Ladies: protect your boobs from sharks... at all costs.

Just watched the above trailer for Shark Night 3D, starring Sara Paxton. I suppose any excuse to see boobs is probably a worthwhile use of my time, though this movie seems pretty horror-by-the-numbers-y. They’re on a booty trip in the middle of nowhere, the main black guy is the first to get attacked, there’s a shark POV shot of a girl’s legs dangling – same old, same old. Still, though… boobs. Also, a guy gets lowered down to the shark against his will, which I fully support.

6 photosSara Paxton

Shark Night 3D comes to us from director David Ellis (Snakes on a Plane), who originally wanted to title the film to be Untitled 3D Shark Thriller. I’m hoping there’ll be at least a little bit of self-mocking, or something worth making a hilarious-for-a-time meme out of, that’s not represented in the trailer. Or maybe it’s a really scary thriller, and the trailer just picks parts we’d be “familiar” with. Otherwise, I’m swimming off to boobier waters on September 2nd.

Some posters you hang on your wall, others you look at on the internet to get psyched about an upcoming movie. Could you do both? I suppose… you could. We’ve got new one-sheets for The Descendants, Shark Night 3D and some movie about a wizard guy that everybody likes. Merlin? No, I think he’s younger. Teen Merlin from Teen Merlin: The Extreme Spells? Yeah, that must be it.

Harry Potter is serious business. That’s what I’ve learned from the dramatic new poster above for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, about the boy wizard (Daniel Radcliffe)</strong fighting He-Who-Could-Use-A-Nose. The drama is visible: the dirt and scars on the face, the red dots of intensity magic, and of course, “IT ALL ENDS” in caps, barely able to stay within the poster limits. Is there a Photoshop spell for that? Magic-blasts into theaters July 15, 2011. (/Film)

Alexander Payne‘s The Descendants stars George Clooney as a rich family man whose cheating wife dies, causing him to re-evaluate his life. It opens December 16, 2011. The new poster shows Clooney looking towards the ocean. Is he staring at his daughters, or is he hearing something else? A girl screaming for her life, perhaps… ? (IndieWire)

Shark Night 3D is the follow-up to Snakes On A Plane from director David Ellis. It will feature hot bikini girls, screaming, sharks, and presumably, night scenarios. Sounds good to me. Sara Paxton stars, chomping into theaters September 14, 2011. (IGN)

Sara Paxton has a lengthy resume for an actress her age. That’s probably because she’s been in the business since she was a kid, starting out in 1996 with a spot on the television series “Small Talk.” Notable roles since then include her appearance as a mermaid in Aquamarine and a part in over-the-top spoof flick Superhero Movie. Later this year she’ll play a chick who maybe gets eaten in Shark Night 3D.

A word from Sara: “I mean I am not Hilary Duff. Like, I have my own path that I’m going to go on.”

This sizzle reel is gonna sizzle fo sho.

The Cannes Film Festival is a place where high profile movies debut, and many others try to snag international distribution deals. The movies don’t even have to be finished yet. Liars All is showing a sizzle reel to buyers. We were on the set in Los Angeles on Friday as they’re still shooting the movie.

“It happened so fast,” director Brian Brightly said. “In the first 12 days they cut a reel, we sent the publicity pictures over. ID’s [PR] been fantastic so [Cinema Management Group’s] got 16 meetings today with buyers looking at our sizzle reel, which is pretty great. It’s not the movie, it’s just a suggestion of the movie but it’s fun that everybody’s invested in trying to get it out there.”

6 photosSara Paxton

For all you Cannes buyers, here’s what you’ll see if you take a meeting with CMG’s team. Liars All is a mystery thriller with sexual themes starring Sara Paxton, “The Tudors”’ Torrance Coombs and “90210” stars Matt Lanter and Gillian Zinser. A game leads to a murder, and three different recollections of the event uncover what really happened.

“Some of the sexual things that we’re doing are so foreign to me,” Paxton said. “I find it to be so nerve-wracking. I think that’s really difficult for everybody. Is that just me? I think it’s so awkward and it’s a whole different level of uncomfortable.”

Also a far cry from “90210.” Zinser gets to play a dangerous femme fatale. “Why don’t you just say a manic depressive on the verge of losing her shit,” Zinser said. “It’s definitely something I haven’t played before. I took this role because of that. It’s probably the most powerful alpha character I’ve ever been able to play. She’s very much the opposite of wh I am and who I’ve played thus far so it’s been interesting for sure.”

I the spirit of Cannes, Liars All is a European movie. It’s set in London as American college students go abroad, and Brightly is shooting it like a European movie. “I was always excited about doing a movie that had sort of the thrills of a Blood Simple but the beauty of a movie like The Dreamers,” Brightly said. “I watched The Diving Bell and the Butterfly and The Dreamers and Amelie and visually just got a template for what I wanted the movie to look like, which is very painterly, fantasy dream as the night begins and then as the reality of the danger comes in, it’s fractured into a much more realistic thriller. So it was fun to sort of have the visual landscape and then pour the story into it.”

So a teen movie with Bertolucci references. “Actually Brian showed us all a scene from The Dreamers where he wanted us to have the feel of it,” Lanter said. “I was kind of intrigued by the movie. I hadn’t seen it so I actually watched the whole thing. [In] The Dreamers there’s a friendship aspect and in a nonsexual way a threesome aspect to it where they’re kind of friends, two of them are kind of romantic, the other one wants to be and then they end up.”

Oh, and Brightly’s already going for an R rating. There won’t be any nudity, but the plot gets twisted far beyond what they can show on The CW. “For me [nudity] was less important than communicating that sex is power in this movie,” Brightly said. “So much of it is about the games and the manipulation. The whole movie for me was I’m fascinated by how our perceptions shift and I’m fascinated by the consequence of deceit, the consequence of falsifying. The movie’s all about that. It’s all about this is my version, what’s your version? This is how I remember it. How do you remember it? This is what I’d like to be saying but this is what I’m actually doing. Those kind of things.”

Listen, I will still defend Snakes on a Plane ‘til the day I die. It’s been five years, and no other movie since has given us snakes, on a plane. I think director David Ellis can do the same for sharks. I found out a little bit more about Shark Night 3D from Sara Paxton on the set of her next movie. She’s shooting Liars All in Los Angeles, but Shark Night gave her hardcore swimming lessons.

“They stuck me in a lake and there’s frickin’ water moccasins and alligators and there can be real bull sharks,” Paxton said. “I’m in the lake wading, and we trained with the Navy SEALS for like a month before the movie.”

No, it was not SEAL Team 6. Paxton’s Liars All costar Matt Lanter made that joke before even I could. “Oh, I get it, I get it,” Paxton said.

More importantly, Shark Night is full of young hotties in bikinis and real old school shark effects. “We got to have fun in a lake with seven young people in bathing suits all day, with animatronic sharks,” she said. “They didn’t want it to get too CGI and I kind of agree with that because I feel like too much CGI just doesn’t look that great to me.”

Shark Night 3D comes out September 14.
