Freida Pinto heads back in time for a violent romp through ancient Greece in Immortals. Since a leading role in Slumdog Millionaire put her on the map back in 2008, Pinto has been a frequent person of interest in the stateside cinematic scene. She starred in Julian Schnabel’s Miral earlier this year and recently appeared opposite James Franco in box office hit Rise of the Planet of the Apes.

The new trailer for Rise of the Planet of the Apes first tries to kill you with kindness. Then, about halfway through, it tries to kill you with really, really angry monkeys.

Whereas the first domestic trailer showed a more cold and clinical side to the apes’ upbringing, for international audiences, this video seems to channel its inner Harry and the Hendersons, even going so far as to cast John Lithgow as a loving father. There’s a fine line between “homage” and “rip-off,” and you’re walkin’ it, Apes.

This trailer also shows us that Draco Malf-, I mean, Tom Felton, can be completely menacing without his greasy blonde hair. So long as he’s shown electrocuting a cute monkey.

Beyond that, you won’t glean much any new plot elements, but if you’re looking for tons of plot elements in Rise of the Planet of the Apes, you might be on a fool’s errand.

We finally have a look at the super-tense trailer for Rise Of The Apes. Here we see James Franco hard at work as Handsome Scientist wrestling with his morals while inventing the cure to not being overthrown by apes. I’m really not sure why he decided to invent that. I was pretty content not being a slave to the apes.

The movie looks really good though. The CG is amazing and you get to see a gorilla fight a horse. You’ll always wanted to see that. Admit it.

Twentieth Century Fox‘s marketing department knows: the more words you add to a title, the more money you will make. Long movie titles draw you in to a spiral of words, and the only way to get out is by purchasing a ticket on opening weekend. That is science fact.

So Fox took polls and crunched the numbers in their secret underground “entertainmentories” (entertainment laboratories). They found out that the title Rise of the Apes, for the upcoming James Franco-starring prequel to the Planet of the Apes series, needed more words to make more $$$. After testing a few titles on lab monkeys and humans alike, they decided on:

Rise of the Planet of the Apes

Needs more “of the”s. How about The Story of the Rise of the Planet of the Apes? Or The Movie of the Story of the Rise of the Planet of the Apes? Hopefully, they tested those out too, cause I think there’s even more cashola to be made.

The film shows us how the genetic experimentation of apes led to their eventual domination of our puny planet, and will be directed by Rupert Wyatt. (ComicBookMovie)

Cinema Con is in full swing in Las Vegas and our existing warrants prevented us from attending, but that doesn’t mean we can’t live vicariously through other movie sites. /Film got their hands on a promotional calendar from 20th Century Fox that contains first looks at their upcoming releases that we’ll be poking fun at over the next year. Let’s check them out together while we feel disdain toward the kitten calendars hanging on our office walls that don’t feature movie first looks. Stupid calico. Get out of that birdcage. You are not a bird. You are a kitten.

RISE OF THE APES

Our first look at the CG Caesar. Not too shabby. Excited to see what the apes look like in full. Unless this is actually Frieda Pinto. In which case, ming! Girlfriend let herself go.

NOW

Is this a movie or a Justin Timberlake music video? I’m guessing the lack of Timbaland or white guys with cornrows means it’s a movie.

THE SITTER

I’m told 95% of this film takes place at a fast food drive-thru. Hill’s suggestion.

WE BOUGHT A ZOO

Matt Damon uses a hand puppet to teach his daughter about the birds and bees and guarantee that she grows up to be a Furry.

THE BIG YEAR

Steve Martin, Jack Black, and Owen Wilson camp outside co-star Rashida Jones‘ dressing room window.

THE DESCENDANTS

George Clooney and his The Descendants co-stars also decide to check out Rashida Jones’ dressing room window. Can’t a girl get some privacy???

Now Rise Of The Apes knows how the offspring in military families must feel. Originally, it was moved back from its June release to Thanksgiving to take advantage of the lucrative “get me the Hell away from my family” market. But when Martin Scorsese‘s Hugo Cabret moved into that slot, Fox felt it best to use Apes to close out the summer movie season with an August 5th release date. Also, Scorsese has friends. The type of friends with nicknames like Joey “Two-Times.” And let’s leave it at that, leave it at that. (Box Office Mojo)

Fox has dropped a first look at James Franco in scientist mode for the upcoming Rise Of The Apes. It’s likely they’re saving the apes for the trailer but it makes sense that the first image would be their star. Franco is the man of the hour in the days leading up to his Oscars hosting gig. It seems like there have been twice daily updates about the projects he’s joining, writing, directing, exhibiting, producing, or teaching a class about.

We have a debate going on over here at HQ about what exactly is going on in the above picture. Either he is researching ways to do away with sleep thus completely freeing up his schedule, or he’s reading about James Franco Knowing this guy, it’s probably both. (Jo Blo)

Fox is switching up Apes and Penguins. No, that’s not a line from Madagascar 4: Mo’ Monkeys, Mo’ Problems. It’s Twentieth Century Fox switching around their 2011 schedule of movie releases.

The studio’s Planet of the Apes origin story, Rise of the Apes, is moving from June 24th to November 23rd. That makes sense, because Thanksgiving reminds us about how we took over this land from the Native Americans, so it makes karmic sense that we’d see a movie about apes taking over the world from us. Shame us with a big screen analogy, Fox!

Meanwhile, Fox must have a lot of faith in the Jim Carrey comedy Mr. Popper’s Penguins. They’re moving it from August 12th (the Baltic Avenue of summer movie spots) to June 17th (pure Boardwalk, baby). Let’s hope Carry’s penguins don’t… slip up!

Do you get that joke? It’s a joke about penguins being slippery.

Other notable mentions from Fox’s new calendar:

- The Sitter, a new “R”-rated Jonah Hill comedy, gets bumped from July 15th to August 5th. (Ouch.)

- What’s Your Number?, a new “R”-rated Anna Faris comedy, got moved from April 29th to September 30th. (Meee-ouch!)

- The Big Year, starring Jack Black, Steve Martin and Owen Wilson as bird-watchers, officially has my attention starting Oct. 15th. (Deadline)

Tyler Labine plays a character named Franklin in Rise of the Apes, the prequel to both the five part classic Planet of the Apes series and the memorably confusing 2001 reboot. Labine was at the Television Critics Association press tour to promote his new sitcom, “Mad Love,” so I went up to him after for some Apes scoop. He had a surprising perspective on the movie.

“It’s touching,” Labine said. “We have Andy Serkis at the helm. Basically the leading character is Cesar the Ape and he’s such a pioneer of motion capture craft and had people crying behind the monitors without saying a word, he’s so great. John Lithgow plays a very touching character in there and there’s a lot of humanity to juxtapose what’s about to happen. I think we need to see how humane we are in the beginning, in the prequel, so that there’s a bit of a rivalry between the humans and the apes by the time we get to Planet of the Apes.”

Franklin is a primatologist studying the apes when Cesar evolves into a speaking, emoting rebel leader. He’s a loving sympathizer for the apes too.

“I was kind of playing a bit of an ape myself, a guy who just loves apes, did all the schooling and everything but he’s sort of become like the bleeding heart of the clinic. He was a big sort of teddy bear who is thrust into these really heavy decisions early on in the movie that directly affect the outcome of what come to be with the apes. It was nice. There were some real dramatic turns in there and it also didn’t rely on just me being a smartass which I really liked.”

Of course, no real apes were harmed making the movie. Nor were they even employed. It was all Weta guys in motion capture suits. “Because I’m the primatologist of the clinic that the story is originating from, I did a lot of scenes talking with apes and carrying apes and doing surgery on apes and a couple big fight scenes with apes.”

Rise of the Apes is coming Jun 24.

The original Planet of the Apes rode on the then-groundbreaking makeup effects and a shocker ending. The 2001 “re-imagining” tried to right on action and special effects. Spoiler alert, the movie’s called Rise of the Apes and it stars James Franco as… the human. (The part he was born to play, baby!)

More after the jump…

“When I first heard about it I thought, ‘Well, hmm, I don’t know. Those masks have cult value but…’” Franco said while he was promoting his latest movie, 127 Hours. “Then I found out that that’s not how they’re doing it, that it’s actually all of Peter Jackson’s Weta people doing CG and that I’ll be working with Andy Serkis who played Gollum, and it was the DP from Lord of the Rings, Andrew Lesnie. I was such big fan of those movies and I am interested in new ways of performing and new ways of filmmaking so I thought why not? I had this opportunity and try it out. “

Caesar will look like a real chimpanzee, because they don’t have to worry about those pesky human bodies fitting in a costume. Serkis will just play the scenes like he did for Gollum or Kong. Franco says his scenes with Caesar are A-list scene work.

“When I got to do the scenes with Andy Serkis, it was actually really interesting because he plays a chimpanzee, a real chimpanzee. There’s no way we would ever get scenes that we did with a real chimpanzee. Because Andy’s so good at that behavior so it’s like acting opposite a real chimpanzee with great acting instincts. It was cool, it was new, new for me.”
Franco has done the action thing before in Spider-Man Pineapple Express, The Great Raid and Flyboys. So Apes doesn’t require any badass heroics from him. “I play a nerdy scientist in that so I’m not an action hero at all. I saw 127 Hours as an opportunity to have an unusual acting experience and I honestly felt the same way about Rise of the Apes.”

And judging by this advance artwork I found, it’s going to be a little bit of a madcap romp.

Get Your Stinking Paws Off James Franco You Damn Dirty Apes http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/get-your-stinking-paws-off-james-franco-you-damn-dirty-apes/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/get-your-stinking-paws-off-james-franco-you-damn-dirty-apes/#comments Wed, 30 Nov -0001 00:00:00 +0000 Collider is reporting that James Franco has signed on for Rise of the Apes, the upcoming prequel in the Planet of the Apes franchise. Franco is slated to play a scientist who, while working on a cure for Alzheimer's, befriends one of the test chimps known as Caesar. Caesar begins to learn at an astounding rate after being injected with a new anti-Alzheimer's drug. Franco's character takes pity on the intelligent creature, and informally adopts the animal in order to keep it safe. Big mistake. While it's far too early to judge the film, it has been reported that all of the apes will be the product of CGI rather than the traditional makeup and costumes worn in previous Ape films. And while I can't be certain, it would seem that this reboot pisses all over the grave of Ricardo Montalban by eliminating his character and altering the ape origin story. If Montalban was still alive, I'm pretty sure he'd protest by flinging his poo at James Franco. But he can't because he's dead, so I guess it really doesn't matter.Rise of the Apes hits theaters on June 24, 2011, baring some sort of monkey Apocalypse.

Release Date Set for ‘Rise of the Apes’ http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/release-date-set-for-rise-of-the-apes/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/release-date-set-for-rise-of-the-apes/#comments Wed, 30 Nov -0001 00:00:00 +0000 Variety reports FOX will release prequel Rise of the Apes on June 24, 2011, with Rupert Wyatt confirmed to direct. In a lie I just made up, he promised me he wouldn't cast Marky Mark or Helena Bonham Carter in any of the roles. Oooo Burton burn. Rise of the Apes is "an origins story set in present-day San Francisco. The film is a reality-based cautionary tale, where man's own experiments with genetic engineering lead to the development of intelligence in apes and the onset of a war for supremacy." When you play God with monkeys you get talking monkeys that can do math and read. Those skills alone make them superior to the average American!Peter Jackson's visual effects company WETA Digital will handle all of the effects on the film. They will render, for the first time ever in the film series, photo-realistic apes rather than costumed actors. Hmmmm, interesting (strokes sparse-haired chin). I hope they consider intermixing some practical effects as well. You really can't beat the realism of the apes in Congo.Stop playing God, Dylan Baker!!!
