Robert Redford Unfrozen For ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ Role

Robert Redford (or Big Red Dog, as he prefers to never be called) is in talks to join Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Deadline reports he’s being looked to to play a senior leadership role at S.H.I.E.L.D., the agency run by Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury. You need an actor with that weight to play the man Powers Boothe answers to.

What remains unclear is whether or not the character has some link to Chris Evan’s Steve Rogers before he was frozen in a block of ice and perfectly preserved for sixty-plus years. I’m talking about Rogers here. Though Redford looks amazingly maintained, no one’s insinuating he’s perfectly preserved.

Brit Marling has risen triumphant where Katie Holmes had failed — she survived being pursued by Tom Cruise. Last week, the breakout star of Another Earth was being courted by some big name talent. Cruise wanted her to co-star in One Shot, and Steven Soderbergh was after her to appear in Magic Mike, the Channing Tatum/Alex Pettyfer male-stripper movie. However, it’s Robert Redford who won her over.

Marling is now in talks for the lead female role in Redford’s next directorial debut, The Company You Keep. As previously reported, the movie stars Shia LaBeouf as an ambitious young reporter seeking to out Redford’s former Weather Underground member. There aren’t any real details about Marling’s character but at least she won’t be required to stuff dollar bills into Channing Tatum‘s waistline. Seems like a wise career choice. (Variety)

Shia LaBeouf And Robert Redford Bridge The Generation Gap For ‘The Company You Keep’

The thriller The Company You Keep just got a big dose of “multigenerational” with the addition of youngster Shia LaBeouf and oldster Robert Redford, who will also be taking on directing duties for the project.

Shia will play a young journalist who tracks down an aging fugitive revolutionary, played by Redford. The film will begin production in Vancouver in September, which is fortunate, because Vancouver is probably really nice that time of year.

The script is a Lem Dobbs adaptation of a Neil Gordon novel of the same name.

LaBeouf has certainly made the most of his-post Transformers time, signing up for a handful of prestige projects, the most notable being The Wettest County in the World, which also features Mia Wasikowska, Gary Oldman, and Tom Hardy. Meanwhile, Redford will be returning to his baseball wheelhouse playing Branch Rickey in an untitled study of Rickey’s relationship with Jackie Robinson.

Robert Redford and Nick Nolte could be teaming up to make the blondest, wrinkliest film of all time. Sundance‘s big poppa has shown interest in adapting Bill Bryson’s “A Walk in the Woods,” and would like Nolte to co-star. Based on the true story, Redford would play Bryson, an American who returns home to walk the Appalachian Trail after twenty years abroad. Nolte will portray an old friend who joins him. It’s being described as Into The Wild, you know, but funny.

I can see it. I bet it will be funny. Redford and Nolte come upon a group of hippies camping and Nolte absorbs all of their highs by placing his hands on their foreheads and chanting. Then they worship him as their new god. Camera cuts to Redford who says, “Man, I have been gone awhile.” (LA Times)

Robert Redford Is Starring In A Baseball Period Piece…Again

We get it, Robert Redford. You’re wholesome. Geez.

Mr. Americana has signed on to play Branch Rickey, the Brooklyn Dodgers exec that orchestrated the groundbreaking signing of Jackie Robinson, the first black player in Major League Baseball, in a yet-untitled historical drama.

The film, helmed by writer-director Brian Helgeland, who wrote both Mystic River and L.A. Confidential, will focus more on the dynamic between the two men, rather than the logistics of Robinson breaking the color barrier. Further, Rickey had many other contributions to the modern game that may be examined outside of his relationship with Robinson.

Redford rarely appears in movies he doesn’t direct anymore, but this fit seems so natural that it would almost be strange discussing anyone else in the role after Redford’s name was mentioned. No word on release or development dates yet, so stay tuned. (24 Frames)

Robert Redford Sick Of Kids Asking Who He Is

Robert Redford used to be one of the biggest (and most Irish) stars in Hollywood. Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid, The Sting, 3 Days of the Condor — the guy struck that enviable balance of doing good work that a lot of people actually see. So it must be tough for him fading into obscurity, with most people under the age of 3 knowing him as the guy who does those boring commercials for the environment. It is in this atmosphere that Mr. Redford might be returning to acting, being reportedly interested in starring in an adaptation of Nicolas Vanier’s Gold in the Snow, to be directed by the writer.

The book is set during the gold rush in 1897. Here’s a brief synopsis:

“1897. Matt, a young peasant U.S. decided character, flees the family farm to live the adventure. Hired on a wharf in San Francisco by two men to the tunes of conspirators, he embarked on a steamer, steering north. There he learns the purpose of their expedition: the Klondike, at unknown river in Alaska will soon be subject to all fantasies. We have found gold, much gold. First come, first served.”

If I had to guess, I’d say the story then has Matt getting rich from gold without any difficulty whatsoever. (via The Playlist)

‘The Conspirator’ Trailer Is Knee-Deep In Mustaches

If there’s a more fitting project for Robert Redford to helm, he hasn’t found it yet. Seemingly right in his wheelhouse, The Conspirator is based on the true story of the arrest and trial of those accused in the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. Robin Wright and James McAvoy lead the cast, though if you look carefully, you can find Justin Long rocking a pretty sweet ‘stache. Or you can just look at the attached pic on the homepage.

McAvoy plays Freerick Aiken, a Union veteran who reluctantly defends in court Mary Surratt, the falsely-accused mother of an actual conspirator. Much of the action appears to the courtroom, and the trailer even features the soon-to-be national catch phrase “Our founding fathers drafted a constitution precisely for times like this!”
