Nerds Stealing Comics From Nicolas Cage Is The Best Movie Idea

Reno 911! creators and Night at the Museum writers Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garant have just sold their script, Action No. 1 to Lionsgate. Named after the famous comic featuring the first appearance of Superman, the script is a comedy revolving around its real life heist… from Nicolas Cage.

That’s right. The film is about nerds who steal from the actual Nicolas Cage. That hasn’t been attempted since Billy Bedlam wouldn’t put the bunny back in the box.

The Superman-obsessed weirdo had his issue stolen in 2000, only to have it recently turn up in an abandoned storage unit. Sadly, Cage isn’t available to play himself in the film as of right now, but Jason Statham has been approached. Seeing Statham play Cage would be an almost religious experience but it’s unclear things will go that way.

Let’s all face the truth, the role will go to Liam Neeson. (THR)

Robert Ben Garant To Write ‘Tux’, A Story Of Penguin Redemption

Guys, don’t tell Thomas Lennon, but it seems that Robert Ben Garant, Lennon’s frequent writing partner, has done the unthinkable and signed on to write a script for Tux without his Reno 911 and The State co-star. Tux is an adaptation of the Japanese graphical novel Tuxedo Gin, which is a weird title even by both graphical novel and Japanese standards.

Disney must have really loved the job he did for them on Herbie: Fully Loaded in order to bring him back, but it’s more likely that he was able to redeem himself with the Night at the Museum installments.

As for the plot of Tuxedo Gin, it sounds uh-mazing. Deadline reports:

The protagonist is a young street fighter who falls into a coma and learns that he has lived his life so selfishly that he only has enough karma points to be reincarnated as an animal 15 pounds or less. Trapped in the body of a chin-strap penguin, he tries to overcome the humiliation and rack up enough good deeds to get his old body back and save the girl he loves.

The old “boy-gets-girl, boy-lives-selfishly-thus-becoming-a-penguin-incarnate, penguin-redeems-himself-for-girl, penguin-reverts-to-boy” plotline. Sure, it’s been done to death, but Garant should be able to offer a new take on it.

Tom Lennon and Robert Ben Garant (“The State,” “Reno 911,”) are set to write The Wee McGinty, which tells the story of a leprechaun who loses his memory and ends up living at a Chicago fire-station. When the rest of the leprechauns find out about their missing comrade, all hell breaks loose.

Aside from writing the bizarre script, Garant is set to direct the film, while Lennon will star in a supporting role. The news comes as the pair are putting the finishing touches on “Alabama,” a sci-fi comedy that will air on FX. (Deadline)
