Sorry, ensemble superhero films. You’re just no match for proven family franchises. Little kids will watch anything they’re supposed to, and watch it A LOT. And the studio behind Shrek knows this.

So, it should comes as no surprise that after three sequels of diminishing quality, the last in 2010, Shrek will be making a return to save DreamWorks corporate earnings from the wrath of evil king originality. DreamWorks CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg reported to Fox Business (our favorite cinematic journalism outlet), “I think you can be confident that we’ll have another chapter in the Shrek series. We’re not finished, and more importantly, neither is he.”

“SHREK IS NOT FINISHED,” the headline should have read.

After winning the inaugural Oscar for best animated feature in 2001, the Shrek series got a little too comfortable for its own good taking its meta approach to fairy tales a little too far for the sake of gross-out humor and the familiar.

But it’s not like that’s ever stopped anyone from making a sequel.

7 Greatest Animated Sequels http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-lists/7-greatest-animated-sequels/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-lists/7-greatest-animated-sequels/#comments Mon, 01 Jul 2013 18:07:22 +0000 Penn Collins http://www.screenjunkies.com/?p=255566 Welcome back to their worlds.

With Despicable Me 2’s release on July 3, we have cause to look back on animated film franchises to see which properties were able to step up their game in subsequent sequels, and keep the momentum going. Sequels can often serve as creative ruts or voids for promising originals, so while we’re not going so far as to handicap these sophomore efforts, we will say that they managed to walk a fine line in mixing the familiar with the new.

7. Ice Age: The Meltdown

The good thing about having a terrific cast of voice actors is that it can ease the burden on the story portion of a sequel. While Ice Age 2 certainly does phone it in, the second one manages to revisit some favorite characters without becoming complacent in its familiarity. The sequel has a strong story behind it (global warming is threatening their habitat), and manages to get its point across without being heavy-handed or preachy.

No easy task when you’re carrying a political(ish) message in your animated film.

6. Shrek Ever After

By the time Shrek Ever After came around, Shrek had lost favor with the audiences, demonstrating a precipitous decline in quality after the original installment. So it was with this additional pressure that producers were forced to right the ship, and return to the fundamentals of what made Shrek great.

Rather than further develop a convoluted scenario for the fourth installment, the writers made it a story of three friends forced to prove their friendship to each other. Simple. Heartwarming.

Fans came around to the idea, and Shrek was able to end its theatrical run on a high note because of this back-to-basics approach.

5. Cars 2

While Pixar films are near-universally lauded, Cars 2 is perhaps the only film from the animation studio that suggested that the shop was capable of coasting. However…it also demonstrated that even when Pixar coasts, they’re capable of putting out some pretty memorable work.

4. An America Tail: Fievel Goes West

Though it sat outside of the Disney juggernaut during the 80’s, this Don Bluth franchise still managed to work its way into the pop culture landscape. The sequel found Fievel carrying on after being separated from his family in the first installment. Fievel Mousekewitz managed to win the hearts and minds of America, so there was little question that we would follow him west, all pioneer-style and whatnot.

3. Kung-Fu Panda 2

Any time your animated sequel can get Gary Oldman to play the villain, you’re probably going to find your way on this list. So let it be no surprise that we include Kung-Fu Panda 2 in here, as we revisit Po to find him at odds with Lord Shen, played by Oldman.

We also get to circle back up with the Furious Five, which is perhaps the strongest supporting cast to be drawn. Okay. Nemo’s in that discussion as well.

2. Toy Story 3

We’ll get into Toy Story 3’s predecessor shortly, but while the third one may not have had quite the same quality of story behind it, the emotions the incinerator scene elicits are well worth the price of admission. The team behind the film managed to put a beautiful bow on the three-story arch they developed.

1. Toy Story 2

If we were drawing feature film analogies here, then Toy Story would be The Godfather, only if The Godfather 3 had been awesome. Toy Story 2 was able to perform that rare feat in which it surpassed the acclaimed first installment in terms of quality. Toy Story 2 was able to use the groundwork laid out in the first film to further develop already-rich characters, while resisting the urge to complicate the story with plot contrivances and the like.

It was clear here that Pixar wasn’t getting after a sequel because it was easy. They were getting after a sequel because they had a story to tell.

It’s that magical time of the year again. A time to sit through sh*tty Christmas special after shitty Christmas special. Instead of filling the heart with holiday cheer, these read more as long toy commercials, blatant cash grabs, or chilling reminders of our own mortality. This is totally redundant. I don’t need any help getting depressed around the holidays. The holidays usually just take care of that themselves. But thanks for the assist, Alvin and the Chipmunks.

Outlined below are seven of the all time worst Christmas specials the networks have ever crammed down our chimneys. And, no, the Star Wars Christmas Special didn’t make the Worst Of list. It took balls to make it, and nerve like that deserves reward.

Shrek the Halls

When America screamed “No more Shrek movies!!,” the studio actually listened. However, nobody said anything about television holiday specials. Hence, Shrek the Halls. And wouldn’t you know it? All of Shrek’s attempts to pull off an awesome holiday fall flat and get screwed up by a wacky cast of fairy tale characters. Poor guy just can’t win.

A Very Brady Christmas

The Brady Family gets back together in one place for the holidays. Unfortunately, we’re invited to watch as well. It’s always awkward to share the holidays with someone else’s family, but even worse when the now grown children are neurotic messes. Jan is headed for divorce, Greg’s wife doesn’t want anything to do with him, Peter is intimidated by his bossy girlfriend and can’t get it up, Marcia married a bum, and Bobby has secretly dropped out of college. That sounds almost as bad as all the stuff that actually happened to the actors who play them.

There’s been no shortage of cinematic boogymen throughout the years. One of the most feared is Michael Myers, of the Halloween film series. While his history of bloodshed is indisputable, it has occurred to us that comic actor Mike Myers has had a reign of terror that is arguably more horrific. We took a look back at the long careers of both men to answer, once and for all, a question that has haunted us for decades. Who is more terrifying: Michael Myers or Mike Myers?

Origin:

Often the most terrifying thing about a villain is their origin story. Michael Myers began his pattern of serial killings as a six-year-old boy in the quiet town of Haddonfield, Illinois. Mike Myers, however, launched his career from the place we least expected: Canada. I’m numb with fear just thinking about it.

Point: Mike Myers

Body Count:

The easiest way to gauge horror factor is by shear number of kills. Michael Myers has this wrapped up, with an on screen body count dating back to 1978 and nearing triple digits as of 2009‘s Halloween 2 remake. But while he might lack quantity in this department, Mike Myers more than makes up for it in quality. His most famous movie kill occurred when he (off screen) murdered the Sprockets film project in 2000, dashing the hopes of Dieter fans everywhere, and destroying David Hasselhoff‘s plans to install a swimming pool with his Sprocket’s cameo check. The deaths of dozens of fictional babysitters edge this out… barely.

Point: Michael Myers

The DreamWorks Animation Shrek spin-off Puss In Boots dares to be a mainstream kids’ movie with the word “Puss” in the title. I dunno, it just looks off to me. Anyway, here’s a new teaser trailer, which opens with an homage to the Inception trailer and closes with a cat stunt-riding a horse. Why not? There’s also a new poster which you can see below. The thing that strikes me about the poster is the tagline, “Pray for Mercy.” Kind of a dark tagline for a kids’ movie, isn’t it? Maybe they’re going for a Princess Bride vibe or something. The movie, starring Antonio Banderes, is set for a November 4 release .(via ComingSoon)

The new teaser trailer for Shrek Forever After has dropped, and it showcases all the crazy characters we've come to know and love over the previous three films. The question is, will this fourth installment be as unnecessary as the last one? Probably not since anything with a green ogre in it seems to rake in sh*t buckets full of cold, hard cheddar. And this Shrek is in 3D, so Donkey or his poop will probably get flung at us or something. It appears that in Shrek Forever After, what Dreamworks is calling THE FINAL CHAPTER, we're transported to a far far away land called Far, Far Away Land where Shrek has never existed. Donkey doesn't know who he is and Puss is overweight and lazy. Tehe. Husky cats are funny.  Shrek Forever After hits theaters May 21st, 2010. Check out the teaser trailer after the jump.
