Eckhart, Bean, and Robb Join ‘Pan’, In Which Peter Pan Is A Depraved Kidnapper

“You can take your Channing Tatum, and you can stick him up your ass!”

That was one of the things that the producers of Pan said right before they inked Aaron Eckhart, AnnaSophia Robb, and Sean Bean. If you are anything like me and trying to immediately match these actors with the familiar roles, take a deep breath. The project is a re-imagining of the story in a very literal sense. According to this Screen Daily article, Eckhart will play Hook, “a tormented former detective on the trail of a childlike kidnapper.” Robb will play Wendy, the lone survivor of the kidnapper who aids in Hook’s pursuit. Sean Bean will be playing Smee, the only man Hook trusts on the force.

Hmmm. A childlike kidnapper sounds like it might just be the Peter Pan role. These producers just stepped on a steaming pile of “gritty” with this one. It will still be less than the Sandy Duncan version, though.

Guillermo del Toro, unsurprisingly, was originally set to direct this, but, in typical del Toro fashion, his eyes were bigger than his stomach and he found like three other projects he could use to freak people out. Ben Hibon, who is best known for crafting the animation sequence in Harry Party and the Deathly Hollows: Part 1, will be taking over helming duties.

Who can say “no” to a sexy, chiseled Peter Pan? Lord knows I can’t. I’m pretty sure Wendy can’t. And Sony just proved they are putty in his hands as well. Sony has purchased the project that had reportedly been named Peter Pan Begins. Thankfully, that title was wrong. It’s just called Pan, which sounds more like a Pixar movie about a goat, but it’s still better than Peter Pan Begins.

Sony is paying $1mm for the project, which doesn’t seem like much until one remembers that the source material is in the public domain, and consequently is free. The million bucks is best imagined as a cost of about $125,000 per each of Channing Tatum‘s abs. Which I still think is a bargain. I mean, have you seen them? I would pay twice that if I was still an executive at DreamWorks.

When the story about the project broke last week, it was known that the film wouldn’t remain unsold for long because of the familiarity of the material. It’s nice to know that even Hollywood’s predictability is predictable. It’s like a warm, lazy blanket during a storm.

Filming will begin just as soon as Tatum knocks out like 300 more jackknife sit-ups.(/Film)

It’s the film Disney doesn’t want you to see (besides those anti-Semitic ones). Ben Hibond (the guy who did the awesome animated sequence in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows) has signed on to direct Pan, the dark retelling of “Peter Pan.” Originally set up for Guillermo del Toro, the film re-imagines the story of Captain Hook as a disgraced detective on the hunt for a childlike kidnapper. God only knows what that sick freak is doing with those Lost Boys. All we know is that in direct opposition of his personal mantra, those children will NEVER speak up.

Sounds like a solid concept to me. I never trusted Peter Pan, what with his sprightly jaunt and soft features. The mischievous smile and that glass eye. You know what, maybe it’s just Sandy Duncan that I don’t trust. (Variety)
