He's probably totally in the familiar artistic struggle of doing something new and original versus making $100 million.

While rumors about Johnny Depp signing on for a fifth Pirates of the Caribbean film were largely met with eye-rolling and tiny bouts of nausea, it turns out that he doesn’t lack creativity or principles, but rather that his creativity and principals are just REALLY expensive when he sells them out.

Considering that Pirates: On Stranger Tides just crossed the $1 billion mark globally, there WILL be a Pirates 5. And considering that Johnny Depp has made $350 million from the first four installments, he will be be returning to his character Captain Jack Sparrow.

Of course, don’t expect Pirates 5 to come flying out of the studios. Depp has mentioned that he regrets not spacing out the installments a little further to give the public time to digest. He may get his wish whether he still believes that or not, seeing as how he is booked for Tim Burton‘s Dark Shadows, followed by his role as Tonto in Disney’s The Lone Ranger. So if you wanted to see Depp broadening his horizons the near future with projects that aren’t remakes, sequels, or the requisite Tim Burton project, you might have to go rent Dead Man and Chocolat, because it doesn’t seem there will be anything matching that description hitting theaters for a while. (The Wrap)

Which director will Disney set sail with? Hey, that pun kinda works with the visual themes of the movie. Great.

Whether you liked Pirates of the Caribbean 4 or wished you owned a boat with a plank, so you could shove the film reels off of said plank, On Stranger Tides is a box office winner. Disney has collected over $639 million doubloons worldwide so far, which means there will be more of them. The only problem is that Johnny Depp and Pirates 4 director Rob Marshall are not yet signed on for a fifth installment. They’ve also set sail to make another project together, Thin Man, which is perhaps their way of abandoning ship.

6 photosDaphne Joy

If Depp pulls out, that’ll obviously create a major whirlpool for producers to fight out of. However, the studio is already throwing around new names for director: Sam Raimi, Chris Weitz, Alfonso Cuaron, Shawn Levy and their fantasy pick… Tim Burton. Apparently, they wanted Burton for #4, so it seems unlikely they’d get him now. Of those, I’d say Levy makes the most sense, given that his filmography contains many huge budget, family friendly CG-based movies. I guess we’ll see how it all shakes down.

Screenwriter Terry Rossio already turned a draft of Pirates 5 to Disney. (CinemaBlend)

Disney made a deal with Pirates writer Terry Rossio (Shrek), but not his longtime collabo-writer Ted Elliott (also Shrek). Was treachery afoot?

Dead men tell no tales… and screenwriters who quit their movie franchises don’t write any tales either.

Pirates of the Caribbean 4 has not come out yet, but Disney is already planning the sequels. That makes sense, because the movies have grossed an assload of booty at $2.68 billion worldwide. Development is starting on Pirates of the Caribbean 5, which will be filmed simultaneously with Pirates of the Caribbean 6 and maybe Pirates of the Caribbean 7: Curse of the Treasure of the Incredible Box Office Tallies! However, the series is losing one of the two writers who has been at the helm of every film since the beginning.

Disney made a deal with Pirates writer Terry Rossio (Shrek), but not his longtime collabo-writer Ted Elliott (also Shrek). We don’t know yet why he decided to voluntarily walk the plank, but our guess is the novelty of watching Johnny Depp do a gay Keith Richards impression wears off after about… oh, I don’t know, a decade. (TheWrap)
