This is a dream come true for Giamatti, who in 2011 told ShowbizSpy:

“I thought Rhino was the greatest thing when I was a little kid. It was a guy who was basically in this rhinoceros outfit and I always thought, ‘Why don’t they have The Rhino in one of their movies,’ but maybe The Rhino wasn’t that big of a deal for anybody but me.
“If they ever go with The Rhino I would be ready and waiting.”

Like Crazy’s Felicity Jones is also in talks to join the film, which includes stars Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone, as well as the aforementioned Foxx and fellow newcomers Shailene Woodley and Dane DeHaan, who are playing Mary Jane and Harry Osborne. Jones’ role is unspecified as of now but let’s hope she’s playing Black Cat. Because the combination of these images will more than make up for the trauma of seeing Giamatti in a skintight outfit.

Paul Giamatti – Big Fat Liar

Just one year before American Splendor launched him into starring roles, Paul Giamatti was died blue and taking nut-shots opposite Frankie Muniz in the kid’s comedy Big Fat Liar. In the film, Giamatti plays a sleazy Hollywood producer who plagiarizes Muniz’s school essay and turns it into a hit film. As revenge, Muniz teams up with Amanda Bynes to turn his world upside down. His skin and hair are dyed, his car destroyed, and his staff turned against him. That’s the kid’s film equivalent of being Qaddfi’d.

Bryan Cranston – Mighty, Morphin’ Power Rangers

It was a long and winding road that lead Bryan Cranston to Emmy gold and his breakout role as Walter White on Breaking Bad. Along the way, he picked up guest-starring spots and odd voice work all around Hollywood. One voice over gig was that of Snizard on Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers. The snake/lizard hybrid easily defeated its foes by launching “tonsil snakes” that would wrap around and weaken their targets. Cranston got off lucky here. So many Hollywood hopefuls are forced to deal with a very different definition of tonsil snake if they want to be stars.

Sean Connery – Zardoz

After captivating the world with his portrayal of James Bond in six films, Sean Connery was walking on sunshine. Considered by many to be the epitome of sexy, the Scottish actor was a major movie star the entire world over. That must be want gave him the confidence to wear a long french braid and strut around in a puffy red diaper with matching ammo bandelier suspenders. Eh. It was the 70′s.

Adam Shankman, director of Rock of Ages, has been shamelessly bilking Hollywood star after Hollywood star into appearing in his movie. Now, finally, it appears that at least one person has broken free of his seductive grasp – star of”30 Rock” and those ads for Hulu, Alec Baldwin.

Baldwin has dropped out after being confirmed by Shankman back in March. He was supposed to play “Dennis Dupree, the owner of the Bourbon Room, the Sunset Boulevard nightclub at the center of the movie.” I guess now they’ll have to get Stephen Baldwin to do it instead?

Some of the other actors not as savvy as Alec Baldwin include Tom Cruise, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Russell Brand Paul Giamatti, Malin Akerman, Bryan Cranston, and Mary J. Blige. Well, you know what they say – never give a sucker an eve break or smarten up a chump. (The Hollywood Reporter)

More specifically, he’s husband to the Anita Bryant/Tipper Gore-type played by Catherine Zeta-Jones who wants to ban all rock and roll. Oh no! Will rock and roll be able to survive this cultural onslaught? How about rock or roll, separately? I think rock has a bit more vigor than roll does – I hope roll pulls through OK. I’m sure they’ll both be OK – this is America, after all.  (Deadline)

PENELOPE CRUZ will team up with director Woody Allen once again, this time on a film set in Rome. There are no plot details yet, but the computer program I wrote says the odds are very high that it won’t be as good as earlier Woody Allen movies. (EW)

THANDIE NEWTON will play opposite Tyler Perry in his next film Good Deeds, which Perry will write and direct as well. The film is about a successful businessman who must choose between his rich fiancée and a down-on-her-luck single mother. Even if it’s bad, Newton can take comfort that it can’t be worse than Norbit. JAY BARUCHEL will join Robert Pattinson, Samantha Morton, and Paul Giamatti in David Cronenberg’s Cosmopolis. Pattinson plays a billionaire who loses everything he has in one day, including his new wife. Bad things happening to Pattinson, I can get on board with. Baruchel plays the original founder and conscious at Pattinson’s company. (Deadline)

MAGGIE GRACE will star alongside Liam Neeson in Taken 2, produced by Luc Besson. And yes, the will-he-or-won’t-he-tension of whether Neeson would take on Taken 2 has been resolved in the affirmative. Eight-time “Namey” award winner Olivier Megaton will direct. (Deadline) (Collider)

In the film, he’ll play the manager of Tom Cruise’s band. So basically he’ll be singing about green M&M’s on the rider and the disposal of drunken, passed out groupies. I believe Toto had a song about that. (Deadline)

“I know Juliette Binoche is in it now, and Samantha Morton. It’s going to be a crazy cast. Like, I have a feeling it’s going to be amazing.”

I have a feeling it’s going to be amazing too, Mr. Pattinson. Here’s a plot synopsis, in case you’re not rabidly following news about Don Delillo adaptations by David Cronenberg:

“[The movie] follow 24 hours in the life of newly married billionaire Eric Packer (Pattinson) as he cheats on his wife, is pursued by a stalker (Paul Giamatti), gets attacked by a protester and gradually loses his entire fortune over the course of a single day. “

Sounds pretty good, right? No word yet on who Morton is playing, but hopefully the movie will live up the promise indicated by the involvement of Robert Pattinson. And, uh, those other people. (via The Playlist)

Now that winning means something entirely different these days, I hope a movie like Win Win can remind people what victory truly is. This is a superb movie. Even if you’re not into the plot or the characters, you’ve got to appreciate how well it’s written, just as an exercise.

Mike (Paul Giamatti) is a down-on-his-luck small time lawyer and high school wrestling coach. He decides to become the legal guardian of his client Leo (Burt Young) because he needs the $1500 monthly fee. Then Leo’s grandson Kyle (Alex Shaffer) shows up. Mike and his wife Jackie (Amy Ryan) let Kyle stay with them, because his mom Cindy (Melanie Lynskey) is in rehab. It turns out Kyle is a great wrestler.

That’s a long way to go to get Kyle on the wrestling team, and there are actually more details in the movie. The point is that it’s not some contrived sports movie. It’s a world in progress, where things are already happening when you meet the characters. Mike is on a first name basis with the judge and prosecutor. It’s that kind of town.

Protecting Kyle becomes a real Blind Side on a working class budget. Cindy is shown for what she is, not in any silly manipulative way. She’s just an addict and that’s going to come out after any extended period of time spent with her. You see Mike go through the process of figuring out a strategy for dealing with her. It’s nice that pure reason is the movie’s core value. Writer/director Tom McCarthy lets his characters behave without forcing them to do what the plot needs.

Greco style wrestling is actually exciting. Without any knowledge of the sport, you at least know you don’t want Kyle to ge taken down. Too much of the wrestling happens off camera. They have a few moves, but then it’s just about what the scene needs to be. There’s a feel good match when wimpy Stemler (David Thompson) gets his shot, and an emotional one where Cindy sends Kyle into a rage in the ring.

McCarthy fails on the montage though, just totally fails. For one, there is no training in the montage at all. There isn’t much wrestling either. Mainly they play Wii, hang out and cut down the tree in Mike and Jackie’s yard.

I think McCarthy nailed how kids speak though. All the young characters speak in brief phrases, with an inflection free monotone. It’s the art of ambivalence. The laughs are mild, pleasant but not hilarious. Win Win’s victory is telling a story that evolves out of character and flows. That’s winning.

The Resident Evil series is coming back to the big screen with a fifth installment on September 14, 2012. Sony and the Umbrella Corporation have made big profits killing zombies time and again. Actually, the last outing/slaughtering – Resident Evil: Afterlife – outgrossed all the previous sequels with $200 million dollars worldwide. So: more money, more zombies, more sequels, more problems for the last remaining regumans (regular humans).

Meanwhile, on the other end of the culture spectrum, handsome, suit-wearing gentleman George Clooney will see his Howard Dean inspired election film Ides of March open October 14 of this year. Clooney is co-writing, directing and starring with a cast that includes Ryan Gosling, Paul Giamatti and Evan Rachel Wood. There will be zombies in this one too, but the metaphorical “political” zombies of greed and power that’ll eat the brains of a young idealist politician. Clooney co-wrote, directs and stars in – get ready to use your “shocked” face for a moment – a politically themed movie based loosely on Howard Dean. Originally a play by Beau Willimon, Ides of March is about an idealistic press secretary (Ryan Gosling) who falls victim to the big, bad Washington machine. At one point, Gosling is literally captured and eaten by a giant machine wearing an Uncle Sam hat. But not really.

The cast is impressive. Besides Clooney and Gosling, the film also stars Paul Giamatti, Jeffrey Wright, Marisa Tomei and Evan Rachel Wood. They’re eyeing/idesing a December 2011 – January 2012 release. (/Film)

The Congress is a feature that mixes live-action with animation and follows Robin Wright as an aging actress who sells her likeness to a movie studio in order to care for her disabled child. As a result, her image can be used any way the studio pleases and it begins to have a detrimental effect on her life that she never anticipated.

It’s good to see an animated project that isn’t kid-skewed. Fingers crossed that audiences react well to this. Otherwise Keitel, Huston, and Giamatti will end up voicing pigeons in a DreamWorks cartoon about a cockroach who dreams of a career on Broadway. (The Playlist)

Giamatti plays a down on his luck attorney and high school wrestling coach who finds star athlete potential in a drug addict’s abandoned son. Cue the heart warming nuances. Now cue the junkie mother returning to eff up a good thing. Damn these depths and allegiances that are so thoroughly explored! You make me want to be a better man. Or exploit a kid who doesn’t know any better.

It resembles a copy of a copy of a copy of Braveheart, which is to say, again, not sharp. Despite a very strong cast (Brian Cox, Jason Flyming, Mackenzie Crook), it seems as though they will be jockeying for attention against falling buildings and catapults. Also, the color settings seem to make the whole thing look like porn (or anything on the BBC), so that’s not going to do much to sell audiences on the production values. So, enjoy Catapults, Swords, and Paul Giamatti. (Vulture)

Ed Helms already revealed that former President/full-time party dude Bill Clinton will not appear in the film as previously believed. And now we know that Paul Giamatti definitely did film a cameo in Thailand as previously believed. But he is not taking Mel’s role.

“I do, I play Mel Gibson,” Giamatti teased MTV, but then added, “No, I think Liam Neeson plays that.”

He was able to shed a little bit of light on his role, “They kind of swore me to secrecy. I play a bad guy in it.” It’s unclear whether we’ll see Big Fat Liar Giamatti or Shoot ‘Em Up Giamatti which is fine. Just as long as we don’t see him as a lady-boy.

In other news, The Green Hornet’s next nemesis might be Vince Vaughn, whose Ron Howard-directed romantic comedy The Dilemma had to settle for second-best, making $17.4 million, which you math wizards already know is about half the weekend gross of The Green Hornet.

In the “exciting” world of limited release, the only shining light in Paul Giamatti in Barney’s Version (for which he won a Golden Globe last night), which made $17,925 per screen on four screens. Four screens! It’s like when an election is really close and you wonder if maybe the results would have been different if you’d voted. (The AV Club)

On Saturday, Clinton, who just happened to be hanging out in Bangkok, Thailand, filmed a short scene for the Todd Phillips’ comedy. The 42 President will reportedly play himself, which means there’s a good chance we will see his penis. If all goes well, it could pave the way for Hillary Clinton to play the dreaded canklepotamus in Peter Jackon’s upcoming adaptation of The Hobbit. (People via Vulture)

Although nothing has been confirmed, many are speculating that Giamatti will take on the tattoo-artist role originally offered to Mel Gibson. Liam Neeson was brought on as a replacement for Gibson, but was then given a different part. Regardless of how it pans out, I have a feeling that this may finally be the film that gets the Oscar monkey off Giamatti’s back, assuming they give an Oscar for “Best Legitimate Actor Appearing in a Scene with Thai Hookers.”

Acto Paul Giamatti has joined the cast of HBO’s upcoming project, K Blows Top, and will portray Soviet Leader Nikita Khrushchev during his 13-day visit to the U.S in 1959. The title of the film, which is based on a book by the same name, comes from a New York Daily News’ headline describing a tantrum thrown by Khrushchev upon learning his scheduled trip to Disneyland had been postponed.

Tom Hanks’ Playtone will produce the project, along with HBO, and marks the second collaboration between Hanks and Giamatti on a historical film for the network. Hanks also produced John Adams, an HBO miniseries in which Giamatti played the lessor known brother of brewer and patriot, Samuel Adams. (Collider)

Do you like mobsters? Do you like zombies? Do you like computer animation? If so, you’ll probably love The Goon, a new animated film based on the Dark Horse comic. The film follows the exploits of a mob enforcer and his sidekick as they navigate through a world filled with the supernatural.

Clancy Brown voices The Goon, and Paul Giamatti takes on the roll of his sidekick Franky in this David Fincher produced film. At this point, the director still remains a mystery. Perhaps I’ll ask Giamatti and Fincher about it personally at their upcoming Comic-Con panel. Oh wait, I’m not going because no one thought to invite the overnight guy. (Empire)
