Sigourney Weaver (alternate pronunciation: Siganorey Weaver) is fearful that shooting Avatar 2, 3, and 4 back-to-back will kill her. For real this time and not in the mystical cat person way. Speaking of which, Weaver’s character died in the original but is returning for all of the sequels. Without getting into the details Weaver hinted that her character will transform in each sequel. “It will be challenging for me. I can’t talk about it, but my part is a little different in each one,” she teased. “I’ll transform somewhat.”

That sounds hokey. Here’s hoping that by the end she transforms into a fart and floats away. (NY Mag)

Someone didn’t learn the lesson of diminishing marginal returns from the Wachowski Brothers and their ill-fated Matrix sequels.

And that someone is James Cameron.

Sigourney Weaver, who has worked with Cameron on Aliens, has said that she’s signing on to appear in all three of them, but she has no idea what the story is. In her own words, “I just show up.”

What a professional.

Cameron has hinted at “non-linear storytelling” and time travel in the sequels, which doesn’t make me cringe as much as I thought it would, because as ridiculous as JC is, he’s always proven capable of telling a story in a thoughtful, clear fashion, even if those stories are sometimes silly as all get-out.

It’s no surprise that these things are filming all at once, given that they’re such an undertaking, but the sheer number of Avatar films on the horizon sorta makes my stomach turn.

Here’s to hoping maybe one of them is a Dan Harmon-helmed claymation version with the cast of Community.

Oh. Wait. Shit.

If you aren’t crying with joy and squealing while watching this trailer for Taylor Lautner‘s Abduction, they will kick you out of Team Jacob. I assume for most Screen Junkies readers, that would be heartbreaking.

Twilight‘s Lautner stars in Abduction, directed by John Singleton, about high school kid who finds out that his parents aren’t really his parents, and then explosions. Suddenly, Lautner is getting tracked down by secret agents and other bad guys who cannot be trusted. But who can be trusted, you guys? All I know is, I hope I never discover that my parents are fakes, so I won’t have to jump off buildings and dodge gunfire. I assume that’s standard protocol.

I do like the company Lautner’s keeping these days, with hot Lily Collins by his side and forever classy Sigourney Weaver to watch his back. Maybe his parents are aliens? Those bitches.

If you were one of the several people who saw Buried last year, you’re probably looking forward to Rodrigo Cortes’ next movie, the supernatural thriller Red Lights, starring Elizabeth Olsen, Robert De Niro, Cillian Murphy, and Sigourney Weaver. In it, De Niro plays a famous psychic, which explains why in this picture it looks like he’s standing on a stage of some kind. Perhaps the sunglasses are to hide his third eye? I don’t know how psychics work.

I love Buried, so I’m pretty excited about this, even though the plot synopsis from star Elizabeth Olsen makes it seem more conventional than that:

“Robert [De Niro] plays a world renowned psychic and Sigourney is a psychology professor, and I play her student… Cillian Murphy is my love interest, though that’s not a huge part of the story.”

You can see the larger picture down below. You can also print it out and take it to the mall so you can get a pair of sunglasses just like De Niro has. That’s what I’m going to do, anyway. (via /Film)

Elizabeth Olsen is currently getting great notices for her performance in the one-shot-only thriller Silent House at Sundance. Now it appears she’s starting to get some work thanks to her performance as well. She’s just been announced as joining Robert De Niro, Cillian Murphy, and Sigourney Weaver of Buried-director Rodrigo Cortés‘ thriller Red Light. The story is about “a psychologist (Weaver) and her assistant (Olsen) whose study of paranormal activity leads them to investigate a world-renowned psychic (De Niro).” Creepy — almost as creepy as living with the Olsen twi–ugh, never mind. The article points out that the role is a good fit for Olsen because she is currently studying psychology at NYU. Hey, I studied psychology too, can I play a psychologist’s assistant in a movie? Note: I’m not related to the Olsen twins.

Buried is one of my favorite movies of last year so I’m definitely excited to what see Cortés does next, lost Olsen triplet or no. (Collider)

There’s a lot of talk now about the new Alien-ish movie. However, if you owned the classic Nintendo in the 80s and love Aliens, your jaw will drop at this game project that got lost in space.

In 1987, Japanese game publisher Square, who later created the RPG series Final Fantasy, which we’re sure has inspired more than one chocobo furry sex orgy at Dragon*Con, got the license to make an Aliens game. Unfortunately, the game was never released on the NES, only on the Japanese Famicom Disk System.

The recently rediscovered game is documented in the video above from 1up. It shows us what we’ve all been missing. The biggest thing, in my opinion, is the super-sexy Sigourney Weaver sprite. She has ducked and float-leaped into my heart. If the 8-bit version of Ripley came into my bedroom wearing a pink jump suit and big boots, brandishing a laser gun, I wouldn’t turn her down. Maybe that’s partly because of my fear of laser guns, but still. 5-year-old me would have declared 8-bit Ripley his girlfriend, and once again, nobody would talk to me at recess. (1up)

We know Ripley can’t be in the Alien prequel Ridley Scott is directing, but there may be a way for Sigourney Weaver to lend a hand. While promoting the Blu Ray release of the Alien saga and Avatar, Weaver gave her opinions on the Alien prequel.

“Certainly not as an actor but if they needed help with the story, I could probably help them,” Weaver said. “I have a good sense of what people appreciate in the series and what they don’t care about. So I hope they’ll ask me.”

More after the jump…

If we have anything to do with it, and we don’t, we’d suggest Scott ask her. I mean, this is the story of what leads up to Ripley’s four adventures. As for the casting rumorsCarey Mulligan, Natalie Portman, Noomi Rapace – Weaver’s confident there’s no replacing Ripley.

“I think it’s a tricky thing because you want to get a good young actress in there but she should be very different from Ripley. But I would trust Ridley. I mean, he found me. I think that it’s an important decision. As with all of these Alien films it’s an ensemble film, so it’s very important who you pick for all the parts I think.”

The other scandal in Alien-land is that it seems Fox wants to make a PG-13 movie. That might sound like a terrible idea for a story about monsters that burst from people’s chests and spray them with acid, but Weaver has a way of calming us down.

“I think unfortunately, because movies have changed so much and gotten so much gorier, that nowadays probably Alien would be PG-13 because there wasn’t much blood in it. Except for the swearing, I don’t know. It’s tricky. That’s a good question.”

Every time the Alien series comes out again on DVD, or now Blu Ray, we always focus on Alien and Aliens. We kind of know everything there is to know about the classics. Wouldn’t it be interesting to really find out what went wrong with Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection?

More after the jump…

Now that the Blu Ray set is coming out, Sigourney Weaver is talking about Alien 3 specifically. “Every day we’d shoot all day and then at midnight David [Fincher] would have to get on the phone and defend shooting the next day’s work,” she said. “You shouldn’t hire someone like Fincher unless you’re going to let them go. So I think it was very difficult for him, really difficult for everybody. Yet I think the film is really good what he did. It was a very specific vision that Fox wanted him to do. It was not his take on it which I think made it more complicated for him, but it made a difficult film that much more difficult certainly. Certainly whatever issues were there were complicated by the distance and the time change. It was hard to have a coherent conversation in those circumstances. I thought Fincher was amazing. I think that with Social Network, everybody now is going to be able to recognize Fincher for being one of the great directors of our day. Certainly that was true after Fight Club, etc.”

If Alien 3 had problems, people hate on Alien Resurrection a lot more. Maybe it’s worth a second look. “I really enjoyed a lot of Alien Resurrection. I thought that the scientists were really wonderful and the company was more detestable than ever. As we become more and more of a corporate planet, I think that the lessons from Alien have not really been paid attention to. I think it got harder for Jean-Pierre [Jeunet]. The story is much more about the science and about the corporations. I think it’s difficult for us to watch the fourth one because it seems like yesterday or tomorrow. It’s not happening far away. It seems like something we read about in the papers, cloning or BP and all this stuff. So I think it makes people more uncomfortable but I think they all really stand up. I’ve heard people arguing over their favorites and three and four have a lot of fans.”

Now that Ridley Scott is making his Alien prequel, he’s revealed that he was never asked to do a sequel. He kind of seems bitter about it, but Weaver assured he never got screwed out of anything.

“Well, you know, what happened was they never set out to make a sequel. Jim Cameron wrote Aliens on spec. He was being interviewed by our producers for something else and he said, ‘I’ve written this script of Aliens. Would you read it?” They hadn’t even thought about doing it. So it was his baby from the beginning and he did such an amazing job. It would have been fun to go back to Ridley to do another one but in those days, you didn’t do sequels. He was busy doing whatever he was doing.”

The Alien Anthology, with behind the scenes features, interviews and screen tests, comes out October 26.

You Again might not be a Screen Junkies type of movie, but Sigourney Weaver will always be a SJ type of lady. If the Disney comedy is the excuse to sit in a hotel room with Ripley, I’ll take it. She had her shoes kicked off and offered a drink, but I wasn’t there to drink. I was there to pick Sigourney Weaver’s brain.

Briefly, in You Again, Sigourney plays Ramona, the ol high school nemesis of Jamie Lee Curtis, who’s the mom of Kristen Bell, whose high school nemesis is marrying her brother, and Ramona is the mean girl’s aunt too. I only used that confusing set up to give my interview some context. By now the news about Avatar 2 and Ghostbusters III came out from her press conference, but there’s still more about her Alien thoughts and undead turn in Vamps.

Screen Junkies: As I was waiting, I heard you tell the last reporter how you get scared by movies. You’re who we think of as the ultimate monster fighter.

Sigourney Weaver: Acting! I know. I think I can fight a monster but some of these other kinds of movies are scary. Like The Hills Have Eyes, that’s the kind of movie I don’t like to see.

SJ: They’re mutants. That’s sort of monsters.

SW: I know. A good monster movie is always fun to watch but when humans are monsters I think that’s harder to watch.

SJ: You often take male characters and turn them into women. Was this originally written as an uncle and you said, “No, I’m Sigourney Weaver and this is going to be an aunt.”?

SW: No, I don’t think so. Even though men and women everywhere have their high school horror stories, I think this was conceived very much as three generations of women trying to make amends and move on with their lives.

SJ: There’s a line in the film where the kid brother says you look like a computer-generated image. Did that have special meaning to you afte Avatar?

SW: Well, I put in, “Thank you.” I think in the script she was supposed to look a little horrified but I thought, “That’s exactly what Ramona wants.” But it’s true. This was before Avatar had come out but it’s funny. When I’m in a comedy, I don’t remember all the other things I’ve done. When I’m in a sci-fi movie, I don’t remember all [the others]. Every movie becomes like IT.

SJ: You’ve been in a lot of comedies but only a few where you’re one of the funny characters. In Dave and Ghostbusters you’re still the straight man.

SW: I know. I’m working on that. Even though I always did comedy, that’s really where I feel most at home, so before Alien I was always doing comedy on stage. I think comedies are harder to find, good comedies, so it’s just taken a while. I just jump at them every time I get a chance.

SJ: It must be an extra big year for you with Avatar and Ridley Scott going back to Alien. Have you had conversations with him about the prequel?

SW: What I suggested to him a long time ago is really to me it’s going back to the planet where The Space Jockey came from and maybe where the alien came from. I hope he’s doing that but I don’t actually know.

SJ: That is what he’s doing. Was that your idea?

SW: When we talked about doing another Alien, I said the story is that. So that was my opinion. I’m not saying he took the idea from me but since he came up with The Space Jockey, it makes sense to me that he would want the same thing.

SJ: So between that and Ghostbusters III, all your classics are back.

SW: Yeah, that’s true. That’s a nice way of looking at it. I know, being reinvented, that sounds good.

SJ: You’re also in Paul with Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. Do you have a funny cameo?

SW: I do. It’s just a delicious movie. I just loved that script. It’s so witty, it’s so touching, it’s so crazy and I just think it’s going to be an awesome movie.

SJ: Simon and Nick are doing their take on sci-fi. Do they have some fun with you and your legacy?

SW: I think they do. It’s not a huge part but the whole script is just a love letter to Comic-Con and to the geek in all of us. It’s just a movie that’s filled with heart. We actually were shooting at the Disney lot tonight. We have to do a little pickup scene.

SJ: And you’re playing a vampire?

SW:I am, I play this terrible vampire with Amy Heckerling. Really, she’s someone you want to put a stake through her but I’m trying to make her [memorable]. First of all, there’s something very bittersweet about being a vampire I think, if you’re really an old vampire. Who would want to be around for 100s and 100s and 100s of years? It’d be hard but anyway it’s a comedy and it’s a big flashy role and I’m delighted.

SJ: Everything we see now is young vampires. Even though they’ve lived 100s of years but they look like teenagers.

SW: I’m afraid I’m going to look my age. She thinks she’s young. She thinks that she’s hot to trot but luckily she can’t ever see herself in a mirror.

SJ: Does that make it a new take for this era, to actually show a vampire aged? I don’t think Dracula was ever a teenager.

SW: No, and actually the tradition, because I’ve been watching a lot of old vampire movies, first of all vampires are so elegant, but it is all this youth, blood, all that stuff is very different but there have always been older vampires. In “True Blood” they’re all really young but I think in other movies they’ve been played by character actors and what have you so I’m looking forward to it. As a young friend of mine said, the daughter of a friend of mine, she said, “Oh, Sigourney’s playing a vampire. Oh, everything sucks.”

SJ: Are you doing another action movie?

SW: I am. I’m doing an action movie in Spain and that’ll be interesting to work overseas. I haven’t worked overseas in quite a while.

‘Avatar’ Bootleg Trailer http://www.screenjunkies.com/video/avatar-bootleg-trailer/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/video/avatar-bootleg-trailer/#comments Wed, 30 Nov -0001 00:00:00 +0000 Sorry for the crappy bootleg version, but it's the best quality that exists online right now. You'll have to go to the theaters this weekend to see a better version of this three-minute Cliff's Notes epic on the big screen. Then... AND ONLY THEN... can we fairly judge the film's entire worth.
