Source Code had pretty high expectations set when it was released a few years ago. It was Duncan Jones‘ big studio directorial debut, and it starred the ever-so-hot Jake Gyllenhaal. And it did…all right. Critics looked at it favorably, and audiences did too, though it was far from a blockbuster.

For those reasons, and in light of the ending, Source Code was not the kind of film you’d necessarily want to make a sequel for.

They’re making a sequel for Source Code.

However, the stakes sound remarkably smaller. Duncan Jones is gone, replaced by Anna Foerster, who’s done some big stuff as a second unit director, but no big fare as a helmer. Gyllenhaal is gone, too. We don’t know who he’s getting subbed in for him.

But the writer, Ben Ripley, is back. So that’s something. The fact that this is produced by the Mark Gordon company, which has really only got cable TV fare in development right now might mean this is a straight-to-DVD project or…something. It doesn’t seem primed for a big release, but maybe a small release is better.

It’s become a standard (and hilarious) practice for a studio to announce the day after a big opening weekend that there will be a sequel. I’m sure there’s some marketing consideration to it, like people will be more inclined to go if they know it will continue in the future, but it’s easy to chalk it up to execs being impulsive, impatient, and money hungry.

Both are probably true.

On that note, Godzilla is getting a sequel after having pulled in $107 million worldwide and garnering not-that-bad reviews. My theory? People just really miss Breaking Bad still and will pay to see Cranston wherever they can.

As for the premise, the whole initiative is about four hours old, so there isn’t a script, but it’s likely they’ll go back to the well of existing Godzilla characters, as there was an Easter egg in the film that shows an empty aquarium with “Mothra” written on it.

So, see ya summer 2016?

The Goonies will be back, or so says original director Richard Donner, whom TMZ accosted while he was signing autographs. In no uncertain terms, Donner says in the video, “We’re making a Goonies sequel.”

When asked if the stars will return, he responds, “Hopefully, all of them.” Sure. Good luck fitting it into Corey Feldman‘s filming schedule these days.

CAUTION: You have to put up with some stupid incendiary babble from the TMZ video guy to get to the point.

Citing the undue burden that the very successful Simpsons film put on his writing staff, producer David Silverman said we’re probably looking at a really long time before another installment of the Simpsons film franchise. A really long time. Like so long that 20% of the people reading this could be dead by the time it happens*.

(*I am not an actuary, and this statistic is almost certainly untrue.)

While The Simpsons has certainly slid from cultural relevance over the past decade or so, it’s never, ever, ever going to end, so let’s all just hope that this film gets done before most of the voice cast or audience dies during The People’s North Korean invasion of the United States in 2021.

Spy films are generally some of the most boring films ever made. This opinion may open me up to criticism that I don’t appreciate nuance, delicate tension, etc. Whatever. Spy films move at a snail’s pace, and there seems to be little in the way of differentiation between some of the best and some of the worst.

That said, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy was one of the most painful films of the last year to watch. It was long, boring, and at the risk of being redundant, British.

Thank heavens they’re making a sequel to return us to this world. Tim Fellner, head of Working Title studio, made the unsettling statement:

“We are working on another one. Tim Bevan is putting it together as we speak with Peter Straughan and Tomas Alfredson, so yes it’s in development… It did unbelievably well and it didn’t cost hardly anything… But things take time.  Tim is passionate about making sure we do another one.”

And now I’m passionate about stopping it from being made.

For those of you who can’t afford to pay first-class prices for your X-Men, help is on the way. Fox has given the go ahead for a sequel to last summer‘s mutant-filled prequel. And if my college education is worth a good god damn, it stands to reason that the only title that will make sense is X-Men: Second Class. Am I right?

In keeping with the second class theme, Simon Kinberg, the writer behind crap-tacular films such as X-Men: Last Stand and xXx: State of the Union has been tapped to write the script. That’s a lot of X’s.

But in all fairness, I probably should blame Kinberg for the way Last Stand turned out considering Brett Ratner was directing. Kinberg also penned the screenplay for Sherlock Holmes, which wasn’t a bad flick. So unlike myself as well as my immediate family, maybe there’s some hope left for this sequel. (Vulture)

Good news for people who like breasts and carnivorous fish! A sequel for Piranha 3D is officially in the works. Despite a slower than expected start at the box office, the film did fairly well when considering its budget was only $30 million. Couple that with an overwhelmingly positive critical reception, and it's easy to see why the Weinsteins and Co. signed off another installment. Since the fourth dimension is time, I'm assuming Piranha 4D will involve the piranhas taking control of some sort of water-based time machine and traveling back to the Old West. Unless, of course, they end up naming it Piranha 3D Part 2, which would just be stupid. (Cinema Blend)

Joey, do you like sequels about gladiators?

For those of us who’ve seen Ridley Scott’s Gladiator, it’s probably a safe bet to say the story of Russell Crowe’s Maximus has already reached a satisfying end.  (If you haven’t seen it and you don’t mind SPOILERS… Maximus dies at the end after accomplishing all he set out to do, leaving no room for sequels per se).

Yep, there is absolutely no way an audience could ever expect anything more from Crowe and Scott’s collaboration.  A sequel – aside from being completely unnecessary – seems nearly impossible.  Where’s the entry point?  There is no way the talent involved would even think about approaching a sequel to such a celebrated, complete story.  Right?

What?  We’re talking about Hollywood?  In 2009?  Oh.  Ahem.  Right.

Turns out that Nick Cave, writer of Australian western The Proposition and the upcoming adaptation of The Road, has written out a Gladiator 2 script that the folks over at Gone Elsewhere got a hold of.

If you’re into lengthy reviews, then you can check it out on their site.  If you’re into the Cliff Notes, then look no further than the jump.

Basically, G2 starts out with Maximus in the heavens, where he’s challenged by the Roman gods, then finds his way back to Rome, where Lucius (the little kid from the first movie) in fighting a war against Christianity.  Maximus leads an army of Christians to freedom, in turn angering the gods and making him an eternal warrior, fighting in all of the world’s major wars.  Sound confusing?  That’s because it is.

The script is supposedly very good by itself, which is not hard to expect from Nick Cave, an exceptional writer when it comes to dark and violent films.  But the big question remains:

“Why the hell would you make a sequel to Gladiator?”

This plot sounds like Neil Gaiman wrote some bitchin’ fan fiction that he intended to post on a message board.  But this doesn’t sound like some belated April Fool’s joke.  I suspect we’ll be hearing a lot more about this very soon…
