First ‘RoboCop’ Set Pics Show Off The New Suit, Orthopedic Shoes

The new face of justice is here and it looks like something Will.I.Am might wear. Spy photos from the set of the RoboCop remake’s first day of shooting made their way online over the weekend revealing Joel Kinnaman in the new costume. The immediate nerd reaction was appropriately nerdy with observations that it looks like Batman crossed with Iron Man. Which actually sounds pretty awesome. Not sure what all of the complaints are about, especially considering that this is a spy pic and we have no idea what Robo will look like after the post-effects process.

I ain’t mad at it. Definitely looks better than Phoenix Jones or M.A.N.T.I.S. which really was a legitimate fear. It’s best we hold judgement until we see a Photoshop of him riding a unicorn.

We knew things must have been bad when producers of RoboCop hired Michael Keaton to play the robot’s enemy. But we didn’t know just how bad.

Now their just hiring everyday people for the film like Gary Oldman’s manager, for instance. Douglas Urbanski has been cast as the mayor of Detroit, alongside his client who is also starring in the film. If he decides to turn down the role, there are reports that Michael Keaton’s manager is more than interested. (THR)

Batman vs. RoboCop! BATMAN VS. ROBOCOP!!

Michael Keaton has been set to play the role of Raymond Sellars in the MGM/Columbia Pictures’ RoboCop remake. Sellars is the CEO of the corporation that builds RoboCop, a role that Hugh Laurie was expected to play until he dropped out before consummating a deal. The film, a re-imagining of the 1987 Paul Verhoeven cult classic, is scheduled to begin shooting next month. RoboCop will be released on August 9, 2013. (Deadline)

Pardon my excitement. I know this isn’t necessarily great news for the film, but it is the closest we’ll get to seeing Batman fight RoboCop on the big screen.

Jose Padilha Is Having A Bitch Of A Time Remaking ‘RoboCop’

After years of money woes and mismanagement issues, MGM aren’t the most well-liked studio around. So you’d think they’d want to not act like total dicks their whole lives. Apparantly Jose Padilha is getting a lot of pushback from the studio while trying to tell a story about a cop who is also a robot.

Padilha’s close friend and fellow Brazilian filmmaker Fernando Meirelles (‘City of God,’ ’360′) spoke recently to South American web site Cinemacom Rapadura and revealed some details from conversations he’s had with Padilha about the ‘RoboCop’ reboot:

I talked to José Padilha for a week by phone. He will begin filming Robocop. He is saying that it is the worst experience. For every 10 ideas he has, 9 are cut. Whatever he wants, he has to fight. “This is hell here,” he told me. “The film will be good, but I never suffered so much and do not want to do it again.” He is bitter, but it’s a fighter.

Now keep in mind two things. 1) These are not direct quotes from Padilha, but quotes relayed by a friend. 2) The article was written in Portuguese and the quotes were translated into English. That said, even if the words to match perfectly, the sentiment is most definitely there. Jose Padilha is having a tough time. [ScreenCrush]

It sucks that this has been such a hard process for both the studio and Padilha. I’m sure all parties have the best of intentions and merely want to bring robotic copping to the screen in the best way possible.

Hugh Laurie To Be The Bad Guy In ‘Robocop’ Remake

Hugh Laurie is most famous to American audiences for playing the lovably cranky medical genius Dr. House on House. But now it looks like he’s going to dial down the lovability and dial up the villainy as “the CEO of Omni Corp” in the upcoming reboot of the Robocop franchise – MGM has entered negotiations with Laurie to get him into the movie.

For those of you who haven’t committed the original Robocop to memory – first of all, what’s wrong with you? But also, the CEO of Omni Corp (the evil corporation of the movie) would appear to be an analogue to Ronny Cox’s character in the original movie. And if the remake goes in a similar direction, you can expect Laurie to be just one of many scoundrels who Robocop gets to blast into oblivion.

Assuming that Laurie and MGM reach an agreement, he’ll be joining a pretty impressive cast that includes Joel Kinnaman as Robocop, Abbie Cornish as Robocop’s wife, Samuel L. Jackson as some kind of media figure (media satire is a big part of the original movie), and Gary Oldman as the scientist who brings Robocop to life. (The AV Club)

‘Robocop’ Reboot Release Reiterated

So that Robocop remake isn’t dead after all. After a few stalled attempts, MGM has finally set a release date: August 9, 2013. So be sure not to schedule any TRON-themed parties for that weekend, you don’t want to have a conflict. There’s even a director and star attached – Elite Squad‘s Jose Padilha in the director’s chair and star of the AMC original series The Killing Joel Kinnaman as the chin underneath all the armor and cool guns.

The original Robocop came out in 1987 and spawned 2 sequels, a TV series, millions of dollars in merchandising, and at least one bizarre professional wrestling appearance, so it‘s easy to see why the studio has the confidence to give this a summer release. (The Playlist)

Russell Crowe Confirms Interest In Darren Aronofsky’s ‘Noah’

Last week there was news that Darren Aronofsky was interested in casting Russell Crowe and Liam Neeson for his wet n’ wild Bible epic, Noah. Now, Crowe has confirmed that but in order to impress Darren, he’s had to deny any involvement with the remake of Robocop. Poor Officer Murphy. Hasn’t he been shot down enough?

Crowe got on the Twitter to respond to a MovieWeb tweet that Aronofsky was “eyeing” him for the role with a “eyeing him right back…Liam’s eyeing both of us…and Paramount are eyeing us all, including you. Whole lot of eyeing.” Jeez. Get a room, you three.

Now that you’ve had time to wipe the image of a Neeson-Aronofsky-Crowe menage out of your minds, we can get on to Roboc — need another minute? ….

Okay, now we can get back to Robocop. Despite reports, Crowe denied any involvement with that project after flatly answering no to inquiries from fans. You may remember that Aronofsky was once attached to the remake but the deal didn’t pan out. Too bad too. ‘Robocop’ Reboot Hires Non-Cyborg Writer Josh Zetumer

Like Robocop‘s one-man mission to eliminate crime in Detroit, relativel unknown writer Josh Zetumer has also been given a gargantuan task: write a new version of the it’s-exactly-perfect-as-it-is film Robocop. Lucky for Zetumer, if he does a bad job, he would only get attacked by critics and fanboys, who rarely carry guns. Samurai swords, that’s more likely.

MGM has hired Zetumer to pen their Robocop reboot, to be helmed by gritty Brazilian filmmaker Jose Padilha (Elite Squad). Zetumer’s credits include a draft of a Dune movie, a draft of Bourne 4, and a draft of a draft of a rewrite of something else big, I’m sure. However, he’s never been given an on-screen credit. Because of this, maybe MGM will insist on putting him into a robot body that will allow him to write stronger and faster than ever before. Nothing gives a writer more confidence than becoming a cyborg. (/Film)

‘Robocop’ Remake Is Officially Dead

I’m sad to report that those of us waiting to see a poignant, arthouse remake of a film about a part robot, part human cop who walks through walls and fights cyber-ninjas are to be left wanting. Darren Aronofsky‘s long-in-the-works, inexplicable remake of Robocop has officially been scrapped. The collapse of the project was came about for two reasons: MGM‘s money problems, and Darren Aronofsky‘s realizing that he is Darren Aronofsky. (Moviehole)

Aronofsky Back on ‘Robocop’, Sam Worthington May Star

Last we heard, Darren Aronofsky had decided to walk from the troubled Robocop remake due to his unwillingness to present the film in gimmicky 3D. It appears that he and the cash-strapped MGM have worked something out and he’s ready to create the future of law enforcement according to our source. An insider at Digital Dimension has confirmed their company has been conducting visual effects tests and have received a great deal of feedback from Aronofsky. Word is that he "just loves the stuff."

Our tipster also made mention that Sam Worthington is very likely to fill the role of Officer Murphy. It’s his role to lose from what we’ve been told. Of course, Worthington’s schedule is jam-packed with the adaptations of Dan Dare and The Last Days of American Crime and there’s no official word when Robocop will ramp up. Though it is expected that Aronofsky is deciding between that or Serena with hot mom Angelina Jolie as his next project. We’ll keep you posted.
