Ah, the joys of raising a haunted child. After moving into yet another new house, Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne just can’t shake those pesky ghosts. The international trailer for Insidious: Chapter 2 mostly shows us what we’ve already seen when Wilson and Byrne move the family into grandma’s house and pretty much ruin its resale value. Even in this market, murder houses are notoriously tough to unload.

When the first Insidious ended with a horrible, violent murder, we all knew that there was more trouble in store for America’s Most Haunted. The characters in the film somehow didn’t get that memo though, as the trailer for Insidious, Chapter 2 finds them trying to get on with their lives only to be surprised when an ass ton of ghosts descend on their grandma’s house in order to slam doors and dick around with the baby monitor.

It’s more cost-effective scares as more haunted happenings return us to The Further in this micro-budget sequel. I’m psyched but it’s not a good sign when you want to slap the characters based off the trailer.

Rose Byrne (panicked): It’s still happening!

Patrick Wilson: What is?

Rose Byrne: My yeast infection.

Patrick Wilson: ….

Rose Byrne: Ghosts, dummy!

Rose Byrne is an Australian actress. She plays Ellen Parsons in the FX show “Damages,” opposite American dramatic institution Glenn Close. Byrne has been in a relationship with Australian writer, director and actor Brendan Cowell for over four years (Boooo!). The couple maintained a long-distance relationship for much of their relationship, with work commitments meaning they were often on separate continents. This means he’s a better man than you.

A word from Rose: “I see myself more as a character actress than a celebrity.”

Keep that good head on your shoulders. When you discover you’re a celebrity you’ll probably want coke, or to kill a homeless person. Apparently it has something to do with power.

Bridesmaids isn’t through trying to convince you that it’s actually secretly funny. A new international trailer has begun to swim its way across the pond and this one plays to Jon Hamm‘s strengths… being a total dick to women.

In this trailer, we see Hamm do his careful best to dismiss Kristen Wiig after a night of hot, steamy, bra-on sex (Hollywood’s favorite kind). But we shouldn’t rush to judge. Perhaps he just needs to fart really badly. Sometimes that happens to fellas. Especially if they aren’t careful about what they eat the night before. Damn you, Nestle Flipz!!

The post SXSW Review: ‘Bridesmaids’ Work Print appeared first on Screen Junkies.

]]>
Bridesmaids played well at SXSW, but I wasn’t into it. It’s actually the first movie of the festival I haven’t liked, so it probably feels like a harsher letdown.

It opens funny with Annie (Kristin Wiig) having outrageous sex with Ted (Jon Hamm). Annie speaks in the stream of consciousness rambling that Wiig peppers with humor each time she adds a phrase. Once her best friend Lillian (Maya Rudolph) gets engaged, it becomes the typical wedding movie.

All the other bridesmaids are contrived one-dimensional types. Rita (Wendi McLendon-Covey) complains about her obnoxious sons and husband. Becca (Ellie Kemper) is the lovey dovey newlywed. Megan is a butch type. Helen (Rose Byrne) is just so perfect it drives Annie crazy.

Wiig pretty much stops doing the Kristin Wiig thing in order to serve a generic, clichéd plot. She does a dance when Officer Rhodes pulls her over but stops the random phrases and tones down the physicality, so you don’t get a Kristin Wiig movie after all.

The big problem with the premise is that jealousy is not funny. Helen outshines Annie’s wedding plans and the film follows the same plot as all “outrageous wedding” movies. At the engagement toast, the dress fittings, the bachelorette party and bridal shower, Helen comes up with crazy plans that take over Annie’s sincere ones.

Helen’s manipulative usurping isn’t funny though. She has connections to a fancy dress shop. She wants to take the girls to Las Vegas. She has a fancy mansion with a fondue fountain. The only joke is that Annie is insecure that Helen’s more superficially impressive than she is.

Bridesmaids might coast if it was just generic, but it drags out so long it forces you to work it out. Directo Paul Feig said that “work print” only meant they had color timing and sound issues to polish. He should really consider taking 30 minutes out, because there’s so much plot. At a certain point you realize while Annie’s working out her relationship with Office Rhodes, hey, they still have to have a wedding to wrap this sucker up.

I like Kristin Wiig a lot. I think her physicality is phenomenal and her attitude is sweet. She doesn’t seem to make jokes at anyone’s expense. She just enjoys being silly. Bridesmaids doesn’t feel like her, and she wrote it herself!

The post SXSW: ‘Insidious’ Preview appeared first on Screen Junkies.

SXSW offered a first look at the premiere of the new James Wan/Leigh Whannell film Insidious. My first thoughts were a bit of self-reflection. I have to appreciate horror movies on a different level than the target audience. I’m not scared by ghosts and monsters and slasher killers. I can appreciate it as a story, and often some deep fantasy, but I’m not scared. Insidious has enough that should scare the horror believers and creates an in-depth mythology that objective viewers like me can respect.

Renee (Rose Byrn) and Josh (Patrick Wilson) move into a new house where apparitions pop up behind windows and push books off the shelves. Their son Dalton falls into a coma. That’s a taboo plot twist that Hollywood horror wouldn’t allow. The visions get stronger and Renee experiences them the most.

The scares at this point are solid. You see enough unsettling disturbances, some grinning twins or a bloody handprint on the sheets, to get your Shining on. Here is where the film gets smart though. They move out of the house. Josh may be skeptical but he’s willing to do it for Renee’s well being.

Of course, it wasn’t the house, it was the family. In the new house, the ghosts get more interactive. A ghostly child actually makes Renee play hide and seek. Josh’s mom Lorraine (Barbara Hershey) calls a spiritual advisor, Elise (Lin Shaye) to help. That’s when the mythology gets deep.

Elise explains astral projection to create a really mature, perceptive view of the supernatural. Leigh Whannell’s script incorporates spiritual powers and philosophy that even casual readers of pop metaphysics would appreciate. Elise and her assistants Tucker (Angus Sampson) and Specs (Leigh Whannell) can’t stop the other world from causing trouble so the pace builds as the mythology develops.

Elise introduces the concept of The Further, which the film explores as a new vision of the world beyond our own. It’s more dreamlike than Nightmare on Elm Street and full of unsettling images and sound. The characters aren’t passive. Renee and Josh get hands on to save their son. Josh has to be the nay sayer but they make him reasonable.

I was most interested when the film kicked into its spiritual gear, but the whole film is well done. James Wan shoots the houses so that every angle on a room or staircase makes it look completely different. He reveals the disturbing elements in effective tracking shots, obscuring some things and playing with screen space. It’s not just jump scares.

I was invested in the otherworldly adventure of Insidious, which is definitely more epic than the usual haunted house story. I would look forward to further adventures in The Further.

When I first wrote about Insidious, my main question was ‘Why does that ghost look like a cross-dressing Michael Myers?’ This new trailer doesn’t reveal that answer. It only poses more questions. It seems as if there are multiple g-g-g-g-GHOSTS!!! ***leaves Wookie Johnson-shaped hole in wall while fleeing***

I’m told that the film, though formulaic, really delivers on scares. To me, it looks like a really scary version of “Ghosthunters,” which could be a cool premise. Noticing strange goings-on, concerned parents of a creepy kid hire paranormal investigators, only to discover it’s not their house that’s haunted but their son. Why they don’t leave the kid in the supermarket parking lot a few towns over is beyond me.

The movie stars Rose Byrne, Patrick Wilson, Barbara Hershey, and apparently the ghost of Darth Maul. Good to see him working again.

Fox kept us waiting with another Facebook debacle, but our patience has paid off. Finally, a good look at the swinging 60′s of X-Men: First Class. Not to mention the little outfits January Jones was convinced to slip into.

X-Men: First Class takes us back to the early days of the X-Men where you should pretty much forget everything you saw in the other movies. Beast and Mystique are kids, Wolverine is nowhere in sight, and your girlfriend wants to do it with Professor X now. Is that the Brave New World that Charles Xavier dreams about?

Judd Apatow’s first foray into “you go, girl!,” comedy Bridesmaids has its first trailer and it looks… okay. Kristen Wiig has proven her comedic chops with her roles in The 40-Year Old Virgin and MacGruber and by making repetitive noises on “SNL.” I’m happy to see her stepping into the lead.

The supporting cast looks funny too. You’ve got the fat one, the neurotic one, the horny one, and the bitch. Just like at your office. More importantly though, this trailer features what every trailer should — tuxedo-clad yawning puppies. Can we re-do the DGA Awards?

We won’t have to wait much longer to see Rose Byrne get chased around by a ghost that looks like a cross-dressing Michael Myers. Saw director James Wan is back in the horror game after taking a few years off. He’s re-teamed with Leigh Whannell for Insidious, a haunted house story about a couple who fight to prevent evil spirits from trapping their comatose child in a realm called The Further.

The film will open April 1st after positive festival reactions. Many critics were abuzz about Rose Byrne and Patrick Wilson‘s portrayal of the parents. I don’t really know if that ghost is supposed to be scary. I’m getting more of a Bubbe vibe than cursed succubus that will drag your first-born to an eternity of Detroit Hell. (Coming Soon)

‘Get Him To The Greek’ Actress Rose Byrne http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/get-him-to-the-greek-actress-rose-byrne/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/get-him-to-the-greek-actress-rose-byrne/#comments Thu, 03 Jun 2010 17:58:00 +0000 Defy Media Rose Byrne is an Australian actress. She plays Ellen Parsons in the FX show "Damages," opposite American dramatic institution Glenn Close. Byrne has been in a relationship with Australian writer, director and actor Brendan Cowell for over four years (Boooo!). The couple maintained a long-distance relationship for much of their relationship, with work commitments meaning they were often on separate continents. This means he's a better man than you. A word from Rose: "I see myself more as a character actress than a celebrity."Keep that good head on your shoulders. When you discover you're a celebrity you'll probably want coke, or to kill a homeless person. Apparently it has something to do with power. More pics of professional Rose after the jump.

‘Get Him To The Greek’ Trailer Rocks Hard http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/get-him-to-the-greek-trailer-rocks-hard/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/get-him-to-the-greek-trailer-rocks-hard/#comments Wed, 30 Nov -0001 00:00:00 +0000 The first trailer for Get Him To The Greek just hit the Interwebz, and I'll be damned if Nicholas Stoller hasn't done it again. The director and writer of the highly enjoyable Forgetting Sarah Marshall brings back eccentric, hyper-sexual rocker Aldous Snow for a whimsical romp across the pond from Foggy London Town to sunny Los Angeles. Jonah Hill plays record label intern Aaron Green who gets the assignment from big boss P. Diddy to escort Aldous Snow (Russell Brand) to the Greek Theater in L.A. for the first-stop of his comeback tour. Wackiness ensues, with a plethora of sex, drugs, rock & roll, and crusty vomit on The Today Show with Meredith Vieira. Stoller delivered a perfect mix of laughs and heart in Sarah Marshall, and I have no doubt he'll add the same touch to this one. And vomit, of course. Check out the trailer after the jump. Get Him To The Greek blows the roof off theaters June 4, 2010.
