If violence is never the answer, why aren’t they making movies about people respectfully sitting down and talking to strangers until they’re unconscious? Paramount’s Insurge Pictures – the studio’s micro-budget shingle – has picked up a WorldStarHipHop movie. Whatever that looks like. Based on the website most popular for posting bystander videos of brutal public fights, the plot is said to somehow be akin to Ferris Bueller’s Day Off in tone. I’m assuming that means in this version Ben Stein will get punched out from behind.

How To Make It in America creator Ian Edelman will helm the project with Russell Simmons producing. Edelman’s a talented filmmaker and Simmons is a mogul and both come with a certain pedigree, so maybe this movie will be more than just yelling and punching. Sounds boring already. (Deadline)

Early last week, Paramount announced that they were to become a film studio that no longer uses film. Christopher Nolan heard this and was all like, “Bitch, please.”

Thus, Paramount has bent their new rule to make an exception in the case of Nolan. His next film, Interstellar, will get to call itself a film as the studio will release both digital and film prints. Once again, Nolan shot the project with a combination of 35mm and IMAX so that we can all pay higher ticket prices and stay up late to look at pretty images of outer space and Matthew McConaughey’s face getting all stretched out in a wormhole.

Paramount also teases that exceptions will be made in the future for other directors as well. This decisions will be based on which films the studio thinks audiences will be willing to pay more to see. (LA Times)

I guess they still have to call Paramount a “film studio” even though the Hollywood giant has declared it will no longer deliver film prints. Because people who say “movie” when they mean “film” are cavemen.

Considering the film prints have to be physically delivered to the movie theaters (I mean “cinemas”), it seems logical that studios would be eager to cut out that expense when films could probably just be downloaded by the theaters (CINEMAS). I guess. I’m not a projectionist. And I never will be.

Anyway, it’s likely that other studios will follow suit in short order leaving some people to piss themselves and ooze out of their stupid mouths why film is better. It’s not. Digital is better. You know how I know that? Because they can make digital look like actual film, but not the other way around. When you’re comparing two things, and one of the things is capable of being the other things as well, that’s the more desirable thing.

Oh. The last film they put out on film was Anchorman 2. You can read into that as much as you’d like.

As he had been called upon to be the modern face of the National Lampoon Vacation films reboot, Ed Helms is once again being summoned to make something old accessible to teenage fans of nut-shots. The Hangover/The Office nerdy guy will take over the role of Frank Drebin in a reboot of The Naked Gun. Though I find Helms likable (when not singing), this is one he shouldn’t touch. Nobody should touch. The Naked Gun is more than a classic. It’s special and doesn’t deserve to be mishandled.

Creators Jim Abrahams, David & Jerry Zucker are not involved with this reboot as Paramount has assigned scripting duties to Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garant. Presumably because they are close friends with “Weird” Al Yankovic and the studio’s best shot at getting him to agree to cameo once again. (Variety)

You can’t keep a good murder-junkie-corpse-monster down. Jason Voorhees is set to rise again in yet another Friday the 13th film. Exhibitor Relations reports that Paramount is moving forward with a reboot. This film will have no relation to the Marcus Nispel reboot from a few years back but tell an entirely new story. New in the sense that it will still involve Jason putting the pointy end into young people.

The release date is set for Friday, March 13th, 2015. It will also mark the thirteenth film in the series, meaning we should see something special. My money is on Jason’s bar mitzvah.

Turns out, you need to own the rights to something if you want to make a movie about it. Who knew?

“No project relating to It’s A Wonderful Life can proceed without a license from Paramount,” a studio spokesperson told The Hollywood Reporter. “To date, these individuals have not obtained any of the necessary rights, and we would take all appropriate steps to protect those rights.”

Thus we are saved for another day from seeing a film where Clarence’s wings are revealed to be all awesome and cybernetic.

As they did with World War Z’s ‘megaticket’ promotion, Paramount has announced a ‘superticket’, which goes on sale November 26th, for the comedy that will guarantee fans an early screening and other perks. In the case of World War Z, the megaticket cost $50 and allowed purchasers to see the film two days prior to its official release and receive an HD digital copy of the film when it became available. The package also included a small popcorn, a pair of custom RealD 3D glasses and a movie poster. Additional info about the benefits of an Anchorman 2 superticket remain TBD, leaving us all to guess for now which is better a measurement of value, super or mega. (THR)

Surprisingly, anticipation for the sequel has been at a fever pitch after the awesome-but-dopey original and a postponed release. Then again, this film features ninjas fighting on a mountain face and who doesn’t want to see that sh*t?

Thanks to this weekend’s successful take, Paramount has granted the greenlight to a third G.I. Joe film. As of now, John M. Chu is not attached to direct nor are any of the sequel’s cast signed to return. However, offers will likely go out soon. On the heels of Tony Scott‘s shocking suicide, plans for a Top Gun sequel, no matter how half-baked they were, appear to have been abandoned. Scott was spearheading the project, and failing his involvement, Paramount has killed the project, leaving Iceman, Slider, Maverick, Ghost of Goose, Jester, Merlin, Charlie, Sundown, and Hollywood all homoerotic with no place to go.

The studio is left with plans for a 3D re-release of the film, but even those plans are up in the air, as they feel public backlash in light of Tony Scott’s death could put the studio in a bad light.

That’s probably just Paramount being hypersensitive, but right or wrong, those are the studio’s feelings, and we have to respect them.

Just because Darren Aronofsky‘s Noah won’t surf into theaters for close to two years from now isn’t any reason why we shouldn’t see Russell Crowe dressed like a homeless man. USA Today has released the first look at Crowe in Aronofsky’s epic telling of the life of the Patriarch who saved horses and tigers and honey pot ants from extinction.

Unfortunately, this first look only shows Crowe glaring off-camera, and doesn’t feature the wingless demons (!) and giants (!!) that the film is also reported to feature. He’s probably looking over his shoulder at a Perfect Storm-style wave or two zebras doing it or Brownie Bites on the craft services table. We’ll have to wait a long time to find out. You know how, 20 years after The Godfather Part III, everyone’s been all, “I wish they go back to that well to give us some more Corleone family stories?”

Shut up. People DID say that. Lots of them.

And Paramount is going to give the people what they want. After the release of the Puzo-outlined The Family Corleone this week, it seems that Paramount and Puzo’s estate have reached a truce that has resulted in “an attraction to do a movie.” The novel focuses on the Corleone’s rise to power, but presumably not in the exact same way that Godfather Part II did.

Considering the original cast of 40 years ago is mostly dead or dying or Al Pacino, it’s unlikely that any amount of makeup could get these guys looking right for a prequel, so let’s all freak out by assuming it will be populated with Chace Crawford, Alex Pettyfer, and Mischa Barton.

I have some good news and some bad news for Michael Bay. Paramount‘s indentured servant has fought for years to get his dream project, Pain and Gain, made. In order to do so, he had to make a string of films starring big, noisy robots. That hard work has paid off and Pain and Gain is officially a go. However, just when he thought he was out, they drag him back in. The price of this dream project? You know it. More big, noisy robots.

Producer Lorenzo Di Bonaventura told MTV News that a new Transformers is on the way with Bay at the helm, “Michael’s going to direct it. It will be in the summer of 2014.”

This won’t be another sequel per se. It looks like plans will involve bringing in a new cast of underwear models to team with the robots to save Earth. “I think we really are going to do a reboot there,” Di Bonaventura said. “[But] what that’s going to be, we don’t even know yet…. We’ve got to get a story first.”

Ha. Seeing as the first three earned $2.6 billion without a story, I’m thinking that’s not a real priority.

Although it hasn’t been easy to bring World War Z to the big screen, star Brad Pitt and director Marc Forster are already talking sequel. Two actually. Which would make the series a trilogy. Pitt recently told the LA Times:

“[Director Marc] Forster and Paramount Pictures each view World War Z as a trilogy that would have the grounded, gun-metal realism of, say, Damon’s Jason Bourne series tethered to the unsettling end-times vibe of AMC‘s The Walking Dead.

So, like zombie parkour? I guess I’m into it.

Of course, this all depends on how the film does at the box office when it’s released at the end of this year. Many feel that the zombie trend is wearing out, but if so it’s dying a really slow death with upticks and booms in popularity. The success of The Walking Dead despite its redundancy and slow plotting is proof that the zombie soup hasn’t been completely pissed in yet. We’ll wait for The Asylum to release World War Zombies before making that call.

Michael Bay must be tired of giant robots by now, right? Not if Paramount has anything to say about it. The studio and the director are close to reaching a deal for him to helm Transformers 4, but it seems that his arm is being twisted.

Paramount knows how badly Bay has been wanting to do his passion project, Pain and Gain. It’s all he’s talked about at press cycles for the past few years but Transformers commitments have prevented him from filming it. Now, he’s getting his wish. But there’s a price to pay and that price is Transformers 4. Vulture’s source warns that a deal hasn’t been made yet, but one is imminent and could be announced early next week.

What a relief. The character arcs and plots of the Transformers universe are far too rich to possibly be told over just three empty-plotted movies.

The company behind the conversion, Legend3D, already has four minutes in the 3D can (only 106 to go), and screened them today at the International Broadcasting Convention in Amsterdam (where 3D is extra-appreciated).

Legend3D CEO Rob Hummel said, “As I understand it, they are planning to release [Top Gun] in 3D in early 2012, though I know they want to get Tony Scott’s approval before they go forward.” I hope that this doesn’t move forward. Is there any force in the universe stronger than Turtle Power? Answer: obviously not.

Real Life Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Need proof? Despite my no longer being 8-years-old, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise continues on in new television shows and movies. You need some serious mutagen to pull that off. Paramount believes they have successfully revived one big, dormant franchise with Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol. Now they’ve asked the writers behind MI:4, Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec, to repair the Turtle Blimp and get TMNT off-and-running again. Timing-wise, I bet Paramount is partly looking to take advantage of fellow Viacom Club member Nickelodeon‘s upcoming series revival of those Ninja Mutant Turtle Teenagers, which should emerge from the sewers late next year.

No word yet on how they’ll approach the reboot. Hopefully, it’ll be with awesome, Jim Henson puppet head costumes again, but I’ve got a sinking feeling that Krang’s gonna zap them all into the CG / live action mix dimension, which is far more horrible than Dimension X. At least in Dimension X, they don’t have Smurfs. (Deadline)

Who will pen such a light-hearted family romp? The guy who wrote The Book of Eli, of course. If you can write for Denzel, you can definitely write for some dumb little kid who’s stuck with a bunch of aliens. That’s screenwriting 101, folks.

The source material for New Kid is an online comic published by Penny Arcade, which has found some success as a creator of blogs, videos games, and even a TV series. Now they’re gonna be movie producers. What a country! (THR)

Sometimes running a successful movie studio depends on taking risks. Sure, the vast majority of movies that come out of major studios are designed to capitalize on the latest trends and appeal to as wide an audience as possible, but sometimes doing something dangerous can pay huge dividends at the box office. And someone at Paramount must know this, because they’re developing a movie in an untested genre: The superhero story.

All kidding aside, The Mighty really does look like a unique twist on the supehero movie, since it features a super-hero as the BAD guy, and a normal cop trying to shut him down. Here’s a plot synopsis:

“Welcome to the world of The Mighty! Alpha One – America’s first and only Super Hero – is supported by Section Omega, an entire police force devoted to assisting him in his quest for justice. Lt. Gabriel Cole has worked his way up the ranks of Section Omega and his connection to Alpha One reaches back to his own tragic childhood and an accident nobody could have survived. But when murder strikes at the top of the organization, the case falls into his lap, and he’ll begin to learn what being a hero is really all about!”

Sounds cool, right? The project, based on a comic by Keith Champagne and Peter Tomasi, is in the very early stages – there’s not even a script written yet. But I for one hope it gets off the ground. (Deadline)

Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton are like the Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt of the 60s and 70s, only with eighty less adopted children. They were Hollywood’s biggest scandal at one point, with both actors beginning an affair after making Cleopatra and eventually leaving their respective spouses to get married in 1964. Ten years later they divorced, but the scandalous couple were hounded by the paparazzi (back then, that was a novelty, unlike today’s 24-hour TMZ police state) and condemned by the pope, which is awesome.

The New 'Boardwalk Empire' Trailer is a Gangster's Paradise (Sans Coolio)

Paramount has optioned a book about Taylor and Burton called Furious Love by Sam Kashner and Nancy Schoenberger. The book was rejected 100 times for a movie deal, but Taylor’s recent death prompted interest from Natalie Portman and King’s Speech writer David Seidler, in addition to Paramount. Now the studio is trying to put Martin Scorsese in the director’s chair. This makes sense, as Scorsese is currently working on a Frank Sinatra biopic and spent years developing one about Dean Martin. Post-Rat Pack, it’s time to try Elizaburton. That’s what they would have been called, if only past gossip reporters had today’s name melding technology. (Deadline)

Everybody wants to see the alien monster in J.J. AbramsSuper 8. So, naturally, Paramount gave the interwebs a ton of new pictures showing the film’s many, many humans. Eh, what’s the big deal? It’s just gonna turn out to be a Cloverfield.

New ‘Super 8′ Clip: Kids Are Afraid Of Guns And Monsters

Super 8 follows a bunch of teens shooting their own monster movie, only to accidentally film and bear witness to a train crash… but what crazy thing was inside? The previews have been excellent so far, and I’m still recording movies of my lazy cat with their iPhone app. In the above pictures, you’ll see the unsuspecting townsfolk, the stylized, Spielberg-ian children, and the military men who will probably end up taking orders or at least ideas from the children. From the mouths of babes come unexpected solutions to stopping monsters.

Starring Elle Fanning, Kyle Chandler and AJ Michalka, Super 8 crashes into theaters June 10, 2011. (Cinema Blend)

Super 8 is in the midst of a big promotional push from Paramount. As part of that push, they’ve released yet another clip from the movie, this one showing that wacky gang of movie-making kids taking advantage of that train that explodes and runs off the tracks, setting the wheels of the mysterious plot in motion. Enjoy, and remember: Don’t mess around with trains. They’re dangerous even when they’re not exploding.

Whatever you do, keep thinking about Super 8, the new J.J. Abrams movie produced by Steven Spielberg. I know it’s easy to forget movie releases that throw pics and clips at you pretty much every day, but in case Schwarzenegger‘s secret kid is pushing Super 8′s June 10th release date temporarily out of your head, here’s some more preview stuff.

Above is a new clip, featuring the children of Super 8 doing what they do best: running and screaming. They also have a car apparently, which is pretty badass. Below are two new pictures of the kids staring at something. What are they staring at? Nobody knows and no one will ever know. Or, y’know, we’ll all find out in June.

However, the most novel new thing in Super 8 Land is Paramount releasing an iPhone app that turns your phone into Super 8 camera emulator, where you can film old-seeming movies. Get it here. You have to pull down the projector in the app to watch the movie, which is the kind of adorable little detail that really pisses me off. Still, it’s free (for now) and will definitely keep you entertained for a few precious minutes. (Dread Central)

Are you a hot, 18 to 20-year-old girl, anxious to take your top off? If so, we’d appreciate a photo in the comments section. *Crosses Fingers*

Meanwhile, you can also take part in the open audition for American Reunion, the latest American Pie movie. There are many returning cast members in this one, so you can chat on-set and in-person with Jason Biggs, Thomas Ian Nicholas and Mena Suvari. I know, better put on shades, cause the stars will be shining brightly where you’re going. Here’s a description of what Universal is looking for:

“Kara is the sweet girl next door you used to babysit… now she’s a senior in high school and a full blown hottie. We are looking for someone funny, smart and beautiful to be a part of this next installment of the American Pie franchise. [...] Upper frontal nudity is required.”

Upper frontal… but that would mean… the boob area. Nice.

Movie titles rarely make me rethink my choice of career. However, after a bit of deliberation, I think I might give up whatever it is I do for a living and become a hauntrepreneur. I’m just imagining living in a high rise haunted mansion, surrounded by ectoplasm-covered money, a hot ghost girl on each arm. That in the American Scream Dream.

Paramount purchased the Scott Rosenberg (Con Air) spec script The Hauntrepreneur, and Michael Bay‘s horror production company Platinum Dunes will produce. The story centers around an unusual man who builds a haunted house for a troubled family, who aren’t adjusting well to their new neighborhood. A haunted house is a great way to bring the family together. It’s why so many family therapist vampires recommend them.

Platinum Dunes is in pre-production on McG‘s Ouija movie for Universal. (Hollywood Reporter)

When it comes to just setting up a camera and seeing what happens, you get an overlap between the premise of Paranormal Activity and the philosophy behind many documentary filmmakers, as well as those super boring art movies you see in galleries.

Maybe that’s why Paramount is hiring Catfish documentarians Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman to direct Paranormal Activity 3. This will be the first narrative feature for the duo, so it’s a little odd that they’re giving them the keys to a highly anticipated franchise film. Eh, I guess documentaries and scripted movies are pretty much the same, especially if you fake a lot of stuff.

Oh, not only is this Joost and Schulman’s first narrative movie, but it has to be ready for theaters by October, and they don’t even have a finished script yet. Have fun, guys. (/Film)

When last we heard about Sacha Baron Cohen‘s The Dictator, they were looking for a female lead between Anna Faris, Gillian Jacobs and Kristen Wiig. Surprisingly, it looks like the hottest of those three ladies is gonna take the role. I’ve never heard of something like that happening before.

Faris has been offered the lead female part in The Dictator: an organic food store owner who meets Cohen’s ruthless dictator as he wanders around New York City. Who better than a hot girl Cohen’s character totally likes to tell him that his dictator ideas might not be so cool? A handful of boobage helps the messages go down. That was the original lyric in Mary Poppins, but they changed it for some reason.

The Dictator will be directed by Larry Charles, and Paramount‘s film is looking to invade theaters May 11, 2012. (Deadline)

All have failed.

Here’s the easy part of this story: writer David Koepp has been tapped to pen a new version of the untitled Jack Ryan origin story film formerly known as Moscow. How we got to this point is a little crazy, so I’m gonn break it down step-by-step:

1. After the success of Star Trek, Paramount hired writer Hossein Amini to script a Jack Ryan movie for Chris Pine.

2. Paramount buys a spec script called Dubai and tells writer Adam Cozad to make that the Jack Ryan movie.

3. Unhappy with that take, Paramount hired Anthony Peckham to rewrite Cozad’s script.

4. Then writer Steve Zaillian was brought on, but quickly abandoned ship.

5. Project goes into limbo.

6. David Koepp gets 7-figures to rewrite Cozad’s script. Which of the hundreds of drafts lying around Paramount’s offices will be the starting point for Koepp’s version is anyone’s guess.

7. 40 more writers are hired and fired.

8. Eight years later, the screenwriting robot is finally complete and Robo-Writer 9000 electoni-pens the perfect rewrite in 4 minutes. None of the human writers get an on-screen credit.

Jack Bender (“Lost”) is attached to direct. That much has not changed… for now. (Deadline)

Sacha Baron Cohen is holding court to determine who will be in his latest movie The Dictator. The following actors will try to curry Cohen’s favor, and have their rivals… eliminated.

Anna FarisKristen Wiig and “Community” star Gillian Jacobs are all vying for the female lead. Wiig is doing so with awkward line readings and tiny plastic hands. However, Cohen and his producers are still looking around, so a three-way cat fight between them might be for naught. Well, you might be able to sell the DVD of the fight itself, at least.

Meanwhile, Jason Mantzoukas “The League“) is in negotiations to play the sidekick to Cohen’s lead. Apparently his ability to improvise, or “generate top-of-the-head make-’em-ups,” as theater people call it, is highly valued for this loosely scripted movie. The plot is described as “the heroic story of a dictator who risked his life to ensure that democracy would never come to the country he so lovingly oppressed.” I’m sure Paramount is just wondering how big the merchandising potential will be, and whether or not we see a penis swinging around on-screen, up close.

Larry Charles (Borat, Bruno), an important member of the Cohen Crew, returns to direct.

These children are looking at something. But what? Because Super 8 is a J.J. Abrams movie, I’m gonna spend the next 10 hours studying these stills for clues. There’s bound to be a secret URL in there that goes to a website that says, “they’re totally looking at a Cloverfield.” Then I’ll post the findings on a message board, where I will debate trolls for a couple of days about whether or not my discovery was cool. *Adjusts Pocket Protector*

The Paramount movie is set to be released this June, and follows a group of kids who witness a train crash while filming a zombie movie… and watch an alien escape from the wreckage. Man, look at the mix of wonder and terror in their eyes in the night picture. This looks like an 80s kids movie, and I mean that in the best way possible. If this were made as a more modern movie about children, all three of those kids would have smirks on their faces and giant laser guns. Kid power sucks. (Cinema Blend)
