When you get in your childless mid-30s, Christmas takes on a pretty different dynamic. You’re too old for presents and the lore, almost too old to keep coming home, and you don’t have any younger offspring to pass the magic onto.

So, if you’re Seth Rogen, Lizzie Caplan, Anthony Mackie, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, you get together with your friends and drink. That’s my guess. The only thing really known about the plot is that the characters get together every Christmas and that Gordon-Levitt and Caplan have a romantic thing going on.

Anyway, it will be nice to see Rogen with an ensemble cast that wasn’t curated by Judd Apatow (though Rogen’s work with Kevin Smith was far worse in Zack and Miri Make a Porno) and Jonathan Levine did a great job with 50/50 starring Joe and Seth, so let’s hope this is capable of being funny and having a heart.

Cause, you know. It’s Christmas.

North Korea, never one to have an irreverent sense of humor when it comes to people poking fun at them, has gone on record as saying they are not thrilled with The Interview. Or at least what they know of it so far, as something tells me they weren’t sent a screener just yet.

The film follows Americans as they endeavor to assassinate Kim Jung-Un. And it’s a comedy. I’m not surprised that North Korea isn’t tickled by the premise.

Kim Myong-chol, the executive director of the Centre for North Korea-U.S. Peace (start by spelling “center” the ‘merican way) had this to say:

“A film about the assassination of a foreign leader mirrors what the US has done in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, and Ukraine. And let us not forget who killed [President John F.] Kennedy—Americans.”

That’s admittedly, a pretty sick burn from North Korea, but if anything, it shows that it’s just in our nature to glamorize killing leaders, EVEN OUR OWN.

So don’t take it personally, North Korea. It’s not like you’re over there not killing your own people.

Seth Rogen, having sometimes, but still not all that often decided to stray from the road-tested formula of being a giant, grown-up boy, has once again teamed with James Franco and buddy/partner Evan Goldberg to bring us The Interview. It seems pretty high concept for him, too.

The Interview follows Rogen and Franco as they take a diplomatic trip to North Korea to kill Kim Jung Un. Huh. That’s…that’s something.

Even though the project is something of a departure, somewhat in the action vein, you’ll still see a lot of familiar faces, including fan fave Lizzie Caplan. Take a look.

Apatow extended family members Paul Rudd and Dany McBride, along with Workaholic Anders Holm, will be joining Seth Rogen’s Sausage Party, in keeping with the film’s name. While this won’t come as a surprise to many, all three are funny dudes, so what’s not to like?

They will be joining the actors already signed on, including James Franco, Jonah Hill, Michael Cera, Edward Norton, Nick Kroll, David Krumholtz, and Kristen Wiig.

I snuck that last one in on ya. Kristen Wiig is a girl. But she is in the film.

At this point, we should offer the heads-up that Sausage Party is an animated film, and all the actors will be voicing foodstuffs, as best we know.

Huh. Ok. That explains the two-year lead time.

The film will be written by Rogen and his partner Evan Goldberg, and will be produced and funded by Megan Ellison, who does this sort of thing because she’s pretty awesome.

The nice thing about being quietly powerful in Hollywood is that you get to make whatever you want. For instance, Seth Rogen gets to make a film about the awkward teenage years of video games. The film will be based upon the upcoming book Console Wars: Sega, Nintendo, And The Battle That Defined A Generation, and will be written and produced by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, the stoner Watson and Crick of Tinseltown.

Of course, when we learn that Rogen and Goldberg wrote the forward for the book, it become clear that this has been in the works for a moment now. Consider Console Wars the first shot fired in a battle of competing video game history films, with the other one being Ready Player One, which, despite having a more awesome title (and being a novel), doesn’t have any big names attached to it.

Poor guy.

As someone who’s been painted as a quintessential slacker in his films, it sure seems like Seth Rogen is a busy guy. In addition to his acting gigs, he has found time to produce and write the AMC TV adaptation of the comic Preacher.

Many have failed in trying to adapt Preacher, including Kevin Smith, DJ Caruso, and Sam Mendes. I never would have thought that Seth Rogen would succeed where Sam Mendes failed, but here we are.

Preacher tells the story of a man who becomes inhabited by the wills of both an angel and a demon, while getting empowered as an almost God-like being. The story takes place in Texas and…

Oh come on. It’s on AMC. You’ll watch it no matter what. And don’t give me that Low Winter Sun sass. This is going to be better than THAT.

AMC, who has a bit of success in the comic book/graphic novel-adaptation department with The Walking Dead, is looking to to parlay their good fortune here with another adaptation, this time of a gritty, cartoonish Western, called Preacher.

And just in case fortune doesn’t smile on them, they’ve got Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg in to develop it. That won’t hurt. Rogen took to Twitter saying that “Looks like seven years of hard work is about to pay off.” He then rattled off some Preacher characters on his Tweet, allowing fanboys to pick up the scent.

No word on confirmation from AMC’s end, let alone a possible air date, but as we all know, Twitter serves as a legally binding contract, so Seth Rogen will have to make good on his promise or face decades of jail time.

The premise actually sounds a little more Pineapple Express than Knocked Up, which I guess makes sense, since it’s go the guys from Pineapple Express in it. In the film, Franco and Rogen play Hollywood folk who get mixed up with Lizzie Caplan, who’s a CIA agent on a mission.

(I first read the synopsis as “CAA” agent, which led me to think, a) “Oh, that makes sense,” and b) “This movie sounds boring.”)

I can’t say that the movie won’t be boring, but it sounds better than a film about two jerks trying to get a TV show on the air.

The post 7 Reasons You Should Rewatch ‘This Is The End’ appeared first on Screen Junkies.

]]>
The end is nigh. Well, the end was nigh, then the end went away. But now it’s nigh again.

In case you didn’t pick up on that very clear message, This Is The End is coming back to theaters this weekend, and if you’ve seen it, be ready to get back in the theater again. (And if you haven’t seen it, please do so immediately so that you won’t find the title and subject matter of this article so alienating and distant.)

Having seen the movie, and thus been granted the benefit of hindsight, I assure you there are far more than seven reasons to see or re-see this film. I don’t address them all, not because I get off on withholding, but because there’s a pretty good chance that you’re reading this having not seen the movie. And considering this entire missive is an effort to get you to see the movie, let’s not reveal everything, no? It’s a high wire act, but if anyone is equal to the task, it’s you, dear reader.

7. The Soundtrack

Who wouldn’t want to revisit Cypress Hill, Psy, Backstreet Boys, Whitney Houston, Dr. Dre, and M.I.A.? A crazy person, that’s who. The movie essentially starts with a party then takes a macabre twist, but let’s focus on the party. These jams, except maybe for Whitney’s “I Will Always Love You” are party regulars. You could stand to check back in on them.

6. The Cameos (Except Michael Cera, Who Gets His Own Entry)

There are a lot, and it doesn’t really spoil anything to share who they are. Some stick around longer than others, but the list includes, but is not limited to: Michael Cera, Mintz-Plasse, Rihanna, Mindy Kaling, Martin Starr, Aziz Ansari, Kevin Hart, Jason Segel, Paul Rudd, and David Krumholtz.

5. The “Characters”

As you probably know, this film is brimming with that familiar Apatow clan, who play themselves. Whether or not they’re actually playing themselves in name only, or if they’re taking on affectations varies from person to person, but it’s a nice little subconscious game to figure out if the guy you’re staring at on the screen is really as hard/nice/goofy as the “character” seems.

4. The Fake Pineapple Express Sequel

Argh. It’s so frustrating when you want to talk about something hilarious but you don’t want to spoil it. It’s like buying someone an awesome Christmas (OR HANUKKAH) gift in July then having to sit on it. Seriously. Just everyone see the movie so we don’t have to dance around these issues, and we can really just…just open a dialog.

3. Marijuana Can Make Repeating The Same Activity Feel New Again

You know, if you are in a state with decriminalized pot or, failing that, medicinal marijuana and you happen to suffer from a treatable affliction. I don’t think it’s giving away a major plot point to say that Seth Rogen, James Franco, Craig Robinson, Jay Baruchel, and Danny McBride partake a little bit in the film. Why should they get to have all the fun?

2. Really Dissect Their Idea Of Heaven

Yet again, I must spare the newbies the details, as it’s a pretty great bow on the story. It looks very stark, very white, and very comfortable, but the soundtrack might ruffle a few feathers. Like, everyone’s feathers. Everywhere on their body.

1. Michael Cera!!!!

To say he “plays against type” is an understatement. His turn pretty much takes the film up an entire level with a modicum of screen time. Imagine if you rewatched Wall Street and saw Zack Galifianakis make a brief appearance as Gordon Gekko’s attorney. You get the gist.

Are you fan of Seth Rogen, Jay Baruchel, James Franco, and Danny McBride but find it frustrating that you have no control over their thoughts and actions? Your problems are solved. The guys have This Is The End headed to theaters on June 12th and as a “thank you” to the fans, they’ve agreed to get weird with one another.

Your involvement is simple. Just visit the This Is The End Facebook page and give them a LIKE. The more likes that they receive, the more crazy stuff you can see them do. For instance, if the page gets 500K likes, Danny McBride will wax Seth Rogen’s back (trust us, he’s overdue);  650K likes will force Jay Baruchel and Danny McBride to eat the same spaghetti noodle like a couple of lovesick dogs;  and for 800K likes Seth Rogen will paint a (hopefully tasteful) nude portrait of James Franco.

So, get to it. There’s hilarious male nudity out there just waiting for you! And remember to check back here as new videos are unlocked.

*****UPDATE*****

Enough of you liked the idea of Seth Rogen having his back waxed that Danny McBride is now bound by Internet law to have to do so. Just in time for swimsuit season.

*****UPDATE 2*****

Enough of you liked the idea of Jay and Danny sharing a romantic meal that the two went ahead and did it. Lady and the Tramp’s got nothing on this.

Seth Rogen looks like bigfoot and acts like bigfoot in many of his movies, so I can’t imagine a better person to spearhead a bigfoot project than he. And FX has shows like Archer and The League, so this should come together in one big beautiful storm!

The film will be based on graphic novels of the beast which paint the MONSTER as endearingly human and vulnerable. So that’s where the similarities to Seth Rogen stop, apparently. Just kidding. JUST KIDDING. He’s likable in small-to-moderate doses.

Rogen will be teaming up with his writing partner Evan Goldberg and American Dad writer Matt McKenna, so…expect a comedy?

For those of us who felt anger and disappointment after watching Paper Heart, vindication is here. The new red band trailer for This Is The End gives us a glimpse of the gruesome death Michael Cera suffers in the film. No sign of Charlene Yi but let’s assume she’s being torn apart by dogs off-screen somewhere.

The story follows an epic weekend in the life of Seth Rogen and his movie star buddies. It all starts at a party at James Franco’s house but things quickly take a turn when the Apocalypse begins — devastating Los Angeles and Judd Apatow‘s A-list. Great, now he’s going to have to put his kids in evvverything.

We all laughed at the Mayan prediction that the world would come to an end on this date, but now as I type this from the limbo state of eternal damnation I can see that maybe we should have listened better. Same in the case of Seth Rogen and his pals. This preview from next year’s This Is The End shows that they were all just hanging out having an Apatow buddies party when suddenly the world ended and now both Michael Cera and David Krumholtz are dead. Now we’ll never get a Numb3rs reunion special.

Oh God, has anyone checked in on Rob Morrow yet?!!

Much like that cat from Pet Sematary, Arrested Development’s return from the grave seemed like a good thing at first but has eventually brought with it destruction. The destruction of hope. When the cult favorite series was resurrected, comedy nerds called to see more of their departed favorites via Twitter, the Internet’s Ouija board.

Their calls to the other side have been heard. And rejected.

EW asked co-creator Judd Apatow about the likelihood of a movie, but it seems that he doesn’t want to go there.

“I love the question mark at the end of the series, so I never want to know more than that. It is the reason why you don’t want to find out what happened, like when they got off the bus in The Graduate.”

Paul Feig also crushes us, adding additional pressure onto the creators of Party Down.  ”I mean it could be great, but if it’s anything less than great, then it just waters down the memory of the rest of the show. For some reason that becomes the last thing you’ve done, and I always feel like if you don’t get it right it erases the memory of what came before it. But I don’t know. If we came up with a great idea, who knows?”

So, there is hope?! Thank God those kids haven’t grown out of their awkward phases yet!

The post The Independent Spirit Awards (AKA The Hipster Oscars) Explained appeared first on Screen Junkies.

]]>
Since slamming the Oscars for being a self-congratulatory, bloated mess is now more fashionable than actually discussing the awards, many film purists are looking for an avenue that champions the films themselves rather than the industry and studios that make them.

Since 1984, the Spirit Awards have existed to reward actors and filmmakers that existed outside the world of big-budget Hollywood productions. 28 years ago, when the awards were first introduced, the rift between independent cinema and Hollywood fare was much larger than it was today, so the likelihood of any overlap between the Oscars and the Spirit Awards was almost unthinkable.

Today, a gap still exists, albeit a narrower one, thanks to increased access to independent films and the general mainstreaming and adoration of all things indie. So the night before the Oscars, the other Hollywood gets dolled up in their pixie dresses and blazers and sneakers to bestow some recognition on the filmmakers that are just too damn cool for the Oscars.

Yeah, they got Franco.

To give you an idea of how the Spirit Awards have gradually become more mainstreamed, this year’s host is Seth Rogen, a huge Hollywood star with enough of that slacker credibility to reassure everyone that, yes, they’re all very cool for being in attendance.

The Awards

The recognition given out by the Spirit Awards closely mirrors the Oscars in its prestige categories (Best Director, Best Feature, Supporting and Lead awards for Males and Females, etc). However, instilled with the spirit of independent cinema, the awards also showcase first-time directors, first-time screenwriters, as well as an award for the best feature made for under $500,000.

Of course, the Spirit Awards don’t have the huge backing or TV contract that the Academy Awards do, so despite being all “indie,” they bear names such as the Audi Someone to Watch Award, the Nokia Truer Than Fiction Award, and the Jameson Find Your Audience Award.

It's not an awards show unless you have a pregnant Natalie Portman in attendance, which is why the Oscars pay someone to knock her up every year.

One reason the sponsors are necessary is that, in addition to bragging rights, the aforementioned awards all come with grants that allow the filmmakers to keep doing their thing. So while having sponsors for independent cinema awards may seem a little counterintuitive, it’s done so that the recipients can keep staying independent and away from those godforsaken Hollywood studios.

 The Nominees

Again, you might see a little overlap here with the Oscars, as the Academy Awards are allowed to pick from all films, regardless of how they were produced or distributed, while the Spirit Awards stick with films made outside of major studios.

The Broadcast

The awards aren’t too indie to be aired on TV, and the ceremony, usually held in Santa Monica, though for some reason held in a tent downtown last year) can be found live on IFC (duh).

Oh. The Spirit Awards often have figure skater Johnny Weir in attendance. Advantage: Spirit Awards

Like the Golden Globes, liquor is served during this show, giving it a peppier, more spontaneous feel. Futher, the Spirit Awards are a banquet-style ceremony, giving the affair a more casual feel than a seated theater awards show would have. Given the shoestring budget inherent with an indie awards show, the ceremony cuts out the superfluous sketches and prdocutions, just leaving hosts and awards. While this might sound a little dry, what it does is allow the people on stage (who are really the ones being celebrated) to spend a little more time entertaining the crowd, rather than moving through forced unfunny skits. Also, it caps the ceremony at two-and-a-half hours, which is about ninety minutes less than the Oscars.

So, if you just LOVE awards shows, but think the Oscars have become a self-important overblown mess (because it has), give the Spirit Awards a whirl. You may have a hard time getting your friend to fill out a Spirit Awards pool, but you’ll be able to sit through the event without getting bedsores, and you might even learn a little bit about film, which is something the Academy gave up on a long time ago.

This weekend, Seth Rogen takes on cancer for a second time with the comedy 50/50. He stars alongside Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who plays a young man that finds out he’s living with the disease. The comedy-drama takes a look at the complicated feelings one experiences while undergoing cancer treatment and facing their own mortality.

Sounds like a tough sell in the humor department, but if done with enough heart, the results can be equally hilarious and moving. Here are five films that were bold enough to mix a little levity in with their heavy subject matter.

Funny People

This list doesn’t just prove that cancer can be approached in a humorous manner, it also proves that Seth Rogen might actually cause cancer. Perhaps he’s unknowingly radioactive like Dr. Manhattan, or maybe he’s poisoning soup with Pine Sol like that lady in The Sixth Sense. After appearing alongside a cancer-stricken Adam Sandler in Funny People and Joseph Gordon-Levitt in 50/50, it’s clear that Rogen could be to blame. Jonah Hill‘s sudden weight loss is starting to make a lot of sense.

My Life

When father-to-be Michael Keaton is diagnosed with terminal cancer of the kidneys, he decides to videotape himself giving life lessons to his unborn son. He records instructions on how to shave, play sports, use jumper cables, talk to girls, and cook spaghetti. Sadly by the time his son is old enough to appreciate these lessons, VHS is deemed outdated and they are impossible to view. :(

If you’re going to play in the Apatow universe, you can NOT half-ass it. Go big or go home. Well, Seth Rogen, producer and star of the film (along with Jay Baruchel) has gone big, adding frequent Apatow staples James Franco, Craig Robinson, Jonah Hill, and Danny McBride to Seth and Jay Vs. The Apocalypse. As you might imagine, the film follows the titular Jay and Seth, a stoner duo waiting out the end of days.

Aside from the casting news, Rogen has said he wants to paint a pretty “offensive” view of the apocalypse, with the only opportunity for celebrities to cameo in the film coming if they’re willing to play corpses of themselves.

Dead Steve Carell? I could get behind that.

Seth and Jay Vs. The Apocalypse begins filming in February, with Rogen and Evan Goldberg co-directing.

This morning we have a new trailer for Will Reiser’s autobiographical 50/50 that focuses more on the comedic and less on the film’s bummerific aspects. This shorter look leans more heavily on Seth Rogen to make light of Joseph Gordon-Levitt‘s cancer like any good friend would. Though as evidenced here, using cancer to pick up chicks isn’t as foolproof as it sounds. It’s cancer. Not a puppy.

50/50 opens in theaters on September 30th and also stars Anna Kendrick, Bryce Dallas Howard, Phillip Baker Hall, and Angelica Houston.

The post Seth Rogen To Play A Schlub On ‘The League’ This Time appeared first on Screen Junkies.

It’s been a pretty fruitful weekend for FX. First, they announced that It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Wilfred, and Louie all got picked up for an additional season, with Sunny actually garnering a two-season pickup. Now, news comes out that The League will get a guest appearance from one of the biggest comedic stars in Hollywood, Seth Rogen.

Rogen will be a playing a character that has been referenced on the show before. A gentleman by the name of Dirty Randy. Dirty Randy is a friend of last season’s Raffi. Rogen’s character is a porno location scout and is known to clean up the locations after shooting is done.

Seth Rogen has made a name for himself by consistently playing a slacker man-child in most every role, so it would be nice to see him go over-the-top with the character of Dirty Randy, if only for the sake of variety. I mean, how conservatively do you want to play a character named Dirty Randy, anyway?

Universal, deciding they can ignore the cries of the masses no more, is about to close on a pitch that would team hearthrob Zac Efron up with, uh, everyman Seth Rogen for an untitled R-rated comedy that Deadline claims has “the tone of Old School.” Hmm. Interesting.

The plot is as follows:

Rogen plays a regular guy who lives near an alpha male fraternity house. Efron is a member of the fraternity, whose raucous behavior wreaks havoc on the other guy’s family life.

Of course, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg will serve as producers of the project, which was scripted by Andrew Cohen and Brendan O’Brien. It’s thought that Rogen will be making a cool $8 million for this project, which seems like an awful lot of money to act like yourself, but I’m just a writer.

It’s nice to see Efron bust out of the pretty-boy mold with both this and The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman. Maybe this hope for this guy yet.

The principals for Jamaica represent a stoner-tastic bunch with the announcement that Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg have teamed with director Jonathan Levine (The Wackness) and writer Will Reiser, who had previously teamed with Rogen on the upcoming “cancer comedy” 50/50. Unfortunately, Rogen and Goldberg will only be serving as producers, rather than writers or actors. The cast has not yet been found/announced.

Jamaica will draw from Will Reiser’s real-life experience of travelling to the island with his grandmother when he was 14. So there might not be as many weed jokes as one would think. But rest easy, stoners, as that probably means there will just be “a lot” as opposed to “a shit ton.”

The project is being fasttracked with Mandate, so unless there’s going to be some huge unforeseen effects here, this should hit theaters in relatively short order. Which is good, because I don’t know how much longer I can hold out without seeing a grandmother in a bathing suit.

I would like to say “hello” to Al Pacino‘s little friend, assuming that friend is now a double neck guitar.

Pacino is close to playing an aging rock star, which I think could be an amazing fit for the eccentric actor. I can see him getting a big kick out of smashing expensive musical instruments in a crazy rage. He’s currently circling the lead in Imagine, about an old rocker who uncovers a lost letter to him from John Lennon, prompting him to turn his life around. Man, I could use a lost letter from John Lennon right now. I had the worst day.

Imagine comes from the pen of screenwriter Dan Fogelman (Tangled), who’ll make his directing debut with this project. Fogelman is currently on fire, in the NBA Jam sense. He wrote July’s Crazy, Stupid, Love starring Steve Carell, who dropped out of Imagine due to scheduling conflicts. He also wrote the upcoming My Mother’s Curse starring Barbra Streisand and Seth Rogen. (LA Times)
