Ron Perlman Becomes Hellboy Once Again, For An Awesome Reason

For those who have been flooding Guillermo del Toro with letters regarding a third Hellboy installment, I’ve got some bittersweet news for you: You’ve been bested by a six year-old. That‘s the bitter.

The sweet is that the boy, Zachary is a beneficiary of the Make-A-Wish foundation, and his request was twofold: To meet Hellboy and become Hellboy.

Which is totally badass.

He got to do both as Ron Perlman, the man behind the mask, got together with the special effects and makeup folks, sat for four hours, and gave the kid what he wanted. It wasn’t made public what Zachary’s ailment is, but regardless of that info, this is a heartwarming story of someone in Hollywood being nice for a change.

Don’t get used to it.

Burning Off Kyle’s Tattoo

Popular legend holds that if you leave a 1%er motorcycle club they want your tattoos back. According to Sons of Anarchy, you can either get them burned off or cut off. Kyle, the exiled member of SAMCRO responsible for Opie’s incarceration opted for the former. In one of the most brutal scenes ever aired on basic cable, we got to see him hang from chains while the tattoo was burned off with a blowtorch.

AJ Weston’s Stoic Death

Henry Rollins could put on a pink prom dress and read scenes from Steel Magnolias and still look tough. On SOA he plays an open white nationalist opponent of SAMCRO. Before SAMCRO executes him, AJ Weston says a touching goodbye to his son. This isn’t just bad ass, it also lends an interesting complexity to a thoroughly detestable character, humanizing even the most inhuman man.

Anyone who’s seen The Godfather knows that even the most hardened criminals hesitate before offing the pigs. Double down on that when it comes to federal agents. But Agent June Stahl went over the line one too many times and paid the price in the season three finale. Most of us spent the first three seasons wondering why no one thought to put her out of her misery.

Or, in the case of Sons of Anarchy, you have early credits that are polar opposites of the characters they play now. Before joining Sam Crow, Charlie Hunnam was a member of a very different gang when he played Nathan Maloney on the hit drama Queer as Folk.

With hundreds of credits to his name, Ron Perlman has appeared in all manner of film, television, and theater roles. But only one of these roles required him to dress like a lion. Before he was Clay, he was a big hit on television as Beauty and the Beast‘s Vincent, the love interest to Linda Hamilton. And these were back in the days when Hamilton was really hot, so you know Garfield must have had a really charming personality.

Of course, everyone remembers Katey Sagal as the undomesticated housewife Peggy Bundy on Married With Children, but it’s still almost hard to believe. Sagal’s portrays the characters as polar opposites, with one likely to burn the roast and the other to burn a cigarette out on your face.

9 Actors Who Were Born To Play Frankenstein

One of the 621 Frankenstein movies that are currently in development found itself a director in Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum, Real Steel), which is great. Every film needs a director. However, this announcement begs the question, “Who will play Frankenstein’s monster (let’s just call him Frankenstein and not be all up-our-own-ass about the semantics) in the new project?”

Well, pretty much anyone can portray Frankenstein. I could get a Golden Globe nod for my performance if the director just gave me three Xanax, a 1″ lift in my right shoe, and a burn on the roof of my mouth with a Bagel Bite just out of the oven. So with the playing field being equal, it comes down to looks.

“What has two thumbs and sort of looks like Frankenstein? These guys!”

Truthfully, though, I wouldn’t be surprised if Trejo was missing a thumb.

9. Matt Dillon

He may be in a tie with #8 for the best-looking guy on this list, but still Frankenstein-esque. He also speaks with a deep enough voice that when I’m watching Wild Things while writing (which is most days), I sometimes get startled and need to look up to reassure myself that Denise Richards and Neve Campbell aren’t having a threeway with Frankenstein, because that would just drive me up the wall with sexiness.

8. David Boreanz

Bones could be Frankenstein. I’m aware that Bones is actually the girl on the show of the same name, but it’s just easier for me if I call everyone on that show Bones, as it prevents me from having to learn anything about the show Bones.

7. Danny Trejo

Danny Trejo looks like he has been stitched together a la Frankenstein, complete with baseball glove-type skin. I don’t think Frankenstein had a tattoo on his chest, but the news of Levy’s attachment doesn’t say when the film is set. 2011 Frankenstein in Williamsburg, Brooklyn could totally have a chest tattoo.

See A Romantic New Clip From 'Drive'

Of all the stuff getting promoted at Comic-Con, the thing I’m personally most excited about is Nicolas Winding Refn‘s Drive. Starring a cool Ryan Gosling, a beautiful Carey Mulligan, an evil Albert Brooks, and more adjective-matched stars, it looks to be an arthouse action movie to give Tarantino a run for his money.

This trailer, fortunately, has done nothing to make my level of anticipation decrease. There are some cool automotive stunts, and glimpses at the aforementioned stars, along with Christina Hendricks, Bryan Cranston, and Ron Perlman. I can’t wait to drive (my Segway) to my local theater to watch Drive!

Jax Got A Haircut For ‘Sons Of Anarchy’ Season 4 Promo

It doesn’t offer up much, but it looks like the Teller family is happy to have baby Abel back, and Jax cut off his golden locks. Could the show be turning over a new leaf? Are we to expect no more rape, intravenous drug-taking, or skull stomping? Oh no wait, Clay’s brandishing a shot gun. Good to see the Sons haven’t gotten soft. I never clocked them as Red Hot Chili Pepper fans though.

Who am I kidding? EVERYONE loves RHCP.

Blood Spilled All Over The Place In ‘Conan’ Red Band Trailer

There’s a new red band trailer for Conan online and there is just blood all over the place now. Seriously. We’re gonna need to call Harvey Keitel.

Any fears that this film would not be R-rated can now be stabbed through the neck with a sword and then twisted so that blood and throat shards splash outward in a dramatic fashion that times well with a heavy metal dude screaming about how he doesn’t take any crap. (IGN)

I understand that Conan The Barbarian is a complete and total badass. Poin taken. However, in the newly released poster below, the man is shirtless, completely surrounded be armored dudes with spears and swords, plus arrows are flying his way. Yet, the only scratch I can see is a tiny little one near his waistline. I’ll believe that the guy can murder all these assholes and their friends & families in one afternoon, but one tiny cut? I assume his frowny-face is because he does not have a Spongebob Band-Aid for his barely noticeable boo-boo.

Don’t Look At These New ‘Drive’ Photos If You’re Driving

The producers of the Nicolas Winding Refn‘s Drive are rolling out a fair amount of promotional material in advance of its upcoming Cannes premiere. There was the footage from a few days ago, and now a Cannes press kit that contains these photos (and more). None of which you should even be reading about if you are currently behind the wheel of an automobile of any kind. Driving is a privilege, not a right.

Now, for all of you not driving, you’ll notice that these photos have our first look at Albert Brooks, Christina Hendricks, Ron Perlman, and Bryan Cranston in the movie, in addition to star Ryan Gosling. So if you previously were unaware of what they looked like, you’re welcome. (The Playlist)

See A Clip From ‘Drive’ Before Speeding Away Dramatically

The car chase movie is experiencing something of a resurgence, with Fast Five actually getting reviews that resemble being in the same general area as “good.” But we’re still a ways off from the 60s and 70s, when true artists like John Frankenheimer, Walter Hill, William Friedkin, and Sam Peckinpah made car chase movies that were hard-boiled, stylish, and CGI-free.

Well, judging from this clip from Driven, which you can watch here, Nicolas Winding Refn is doing his part to bring back the cool car chase movie. And it has reasons to get excited in front of the camera, too: Drive stars Ryan Gosling, along with Carey Mulligan, Albert Brooks, Bryan Cranston, Christina Hendricks and Ron Perlman. So, even if this clip was terrible, I’d still be there. It isn’t terrible though.

From film, to television, to video games, Ron Perlman has done it all. And he’s done it all with a scowl! Seriously, he’s a great actor, but he’s also the scowliest son of a bitch in Hollywood. Well, hopefully this list of Ron Perlman‘s nine greatest scowls will turn that frown upside-down.

Vincent – “Beauty and the Beast” (1987)

Jesus, I forgot this show even existed. The 80′s were a crazy time, and cocaine was a hell of a drug. Seriously, who the hell approved a network drama featuring a guy dressed up like a lion with Downs? At any rate, despite the heavy makeup, Ron’s trademark scowl comes shining through.

One – The City of Lost Children (1995)

Ron Perlman’s role in the French film, The City of Lost Children, proves that the scowl breaks right through the language barrier.

Sayer of the Law – The Island of Dr. Moreau (1996)

Yet another example of Perlman’s scowl having to fight its way through a pund of makeup, The Island of Dr. Moreau also featured noted scowler Marlon Brando. All though by that time, Brando was so overweight, he was showing a lot more jowl than scowl.

Johner – Alien: Resurrection (1997)

If I had to fight an army of aliens with a dwarf tied to my back, I’d be scowling too. Not to mention that awful Winona Ryder cyborg was constantly running her yap.

Koulikov – Enemy at the Gates (2001)

If there was ever a reason to scowl, the Battle of Stalingrad was it. With nearly two-million people killed, it makes sense that there wasn’t a lot of smiling going on. As such, Perlman was perfect for the role.

Reman Viceroy Vkruk – Star Trek: Nemesis (2002)

Honestly, other than the scowl, there’s no way you would guess that Ron Perlman is under that mask. Why the hell would you higher a star to play a role like that. You might as well grab a day laborer from the Home Depot parking lot.

Hellboy – Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008)

Jesus, I’m beginning to think that Perlman is a modern day Lon Chaney.

Clarence ‘Clay’ Morrow -”Sons of Anarchy” (2008)

It makes sense that Perlman would be scowling while on the set of “Son’s of Anarchy.” Chances are Kurt Sutter just called him a c*nt for no apparent reason.

Felson – Season of the Witch (2010)

We saved the best for last, and by best, I mean worst. Season of the Witch bombed with the critics and at the box office. But it’s failure can not be chalked up to a lack of scowling.

First Look At ‘Conan’ Villain “Baldar” Zym

Conan The Barbarian is turning into some kind of ancient hippie fest. First we see a trailer that looks like a series of pot smoke visions. Now we get a balding, long-haired villain with a graying ponytail. What’s next? Does Conan travel around in a van?

Below is the pic of Khalar Zym in the remake of Conan The Barbarian, directed by Marcus Nispel (“The Texas Chainsaw Massacre“). That’s Stephen Lang (Avatar) looking, perhaps, a little ticked off about something. Maybe it’s cause Zym takes no pleasure in killing Conan’s family and destroying his village. An ancient Middle Eastern warlord’s gotta do what an ancient Middle Eastern warlord’s gotta do. Nothing personal, just business.

The film slaughters its way into 3D theaters August 19th, along with stars Jason Mamao (“Stargate: Atlantis”), Ron Perlman and Rose McGowan. (Latino Review)

‘Conan The Barbarian’ Is Smokin’ In Teaser Trailer

The teaser trailer for Conan The Barbarian is online and it’s smokin’. No, not in a The Mask kind of way, with the Tex Avery impressions and the “Cuban Pete.” I just mean there’s literally a lot of smoke in the trailer for some reason. Nothing says “from an ancient time” like “here is a shit-load of smoke.”

Also featured: some gray dudes, a hot slave lady, and a nice helping of sound effects from the “Battles, Magic, and Swordplay: Movie Sound Effects Library.” Seriously, though, the trailer did pique my curiosity, and I’m looking forward to seeing more. Hopefully with less smoke and more folks. Topless folks, that is.

Conan The Barbarian is directed by Marcus Nispel (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre), and stars Jason “Tempted” Momoa as the non-Arnold barbarian. The cast also includes Ron Perlman, Rose McGowan, and Stephen Lang. The film brutally invades theaters August 19th in 3D. (Collider)

Jax seems a bit down after the events of last year, but that’s nothing gunfights, fistfights, and burying a guy in the sand up to his neck and then running his face over can’t fix. ‘Bout time we see Jason Momoa causing pain as Conan the Barbarian. The first pic released showed him, what looked like, smelling a fart, completely not covered in someone else’s blood. I’m not sure why water is spraying at him in the above pic, but my guess is one of those barrels they place on the side of the highway clipped him while he was trying to make the exit, and he had to lay the smackdown. If this movie is about Conan battling an army of road barricades it’s going to be awesome. (/Film)

Ron Perlman is Conan’s Papa, Not Mickey Rourke

When it was first reported that Mickey Rourke was joining Marcus Nispel‘s Conan remake, I was skeptical. The project just seemed to be too much in the B movie realm for Rourke. Also, it must be impossible to insure your film when you have Mickey Rourke and swords on set. But then I just figured that it was a cocaine-based decision and the money was too good to pass up. Sorry Eric Roberts, but Mickey Rourke has rubber cement habit to support.

Since that report, Rourke has dropped out in favor of Gods of War. Hellboy and Season of the Witch star Ron Perlman has stepped in to play Corin in his stead and it seems like a much better fit. Also note that Rachel Nichols and Said Taghmaoui (both of GI Joe) are rounding out the cast. Unless false reports pop up saying that Sir Richard Attenborough is circling the project, we can assume that the film is cast and the universe is balanced once again. (Vulture)

Witness Nic Cage’s Flowing Locks in ‘Season Of The Witch’ Trailer

Not to be confused with the crappy Halloween sequel of the same name, Season Of The Witch is a new gothic, thriller starring Sir Nicolas Cage and Ron Perlman. The large-headed duo portray knights on a mission to bring a violent witch to an abbey for dewitchification and the witch is all like, "No. No. No." It’s the Middle Ages equivalent of bringing Amy Winehouse to rehab.
