David Lynch’s abstract, awesome TV series Twin Peaks defied all conventions of network television when it became a minor sensation airing on ABC in 1990 and 1991. Its weirdness and odd performances kept it from getting good ratings, but is regarded in the pantheon of cult TV series before or since.

And after one movie that served as a prequel, Fire Walk with Me, was supposed to be part of the series, but ended up being released as a feature in 1992. Now, Showtime is bringing the series back in 2016. Details are sketchy (as they were in the first one even as it was airing), but the word is coming down via this announcement video from co-creator Mark Frost’s Twitter account.

Stand-up comedian and sometimes-actor Demetri Martin is set to join the HBO drama House of Lies in a multi-episode arc that will have him playing a partner to Don Cheadle‘s Marty. Martin will play an erratic CEO who plays by his own rules.

Of course he will. Nobody wants to see someone playing by other people’s rules. That’s boring.

Martin has starred in Moneyball, Take Me Home Tonight, The Taking of Woodstock, and served as a correspondent on The Daily Show. He’ll join another wacky comedian, Ben Schwartz, on the Showtime series. There’s no way of knowing how straight Martin will have to play his character, though he’s the rare talent that can garner more laughs the more deadpan he is.

The show is entering its fourth season sometime in 2015, which means that there will be even more lies for this house to be built upon.

After running on vapors for the past two seasons, Homeland made some major changes and has retooled itself with the new season you see before you. This time, a drone strike gone wrong casts suspicions on the new station chief and Carrie must choose between hanging out with a baby, or traveling to Pakistan where she could be shot, stabbed, blown up or kidnapped and psychically or mentally tortured at any given moment. As anyone with a newborn will tell you, it’s a tough choice.

The rebooted Homeland returns to Showtime on Sunday, October 5th.

After last year’s shakeup, which may have come a season too late for many viewers, it appears that Homeland is packing it’s bags and expatriating. In this trailer for season 4 of the Showtime hit, we see Claire Danes‘ Carrie Matheson in a foreign land, besieged by violence and self doubt, just like she was in Washington, only now with different costumes.

This trailer fits the definition of a “teaser” giving us only a (weak) acoustic song overlaid with a montage of context-free events, and some vague narration. Still, it’s nice to know the show’s making it’s way back, and hopefully it can draw from the original magic that endeared so many to the show before it went off track late in season 2 and 3.

I’m not complaining about Cameron Crowe doing a Showtime comedy about touring rock bands – it’s what he does best. But that doesn’t mean I won’t make fun of him for going back to that time-tested well again and again. And again. Then once more after that.

Crowe is on board to write and direct the pilot episode of Roadies on the premium cable network. The show will be a comedy that follows around a fictional rock band while touring through the U.S. It’s a pretty ripe premise, as Spinal Tap has demonstrated. And Crowe has proven that he can walk the line dividing reverence and ridicule very well, so let’s get excited about this.

Roadies will be an ensemble comedy, but no word on who will be starring. Fortunately, there are probably a million good choices, so let’s not just ask Patrick Fugit to join without weighing all our options.

Ever since Dexter left, America has been stumbling around with a confused look on its face, mumbling, “Where are my serial killer shows?” Or at least that’s what it’s like in my neighborhood.

Even if America is clamoring for a new serial killer show, Showtime is awfully brazen in thinking they’re the one to give it to us. The series finale of Dexter left most viewers wondering, “Zuh?” with select viewers responding with “WhattaWHAT?” and almost all clenching their teeth and muttering, “Argh.”

However, Control Alt Delete should have far different expectations, as it follows four slackers who work in an office as they drudge through the rat race, but all the while have to avoid being taken down by the office serial killer. It’s a pretty ambitious premise, but it sounds like it could be pretty funny, provided you get the Workaholics guys to step in.

Morgan Spurlock, who has been seeing diminishing returns on his documentary efforts following his work on Super-Size Me, has been picked up by Showtime to host a seven-part series on non-fictional accounts of the seven deadly sins, entitled (straightens tie) Seven Deadly Sins.

Why is this going to be on Showtime instead of the channel of the man with the enormous scrotum? I don’t know. But it’s getting a significant profile boost. Is this what Spurlock needs after doing docs on manscaping and sponsorships that fell very very flat?

Maybe, but this show doesn’t sound particularly unique or interesting. Eh, maybe Christopher Walken will appear and spice things up.

Showtime has announced that the upcoming seventh season of Californication will be its last. The series focuses on David Duchovny‘s rakish New York-transplant writer struggling with his responsibilities as a father while also sticking his thingy in every women he meets. Seriously, even women that he meets in traffic. Dude’s foreskin gets pushed back at minimum three times every time he leaves his house.

Showtime President of Entertainment David Nevins promises that the longtime show will not end with Hank Moody becoming a lumberjack. “[Series creator] Tom [Kapinos] has carefully planned the final chapter of Hank’s journey and has brought it to a beautiful and satisfying conclusion for new and long-time fans alike,” says Nevins. He did not elaborate how the network plans to show boobs going forward. Maybe Mandy Patinkin can start taking his shirt off or something. (THR)

Despite going up the same night as what may have been the most anticipated TV event in a decade, Homeland was able to improve on its season 2 premiere, with the season 3 kickoff improving 9% in live viewership, and 26% when audiences factored in other viewing methods. Further, it’s likely that even more viewers will hunker down with the show in the coming days, meaning that Homeland is kicking as strong as ever.

No plot points to be given away here, but it will be interesting to see how the audience deals with a shakeup that leaves Brody out of the first two episodes entirely, and keeps him at bay for most of the season. Of course, if you haven’t caught the episode yet, you can watch it right here, right now.

Showtime has a sort of established practice of putting up the first one or two episodes of their shows on YouTube every season. And…they did it with Homeland last night, lest you were unavailable to watch it, and forgot that DVR exists.

Nonetheless, it’s out there, it takes another surprising turn, and it looks like the dynamic between Brody and Carrie has once again been turned on his head.

I’d say more, but then what would be the point of watching this episode that Showtime was nice enough to give to us for free?

To recap, Claire Danes just took home her second Emmy for Best Actress in a Drama for her role as Crying Woman In Pantsuit, while the show itself won for Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series. Since I’m talking about the season finale of a show, there are going to be SPOILERS. Dexter went out with something less than a whimper two nights ago, causing both fans and critics to say things like “Oh, that Dexter finale was so bad, I wish I was dead,” or “Those improvement early last season on Dexter were just a fluke. The finale sucked. Pass me the hummus. ”

The show ended with sister Deb dying, Dexter abandoning his baby, and becoming a lumberjack in the woods, with an ending that seems to ignore the fact that Dexter has a pathological need to kill in his body, perhaps replacing with the satisfaction of the slow, methodical extermination of spotted owls.

What’s most amusing about the exit is that the fans seem to think that the show was doing just fine until the finale, which somehow failed to live up to the standards the show had set, when in reality, it was completely on par with this season as well as the Colin Hanks season which may have rewritten the book on bad television. Anyway: No movies, no spinoffs, no prequels. It’s done now.

We’re safe.

Ron Shelton will be taking his sports expertise (Cobb, Blue Chips, White Men Can’t Jump, Bull Durham, and The Great White Hype) and sliding over to the small screen to give Showtime an NBA drama, presumably with Hollywood actors against a green screen to make them appear tall.

It’s not known whether the show has or will have the blessing of the NBA (Why would anyone want it?), but the series will have a number of Lakers execs and insiders, including Phil Jackson (who will serve as executive producer), serving as consultants, so you know there will be some dish.

If I may make one suggestion: No NBA cameos, please. Entourage could get away with it because no one took it seriously to begin with, and Arli$$ embarrassed itself wit the parade of dumb athletes. Keep this on in its own little world and divorced from reality.

Oh, and have Dirk Nowitzki and Nate Robinson star. That’s all.

While Showtime got traction with Homeland, they’ve had a hard time shaking their dramedy roster to make the leap into honest-to-goodness drama. Both the premises and the writing on their earlier shows have made it almost impossible to get too moved by their goings on.

BUT WAIT. Enter The Affair, a show that’s not about a thirteen episode black tie dinner party, but rather marital infidelity. That’s pretty dramatic, no? Even if you don’t think it’s all that high stakes, what if the married people had kids? Lost innocence. That could raise the stakes.

What may or may not also raise the stakes is the participation of Joshua Jackson and Maura Tierney, two actors who, while solid, aren’t the types I’d burden with the responsibility of leading roles.

So the producers of The Affair went ahead and got McNulty from The Wire. That should lend some instant credibility.

Did I mention that Jackson plays a cowboy who resides on a ranch in Long Island? Because that merited mentioning a second ago when I was talking about Showtime’s difficulty in nailing certain aspects of TV drama.

Phillip Seymour Hoffman is a pretty funny guy, but historically, his funniness or “humor,” if you will, is largely derived from being creepy or weird. Which works well in a supporting role, but might be a lot to take should he step into a starring role of a weekly comedy.

That’s my theory, and Trending Down, the newest pilot to hit Showtime, will put that theory to the test. In the comedy series, Hoffman would play an advertising exec (IT’S BEEN DONE, SHOWTIME!) who loses relevance as his company gets taken over.

While the prospect of all Hoffman, all the time might be a little daunting, there’s no chance that audiences will just kind of, sort of like it. Hoffman’s presence is polarizing, and this will likely not keep the audience that PSH brings in due to his well-maintained notoriety.

If the participation of an established comedy name is what you’re looking for, Trending Down has that in Kathryn Hahn (Wanderlust, Girls, Parks and Recreation) who will be playing the female lead.

This could very well be awesome, actually.

From the look of things, Dexter‘s been getting the cold shoulder from his sister who has chosen the comforts of awesome sex and recreational drugs over eating steaks with her creepy murderer brother who wears a lot of peach. Meanwhile, everyone in Miami who is not a homicide detective are suspicious that Dexter may be the Bay Harbor Butcher making it more and more difficult for him to track down and eliminate whoever is going around town removing people’s brains.

All in all, the once creepy show looks much more palatable. By that, I mean at least they’ve scaled back on the bronzer from last season.

We’ve already been treated to a few teasers for the upcoming season of Dexter, but now that it’s confirmed to be its final, expect a much more aggressive push. So far, new footage has been kept to a minimal so in the meantime we can enjoy these stylistic recap spots which is okay, because it’s now hitting home that Dexter is ending. That means no more kill rooms, no more blood slides, no more convenient reasons to get Harrison out of town. And after this season, there will be no more Dexter teasers. We always knew Miami would run out of serial killers eventually, but now that that day is here, it feels weird.

I’m not able to presume too much here without giving away some significant season 7 spoilers, and I just invented a policy where I won’t spoil anything that happened in the previous season until the first episode of the next one airs. You know, for the sake of the Netflixers and bootleggers and procrastinators at large.

Anyway, Dexter, Deb, etc.

This is rumored to be the final season, but seeing as how last season was the first one in a while that wasn’t terrible, I wouldn’t rule out a season 9 or later.

Showtime has been pretty darn liberal with putting their streaming premieres up online, an action akin to a drug dealer giving the first hit out for free. If you haven’t gotten on board with the twisted characters of Shameless, now’s your chance.

Let’s not have William H. Macy‘s starpower go to waste, people.

Everyone likes free stuff, but some people hate illegal downloading. However, since this Californication season premiere is free, thus…

everyone must like this free episode from Showtime.

Hank Moody gets into lots of trouble, and he hilariously tries to bang his way out of it EVERY TIME. Which just makes for good television. I’mma watch it now.

Today in news that has probably been assumed since the Emmys a few weeks ago, Homeland has gotten picked up for a third season. The order is for the now-industry-standard 12 episodes, which is a number that comfort us with its familiarity. Conversely, an 11-episode pickup would have angered and confused us to such a degree that we couldn’t reasonably be held accountable for our actions. Ditto for 13 episodes.

The news comes after Sunday’s most-watched-ever episode, which garnered 1.75 million viewers, which fell just short of Dexter‘s 1.9 million that night.

The news of this renewal, while not surprising, comes as great news for fans of great television, and also Claire Danes‘ agent, who probably has been long overdue for a payday.

Last season, Dexter ended with the second most shocking cliffhanger in the show’s history.  It didn’t quite punch you in the gut like the Trinity Killer finale did, but it’s far more riveting than the time Angel seemingly ran out of toilet paper (he just ended up using his undershirt).

At long last, the new season is here and you can watch as Dexter‘s world changes forever.

In the past few seasons, Dexter has lost the quality level that defined it and made the early years so much fun to watch. But there’s hope yet for season seven. For one, the plot is likely to be more interesting because SPOILER we’ll see how Dexter reacts now that Deb is on to him and his secret life. Secondly, they used the Deftones in the trailer. That deserves our watching the first three episodes at least. They’ve earned that much.

Showtime, long the refuge of poorly-behaving female characters will get a handful more as Jodie Foster signs on to direct Angie’s Body, which, despite sounding like a 50 Shades of Grey knock-off, is actually the story of a woman who runs a crime family.

Foster will also serve to executive produce the series, which, why not, considering that title is so nebulous that I think I’m currently executive producing the new Bill and Ted movie just by sitting here and writing this article.

While Showtime series have always resided in a slightly goofier space than its big brother HBO, the addition of Foster to this fun-sounding concept raises hopes a little bit.

The best part? We‘ll finally get an answer to the question “Who is the female Silvio Dante?*”

(SCROLL DOWN FOR ANSWER)

The past couple seasons of Dexter have probably been bittersweet for the producers and stars of the show. On the one hand, the series had never enjoyed higher ratings, but on the other hand, those parties were responsible for some of the worst television on cable TV.

Well, rather than live with that internal conflict gnawing at the core of their being, executive producer Sara Colleton has gone on record as saying season 8 will “absolutely” be Dexter‘s last.

Given last season’s cliffhanger, in which (SPOILER, YO!) sister Deb finds Dexter slamming his knife into the Doomsday Killer, there’s probably only a finite amount of time left for Dexter to go around killing people all the time before she feels compelled to raise her hand.

Colleton has also said that the producers wanted to end the series after this coming season, but Showtime “convinced” (read: threw big fistfuls of cash at)the team to stick around for one more season. Always the hallmark of a creative swan song.

For those not up-to-date with Showtime’s Dexter, read no further. SPOILERS AHEAD. Are you gone? Okay. At the end of last season, Dexter was revealed to be a martian. Now, with the government hot on heels he must hide with a suburban family and constantly wrestle with his lust for cat meat.

Are you really gone now? Okay. Actual SPOILERS. Season six of Dexter ended with Deb discovering her brother murdering the Doomsday Killer in his macabre ritual. This season, we’ll see how both Dexter and Deb deal with his secret being in the open. This teaser plays up that angle rather than focusing on Batista’s midlife crisis and his purchase of a vintage muscle car. I think they made the right move.

Dexter returns September 30th with Ray Stevenson and Yvonne Strahovski joining the cast.
