First Ridiculous Look At Al Pacino In Phil Spector Biopic

When it was announced that Al Pacino would re-team with Glengarry Glenn Ross writer David Mamet for HBO’s Phil Spector biopic, I got really excited for two reasons. 1) Pacino in an array of silly wigs. 2) Quality film-making. Today, we’re given our first look at Pacino as the troubled producer.

Sadly, the wig Pacino wears is only mildly silly. I choose to believe Mamet and executive producer Barry Levinson are saving the giant blond afro perm for later promotions because where do you really go from there? It would be like using Bruce Springsteen as an opening act. Though only mildly silly, this picture is good for a few chuckles. Especially when you compare it to Wet Hot American Summer‘s Alan Shemper.

Jeffrey Tambor And Bette Midler Murdered Their Auditions For Phil Spector Biopic

HBO is making a biopic about the Phil Spector murder trial. Now there’s more news from behind the Wall of Sound: Al Pacino, who will play Spector, is lawyering up.

Bette Midler and Jeffrey Tambor will play defense attorneys in the film: Midler’s portraying Linda Kenney Bade and Tambor will be Bruce Cutler. Not sure how comfortable I’d be if George Bluth Sr. was defending me in court, but at least you’d get a frozen banana or two. In contrast, I’d totally ask the Bette Midler witch from Hocus Pocus to defend me – you simply don’t mess with that.

The biopic will be directed by writer David Mamet, and executive produced by Barry Levinson. As for Pacino, between roles in You Don’t Know Jack, this and Gotti: Three Generations, it looks like he’s trying to literally “make history.” I wish him the best of luck in his history-making endeavors. I hope you’re ready to see Al Pacino attempt to act dramatically while wearing a potpourri of silly lady-wigs, because that’s what HBO is going to give us. The NY Times reports that Pacino will rant and scream his way through a portrayal of legendary music producer/firearms enthusiast Phil Spector for an HBO biopic written and directed by David Mamet.

This is awesome. Spector is best known lately for his ability to produce dead actresses, rather than his acclaimed music production, but he’s lead an intriguing life that not many know about. For instance, his unauthorized biography highlights the time he took a romantic interest in a young La Toya Jackson. He invited her over and she left running and crying through the Hollywood Hills not too long after. Nobody knows what went on in the house. I mean, c’mon. What HASN’T a Jackson seen? If Mamet can crack that nut, we’re in for an interesting story.
