American fans of British television are used to being jerked around a little bit. Entire series will run for a combined ten episodes, broken into two comically short seasons, with about two years in between. It makes Mad Men seem like it’s on a rush order.

Well, you can set your cynicism aside for Sherlock, which will be returning for a fourth season (of probably only three long episodes) and a special before that airs, or even shoots.

The special will adhere to the storyline and resolve some season 3 questions, so think of it more as an early first episode of season 4 than something standalone. You know, like you would normally think of a special.

The special begins filming early next year, and the season starts filming late next year. In the meantime, get reacquainted with the first 9 episodes. That should take you a day or so.

Recently, Hulu has been ceding ground to Netflix in the battle for the hearts and minds of American TV audiences. While Netflix is still far ahead in the original programming department, Hulu is gaining ground in the next most prestigious area: British shit.

Hulu has struck an agreement with BBC North America to carry faves like Luther, Sherlock, Torchwood, and Doctor Who. To be clear, Netflix is still carrying most of these shows as well, so it’s not an either/or proposition, but rather just an effort to be less bad as it were.

Speaking of which, Hulu has also announced a ten-episode order for Deadbeat, a new show from Brad Pitt’s Plan B production shop. So it would appear that you will need Hulu for something other than current episodes of select shows.

Having been eagerly chomping at the bit, waiting Sherlock fans have a light at the end of the tunnel, with the announcement that series (season) three of the acclaimed BBC show will be airing in October in the UK, and January here in the colonies.

Fans of the show have been forced to adopt a masochistic bent, seeing as how the show has suffered frequent delays in filming, and each series is running on three episodes. However, each episode is tantamount to a movie, so what the show lacks in quantity, it makes up for in quality.

Anyway, this is all good news, and hopefully, for the initiated, a handful of new Sherlock eps can fill a Breaking Bad-sized hole in our hearts.

Benedict Cumberbatch Is As Suspicious Of CBS’ ‘Elementary’ As We Are http://www.screenjunkies.com/tv/tv-news/benedict-cumberbatch-is-as-suspicious-of-cbs-elementary-as-we-are/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/tv/tv-news/benedict-cumberbatch-is-as-suspicious-of-cbs-elementary-as-we-are/#comments Thu, 30 Aug 2012 22:14:05 +0000 Penn Collins http://www.screenjunkies.com/?p=250637 When it comes to contemporary Sherlock Holmes adaptations, Benedict Cumberbatch is the one who knocks.

Jonny Lee Miller, CBS development execs:

You just got Cumberbatch‘d.

Benedict Cumberbatch, the star of BBC’s acclaimed TV series-cum-saga Sherlock, has joined the rest of the world in raising an eyebrow at CBS’ remarkably similar Elementary which will star Cumberbatch’s Frankenstein co-star Jonny Lee Miller.

Said Cum-batch to Shortlist:

I think there’s room for us both to coexist. I don’t feel threatened by it and I wish him the best, which is as diplomatic as I can be.

However, he quickly took on a more sinister tone, conveying a bit of betrayal:

I did say, “Well, I’d prefer you didn’t do it but you’ve got a kid to feed, a nice house in LA and a wife to keep in good clothes.” When you get used to a certain standard of living and they waft a paycheck at you, what are you going to do? I think Jonny was like, “Mate, I’ve got the fucking mountain to climb here [to reach the acclaim of Sherlock], you’ve got nothing to fear.” I wish him the best of luck, but I’m a bit cynical about why they’ve chosen to do it and why they cast him.

Most importantly in this whole row, I walk away with new weapon in my arsenal of excuses. Namely, the exasperated, “Mate, I’ve got the fucking mountain to climb here.”
