This impressive short entitled Modern Times was created by thirty-seven year old Scotland native Ben Craig. The guy never went to film school, has no formal training, and taught himself how to use all necessary visual effects software while he was editing the film. Now he’s looking at meetings with several major Hollywood studios, not to mention earning himself some major Internet cred. Moral of the story? Wait until your late thirties to tap into your talent. Kanye West Made A Movie Or Something

We don’t get a lot of chances to write about Kanye West on this site. He hasn’t appeared in any of the Fast and the Furious films, and it’s been awhile since he had a meltdown on live television. But now he’s stepping into the world of filmmaking. I think.

Posted below, we have the trailer for West’s latest vanity project Runaway, a 40-minute short film he’s been shopping around. He’s worked with a lot of talented directors throughout his career, so why did he choose to direct this himself? Despite the obvious reason.

"I know some of my images, my ideas, were so amateur, no director would want to do this for me. So I had to do it myself. I’d rather it be my vision and my dream and be sub par, than for it to be someone else’s vision and perfect."

The same quote can also be applied to Brett Ratner‘s work on X-Men 3.

Bidding War Breaks Out Over Short Film ‘The Gift’

Since District 9 struck box office gold without the use of 3D, Hollywood has been eager to buy up and adapt enticing sci-fi shorts. So it’s no surprise that a bidding war has broken out over commercial director Carl Erik Rinsch‘s The Gift, a look at a futuristic, dystopian Moscow where a robo-butler is hunted down for a box containing either miniature unicorns or rare Lisa Frank stickers. That outcome all depends on how literal Russian-version of Ricky Jay was being. From THR:

On Wednesday, the day the short came out, a bidding war broke out between several studios — longtime rivals Warner Bros. and Fox are in the mix, according to sources — who see feature potential in the short. Some speculate the project will end up at Fox, because Rinsch is part of the stable of RSA, Ridley Scott’s commercial house that produced the short, and Scott’s longtime association with Fox.

Rinsch was actually originally attached to the Alien prequel but was later ousted so papa bear Ridley Scott could take the wheel. Maybe Ridley will throw Rinsch his long-gestating Monopoly project. I’d love to see his gritty commentary on the stark living conditions of St. James Place and its neighboring prison.

Kanye West + Spike Jonze = Fairytale

Where the Wild Things Are arrived this past weekend, and it pretty much turned out to be a therapy session with a bunch of clinically depressed forty-somethings dressed like furries. So when we heard that "We Were Once a Fairytale," the Spike Jonze-directed film starring Kanye West, hit the Web today, it was the news equivalent of a Xanax.

We have the 11-minute piece here, minus the first minute or so. Spoiler alert: it’s effing weird.

Yeah, like we said, pretty weird. I’d like to see Spike Jonze revisit themes in Adaptation and do a film in which Kanye starts to interrupt himself, and then find out that his entire life was actually the daydream of an autistic child staring at a snow globe. That autistic child’s name? Kanye West.
