MTV has announced that they’ve given the green light to a television pilot based on the Scream films. Written by Kevin Williamson and directed by Wes Craven, the Scream films are best known for skewering horror movie tropes as well as literally skewering attractive teens. In a news release, the network said it was working with Dimension to “reinvent the successful horror comedy franchise that spawned three sequels and unleashed ‘Ghostface’ to a legion of unsuspecting fans.” While the network is still speaking with writers, Dimension is still working on a deal to have Craven return to direct the one-hour pilot.

I’d imagine that the series would be presented as a season long mystery as the audience tries to figure out the identity of the masked killer (or killers) that is terrorizing the student body. However, I’m not sure the format can sustain that concept with more and more of the cast being killed off each episode. The Scream movies have always managed to keep it fresh and subvert expectations, so let’s hope the eventual series will be able to do the same. At the very least, let’s hope it’s better executed than Teen Wolf. (NY Times)

This bloody take on The Breakfast Club has inspired us to take a look at the great high school horror films of our time. As if school wasn’t bad enough without people getting shot, stabbed, eaten, possessed, hit by buses, or a combination of all of those.

The Craft

A girl with a troubled past moves to a town where she befriends a clique of three girls who happen to dabble in the occult. The four begin casting spells together which brings them unimaginable power. However, power corrupts and soon Fairuza Balk goes totally psycho just witching the crap out of everyone. It’s like Mean Girls with lightning fingers.

Heathers

Another high school horror that deals with the subject of popularity and social hierarchy, Heathers goes to some dark places. When a prank leads to the accidental death of the school’s Queen Bee, it’s believed to be a suicide. Before you know it, everyone wants to get in on this teenage suicide craze. This film features one of the first appearances of Christian Slater, who America would fall for as the crazed, kill-happy mastermind behind it all.

Jennifer’s Body

Diablo Cody‘s follow-up to Juno is a far cry from teenage pregnancy and lost youth. The story centers around Megan Fox’s Jennifer, a high school student (yeah, right) sacrificed to a demon. Not one to let hot teen ass go to waste, the demon possesses her and uses her form to seduce and eat the boys in her class. Largely underrated, the film was poorly-received by critics and girls who aren’t as pretty as Megan. But it gave us some genuinely memorable scares and scenes. And this picture:

The Faculty

A mix of Invasion of the Body Snatchers and The Breakfast Club, The Faculty centers on six students discovering that their school is being taken over by alien invaders. The unlikely allies (nerd, jock, Goth, hot girl, hick, and rebel) team up to save not only themselves but Earth itself. Starring Elijah Wood and Josh Hartnett. Remember him?

Final Destination

Though we don’t see any action in the halls of the high school, Final Destination tries to take us along with a group of students on their senior trip to Paris. Tries being the key word. Before their flight disembarks, a student has a premonition that the plane will explode, killing them all. He fights his way off the plane, inadvertently taking a few others with him. Moments later, the plane actually explodes. From there, the survivors find they are being stalked by death as they are killed in the most grisly and random accidents. The film has spurred four sequels. Some good, some insultingly bad. But all feature completely gnarly death scenes for all of the gore hounds.

Scream

The instant classic that brought horror back to the box office, for better or worse. This sly, self-referential slasher film kept us guessing and screaming with intense scares and hidden motives. In addition to carving up students at Woodsboro High, the film also carved up and dissected the horror genre itself by laying out and then subverting the rules of Hollywood horror filmmaking. Scream is arguably one of the most important and influential films of the 90′s.

A Nightmare on Elm Street

If high school horror were a contest, Wes Craven‘s original A Nightmare on Elm Street would be the clear winner. Students experiencing vivid nightmares featuring the same burn-covered ghoul discover that when they die in their dream, they die in real life. Pulled into a nightmarish wonderland, it’s a fight for survival and sanity as buried secrets refuse to stay that way. And then there were all those hokey sequels, but hey, whatevs.

Simple Jack (Tropic Thunder)

In the hopes of winning an Oscar, Tropic Thunder’s Tugg Speedman goes a bit overboard in his portrayal of a mentally-retarded adult. Having not received the guidance of never going “full retard,” he put it all out there and doomed his career in the process.

Choice Line: Goodbye Momma. Now you can eat ice cream in Heaven.

You Just Don’t Exist (Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World)

Chris Evans steals the show as Lucas Lee, the self-serious action star who Michael Cera must square off against. Just check out this scene from You Just Don’t Exist. Dude is not messing around.

There are certain rules one must follow in order to throw a successful Murder Party. First, don’t forget your knife. Second, don’t forget to stock up on Doritos. You can’t murder without a knife and you can’t party without Doritos.

Romy and Michele’ s High School Reunion

It’s of high importance to Romy and Michele that they wow their former classmates at their high school reunion. Which means they are put on a Doritos-free diet. They are allowed half a chip at best.

Encino Man

Doritos. The official snack of annoying California teens and the cavemen they unearth.

Wayne’s World

Wayne’s World is perhaps the biggest role for the famous chip brand. Granted, the film was never expected to be the runaway hit that it became, launching the careers of Mike Myers and Dana Carvey in the process. Doritos, however, wasn’t able to parlay the success into larger roles after finding itself replaced by M&M’s in the sequel.

The Internet rumor mill is working overtime tonight, speculating that Jennifer Aniston will be joining her former "Friends" co-star, Courtney Cox, in the upcoming horror sequel, Scream 4.

According to Star Magazine, which is one step up from reading the scribblings on a bathroom wall, Aniston’s character will die early on. This follows in the tradition of the previous Scream films which have all killed off a big-name star within the first few minutes.

If the rumors prove true, it will not be the first stab at the horror genre for either actress. Cox has been a mainstay of the Scream franchise since its inception, and Aniston has been terrifying audiences for years with films such as The Break-Up and He’s Just Not That Into You. (CinemaBlend)

Dimension Films has confirmed that Scream 4 will go into production in Spring 2010 for an April 12th, 2011 release. Wes Craven will again direct, as initially suspected, and original Scream creator Kevin Williamson will write the script. Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox, and (unfortunately) David Arquette Cox will all be reprising their roles. I really hope David takes his character Dewey to full retard in this one. It doesn’t make sense for him to scale back his own personality just for the sake of acting. (Variety)
