It’s been far too long since we gave creedence to any rumors regarding Ghostbusters 3: The Sequel No One’s Asking For, so try this on: Paul Feig, the comedic force behind Freak and Geeks, Bridesmaids, and The Heat, is reportedly mulling over directing Ghostbusters 3.

Why? Because, in keeping with Paul Feig’s recent M.O., he would cram the cast full of women and show men a thing or two about comedy!

Or something like that.

This approach might actually be the only viable one, as Bill Murray seems to be steering clear of the entire concept, and Harold Ramis is dead. So unless the world wants to see Ernie Hudson and Dan Aykroyd for 100 minutes (They don’t), then a new cast is probably the move to make.

And this way, he’ll have a viable pretense for casting Melissa McCarthy, which we all know is his real endgame – getting Melissa McCarthy paid work.

In case you’re immediately wondering whether THIS R-rated female comedy will star Melissa McCarthy – it hasn’t been announced, but he has to direct ANOTHER Melissa McCarthy comedy (Susan Cooper) before he even gets to this one, so…maybe.

The film, which is yet-untitled, will be one of Feig’s own brainchildren (brainchilds? Weird.) but written by The Other Woman‘s Melissa Stack. No details have been made available, but it’s supposed to serve as a showcase for an ethnically diverse group of comedic women, so if diversity is one of the top qualities you look for in a film, you’re all good here.

What is known is that Paul Feig will get a very dressed up on set, for photoshoots, and for publicity, making us wish that we had the motivation to shower, let alone match our hats to our pocket squares.

Paul Feig recently disclosed that he was a lifelong Peanuts fan, which is a good thing, because that announcement came with the announcement that he will be producing the new Peanuts live-action film that will star (with help of some heavy prosthetics and makeup work):

  • Jack Black as Charlie Brown
  • Susan Sarandon as the mumbling teacher
  • Linda Cardellini as Lucy
  • Michael Cera as Linus
  • Donald Glover as a new Peanuts character “Sweet Lou”

Ok. None of those casting revelations are true. In fact, the film is going to be animated. But that was fun, wasn’t it?

But, in case the crippling ennui and existential dread of your own life isn’t compelling enough, you’ll get the opportunity to see disillusioned, defeated toddlers mope their way through life in cartoon form in about two years.

Much like that cat from Pet Sematary, Arrested Development’s return from the grave seemed like a good thing at first but has eventually brought with it destruction. The destruction of hope. When the cult favorite series was resurrected, comedy nerds called to see more of their departed favorites via Twitter, the Internet’s Ouija board.

Their calls to the other side have been heard. And rejected.

EW asked co-creator Judd Apatow about the likelihood of a movie, but it seems that he doesn’t want to go there.

“I love the question mark at the end of the series, so I never want to know more than that. It is the reason why you don’t want to find out what happened, like when they got off the bus in The Graduate.”

Paul Feig also crushes us, adding additional pressure onto the creators of Party Down.  ”I mean it could be great, but if it’s anything less than great, then it just waters down the memory of the rest of the show. For some reason that becomes the last thing you’ve done, and I always feel like if you don’t get it right it erases the memory of what came before it. But I don’t know. If we came up with a great idea, who knows?”

So, there is hope?! Thank God those kids haven’t grown out of their awkward phases yet!

Paul Feig‘s adeptness at putting women in embarrassing situations has landed him the chance to direct the third Bridget Jones’s Diary film. The Bridesmaid‘s director is said to be in talks to helm the sequel to the classic romantic comedy. Bridget Jones creator, Helen Fielding, has written a script that would follow Renee Zellweger‘s titular character on her attempts to have a baby.

But nothing is a done deal just yet as it may be tricky to get the film’s stars to return. Renee Zellweger most likely would because she did Case 39, so how’s she going to argue? Colin Firth has an Oscar now which means his dry charm has become a lot more expensive. And Hugh Grant is keeping busy doing… I don’t know, Hugh Grant stuff. So let’s just go ahead and put Jon Hamm in their place in a dual role. (Daily Mail)

Bridesmaids was a film that kept us laughing from beginning to end and the two unexpected highlights of the film weren’t Kristen Wiig making wacky noises or Kristen Wiig making a lazy eye face. Instead, they were Melissa McCarthy and Jon Hamm. This morning there was news that director Paul Feig wanted to call upon his all-stars again for another project. Moviehole caught up with Feig, who was surprised to hear that the news had broken.

“It was one of those things where I was like ‘Oh, that wasn’t supposed to come out’ but I’m kinda glad it did; I’ve been secretive about it the past few months but I guess I’ve dropped enough hints too. It’s a real passion project; again, I just want to tell stories that don’t normally get told and this is another of those.”

“They’re the inspiration for it”, Feig says of Hamm and McCarthy, adding that the film would be a “very unconventional love story, in the vein of [Bridesmaids]. Judd and I have a very specific storytelling style – it’s very real and out of the reality we’ll try to make it as funny as possible. I’m excited about that.”

How long away is this prospective Hamm/McCarthy movie? “I’m just writing it at the moment”, the filmmaker says, “There’s actually something in the Fall that…is a sequel to a movie that people know but I can’t really talk about it yet; we’re still trying to finalize it. That would be fun. It’s something I’ve wanted to with some actors I’ve wanted to work with.”

“This would be a reboot of a franchise. I want to talk about it but it might not happen because of actors deals and so on so I better remain mysterious.”

Ummmm…. my guess is Ghostbusters. Or something else entirely. Yeah, let’s go with something else entirely.(Moviehole)

I the spirit of the studio system, the team behind a successful project is being preemptively reunited to do “that same thing again, but, you know…different.”

After Bridesmaids’ monster take at the box office this May, Universal has reunited director Paul Feig and producer/director/writer/man-child Judd Apatow by purchasing a pitch from their camp. Of course, the studio refuses to deliver the log line, but Deadline informs us it’s an “unconventional love story and is something Feig has been working on for awhile.” Wow! Consider my appetite whetted!

This duo has worked together since “Freaks and Geeks” way back in the 1990′s, and their bodies of work, both individually and as a team are pretty solid, so get excited about this project, if only because this reunion might mean an original new comedy from two bright minds, as opposed to a stale retread, similar to that other May release.

Jon HammMad Men“) may have been voted Most Handsome in high school. Paul Feig (creator of “Freaks and Geeks“) was probably voted Most Likely To Write A TV Show About How Shitty High School Was For Nerds. However, as Paula Abdul and a cartoon cat instruct us: opposites attract.

On the set of the Feig directed Bridesmaids, he hit it off with Hamm. Now the two are working on some kinda top-secret-for-now project. Comedy nerds, start heaping tons of praise on this project right now. Speaking of “comedy nerds,” that’s how Feig described Hamm in a recent interview:

“[Hamm] is such a comedy nerd. He will quote lines from Kids in the Hall: Brain Candy. You’re quoting something even I can’t quote! He’s always wanted to do comedy. One of the next things I’m developing a project for him to star in. I think he’s so funny. He’s like Cary Grant to me.”

It’s pretty awesome that Jon Hamm loves Brain Candy. If I was passing him on the street and said “cat on my head,” he might yell “cat on my head” back at me, rather than give me a freaked-out glare and walk in the other direction. I guess you can’t judge a nerdy book by it’s handsome cover. (Collider)

Bridesmaids played well at SXSW, but I wasn’t into it. It’s actually the first movie of the festival I haven’t liked, so it probably feels like a harsher letdown.

It opens funny with Annie (Kristin Wiig) having outrageous sex with Ted (Jon Hamm). Annie speaks in the stream of consciousness rambling that Wiig peppers with humor each time she adds a phrase. Once her best friend Lillian (Maya Rudolph) gets engaged, it becomes the typical wedding movie.

All the other bridesmaids are contrived one-dimensional types. Rita (Wendi McLendon-Covey) complains about her obnoxious sons and husband.  Becca (Ellie Kemper) is the lovey dovey newlywed. Megan is a butch type. Helen (Rose Byrne) is just so perfect it drives Annie crazy.

Wiig pretty much stops doing the Kristin Wiig thing in order to serve a generic, clichéd plot. She does a dance when Officer Rhodes pulls her over but stops the random phrases and tones down the physicality, so you don’t get a Kristin Wiig movie after all.

The big problem with the premise is that jealousy is not funny. Helen outshines Annie’s wedding plans and the film follows the same plot as all “outrageous wedding” movies. At the engagement toast, the dress fittings, the bachelorette party and bridal shower, Helen comes up with crazy plans that take over Annie’s sincere ones.

Helen’s manipulative usurping isn’t funny though. She has connections to a fancy dress shop. She wants to take the girls to Las Vegas. She has a fancy mansion with a fondue fountain. The only joke is that Annie is insecure that Helen’s more superficially impressive than she is.

Bridesmaids might coast if it was just generic, but it drags out so long it forces you to work it out. Directo Paul Feig said that “work print” only meant they had color timing and sound issues to polish. He should really consider taking 30 minutes out, because there’s so much plot. At a certain point you realize while Annie’s working out her relationship with Office Rhodes, hey, they still have to have a wedding to wrap this sucker up.

I like Kristin Wiig a lot. I think her physicality is phenomenal and her attitude is sweet. She doesn’t seem to make jokes at anyone’s expense. She just enjoys being silly. Bridesmaids doesn’t feel like her, and she wrote it herself!
