Did I just timewarp back to 1995, or is this a brand new romantic comedy starring Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts? Alas, time travel isn’t real, and so it’s sadly just a regular ol’ brand new romcom from this very year, 2o11. Larry Crowne, about a happy go lucky (read: seemingly a little dumb?) man, played by Hanks, who’s fired from his job for lacking a college degree. Who should turn out to be his junior college speech professor but the queen of big smiles and winning laughs herself, J. Robz? Also, he rides a scooter and acts excited. It looks… well it looks like exactly what I just described. Larry Crowne is directed by Hanks and will invade theaters and your hearts July 1st.

A female driven romantic comedy produced by Judd Apatow? Is hell freezing over? Is it 2012 yet? No, it’s just time for Bridesmaids, a new film written by and starring SNL’s Kristin Wiig to be unleashed upon us all. Are we ready? I think so. The pedigree, from writer/actor Wiig, to Maya Rudolph, Rose Byrne, Ellie Kemper “The Office“), Wendy McLendon-Covey (“Reno 911“), and even Jon Hamm, is strong, and the film’s been getting great reviews in advanced screenings. The poster, below, looks like primed and ready to mop the floor with Valentine’s Day, Bride Wars, Leap Year, or any other steaming pile of romcom bullshit that came out in the last five years. ‘Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus’, This Movie Is From Planet Terrible

Every day, women around the world are demanding a film adaptation of Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus. Since it was published in 1992, there have been no romantic comedies dealing with the many differences between men and women. It’s a Hollywood taboo to point out that men aren’t in touch with their emotions and women might be attracted to the handsome douchebag, but Mr. Right is really the nice guy you’ve been working with at the lawfirm this entire time. Finally, Hollywood’s gender issues wall will come tumbling down.

Summit “Twilight Forever” Entertainment hired the writer/director team of Harry Elfont and Deborah Kaplan (Leap Year, Made of Honor) to adapt John Gray’s book into what’s sure to be yet another unwatchable romantic comedy. It probably won’t even be a bromantic comedy. Or a blowmantic comedy, which is like a romantic comedy, only with 2 or 3 awesome BJ scenes. I guess that could also be referring to a romantic comedy about cocaine. No matter how you alter the words of the genre, this has “steer clear” written all over it. I’m giving it no stars, and it hasn’t even been written yet. (Deadline)

Stop the Presses: Jennifer Aniston to Star in Romantic Comedy

Shocking news! Jennifer Aniston has decided to break the mold and step out of her comfort zone by taking on a role in a romantic comedy. Wanderlust, which was acquired by Universal Pictures, will be produced by Judd Apatow and will costar Apatow regular Paul Rudd.

Aniston and Rudd will play a married couple trying to escape the trappings of the city life for a counterculture existence.

Sounds amazing!

As if one groundbreaking role wasn’t enough, Aniston has also signed on to star in New Line Cinema’s Horrible Bosses, which is no doubt a dark psychological thriller. Either that, or another sh*tty comedy. (Deadline)
