This is either going to be brilliant, or brilliant but cancelled.

You can’t keep a genius/asshole down. Dan Harmon has brushed the NBC brush-off off and has moved on to developing a multi-camera sitcom pilot for Fox according to TV Guide. Though his bosses at Sony saw fit not to renew his Community contract, Harmon is now free to bring something else crazy and wonderful into the world.

This is currently just a pilot order but it seems that Fox has commited themselves to becoming a home for cool comedy. New Girl was a huge hit and will soon have The Mindy Project and Ben and Kate airing in the same comedy block. Whatever Harmon is cooking up would be right at home with that bunch. Let’s hope this becomes a breakout hit instead of going the way of the 784 shows* Fox has canceled in the past fifteen years.

*estimated number

When was the last time you hugged Willie Aames?

Losing Robert Hegyes (Welcome Back, Kotter’s Epstein) has taken us here at Screen Junkies by surprise. I guess we just figured that he’d always be around and took for granted the fact that life is fleeting. We never called to check in on him or made sure to get birthday cards mailed before it was too late. Today has been a wake up call.

We need to start showing our beloved sitcom stars how much they really mean to us. That we appreciate them and the gift of repeated laughter they’ve given us over the years. That all changes today. Alexander Payne or Quentin Tarantino shouldn’t have to save them for obscurity to make us love them again. If you see any of the beloved sitcom characters below, please give them a hug from us.

J.J. Evans

J.J. Evans made America his bitch with three simple syllables, DYN-O-MITE. To deny his charm is to deny all things we know to be true. He’s even won over white supremacists. Here’s photographic proof.

Buddy Lembeck

Whose better than Buddy Lembeck? Eight is Enough star Willie Aames captured lightning in a bottle for a second time when he was cast as a loveable dope on Charles In Charge. You could always count on Buddy for the best punchlines.

With two hit shows under his belt, Aames himself is no stranger to keeping busy. In fact, he’s got a pretty diverse resume. Child star, drug addict, born again Christian, ordained minister, furniture builder, suicide survivor, financial advisor, bankruptcy petitioner, and assistant cruise ship director.

“Sh’yeah, right. As if we wouldn’t notice.” - Wayne Cambpell

So Ashton replaced Charlie and Two and a Half Men is tanking. We’d care more if the show weren’t so damn stupid to begin with. Replacing characters on a TV show is a pretty clear sign that its days are numbered. Still, some shows have soldiered on despite losing key members of their cast. It’s not really ever a good idea, but it does sometimes “work,” whatever that means. Here are seven examples of bad cast change choices that made us particularly angry.

Dos Beckys – Roseanne

As if the original Becky weren’t irritating enough, the people who brought you John Goodman being fat as fuck decided to replace Becky. Yes, yes, hurr durr, they make jokes about it. Yawwwwwwwwwwn. Don’t care. This is a pretty good demarcation point for when the show goes from uncomfortable to unbearable.

Growing Pains vs. Family Ties: Magical Aging Cage Match

Even when I was eight-years old I was grotesquely offended by the magical aging of television children. Did the producers of Family Ties really expect us to not notice that Brian Bonsall turned from a glowing baby child to a surly grown up with throat tattoos overnight? Oh wait… that was later. Either way, not to be outdone, Growing Pains decided to ape what Family Ties was doing again and age a baby into an irritating ginger girl who looked like she was cloned from one of Shirley Temple’s curls.

Perhaps there is a wacky neighbor role for Korn's Jonathan Davis.

Soon it will be okay to laugh at Fred Durst. It will be difficult, but it will be okay. The Limp Bizkit frontman turned film director has signed a deal with CBS to develop his own half-hour sitcom. Tentatively titled Douchebag, the show will star Durst as a rock legend trying to balance his star status with raising a family. Perhaps there is a wacky neighbor role for Korn’s Jonathan Davis.

Elsewhere in Los Angeles, Marc Maron has just hung himself.

The idea was spearheaded by Durst’s manager John Schneider, who also put a similar deal in place starring his brother Rob. Should this article be read by any future survivors of the robot apocalypse, you know who your target in the past is. His name is John Schneider. This is who your cyborg assassins should focus on eliminating. It’s mankind’s only hope. (Deadline)

After hearing the news that Snoop Dogg will be starring in his own sitcom, I immediately took to Twitter. Why? Because that’s what #ssholes do.

At any rate, I was quickly drawn into a hash-tag battle over what the show should be called . Rather than let this pure comedic gold go to waste, I thought I’d post the results. The titles were all created by Screen Junkies unless otherwise noted. Enjoy! And special thanks to @TVDoneWright.

The show, which is the top rated program on Thursday nights, will continue on CBS at least through the 2013-2014 season. Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady’s show about nerdy scientists trying to navigate the world of, well, anything non-science related, went from being popular, to very popular, to surpassing “Two and a Half Men” as a complete ratings juggernaut. Licensing fees for the show have shot to $4 Million per episode, which means that CBS would be smart to keep the show on the air for a very long time.

2010 was a big year for the show, in terms of ratings, syndication rights, and also awards, as cast member Jim Parsons took home an Emmy for his work on the sitcom. Aspiring writers take note: nerds aren’t going anywhere. Be prepared to slap a pair of glasses on your leading man. You’ll thank me later. (Deadline)

The series, about a down on his luck single dad with a crazy family raising a baby who is the product of a one night stand he had with a woman who was executed on death row (don’t worry, she totally deserved it), has taken a rather high concept and run with it quite nicely. Audiences seem to agree, as “Hope” is the number one new series of this past season among viewers under 35, partially thanks to the fact that its lead-in is ratings juggernaut and drama kid bait”Glee“. The series debuted this fall, paired with the equally high concept and name-of-character-in-titled “Running Wilde“, starring Will Arnett, which failed to garner the same positive reviews or ratings. Creator Greg Garcia‘s previous show, “My Name Is Earl”, ran for four full seasons and drew to a close in 2009.

Fox is developing a sitcom based off Weekly World News. No word yet when they plan to abruptly cancel it.

You might find this one hard to believe, but Fox is developing a sitcom based upon the no-longer-in-print tabloid Weekly World News. Those two dudes from “Best Week Ever,” John Aboud and Michael Coulton are on-board to translate the imagined newsroom into a show. Think of it like “X-Files” meets “Mary Tyler Moore,” with appearances by aliens, Dick Cheney robots, old Elvis, wolf people, and, of course, Bat Boy. We speculated what Weekly World News properties we’d be likely to see back when it was announced that the paper had gone Hollywood, but a sitcom never occurred to us. But, if “Outsourced” can get on the air, I guess anything’s possible.

No word yet when Fox plans to abruptly cancel the series. (Variety)

Then you're gonna love the new sitcom, "Outsourced," which premieres on NBC this fall.Based on the 2006 romantic comedy by the same name, the show follows the exploits of an American manager, played by Ben Rappaport, who is put in charge of a recently outsourced call center in India. According to Deadline Hollywood, the show is billed as “the Midwest meets the exotic East in a hilarious culture clash.”Wait, someone from the Midwest traveling abroad? Outrageous!I haven't been this psyched about a fish-out-of-water cultural comedy since a certain street-smart jive-talking American teamed up with a lovable Engrish-speaking Asian to bring down an international conspiracy. Of course, I'm taking about Brett Ratner's The Killing Fields.
