Luke Evans is the new face of vengeance.

The white smoke billowing from Relativity Media’s chimney confirms that after months of deliberation, we finally have a new The Crow. And that man is someone you’ve hardly heard of.

Luke Evans, who is on the rise thanks to roles in Fast and Furious 6 and The Hobbit sequels, has officially been brought on to play the vengeful rock musician Eric Draven. And the words in the hallway are that the studio always considered Evans their first choice, and the nice dinners with Tom Hiddleston, Alexander Skarsgard, James McAvoy, Mark Wahlberg, and Bradley Cooper were only brief flirtations, a sewing of the wild oats. However wearing Evans’ promise ring comes with conditions. The film has been pushed back to accommodate the actor’s commitments to Dracula and The Desolation of Smaug. After those are fulfilled, he’d better learn to like leather pants. (Deadline)

Unless he isn't.

Considering the original film killed its star, I understand any trepidation that actors are showing toward The Crow remake. Last we heard, Avengers star Tom Hiddleston had a successful meeting with Relativity and was undergoing makeup tests. Those tests must have looked too silly as today there’s word that True Blood’s Alexander Skarsgard is now in talks for the role. Which makes much more sense than the previous candidates.

For those keeping score at home Skarsgard has replaced Hiddleston who replaced James McAvoy who replaced Bradley Cooper who replaced Channing Tatum who replaced Mark Wahlberg. Let’s hope the Skarsgard rumor is true and producers can get a deal locked in. Everyday they wait, brings us closer to Russell Brand playing The Crow. (Deadline)

He reads a little too Coldplay to be 'The Crow'.

After trying and failing to give Bradley Cooper, Mark Wahlberg, and Channing Tatum ridiculous haircuts, Relativity Media are now shaking their scissors at James McAvoy. Bloody Disgusting reports they are looking to cast the X-Men: First Class star in their remake of The Crow.

He’d play Eric Draven, a rocker murdered because his shitty songs about the rain suck who returns from the grave to avenge he and his slain fiancee. The original film was released in 1994 at the height of the grunge era and featured Brandon Lee as the gothic, Sandman-like vigilante. There’s no word if the character will be updated to reflect the mood and trends of today’s music, but how great would it be if the Crow we’re now modeled after one of the guys from Fun? He could still dress like he were from the 90′s.

He's risking a critical drubbing with a title like that.

The movie powers-that-be have decided “yeah, okay” the comic book series Hack/Slash can be adapted for the screen. Additionally, Marcus Nispel has given his “yeah, okay” when asked to direct. The director of Conan and Friday the 13th will add to his oeuvre of people getting things chopped off of them with the project adapted from Tim Seeley’s comic.

Hack/Slash follows Cassie Hack, a young woman who survives a slasher’s attack, and with her gigantic Jason-y-looking friend Vlad, goes on the hunt to kill all slasher movie archetypes. It’s about time someone stepped in to do something about them. I’m sick and tired of our teens being impaled while humping or burned to death in sleeping bags.

People tend to be harsh toward Nispel’s films (and stupid head coverings), but he does have a talent for creating some pretty gory sequences. As long as the script isn’t totally dumbass, this shouldn’t be that bad. Plus, it would be nice to see Jason Mears getting some work. (THR)

Put the dorky image of lab coats and giant machines blooming with arcs of lightning aside when you encounter these cool time travelers from TV shows.

Forget the dorky image of lab coats and giant machines blooming with arcs of lightning when you encounter these cool time travelers from TV shows. No longer the domain of B-movies, time traveler shows on prime time TV now features decent sized budgets and actors who weren’t pulled out of a Der Wienerschnitzel on their lunc break. Take a moment to map out a plan for revenge or success should time travel start happening, just make sure you do it with style.

Dan Vasser

Being a father has enough trials without being tossed back in time at random moments. Dan doesn’t come with super powers or a life he can ignore in order to serve whatever higher authority in Journeyman has decided to play twister with his timeline. With a brain and a dedication towards helping the people he encounters on his journeys, Vasser is a cool time traveler that is caught up in the chaos of something he can’t control but still works towards juggling saving people in the past and saving his relationships in the present. Substance beats style and gets a nice twist with his inability to control his unique “events”.

Ninth Doctor Who snapping his fingers

Doctor Who gets to show off the warrior facet of the time lord with this incarnation played by Christopher Eccleston. There are cool time travelers and then there’s The Doctor, an immortal regenerating last of his kind explorer who tends to show up where and when needed. Eccleston gets to give old and new fans of the series a quietly raging doctor, one who is ready to go to war over his grudge and that’s an aspect up until now The Doctor never much evidenced. A harder, most driven character in this generation, the ninth Doctor shows off the terrible power and fury that up until now has been hidden behind a thick veneer of Zen-like calm and that is fascinating.

Danny Quinn

Danny Quinn flying a helicopter

A scrapper and officer of the law, Danny Quinn seethes with the regret and loss of his brother and doesn’t enter into the idea of time travel without serious skepticism. Played by Jason Flemyng, Quinn feels like the eye of the storm, calm for now but venture too far out and destruction will reign. One of the cooler time travelers out there, this Primeval star won’t fall in love with time travel anytime soon but he won’t run with his tail tucked between his legs either.

Tru Davies

Tru Davies stretched out on a white fur

Not many time travelers get as cool a partner as Zach Galifianakis. Davis, played by Zach, is Tru’s supervisor, confidant and enabler as he encourages Tru whenever she hits rough spots in her quest to save the dead who ask for her help. Although only getting to go back a day in Tru Calling, Tru gets enough terror and mystery to fill her plate as she works to guide the living away from the path that leads to their death. Funny, sincere and well ensconced in her small tribe of friends, Davies gets to be one of the cooler time travelers out there as she tries to better the lives of others while being in the grips of a much larger and unseen conspiracy.

The Eleventh Doctor

Eleventh Doctor Who in his red bow tie

Quirky dress sense meets quirky personality and the eleventh Doctor comes ready to play. With an aura of intuitiveness and a drive to help others, this version of Doctor Who as portrayed by Matt Smith blends the warrior caste with the healer cast and throws in a sprinkle of occasional aloofness that makes him one of the coolest time travelers ever. Bringing bow ties back into popular dress wear might be beyond this Doctor but conveying other worldliness well taking the best bits of humanity is not. Smith keeps his companions and his encounters simultaneously at a distance and within his embrace with a powerful sincerity that makes it look easy.

Relativity Media just picked up the film Act Of Valor for a 2012 release. Directed by two stuntmen, the film stars actual Navy SEALs starring as a squad of Navy SEALs on a rescue/kill bad guys mission. Though it sounds bad on paper, Relativity dropped $13 million on the project which shows they’re confident in the material.

According to a press release, the filmmakers had “unprecedented Naval access.” Oh really?

Lasse Hallström is getting his hands on some more of that sweet, sweet Nicolas Sparks box office. The Dear John director has been hired by Relativity to helm Safe Haven. But don’t worry. The story isn’t just sadness, mumbling, crying, and making out. There’s also a supernatural element. The story “follows a young North Carolina woman who is determined to avoid forming personal ties until a series of events draws her into two reluctant relationships. As she begins to fall in love, she struggles with a dark secret that still haunts and terrifies her.”

Herpes.

Just kidding.

Maybe. (Deadline)

The Great Snow White Race continues. Relativity recently bumped their untitled Snow White project’s release date to March 16, 2012, months ahead of Universal’s Snow White and The Huntsman bow on June 1, 2012. Now Relativity is pulling ahead by doing a major casting blitz, hiring 7 bros to play 7 dwarves. Where are your dwarves, Kristen Stewart? I like that they’re using actual little people, as opposed to camera tricks, wardrobe tricks or f*cking CGI.
Eric Draven can come back from the dead, but when he's killed with a lawsuit, he becomes perma-dead.

Eric Draven can come back from the dead, but when he’s killed with a lawsuit, he becomes perma-dead – which means no crows can help him. Sorry, Eric. Blame the Weinsteins. Everyone else – thank the Weinsteins.

Relativity has been busy launching a remake of The Crow, for which Bradley Cooper is in talks to star. Ughhh. However, The Weinstein Company says they have a contract from 2009 giving TWC exclusive distribution rights Crow sequels. They filed an injunction against Relativity, who was shopping those rights around. Now there’s a very public war of words, but will it get to the point where T-Bird gets involved? I guess we’ll see. Here’s what lawyer types are saying:

Team Weinstein: “(Relativity CEO Ryan) Kavanaugh decided that Relativity would not perform that contract and will purport to sell TWC’s distribution rights to others here and overseas in willful breach of contract.” … “If somebody tries to buy those rights other than the Weinsteins, those people will be simply buying a lawsuit.”

vs.

Team Relativity: “This is yet another typical litigation stunt from the Weinsteins who have a long history of threatening law suits with the sole purpose of intimidation.” … “While we expect these types of antics from the Weinsteins, we are shocked that a lawyer of Mr. Fields’ caliber would make such false, reckless and intentionally harmful statements to the press about Relativity and Mr. Kavanaugh. We intend to seek appropriate remedies for this misconduct.”

If the movie doesn’t happen, look for Relativity execs to dress all emo and exact some revenge. (Variety)

Relativity has picked up the Jennifer Lawrence thriller 'House at the End of the Street'. What did you think I meant? Sex? No, but that would be awesome.

Relativity has picked up the Jennifer Lawrence thriller House at the End of the Street. What did you think I meant by that title? Sex? No, but that would be awesome.

House at the End of the Street follows Lawrence and her mom, played by Elisabeth Shue, who move across the street from a house where a double murder took place. “So that’s why we got it so gosh darn cheap,” Shue shrugs directly to camera. Then Lawrence befriends one of the boys who used to live there (Max Theriot), and things get all tense and potentially murder-filled. Director Mark Tonderai shot the film in Ottowa last year, before Lawrence became a thing. An Oscar nominated thing.

Besides distributing House, Relativity is also working to remake The Crow, possibly with Bradley Cooper, so possibly terribly. (Hollywood Reporter)

'The Crow' is back from the dead and ready to paint its face... to freak you out.

The Crow is back from the dead and ready to paint its face… to freak you out.

Director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Days Later) has been chosen by Relativity Media to reboot The Crow. This is a good film to remake, because a film that comes back from the dead is impervious to harm done by movie critics. According to the press release, the new film will concern Eric Draven, but hopefully it won’t be Draven passing on the crow torch to his crow-loving son or something.

“The original Crow was groundbreaking cinema,” says prodcuer Edward R. Pressman. ”Its gothic visual and musical ideas influenced a generation and cinema itself. With Juan Carlos, we have every confidence that his new Crow will have a similar impact on the contemporary audience.”

People still love Tim Burton movies, right? The kids dig that goth stuff. Plus, as long as nobody dies on set, there should be a lot of gloomy money to be made.

The story about five robot lions that unite to form a giant space warrior must be told.

Despite being the most popular of the giant frikkin’ robot cartoons of the 1980′s, Voltron has had a hard time making it to the big screen. Now there’s news that producers are in a bidding war for the rights.

Relativity Media is said to be taking time out of swimming in their giant money bin long enough to take an interest in the project. Meanwhile, a script had been in the works with Atlas Entertainment for some time now. Although, no updates from them beyond concept art have lead fans to believe the project was in turnaround. At any rate, the interest from Relativity is a good sign that this movie could happen.

No word on when it will be brought to the screen, though 2013 seems to be the target date. They’d better get to work soon if they hope to put Alex Pettyfer in the Black Lion’s cockpit while we’re all still aware of who Alex Pettyfer is. The film, based on the George Willis and Don Keith novel “Firing Point,” concerns the teaming up of a sub commander and a group of Navy Seals who must rescue of the Russian President and defeat an admiral who is attempting a military coup.

Noyce is also attached to a project called Timeless, so whichever gets off the ground first will likely be the one he goes with. Noyce, who last directed Salt (but won’t be directing the sequel), has a last name that sounds like what a Frat boy says when he discovers a second keg. Hunter Killer sounds like what an 8 year old titles a screenplay he’s writing for his action figures to star in, but has the potential to be a decent action thriller.

I’m big fan of the Snakes On A Plane internet meme. So I’m glad that director David R. Ellis isn’t letting naysayers sway him away from using another jokey title that could cost his movie millions of dollars in revenue. Ellis isn’t a fan of the foreign title of his new movie Shark Night 3D, so he’s proposing this title for the US release:

Untitled 3D Shark Thriller

“The title says everything you need to know,” Ellis said. “‘We’ve got sharks.’ ‘It’s in 3D.’ and, ‘It’s a thriller.’”

You know what? If Relativity Media wants to release a film with “Untitled” in the title, and David R. Ellis doesn’t mind putting his reputation on the line, I will proudly participate in an Untitled 3D Shark Thriller Photoshop contest. Then I will forward the link for that contest to my friends, so they can post it on their Facebook walls. We’ll all have a grand old time on the intertubes.

Now, will I pay $25 dollars for a movie they were too ironically lazy to find a good title for? Uhm… no. But I’ll gladly make fun of the trailer on Twitter, which I assume will help their box office numbers somehow.
Not to be upstaged by Kristen Stewart, even though she totally is getting upstaged, Julia Roberts is close to nabbing the part of the Evil Queen in 'The Brother's Grimm: Snow White'.

The story of Snow White is so hot right now, they should call it Slush Brown. That’s because the heat has melted… you know, let’s just all agree to move on from that joke.

Earlier today we reported on talks that Universal is close to casting Kristen Stewart to play the lead in Snow White and the Huntsman. Not to be upstaged, even though she totally is getting upstaged, Julia Roberts is close to nabbing the part of the Evil Queen in The Brother’s Grimm: Snow White for Relativity Media. Directed by Tarsem Singh (The Cell), this version of Snow White will be very dark, which does not distinguish it from the 400 other Snow Whites projects in any way. Oh, this one has a dragon for some reason. America does love dragons.

All the buzz is currently on the Kristen Stewart announcement today. Roberts can’t be ‘Mona Lisa Smiling’ about that. In a related story, I hear Roberts screams at a magic mirror in her house. Something about “I’m the fairest” and ”that bitch from Twilight” and then uncontrollable sobbing. The drama, produced by Intrepid Pictures, was directed by James McTiegue, and tells of Poe’s last few days, albeit fictionalized. The film was written by Ben Livingston and Hannah Shakespeare, and also stars Luke Evans, Alice Eve, Brendan Gleeson and Oliver Jackson-Cohen. Trevor Macy and Marc D. Evans at Intrepid produced the film, with no clear release date yet. In the film, Poe tries to tracks down a serial killer inspired by Poe’s dark writing. Talk about revisionist history! What’s next, a movie about Abe Lincol fighting vampires? Oh…

Ready for a hip version of David and Goliath? Tough. It’s happening anyway.

Exorcism Of Emily Rose director Scott Derrickson and Relativity Media are ready to pour an energy drink over the Bible. Goliath will take the classic story of David and Goliath and give it a modern feel a la 300 or The Bourne Identity. So…. homo-erotic shakey-cam?

The story follows the young shepherd David as he fights for his survival against the giant Goliath. Given the presence of a shepherd, I’m guessing the film takes place in the past or in New Zealand.
With rival Snow White projects set up at Universal and Relativity, it was only a matter of time before the studios began their search to figure out who would play the mean, old bitch in their films.

With rival Snow White projects set up at Universal and Relativity, it was only a matter of time before the studios began their search to figure out who would play the mean, old bitch in their films. J.Lo being tied up as an “American Idol” judge has made this search a lot harder than it should be.

Universal has their eye on Charlize Theron to play the Evil Queen in Snow White And The Huntsman, and Relativity reportedly wants America’s sweetheart Julia Roberts to loan her trademark cackle to the role in Brothers Grimm: Snow White. Further casting rumors suggest that Michael Fassbender, Riley Keough, Felicity Jones, Bella Heathcote, or Alicia Vikander may join Huntsman. No dwarf casting has been mentioned yet, but Verne Troyer reportedly “likes his odds.” (Deadline and THR)
