We all got pretty excited or angry or sad or confused when it was announced that FX was filming a pilot based on Brian Michael Bendis‘s comic series Powers. We watched closely and commented as castings and shoot dates were announced, eager for the official word that the show would soon take over our airwaves. And then… nothing.

It went away as quickly as it came together. The pilot was actually filmed with Jason Patric, Lucy Punch, and Charles S. Dutton but FX head John Landgraf rejected the pilot without the news making a lot of noise. Today we find out that FX isn’t done trying to get this show together. In fact, they’re hoping to move forward by filming a completely new pilot with a brand new cast. Which means we might have ample opportunity to once again get excited or angry or sad or confused.

Anyway, why wouldn’t this show be delayed? It is based on Powers after all. (Variety)

He finally makes the jump from cable dramas to...another cable drama.

6 photosLucy Punch

Titus Welliver is pretty far from a household name, but a new role in FX’s Powers is bound to raise his profile a little, even if he isn’t quite made the toast of Hollywood. Welliver has, over the years, become a ubiquitous “that guy,” having made appearances on myriad cable and network TV dramas, including Deadwood, Sons of Anarchy, and the The Good Wife.

Jason Patric and Lucy Punch will serve as the stars of Powers, a show that focuses on a police division that solves crimes that involve people with superpowers. Welliver will play a character named Triphammer, an egotistical technology guru that has invented a method of removing and bestowing supernatural powers onto people.

Powers is right now shooting its pilot in Chicago, so a decision on a pickup is a ways down the line, though the buzz behind this show would lead me to believe its very likely. Do it for us, FX. And if not for us, if only so a few more can learn the name “Titus Welliver.” (AOL)

It's only been 14 years since 'Speed 2: Cruise Control'. Are we ready to forgive him?

In casting news for one of the most anticipated pilots this fall, Jason Patric is in negotiations to star as detective Christian Walker in the FX paranormal cop drama “Powers,” based on a comic series of the same name.

The series contemplates a police division tasked with investigating the crimes committed by those with supernatural powers. The pilot will focus on the murder of a celebrity who also had supernatural powers, a case that Walker is determined to solve “even if it costs him his badge.” Loose cannon, city turned into a war zone, mayor up for re-election, etc.

Just yesterday, Lucy Punch was announced for the role of Deena Pilgrim,Walker’s partner. Charles S. Dutton (Roc!) and Bailee Madison are also on board.

7 photosKatie Aselton

Lucy Punch has been selected to play the female lead, Deena Pilgrim, in the FX drama pilot “Powers” despite the fact that Katee Sackhoff exists. Pilgrim is a tough-as-nails rookie on a police task force that investigates crimes committed by and/or against “Powers” aka “super-powered individuals.”

She joins the previously cast Charles S. Dutton, who will be portraying Captain Cross. The role of Deena Pilgrim’s partner, the gruff veteran Christian Walker has yet to be cast but an offer has gone out to Super 8‘s Kyle Chandler, who is still considered a long shot. If the show is anything like the graphic novel series on which it is based, we’re in for some awesome television. PLEASE let this be awesome. (Deadline)

Charles S. Dutton ("Roc," "House") will star as Captain Cross, Head of the Department. In my book, he'll always be Head of the "Roc" Department.

Comic book movies have taken over the theaters, so why can’t comic book-y TV shows take over the cable tubes? One problem is that most of them are terrible. “Heroes,” “The Cape,” “No Ordinary Family,” probably “Wonder Woman,” and the awful list continues. However, I’m optimistic about the FX pilot “Powers.” Like the hit show”The Walking Dead,” it’s based on a beloved series from Image Comics. “Powers” has also gotten off on the right casting foot.

Brian Michael Bendis‘ series focuses around a police department investigating murders related to “powers,” or people with superpowers, who are commonplace in their world. Charles S. Dutton (“Roc,” “House”) will star as Captain Cross, Head of the Department. He’s a strong, magnetic actor who I don’t see enough of. Sometimes I’ll be eating breakfast, or taking a jog, and I’ll say to myself, “hey… Charles S. Dutton.” At which point, I’ll go on YouTube and watch his episode of “Are You Afraid Of The Dark?” Cutter’s Treasure, you guys.

The “Powers” pilot will be directed by Michael Dinner, and adapted by Charles H. Eglee. (Hollywood Reporter)

And FX, perhaps the hottest cable channel to be found right now, wants Chandler for a new show they’re cooking up. “Powers,” a procedural about two police officers who investigate crimes committed by perps with superpowers, has reached out to Chandler, who is awaiting a new script before making a decision on the part. No word on whether Chandler would wear his trademark whistle.

Perhaps the fact that FX has already locked down his TV wife, Connie Britton, in Ryan Murphy‘s “American Horror Story” will influence him. If he jumps on board, he can see his wife at Christmas parties and they can swap stories about FX’s zany VP of Development at the end of long days. Here’s to hoping Aimee Teegarden does a guest stint on”Justified” or something for a very pleasant Taylor family reunion. It’s a “superhero detective” story that deals with “a homicide department devoted to cases that involve superheroes.” I’m not familiar with the comic, but it reminds me of two comics by Alan Moore – “Top 10″ and “Watchmen,” the latter having already been adapted for the screen by Zack Snyder. And “Powers” has had a very long run of more than 10 years, so there’s plenty of fodder for plotlines if the pilot gets picked up as a series.

The news came from Bendis’ Twitter, on which he posted: “Powers pilot was just greenlit by FX. It’s official! Your window of reading Powers while it was still cool is running out.” Damn it, Bendis, I was going to make that joke.
