We’re just eight days away from the official start of Movember, which means you better get your ass over to the Break Movember page and sign up! Start November 1st clean shaven, then proceed to grow a killer Moustache, all while raising funds for men’s health. Last year, Movember raised $81 million for prostate research, and this year we plan on helping the break that record.

I don’t want to name any names, but some of you are probably a little skeptical about growing a moustache because you’re worried about the way you’ll look. First of all, it’s for charity, and a little hair on your lip isn’t a lot to ask for in the fight against prostate cancer. Second of all, girls don’t talk to you anyway, so how is this going to matter? Third, and perhaps most importantly, a moustache is almost guaranteed to improve your appearance. She is known primarily for her modeling work with Victoria’s Secret, and Dark of the Moon will be her first shot at acting. Does she have what it takes to match Megan Fox‘s talent, poise, and grace? Has the name “Megan Fox” ever been used in the same sentence as those three words? These are important questions. Take it away, Michael Bay.

A word from Rosie: “I would love to pursue acting now, it was always something at the back of my head. But I don’t know how similar modelling and acting are, they do go hand in hand so well in so many ways, but also they’re completely different.”

Review: Transformers: Dark Of The Moon

Transformers: Dark of the Moon is better than abstinence. I said Transformers 1 was better than sex (look it up on Rotten Tomatoes.) I stand by that, but the sequels are no such thrill. At this point, I’d be willing to tolerate the Transformers movies as long as I don’t have to give up sex in real life, and yes this analogy has gotten away from me.

If this were just a movie about cool robot fights, that would be awesome. That’s not what it is though. The robot fights are only okay at best, and it’s not a lack of plot that’s the problem. There’s TOO MUCH plot. Guys, stop telling Hollywood you want more story in your blockbusters. They don’t get it. They think it just means adding more explanation. Each sequel has a BIGGER plot that overshadows the action by sheer magnitude.

I kind of dig the idea that the space program was really a government mission to investigate a crashed Cybertron ship on the moon. Just leave it at that. Don’t explain how Sam (Shia Labeouf) goes on job interviews making racist comments to Japanese stereotypes. Don’t have Charlotte (Frances McDormand) come in to reign in the Autobots until it’s too late. Don’t have Dylan Gold (Patrick Dempsey) explain… whatever it was he knew about. If it’s only about the robots, why apologize for that by contriving a long convoluted conspiracy plot? Is it guilt?

Of course Michael Bay introduces Sam’s new girlfriend Carly (Rosie Huntington-Whiteley) with an ass shot. Sam’s just used to having hot girlfriends now so he just complains about his job prospects and gender dynamics with disparate income levels. One of Sam’s little robot friends (either Brains or the other one) even comments on his last girlfriend, the mean one. Mom actually says, “What a gorgeous box” while a close-up of Huntington-Whitley is on screen. I mean, I’m not reading too much into this, am I? There was a possible hentai scene with Decepticon tentacles threatening her. Missed opportunity there.

There’s really not any action while all of this is going on. A few office machines turn into robots and the Autobots blow through some Iraqi roadblocks, but that’s just busy. It’s not really action. About an hour in there’s an okay freeway chase, but it’s totally derivative of the better freeway chase in Transformers 1 with the bus.

Finally the climactic battle goes on for about 55 minutes. That would be enough for sheer volume, if you’d gotten to it in 45 minutes. 90 minutes in, you’ve already burned that bridge. I still wasn’t engaged like in the first film. The tilted building is okay, like Inception with real world physics. Five minutes into that sequence, we see there are still people in the offices. Were they just trying to finish their work the whole time?

The IMAX does look better in the 2.35:1 ratio than the full frame IMAX sequences of Revenge of the Fallen. The 3-D cameras force it to remain steady. Even handheld shots are careful. But what really looks cool is the trailer to Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol. With a full IMAX sequence on the Burj Khalifa, that movie looks fantastic!

Last week, Shia LaBeouf dropped a bomb on us that was not Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps. While talking about the reason for Megan Fox‘s firing from the Transformers franchise, he inferred that Michael Bay might be just a teeny tiny eensy bit sexist. Crazy, I know. My monocle popped out when I read that.

Now, the fembot hired to replace Fox, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, is speaking out about her experience posing on car hoods for Bay (the man who is making her a star):

“I think what Shia was saying was that Michael loves women, and I think he films women in a very sensual way… We had great fun. I never feel uncomfortable with Michael. And if I do, I make sure I tell him. He’s always respects it.”

Given Rosie’s background with Victoria’s Secret, she’s pretty cool with letting the girls out. Who knows? Transformers: Dark Of The Moon may finally be our chance to see a hot chick deep throat drive shaft. We’ve all been waiting for it. (Cinema Blend)

That’s an exchange from my one act play: Man Who Gets Killed Talking To A Transformer. The sneak peak image below is from the upcoming Transformers: Dark of the Moon, starring Shia LaBeouf, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Patrick Dempsey. It’s a new, dizzying look at the Decepticon Shockwave, who’s working with Megatron on a crazy new scheme that’s bad news for humans. Y’know, the little fleshy guys that don’t turn into stuff.

In an interview, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura recently described Shockwave as “a ball of destruction, pulling whole skyscrapers down. He’s a messy guy to have in our world.” I hear he also doesn’t use a spoon when he eats pasta, and sauce gets all over the city. Very messy. Also, he kills a lot of people.

When I think Michael Bay, I think “human drama.” And my preconceived notions are nothing but confirmed as I watch this, the first clip from Transformers: The Dark of the Moon. Now you can watch it too, and imagine how awesome it would be with giant transforming robots beating the shit out of each other, and Shia LaBeouf, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Patrick Dempsey.

But, no matter how much you imagine it, there aren’t any robots to be seen here. Just Patrick Dempsey vaguely being a dick to Shia LaBeouf. Which sounds cool on paper, but I dunno. I kind of wanted there to be robots. (Comingsoon)

New ‘Transformers: Dark Of The Moon’ Poster Looks… Something

Various elements have combined to form the poster image for Transformers: Dark of the Moon below. You’ve got some boring humans, a nonsensical-looking Optimus Prime – is his hand some kind of giant laser wrench? – a few buildings post-explosions, and a two weird looking alien ships.

Put it together and you get… movie. Woo hoo.

Shia LeBeouf and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley star as apparently shocked humans in a movie where Autobots continue to fight Decepticons, destroying Earth while doing so. Honestly, I can’t imagine why they’re looking so shocked, since this sort of thing seems to happen quite a bit, at least to LeBeouf. Directed by Michael Bay, who promises to “roll out” of the series after this entry, Transformers: Dark of the Moon destroys Earth theaters on July 1, 2011. I recommend just renting this on Netflix instead, and if you want the IMAX experience, just sit close to the TV. (Vulture)

All hail our new robot overlords in Transformers: Dark of the Moon, the third installment in the blockbuster franchise. Same song, different verse as Autobots and Decepticons battle it out in Chicago over humans lying to Optimus Prime about what the found on the moon 40 years ago. (Just nod and smile.)

It’s looking like the Transformers are raising hell in another downtown. Couldn’t they find a nice farm or pasture to battle in? It would really cut down on the destruction they cause all the civilians.

Other observations:

Optimus Prime is a bit of a twirler
Bumblebee has gotten pretty good at parkour
Flying squirrel people are our last line of defense

God help us all.

Shocker: New ‘Transformers 3′ Images Feature Explosions

If you think Michael Bay movies are just mind-numbing explosion-fests, you’re totally right. At least, that’s what these screenshots from Transformers: Dark of the Moon seem to confirm. In the photos, you see a big explosion, which soldiers are running from, a slightly more subtle explosion, which Shia LaBeouf is running from, and a scene in which LaBeouf is protecting Rosie “Not Megan Fox” Huntington-Whiteley from — I’m guessing — an off-screen explosion.

I didn’t see Transformers 2, but my understanding is that all I missed were a bunch of racist transform-o-bots. However, the first Transformers movie focused a lot on the stupid boring humans, and these pictures show a bunch of stupid boring humans. So for the next batch of pictures, let’s see some sports cars that turn into ninjas or something.

The conspiracy is out! The teaser trailer for Michael Bay’s Transformers: Dark of the Moon has landed (puuuuuuun-riffic!) We get a nice moody build-up, but the basic gist is astronauts exploring the moon find an alien life form. I have a feeling Shia LaBeouf, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Josh Duhamel, and Tyrese then come in and save the day, but they don’t show that part yet. Way to keep us in suspense, Bay! You could have at least teased some bare Rosie shoulder.

Michael Bay sat down with a few reporters recently to present the Transformers 3 teaser. He also took the opportunity to talk about his new found love of 3D, his new leading lady, and his sh*tty sense of humor. And this guy’s a talker, so I’ll try to keep this as brief as possible.

On the new film versus Transformers 2:

“On the second movie we got burned. We had a writers strike, we had to agree on a story in three weeks, and then we knew they were going on strike. It was a fucked scenario all the way around, it wasn’t fair to the writer, it wasn’t fair to me, it wasn’t fair to anybody. It was still an entertaining movie, but I think we failed on certain aspects. What we did with this movie is I think we have a much better script, and we got back to basics. I think there’s some really cool action on this movie, there’s some very cool conspiracy, there’s great robot stuff in this that people were missing in the second one, you’ve got great robot conflict. So I’m excited about this movie.

It’s more serious. I got rid of the dorky comedy, I mean we’ve got two little characters, that’s it, but the dorkiness is not there. Dork-free Transformers. It’s much more serious. It’s still entertaining, it’s big looking. I think it’s much more compelling, what we did, how we funneled our action, what we’ve got our characters doing, they’ve got a lot more to do.”

On Rosie Hunginton-Whitely:

“I would never hire a model. ["Yeah right. - Ed.] I’ve shot plenty of the Victoria’s Secret stuff and they’ve been good clients of mine for years. She was very spunky and she has this cute English accent. She has a great head on her shoulders in terms of smart, intelligent, and well-spoken. And I just said to her “have you ever been interested in being an actress?” and she goes “yea.” And [the casting woman] came in, and she said, “I gotta tell you Michael…this girl can be a star.” So we looked at the tape, and showed Steven [Spielberg] the tape and everyone was really intrigued. We brought her on set with Shia [LaBeouf] and the crew, and we shot with her for six hours. We put her with an acting coach and I kept telling her to be herself. She did really well in the tests and Shia really liked her and she did a really good job. I saw her really improve, and she’s so sweet. It was good; I think it was a good change. I love her English accent.”

He’d also like to get the word out that the film was primarily shot on 3D:

“There is a right way to do it and a wrong way. I think, personally. If you want to do proper 3D it’s a $30 million price tag. You don’t to admit it, but that’s what it really is to do proper 3D. Studios will sometimes do it or $10 million, or $12 million. $30 million, in terms of the equipment, the crew. That camera equipment is really expensive to rent. And if you want to do dual eye-rendered robots, you got another 30% charge, because you got two eyes now, two different visual effects that have got to be blended. There’s more work on the visual effects shots. Does that make sense? We spent about seven months or eight months before the movie investigating all the conversion companies.

What I decided to do, in terms of my 3D, the only way I was gonna make a 3D schedule—what I did when I did my test is I shot film alongside video. We shot most of my close-ups with faces with anamorphic film, cause that stuff’s easier to convert and it’s just more beautiful than the digital. And then there’s stuff where it’s just not ready for primetime: it can’t really do slow-motion, it can’t be around giant dustballs, I mean you’re dealing with electronics here.”

He also goes on to say that this will probably be his final Transformers film. Until James Cameron invents a new film technology of course. (Collider)

Michael Bay is currently shooting Transformers 3 in Playa Vista, CA, and Just Jared managed to snag some pictures from the set. Let me set the scene so that you may fully understand the gravitas behind the stills. Shia LaBeouf, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, and Tyrese Gibson are being chased by an evil Decepticon who tips over a building. Oh the subtext! The building is clearly a metaphor for the Decepticon’s abusive father. I smell an Oscar. **Places lid on trashcan stuffed with a decomposing grouch**

After all, what better way to celebrate her impending objectification at the hands of Michael Bay than with an objectifying underwear ad/spank film? And based on her performance in the ad, I’m smelling Oscar! Wait, no. That’s smegma.

Last week we pondered whether Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, the Victoria’s Secret model with zero acting credibility, would be selected to fill the Megan Fox-shaped hole in all of our Transformers 3 hearts. Today we have the answer: duh.

Pending negotiations, Rosie will fill the role of semi-nude girl tinkering with a motor, and star opposite Shia LaBeouf, Josh Duhamel, and Tyrese Gibson. If she opts in, Rosie will be having her leg humped by either a miniature Decepticon or Shia LaBeouf within the next few weeks. (Deadline)

Meet Rosie Huntington-Whiteley. She’s a lithe Victoria’s Secret model, and rumors are she might be the replacement for Megan Fox in Transformers 3. Michael Bay no doubt met her while adding unnecessary explosions to the spots he directs for the lingerie brand. No telling yet if Rosie can act, but she forms a convincing fist in the above pic, and it’s not like acting is a crucial requirement on Bay sets. Breasts. Now those are mandatory.
