nickleback, but they may have also convinced Lorne Michaels to hire the dumb Golden Girl to host an upcoming episode of Saturday Night Live. A group of Betty White-heads nearly half a million strong took to the social networking site and petitioned for their favorite octogenarian to headline the show. And now Michaels is reportedly trying to put together a show that will work with White’s advanced age. From Michael Aussiello:

White would not be hosting alone. Rather, I hear SNL is putting together a “Women of Comedy” episode that would team the former Rose Nylund with several of her younger contemporaries. Ex-SNL MVP Molly Shannon is on board, I hear, and feelers have also been put out to Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.

When told of the wellspring of support from her fans, White was reportedly thrilled/ready for dinner at 4pm. (EW)

I have to admit I don’t watch Saturday Night Live much these days, but I do enjoy me a hilarious digital short every now and then. I feel like the Andy Samberg shorts are on a totally different level than the rest of the show.
