He's directing '1950', a movie about the Korean War. Which thankfully happened before the age of self-aware jets.

The man who made Vin Diesel a phenomenon, Rob Cohen, is being given all of Korea‘s money. The Fast and the Furious and Stealth director has signed on to direct 1950, a film about the Korean War which thankfully happened before the age of self-aware jets. With a budget of $100 million, it is the country’s most expensive film to date.

The story is based on the works of Pulitzer Prize winning war correspondent Marguerite Higgins, who blazed the trail for female reporters as she covered the conflict’s most historic battles. The film will follow her journey with an American platoon across the peninsula climaxing on Christmas Eve with mass evacuation of 200,000 South Koreans in the face of advancing Chinese and North Korean armies.

Says Cohen, “The Korean War has often been referred to as ‘the forgotten war’ and I think it’s time it was remembered. Telling the story of this harrowing conflict through the eyes of pioneering journalist Marguerite Higgins makes it a very different war film on every level.”

“It’s an awesome chance to see Jet Li surf on a missile and kick Kim Jong Il in the face,” he probably also said. (THR)

It's like 'Gosford Park', but with fast cars and machine guns.

Rob Cohen can’t deny who he is. And “who he is” is the helmer of the seminal, original The Fast and the Furious. So after his dalliance with the literary thriller, I, Alex Cross, starring (shiver) Tyler Perry, he will return to his bread-and-butter with the Andrew Hilton-penned Bullet Run, a straight-up action film that features lots and lots of fast cars.

A private security guru and his former-operative wife bust into Iran to exact vengeance on the man that killed their daughter. HOWEVER, things go awry, forcing the husband-and-wife team to steal a bunch of tuner supercars (they just happened to be lying around?) and extract themselves from harm’s way with their hostage.

Though Cohen claims Bullet Run to be “a unique and genre bending action film,” I have yet to see how this bends the action genre one bit, which is not a criticism. Stick to your guns, Rob, and shoot the shit out of those cars.
'I, Alex Cross' will star non-teen heartthrob Perry. In fact, an image of Madea is a good romantic mood killer for people of all ages.

If Summit is looking to distribute the next Twilight, they probably won’t get it with I, Alex Cross. Though they’re both based on a series of books – the Alex Cross series is by James Patterson – Tyler Perry is hardly a teen heartthrob. In fact, an image of Madea is a good romantic mood killer for people of all ages.

In the film, directed by Rob Cohen (Stealth), Perry plays detective Cross, who disrupts a murderer’s plans. So the psycho killer, played by Matthew Fox (“Lost”), decides to send the detective a tersely-worded letter — actually, he kills the poor guy’s wife. Now Cross has to bring him to justice once more, with the help of his partner Tommy Kane (Ed Burns).

Summit CEO Rob Friedman managed to get the rights partly because he oversaw the last set of Alex Cross movies at Paramount, which starred Morgan Freeman and not a guy who dressed up like a fat woman dressing up like Snooki. (Deadline)

There’s so much Tyler Perry news tonight, it’s like we’re lost inside his insidious ”House of Payne.” Cue bland, sentimental family moment and audience applause.

First we saw a Madea / Black Swan parody poster that’s one ugly-ass duckling, and now we find out that Tyler Perry is being packaged with director Rob Cohen (The Fast and the Furious) to adapt James Patterson’s detective thriller novel I, Alex Cross, part of a series of Alex Cross novels. If you saw Along Came A Spider and/or Kiss the Girls, you probably remember Morgan Freeman as detective Alex Cross, who brought a considerable weight to the dramatic role. I’m sure Perry also plans to bring weight to the role, in the form of a fat suit, and any additional pounds that may come from a wig, comically big glasses and a plate of hot grits to scold a dude with.

Several distributors are considering the package and wondering, “I’d like a piece of that sweet, sweet Tyler Perry box office money, but is this really gonna work? Like, at all?” One big problem is that Perry’s biggest hits are still the movies where he expresses his inner fat drag queen grandma, unless you count Star Trek, where I blinked and literally missed his performance. Still… money… (Deadline)

Time for his 3pm apple sauce.Do you hear that sound? It's the sound of Godsmack warming up their instruments. What could possibly have the ridiculously goateed rockers half-heartedly tuning and making that "jukka jukka jukka" noise? The return of Vin Diesel as Xander Cage, that's what.Of course, that's all old news. Today we have an extreme update. All the die-hard Xander fans who ripped their neck tatts off in solidarity, should be prepared to sew them back on. Not only will director Rob Cohen return to the franchise but he'll be bringing James Cameron's fancy 3D cameras with him. Probably uses a pretty cool truck to carry them too."I feel what we did in the beginning of the decade was bring a different attitude to the action movie and a different kind of hero. With the new 3D instrument and the techniques I can apply, we can create a different kind of cutting-edge experience in 3D by shooting it that way from the beginning the way James Cameron did 'Avatar.' This won't be fantasy characters, it takes place on Earth in real time. That's a new dimension to be explored, and I'm excited."That's right earthlings. You're about to be groin-punched in the face by a non-fantasy character that can surf on speeding missiles. You have until late 2011 to vacate the planet. (ComingSoon)

Michael Bay and Platinum Dunes have incensed a number of horror fans with their Abercrombie & Fitch approach to remaking The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Amityville Horror, The Hitcher, Friday the 13th, and potentially A Nightmare on Elm Street. And now they've got their sites set on incensing horror comedy fans with the announcement they've teamed with Rob Cohen for his long-gestating remake of The Monster Squad, the Fred Dekker cult classic that is fondly remembered by all children of the 1980's. The director of Stealth may seem like an odd choice to helm the picture but he actually produced the original. A movie fact that I did not know and probably the reason I'll never make it to the Scene-It nationals. The movie tells the story of a group of kids banding together to stop Dracula from assembling all the legendary monsters in his quest to take over the world. Surprisingly I'm not too bitter about this news, only because I think the idea of a Michael Bay/Rob Cohen exxxtreme take on The Monster Squad is hysterical. This time around it will be discovered that not only does Wolfman got nards, but also a pretty gnarly Prince Albert piercing. (Deadline)
