Phillip Noyce Is The Helmer/Director Of ‘Hunter/Killer’

The question of whether or not Phillip Noyce (Patriot Games, Salt) would direct Hunter/Killer has finally been answered, just like the question of “Who Is Salt?” was finally answered. That’s a big affirmative on Noyce, and spoiler alert: Salt is Angelina Jolie. Sorry if I ruined the big surprise for you.

Hunter/Killer is based on the novel Firing Point by Don Keith and George Wallace, which has a far less retarded name. Here’s a synopsis of the submarine drama:

“…an untested submarine captain [must] work with a Navy SEAL team to rescue the Russian president, who has bee taken prisoner during a military coup, in an effort to stop a rogue Russian General from igniting World War III.”

The script was written by Jamie Ross, who penned X-Men: First Class. The trailer for First Class looks awesome, so I think it’s safe to make the leap that this will be an excellently written film, assuming the entire length of the movie is 3 minutes or so. (/Film)

Phillip Noyce Could Direct ‘Hunter Killer’, Should Consider A New Title

Phillip Noyce is in talks to step in for Pierre Morel (Taken, District B-13) as director of Relativity Media’s Hunter Killer. The film, based on the George Willis and Don Keith novel “Firing Point,” concerns the teaming up of a sub commander and a group of Navy Seals who must rescue of the Russian President and defeat an admiral who is attempting a military coup.

Noyce is also attached to a project called Timeless, so whichever gets off the ground first will likely be the one he goes with. Noyce, who last directed Salt (but won’t be directing the sequel), has a last name that sounds like what a Frat boy says when he discovers a second keg. Hunter Killer sounds like what an 8 year old titles a screenplay he’s writing for his action figures to star in, but has the potential to be a decent action thriller. (Latino Review)

Remember this past summer when Salt came out and everyone was super excited and saying things like, “Hey, I just saw Salt for like the fifth time. Probably gonna go back later today and see it again.” Yeah, I don’t remember that happening either. Even so, there are talks of a sequel thanks to Angelina Jolie’s box office appeal overseas. Director Phillip Noyce, however, is all U-S-A! U-S-A!, and won’t return for a sequel. He tells Moviehole:

“Those 3 [alternate] Blu-ray cuts [of the film] represent just about everything I have to offer on Evelyn Salt. If there ever is a sequel, better it’s directed by someone with a completely fresh take on what I believe could be a totally entertaining and complex series of stories.”

Then that someone will title that sequel Mission: Impossible 4. So, with Noyce not willing to stare at Angelina Jolie for sixteen hours a day, what’s next? One project he’s had preliminary talks about is Our Wild Life, the Kenya-based story of wildlife conservationist Dame Daphne Sheldrick. The project was previously known as Elephant Orphanage with Nick Cassavetes attached, but he bailed when he realized that sounded like the name of a movie Brendan Fraser would make. (via The Playlist)
