Jean-Claude Van Damme is an artist lost to the sands of time. People in 2011 look back at his movies in utter confusion. “Why is he kicking those people?” “Why does he talk like that?” “Why is he still kicking those people?” But the themes of his work still have a lot of resonance for the denizens of the modern era. And thankfully, director Philip Noyce is bringing one of his most acclaimed movies, Bloodsport, to the children of today. Here’s a plot synopsis, which will hopefully make sense to you if you keep your unabridged dictionary handy:

“[T]he story will follow an American who goes to Brazil to recover from the violence he has experienced in Afghanistan who gets involved in a martial arts contest.”
