‘Short Circuit’ Reboot To Fall Under The Mindful Eye Of The ‘Alvin And The Chipmunks’ Director

Well, news came today that the guy who directed Alvin and the Chipmunks, Tim Hill, is going to direct a reboot of the 1986 robot comedy Short Circuit. And, as though we just found out that an asteroid is headed to earth, all we can do now is say our tearful good-byes and pray for a miracle.

Deadline reports that Dimension films is in the process of making a deal with Hill to reboot the property that they acquired in 2009. A sort-of silver lining can be found in the fact that the studio has scrapped the original team of Paul Blart: Mall Cop scribe Dan Milano and Paul Blart: Mall Cop director Steve Carr. Thank God for small miracles. It’ unknown at this time whether Johnny 5′s voice will be “urban” or “hilarious old Jewish guy.”

Hill will be supervising a new script that will, let’s face it, probably incorporate Kevin James into it one way or another.

‘Short Circuit’ Remake Via Paul Blart

When in doubt of who would be perfect to remake a classic, get the guy who directed Paul Blart: Mall Cop. Steve Carr already directed Are We Done Yet, the sequel to the Ice Cube smash hit Are We There Yet, so he obviously knows how to not ruin childhoods. Penned by Dan Milano of Robot Chicken, the Short Circuit remake is apparently going to have some edge to it:

"Built by the military to be a highly sophisticate weapon, Johnny 5 develops a conscience and personality after being hit by lightning. He befriends a lonely boy and his fractured family."

It’s going to insert itself into your imagination like the dull, rusty blade of a boy scout’s pocket knife. Perhaps the premise should have stopped at "Johnny 5 gets hit by lightning." The Paul Blart could reassemble the fried robot parts into a Segway and get a position as Head of Security at Mall of America, the largest mall in the country! I suppose terrorists could take it over after that. A Mall Cop sequel is something I can stand not seeing. A Short Circuit remake is something I can stand not existing.

DAVID CARRADINE FOUND DEAD IN BANGKOK

The U.S. Embassy has confirmed the death of Kung Fu and Kill Bill star David Carradine. The 72 year old actor was discovered early Thursday morning in his Bangkok hotel room. Currently there are conflicting reports concerning the cause of death. Screen Junkies would like to offer our sincere condolences to all of David’s loved ones.
