8 Critically Acclaimed Films That Deserve An Unnecessary Prequel

Sequels, prequels, and reboots have been the bread and butter of Hollywood since…well, since the beginning (it’s just a little more obvious now). As the old saying goes, there’s nothing new under the sun. Take a look at the horror classic, The Thing. Purists are up in arms about the unnecessary prequel, which opens today. But many forget that the John Carpenter classic was itself a remake. When you get down to it, Hollywood is one big incestuous mess.

The Thing is the latest example, but not all movies get turned into franchises. Usually, the critically acclaimed flicks manage to slip by. The hell with that, says I! I need to know the back story to Kramer vs. Kramer, and I need to know it now! Lets take a look at some critically acclaimed films that deserve an unnecessary prequel.

‘Contagion’ Posters Tell You Six Times Not To Touch Or Talk To Anything

We get it. There’s a disease and it’s bad. You don’t need to tell us twice. And you certainly don’t need to tell us six different times.

But he does anyway with these character posters for Contagion, which I’m just going to start describing as “Outbreak-but-better.”

We’ve got posters here for Matt Damon, Marion Cotillard, Laurence Fishburne, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jude Law, and Kate Winslet. There’s acknowledging that you’ve got a great cast, then there’s bragging about it, and right now director Steven Soderbergh is toeing the line. Seriously, though, this cast looks lights-out.

It’s not clear if the film will be as scary as the posters would lead us to believe, but I have hopes that it will be every bit as good as the hype that surrounds it.

‘The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Part 1′ Teaser Poster Sure Does Tease

Respect the Twilight traffic. Even if it’s a silly little teaser poster, it will bring in approximately 7 bazzilion hits, so here we are. Behold! The Twilight Saga: breaking Dawn, Part 1 poster. Which features…twilight. Perhaps it’s a breaking dawn. I’m not sure which. Actually, I think both those things are the same. Whatever.

Also, there are trees. Which is a really stunning touch. Hmm. What else? It’s got the date. November 18, 2011. That way all those crazy teens and tweens can see it over Thanksgiving break and tweet about it to their Pokemons on Skype.

The Muppets Awkwardly Walk Towards You In First Poster

The Muppets have been full-body walking, even dancing, in movies for years. Yet, this first poster for The Muppets looks strange to me. Maybe it’s just because a new Muppet anything that’s not a t-shirt at Disneyland is a shocking change of pace for the foa rubber animal crew. This is your moment, guys. Walk with pride… and with the help of many, many grumbling Muppeteers.

The Muppets come to theaters November 23rd. The film is directed by James Bobin, starring/written by Jason Segel. Interesting choice of tagline: “They’re Closer Than You Think.” Wait. Hear that? I think there might be a Muppet in my apartment right now. I’d better get my baseball bat, in case it’s one of the giant monsters. He got the nickname “Sweetums” in prison, you know. (AICN)

New ‘Hangover 2′ Posters Are Sick, Bro

Fans are eagerly awaiting the premiere of The Hangover 2, so they can see it with their bros and have a great time. Until then, they can check out these new character posters, featuring each of the main characters (but not Liam Neeson) in a mildly disheveled state, presumably with one of their lines from the movie printed above their heads.

My favorite is the one with Ed Helms, who’s making a tough-to-pin-down facial expression, somewhere between intense fear and resignation. Which one is your favorite? The monkey, probably. I bet it’s the monkey. (Empire)

‘The Hangover 2′ Poster Sheds No New Light On The Film

The new The Hangover Part II poster confirms everything that has been released about the film thus far. There’s the monkey, Zach G. has a shaved head, they’re in Thailand, and boy, oh boy, do these fella look hungover! Maybe don’t drink so much the third time around, guys!

Ed Helms has a Mike Tyson face tattoo, which is something of a new development. I think I have a pretty idea who gave him the tattoo. (Hint: It’s Liam Neeson) And Bill Clinton is nowhere to be found, per the lastest reports.

Otherwise, let’s not read too much into it. It’s three dudes and a monkey on the floor.

New ‘Thor’ Character Posters Are Like Mugshots Of The Gods

The people over at Thor‘ target=’_blank’>Thor-2′ target=’_blank’>Thor Posters Inc have been catching some flack for perceived laziness, since many of the posters have that “90s superhero movie” look and feel to them. Then, when they try to do something different, they catch holy hell from poster aficionados too! So it looks like this time, with these 6 character posters that have been released on several different websites recently, they decided to split the difference. They look like the infamous “red” posters, but with a more traditional color scheme. It remains to be seen if everyone on the internet will be satisfied with these.

The posters feature six characters from the movie, and they look like they should be holding cards with their heights and weights. There’s Chris Hemsworth at Thor, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Anthony Hopkins as Odin, Idris Elba as Heimdall, Natalie Portman as Jane Foster and Jaimie Alexander as Sif. ‘Fast 5′ And ‘Midnight In Paris’ Posters Could Not Be More Different

The two posters released today represent the yin and yang of cinema. The id and ego. Highbrow and lowbrow. They’re, like, totally opposite, man. First up is the Fast 5 poster. Featured on that poster are a lot of bald men who look very angry with whoever is looking at them on that poster. Tyrese Gibson is so mad that you’re looking at him that he is seriously considering shooting you. And I don’t blame him. Stop staring. It features the people more than the cars, which is a first. Can Paul Walker and Vin Diesel sell more tickets than Japanese sports cars? We shall see. (Movie Web)

Now, in this poster for Woddy Allen’s latest, Midnight in Paris, there are no cool cars of any kind and Vin Diesel is literally NOWHERE on the poster. In fact, the only person on this poster is Owen Wilson, who has been proven by scientists to be the exact opposite of Vin Diesel. Also, you’ll notice a pretty strong Starry Night motif in the sky. As best I can tell in the Fast 5 poster, there are zero nods or references to Van Gogh paintings. However, if you should see one, please put it in the comments. In fact, the only thing these movies have in common is my desire never to see either one. (Playlist)
