If you were waiting and hoping for a reunion of Nick Frost and Simon Pegg‘s characters from Shaun of the Dead, or any of the other Cornetto trilogy films, you’re in luck. Sort of. Maybe. The duo will be revisiting those characters on Phineas and Ferb, a Disney Channel cartoon that is pegged at kids about 12 and under.

So…why?

Two reasons: Phineas and Ferb is likely trying to pander to adults, namely parents of the viewing children with this stunt, and b) because Simon Pegg has appeared on it before, stepping up as C-3PO on its Star Wars special. Any show that has a Star Wars special is likely to have some crossover appeal to Simon Pegg fans, especially in light of recent rumors.

And if you’re unfamiliar with Phineas and Ferb (If you’re reading this site, you likely are), it’s an animated show about two stepbrothers who partake in adventures in their backyard. Hmm. Ok.

In case you haven’t heard, J.J. Abrams is directing the new Star Wars film. Also in case you haven’t heard, J.J. Abrams likes to use the same actors in different films. So at Comic-Con, when Benedict Cumberbatch (who starred alongside Pegg in Abrams’ Star Trek into Darkness) mentioned that Simon Pegg is among the unannounced cast in the next Star Wars, no one was too taken aback.

In short order, Pegg was asked about his participation by Vulture, and his answer was non-committal enough that he’s almost certainly doing it. When asked, Pegg responded:

“Well, J.J. uses me in different roles, and we’re good friends. I feel like my face in Star Wars would pop people out of the movie. Look, I love Star Wars, and I don’t want people to watch and go, Oh, there’s Simon Pegg’s face. The film is cleverly cast with these amazing, unknown actors.”

Jeez, Simon. We get it. You’re going to be in it, but your face isn’t. HE’S THE NEW C-3PO!

Warning! Spoiler Alert!

There’s a lot a competition for best zombie movie. Some might say the best was the racially tinged horror classic, Night of the Living Dead. They wouldn’t be far off the mark. If you’re a sixteen-year-old girl you might say it’s Warm Bodies. If you’re a bro obsessed with Bill Murray, you might go with Zombieland as your fave. Mine, and frankly the best, is Shaun of the Dead. I love Simon Pegg. In his down time from acting in blockbuster behemoths he’s always crafting together a brilliant gem close to his, and our, nerdy heart. These gems are invariable entertaining: Hot Fuzz, The World’s End, Paul—all great, but none are as brilliant as Shaun of the Dead.

A hapless dote with a shite job and a lovable slob for a best friend realize they have to save their loved ones when the zombies attack. Such a simple premise. It’s those simple premises in the hands of brilliant writers that always turn out for the best. For instance, a newly wedded couple moves into the Dakota and gives birth to the Antichrist? Done and done, Rosemary’s Baby was a hit novel, a classic horror film, and even an upcoming miniseries staring Zoe Saldana. Simple premises lead to esteemed legacies. And Simon Pegg is on his way.

Zombie movies rise several times a year, always reminding us that the dead are never really gone and  that what our true natures are brutal and savage. It’s the vanquishing of the zombies, the chopping off of their heads or the burning of their rotting bodies, that reassures us that we may might just hold off the end times (that horrid moment when we devour each other) just a little longer. The human race demands an endgame, and zombie narratives (along with comets, disease epidemics, and natural disasters) are our favorite art form in which to experiment with the our own demise. And it’s the most personal. We can’t fight comets. We can try to fight aliens. We can’t see diseases, but just ask Brad Pitt what happens when the disease turns people into zombies. We can seek shelter when the tsunamis, earthquakes, and storms come, but look how well that went for the dinosaurs. A zombie apocalypse is personal because it’s us. How do we fight ourselves when we’ve suddenly become a danger to each other? I mean, besides with a cricket bat.

Taking this theme and concept to a British suburb, Shaun of the Dead is characteristic of many zombie narratives in that it uses the undead invasion as a prism in which to see Shaun’s closest, interpersonal relationships: the girlfriend he is doomed to disappoint, the loser friend he should have ditched years ago, and the mom and stepdad for whom he’ll never be good enough. While essentially a loser in the beginning of the film, he becomes the leader of his kith and kin’s survival party, showing us through humor and heart that it might just take the most dire of circumstances to reveal one’s heroic nature. This heroic nature is tester (spoiler alert) in the movie’s greatest moment in which his mother becomes a zombie and he must kill her. It’s a heart-wrenching moment tucked exquisitely among the action and humor.

And speaking of humor, we can’t forget that Shaun of the Dead is simply funny as hell. A feast for the observant nerd, the film is typical of other Simon Pegg vehicles in that subtle jokes are paid off hours later, delightfully telling details are thrown in for those watching close enough, and references to B-plots and other narratives are scattered among the bloody river of English Wit. It’s generally difficult to translate British humor into American lexicon, so I get it if some don’t find this movie as entertaining as I do. It might help to know that instead of saying a phone line is “busy” the Brits say “engaged.” It may help to also know that a common nickname for men called David is “Davs”, pronounced like “calves.” That said, most of the jokes work just fine, and what starts as a series of awkward situations slowly turns into hilarious, action-packed romp.

Actors to watch out for. Shaun’s mom? Yup, that’s Penelope Wilton, more commonly known as Mrs. Crawly, Mathew’s mother on Downton Abbey. When Shaun’s crew meets their counterparts in the alleyway? Yup, that’s Martin Freeman, before he became Dr. Watson and Bilbo Baggins, as Shaun’s doppelgänger. And be sure not to miss a sutble Bill Nighy as Shaun’s stepfather.

Though J.J. Abrams has moved on to greener, more Star Wars-ier pastures, that doesn’t mean the band is breaking up. News came from Pegg himself that he will reprise his role as Benji Dunn, the lighter side of the franchise.

While not shocking news, it was certainly a question with a proposed Tintin sequel and BFF Edgar Wright‘s upcoming Ant-Man blockbuster. It’s nice to see that Pegg will balance out the black hole of seriousness and candor that Tom Cruise brings to most everything he does (when he’s not being ridiculous and/or hilarious).

Filming starts in February, so expect an appearance in theaters in good ole’ 2015.

What scene? A scene on Klingon with Kirk, John Harrison, and Uhuru. None of that means anything to me, but maybe it will to you. Note the conspicuous absence of Mr. Pegg. COULD THERE BE TROUBLE IN PARADISE BETWEEN THE LONGTIME FRIENDS?

Nah. They seem pretty chill.

The film has already opened in Europe, and hits US theaters next week, so you’ll have to writhe around until then to see what all the fuss is about. You can do it. I know you can.

All Simon Pegg wants to do is complete the Golden Mile. The epic pub crawl he and his friends failed to finish decades earlier consists of twelve pubs in the same town, the last of which is “The World’s End.” However, there’s a new obstacle in their way.Frickin’ body snatchers.

With The World’s End, Edgar Wright, Pegg, and Nick Frost complete the Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy they began with Shaun of the Dead and continued with Hot Fuzz. Up until this point, the plot was tightly under wraps with no mention of skin-walking alien invaders, which now just makes the film all the more awesome. And again with the fences.

*exhales*

I’m sorry. It’s just that I get so frustrated when people don’t respect the boundaries of these two universes. It’s anarchy. After J.J. Abrams was announced to take on the next Star Wars film, it was just a matter of time before people looked to that film and beyond to fill their need for inane fanboy rumors.

Enter Simon Pegg. The Shaun of the Dead star has crossed over in supporting roles to a couple huge films, both in Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol and the rebooted Star Trek.

The outcry for him to also join is a little on the nose, considering the subject matter and Abrams’ involvement, but maybe we could give toss him a bone and have him play Chewbacca. A short, slacker Chewbacca.

In the film, Pegg and Frost join Martin Freeman, Paddy Considine, and Eddie Marsan as a group of old friends reuniting for an epic pub crawl. However, they’ve inconveniently scheduled it the same night as armageddon. Check out the poster below and let me know what you think. It would appear from this trailer that the new Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol trailer is nothing but action. And the phrase “Your mission, should you choose to accept it.” It would appear that Ethan and the rest of the IMF gang have been disavowed and ar fighting to restore their reputations. (Again. Are they never not disavowed? They have the flakiest employer.)

Anyway, as Brad Bird knows, the best way to restore a reputation these days is to kick lots of people in the chest. So by the looks of this trailer, the IMF team should be back in high regard in no time at all.

Simon Pegg had dinner with a group of online journalists to promote the August DVD release of Paul. We’ll have more on Paul later, but Pegg shared a few tidbits about his next collaboration with Edgar Wright, The Adventures of Tintin, and Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol. As for Star Trek 2, he just reiterated what we’ve all been hearing –  that they’re aiming for a fall shoot.

A World’s End

The long awaited end of the trilogy begun with Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz might not be a genre movie at all. “One thing Edgar and me have discussed, we’ve been away for a weekend and got things going, is that we’re not going to just do what we’ve done before,” Pegg said. “Even though we want this film to be like Shaun of the Dead times Hot Fuzz, we’re not the genre guys. I think people want to figure us out and they want to know who we are. That’s not it. So we’re not going to do okay, let’s do cowboys next. What Edgar and I are trying to do is fit in some writing time before I start Star Trek.”

The Adventures of Tintin

‘The Adventures of Tintin’ Teaser Has A Whole Mess Of Danger

Trailers for Tintin have come out and most audiences are still confused. It’s motion capture, it’s Belgian, but having played a character in it, Pegg says it’s all quite noticeably a Steven Spielberg movie.

“Yes, because you can feel his DNA in the way that it moves. I’ve seen some of it. Motion capture is more like directing live action because you are dealing with a 3D environment. You’re moving the camera around a 3D environment, but that 3D environment is digital. It’s not real. All the way that the camera moves, it’s Steven and you definitely feel that.”

Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol

Suffice it to stay, Pegg has a bigger part in the sequel to Mission: Impossible III. “I had two days on Mission: Impossible III. That was it. I did seven months on the fourth one so yeah, I go back.”

Rumor has it Jeremy Renner is positioned to take over the franchise from Tom Cruise, but Pegg says it’s ambiguous. “It has been bandied around. Looking at the film as it is, I don’t think so. It’s anyone’s guess really. It certainly sets up a new IMF agent who can return and who is an Ethan level player. We’ll see. I honestly don’t know. It’s one of those things that there’s a lot of life in that story because it is a kind of Bond thing that you can just have iterations of different adventures and different teams and stuff. I can’t say really. I don’t want to give anything away. It’s another Mission: Impossible but it’s an evolution I think. There’s some great character stuff in it. There’s some incredible action.”

On the photos of Tom Cruise scaling the Burj Khalifa in Dubai:

Pegg got an even better view of that stunt. “He leapt out the window of the tallest building in the world and looked back in at all of us, this huge sh*t eating grin on his face. The guy’s a machine. It’s insane. He was like running like a spider along the side of the Burj Khalifa. I’m glad that was seen because I wouldn’t want anyone to watch the movie and not know he did that because he did do that. I was just feeling sick saying that. What are you doing you crazy bastard? Yeah, it’s going to be good.”

Pauls

‘Paul’ Looks Like A Kids Film With Lots Of F-Bombs

Pegg and Nick Frost actually have an idea for a sequel to Paul too. Like that other classic alien franchise, the sequel will just be plural. “Nick and I have this idea that we had out on the way to Area 51 that was really funny. It was like oh, this could be great. It would cost an absolute fucking fortune. If it involved more than on Paul, it would mean that we’d have to have twice that budget again. The idea was it was called Pauls. Again, it was like From Dusk Til Shaun, that title is so good we have to make that film.”

A big motivation for Pegg to do another Paul was he’d like to recreate the experience of traveling the country and working with American comedians in supporting roles. He promises he’ll still write a good script though. “I do have enough principles to stop me doing that just for the sake of it. It would have to be a good idea, but I’ve just been thinking about that recently. You ask yourself why you do what you do. It’s not for the reward. It’s for the experience, not the product.”

I’d love to have been a fly on the wall when Adam McKay told Russell Crowe that he wanted to cast him as a hyper-violent, angry guy. I really hope that Funny Or Die was around with a hidden camera to capture the ensuing carnage.

Despite the risk of being beaten about the head and neck, McKay has approached Crowe to play the lead role of Billy Butcher in The Boys. Based on the Garth Ennis graphic novel series, the story follows a secret CIA team that monitors and punishes hard partying, out-of-control superheroes. Crowe does seem interested but wants to wait until the first draft of the script is handed in. Then he’ll be ready to give notes on how to properly shatter someone’s face by hitting them with nothing more than their own forehead. (MTV)

Paul is like all those comedies I used to like, the kind where they were just plain good. They had a little of everything and just worked. That makes it harder to write about since there’s no hook except overall solid work, but I’m up to the task.

Graeme (Simon Pegg) and Clive (Nick Frost) are Brits visiting Comic-Con. On the road to Area 51, they meet an actual alien Paul (Seth Rogen). Paul needs their help but won’t tell them much at first. At an RV park, they pick up Ruth Buggs (Kristen Wiig), a devout Catholic who experiences an awakening when she witnesses the existence of Paul. Agents Zoil (Jason Bateman), O’Reilly (Joe Lo Truglio) and Haggard (Bill Hader) are on their tail.

Pegg and Frost, who wrote the script, deliver on all the sci-fi, comic book and general movie references you’d hope for. You’ll hear familiar music, lines of dialogue and even a reference to spoilers themselves, incorporated seamlessly into the narrative. Try to catch the obscure Capturing the Friedmans joke. It’s not all mainstream. Clive and Graeme also recreate some familiar action moments that I just know Frost and Pegg were saving since Hot Fuzz (the age old “grab my hand” bit.)

It’s not ALL sci-fi, so there’s plenty to amuse general audiences, although it never sells out the target audience for a mainstream laugh. They do sex jokes, drugs jokes and some good old fashioned immaturity, mooning through windshields and swearing creatively. I love the running gags. Whenever a joke happens more than once, it’s instantly funnier to me.

Paul is a great character. He’s the everyman alien so he gets indignant about alien clichés, and he has base needs like anyone. The CGI looks real and interactive with the scene and characters. It never feels like they had to construct a scene to fit the effect. Clive and Graeme are delightful, childish foreigners and Ruth has a sweet arc in between Wiig-y profanity outbursts, which are also awesome.

Like the classic comedies, there’s a bit of depth with Paul confronting Ruth’s creationist beliefs. Paul actually heals Ruth, which is sweet considering at that point in the story he hates her. Is it predictable? Yes, in that I knew where the story was going, but I’d also call that paying off. Most importantly, it’s all funny.

Simon Pegg and Nick Frost might be afflicted with the opposite of whatever Samson had, as this trailer suggests that their long hair totally kills their comedic strength. The cast alone should make Paul can’t-miss funny, with Jason Bateman, Seth Rogen, Kristen Wiig, and Bill Hader all in supporting roles.

Instead, we are left what appears to be something of a generic children’s romp save for the gratuitous use of f-bombs. Also, if they referenced the alien’s genitals one more time, they would have to call the movie Paul’s Balls, which would just be horrible. Unless we’re missing a big component of the film (which I doubt, considering this is the third trailer), this will be a big step backwards for Pegg, Frost, director Greg Mottola, and possibly the comedy films in general. Just kidding about that last one, but this film doesn’t look great. (IGN)

The horrors start at 4:30.

Couch jumping and Scientology proselytizing were just warning signs for worse things to come. In this Annie Awards acceptance speech for super-awesomeness in animation, things suddenly get not-awesome for director Brad Bird (The Incredibles, The Iron Giant). First, he retires from animation, then we see Tom Cruise and Simon Pegg holding him hostage, and– wait, Simon Pegg isn’t crazy. Oh, this is just a goofaround.

It’ll be interesting to see what the animation genius has in store for us with the live action Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol this September. The title sounds like a poorly-translated anime, and with producer J.J. Abrams, director Brad Bird and comedian Simon Pegg on board, this project could be a wonderful geek tornado. Just stay away from Tom Cruise’s thetan cleansing machine, Mr. Bird. Unless you want to spend all your Ratatouille money on repairing the roof of the Celebrity Center. (/Film via Vulture)

We’ve got some new clips from Team Hot Fuzz‘s upcoming film Paul (courtesy of British sites Empire and Sky). Simon Pegg and Nick Frost never fail to disappoint, though I have to admit, I’ve had my doubts about this project. No Edgar Wright directing, an alien that’s just Seth Rogen as an alien (they could have slapped some antennae on him and saved a space ton of CG money) and a big part for Kristen Wiig, the SNL cast member who I’ve fast-forwarded past so many times, my TiVO does it for me now.

However, in these clips, I can see the elements working together nicely. Comic-Con, secret government alien (?) weed, girl-on-robot sex: these are the topics that all movies should discuss. Plus director Greg Mottola shot Superbad, which I continue to McLovin, despite how dated that reference has already become.

Paul will beam you into theaters March 18. (JoBlo)

A handful of rather high profile films have been added to the lineup of March’s South by Southwest film festival, including Greg Mottola‘s Paul, Jodie Foster‘s The Beaver, and a new documentary about the most persevering redhead in late night TV, entitled Conan O’Brien Can’t Stop. The O’Brien doc and The Beaver will be enjoying their world premieres at the festival, while Greg Mottola’s Paul will have its North American premiere there.

All three films are highly anticipated, but for vastly different reasons. Paul, a road comedy about two men and an alien(!), is the third film starring and written by the Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz duo, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, who spin genre comedy into nerd gold. Foster’s The Beaver is the tale of a seriously disturbed man who connects with his loved ones using a beaver hand puppet, and he’s played by notoriously disturbed man Mel Gibson. The O’Brien doc should excite audiences with a behind the scenes look at the struggles of the talk show host you love to root for.

The fest kicks off March 11th and runs through the 19th. Opening starts with Duncan JonesSource Code, a thriller starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Michelle Monaghan. (The Playlist)

I am a little concerned about Seth Rogen though. I heard he was trying to slim down but I think he’s gone too far. His skin is all pale, and his eyes are so bugged out. Not to mention the total lack of body hair. I’m afraid that whatever crash diet he subjected himself to, just wasn’t the healthiest route to go. And all for what? To see his name up in lights?? Sadly, another victim of the Fame Monster.

A new trailer for Paul, starring Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and Seth Rogen has hit the Internet.

The comedy tells the story of two UFO nuts who happen upon a stranded alien while traveling to Area 51. The pair decide to help the creature rather than turn him over to the authorities. Normally, a character that is completely CGI comes off as kind of corny, with a few obvious exceptions (LOTR, Avatar, etc.). But for Paul, it might actually add to the laughs.

I myself once picked up an alien trying to get back to its far away home world of “Guatemala.” But I was afraid it was going to lay eggs in my stomach, so I tried to beat it to death with a rake. It got away, but not before I taught it a valuable lesson about the resilience of mankind. Also, the cops came. (First Showing)

As this teaser for Paul will show you, the pair play nuuurrrdddssss who encounter an alien outside of Area 51. Not much comedy is shown in this teaser and I need to applaud Greg Mottola's restraint in not having the alien play air guitar or perform a Black Eyed Peas song. Because that's the constant temptation and danger with working with CGI characters. Before you even realize it, you've veered into Alvin and the Chipmunks territory. The story is based on the true story of Irish serial killers in Edinburgh, Scotland who murder their victims to then sell them as medical cadavers. The trailer cites the desire to save enough money to bang Isla Fisher as the motive behind the slayings. I can't imagine a court where that defense wouldn't hold up.
