Whoa! Stevie Janowski can grow a beard!!

This morning we have a first look at Quentin Dupieux’s Wrong, his second feature after exploding heads with the head-exploding telekinetic tire movie, Rubber. Starring William Fichtner and Jack Plotnick, the film is only described as a movie about a man and his missing dog.

In the above still, we see Steve Little (aka”Eastbound and Down‘s” Stevie Janowski), who I’m surprised to see can grow a beard. Here he presents a plain white ball. Is it a clue? A missing piece to a larger puzzle that will return the man to his canine? Or is it a ruthless, cold-blooded killer ball? One that can bounce around a room of its on free will, breaking windows and necks and leaving a pile of bodies a mile-high?

Meh, probably just a normal, old ball. (Quentin Dupieux’s Twitter)

Won't you help against the scourge of murderous telepathic tires?

The best killer-tire movie of the first part of 2011 is Rubber, and it’s been getting a lot of buzz for the way it illuminates the killer-tire problem that exists in the American southwest. You can inform yourself well in advance of the film’s April 2nd release date by watching this new red band trailer. It’s even kind of tame as red band trailers go, so you might be able to get away with watching this at work. Here’s a plot synopsis:

RUBBER is the story of Robert, an inanimate tire that has been abandoned in the desert, and suddenly and inexplicably comes to life. As Robert roams the bleak landscape, he discovers that he possesses terrifying telepathic powers that give him the ability to destroy anything he wishes without having to move. At first content to prey on small desert creatures and various discarded objects, his attention soon turns to humans, especially a beautiful and mysterious woman who crosses his path. Leaving a swath of destruction across the desert landscape, Robert becomes a chaotic force to be reckoned with, and truly a movie villain for the ages.

Enjoy, and thank you once again for your small part in the fight against killer tires. (via /Film)

This concept has been done to death, but when it comes to movies about killer tires, Quentin Depieux's Rubber is the best of the bunch.

This concept has been done to death, but when it comes to movies about killer tires, Quentin Depieux’s Rubber really sets the bar. In this new trailer, we meet Robert, an abandoned tire who roams the desert leaving a string of dead bodies in his wake.

All in all, this looks like a fun film. I have no idea how this idea a) was imagined, b) was deemed suitable to film, c) hasn’t won the Pulitzer. Look for it really hard in theaters starting April 1st.

Rubber became a Cannes phenomenon based on its outrageous premise. That alone carried it through Fantastic Fest where its first screening sold out, and I finally made it into the second, which also sold out.

All you need to know is that it is about a tire that kills people. That is enough to get you to see Rubber. That’s certainly all I needed to hear. I would watch a trilogy about killer tires.
More after the jump...

Rubber became a Cannes phenomenon based on its outrageous premise. That alone carried it throug Fantastic Fest where its first screening sold out, and I finally made it into the second, which also sold out.

All you need to know is that it is about a tire that kills people. That is enough to get you to see Rubber. That’s certainly all I needed to hear. I would watch a trilogy about killer tires.

More after the jump…

It’s actually so much more and I don’t think that’s getting out. So I’m not going to ruin it, but I’m going to describe it. This is a French New Wave film about the phenomenon of visual entertainment.

Rubber opens with Officer Chad (Stephen Spinella) addressing the audience about movies. It’s hilariously self-referential and perceptive, and then it has fun with it, and with us. His speech is still true, even when his examples are purposefully wrong. Other characters are involved in creating this weird world of observing and creating, but describing the specifics is both a spoiler and unnecessary.

Be prepared for obscure dry humor that challenges the reality we accept in film. Rubber has its own rules, but they’re not the natural laws that govern reality or most reality-based movies. It questions our role in watching movies and still delivers a great viewing experience.

The tire moves with character and emotion. Having a practical tire goes a long way, whether they controlled it remotely or stop motion animated it or just had some dude shaking it off camera. Even killer tires watch girls shower, so the killer tire movie really delivers on genre, then goes above and beyond.

I love movies that just try to be awesome even if it makes no sense. Awesome beats sense every time. The plausibility of a killer tire is only the beginning of Rubber’s awesome nonsense. You can feel the satisfaction behind the scenes as writer/director/editor Quentin Dupieux invents a new film language.
