It’s unknown whether or not the film would revolve around the original trio of nerds or if producers Todd Phillips and Joel Silver will find brand new people we’ve never seen before in our lives. Co-writer Michael Bacall is already at work for a treatment on the sequel which likely reads like so… “Guys drink beer… hot girls kiss one another on neck… lasers… Skrillex…” Sounds like a go picture to me. From the trailers and clips I’ve seen, it certainly does look like the epic party to end all parties. But let us not forget the crazy parties that proceeded it, laying the destructive groundwork for the obliteration of teen braincells.

American Pie

Depending on your outlook, the party at the end of American Pie was a total success or completely disgusting. Sure, everyone got laid. But one of those unions was between a seventeen-year-old boy and his classmate’s mom. That’s statutory rape and it doesn’t belong at parties. Depending on your outlook, and your state of residence.

Can’t Hardly Wait

Can’t Hardly Wait takes the best part of any ‘80′s high school movie and focuses on it. The party. The film follows several plotlines all intersecting at the same party where everything goes wrong. The house gets trashed, the bathroom lock breaks, the jock embarasses himself, and Love Burger never gets their sh*t together well enough to play.

Those familiar with the project know that director Nima Nourizadeh cast relative unknowns for the story of high school nerds who become legendary after throwing the most epic party. How epic? Hot chicks, at least one dwarf, tasers, flame-throwers, and not to be overlooked, a little dog in a moon bounce. The dog alone sells me. Is it too late to get him a Golden Collar nom?

Another audience member referred to it as “Superbad on crack.” Hey, let’s all go out and try some crack. It looks awesome! (Coming Soon)

But then I saw this trailer and changed my mind. From producer Todd Phillips and rookie director Nima Nourizade comes this film about high school kid who throws a house party that gets a little out of hand. But not in a Dazed and Confused way, or even a Risky Business way or even a Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead way. Ahh, the high price of high school popularity.

Nope. This kid somehow managed to sneak Electric Daisy Carnival into his parents house. It’s being discussed as a comedy, but I really don’t get any humor coming through this trailer. Rather, it feels like a slow-motion trainwreck.

The fact that the thing opens up with a video message to his parents reads rather ominously.

“Mom, Dad – if you’re watching this video, then that means I died of either alochol poisoning or spinal injuries sustained while motorboating some skank. Tell Patches that I love him.”

Project X doesn’t hit theaters till March 2, so we’ll have plenty of time to see what the deal is, but right now, just watch the film and be glad you’re not this kid.

The film, scripted by Matt Drake, writer of the upcoming Todd Phillips/Joel Silver produced comedy Project X, is set up at Mandate Pictures.  With this project, and the start of his own production company (Ninjas Runnin’ Wild), Efron seems to be entering a new phase of his career. A phase where his billions of screaming tween fans won’t be old enough to be admitted to see his movies in the theaters without a guardian, but will find a way regardless. Love always finds a way.
