Kelli Garner hangs with a cast of gorgeous ladies on ABC‘s “Pan Am.” Her career has been primarily in film up until this point, including parts in a few notable indie flicks like Thumbsucker and her role alongside Ryan Gosling in Lars and the Real Girl. She also made a notable appearance in The Aviator as Golden Age actress Faith Domergue and has been featured in two separate Green Day music videos.

Australian actress Margot Robbie takes to the skies with the cast of “Pan Am.” Best known for her role on Australian soap opera “Neighbours,” Robbie hasn’t done any work for an American audience before “Pan Am.” Hell of an American accent, though. Props indeed.

The Women Of ‘Pan Am’ Can Be Used As Flotation Devices

Pan Am doesn’t do much to support the notion that stewardesses (I’ll be goddamned if I’m ever calling them “flight attendants”) were once sex symbols. Sure, they’re hotter than the effeminate guys in the short sleeve shirts that are so prevalent now, but that’s a pretty low bar to clear. The concept of the show seems to be “pretty women in the 60′s,” so let’s take a look at how the gals fare.

The cast of Pan Am includes Christina Ricci, Margot Robbie (the hottest one by a country mile), French pixie Karine Vanasse, and Kelli Garner as women flying the friendly skies and no doubt negotiating the sexual politics of yesteryear. I don’t see a lot of nudity on the horizon, or ever, so we’ll just have to readjust our sexual fantasies to include tiny bottles of liquor and pillbox hats.

I would be remiss if I didn’t point out the similarities between this show and the high-water mark for the genre, Mad Men. However, with the tame standards set by the networks, it’s unlikely that this show will really give it a run for its money, perhaps serving as more of a Desperate Housewives to Mad Men‘s Sex and the City.

Unless Pan Am was a lesbian airline, I think that this show will probably only be appointment television for those with a stewardess fetish. This group includes myself.

Mike Vogel To Be The Vogeliest Pilot In ‘Pan Am’

If you’re one of the hip industry insiders who saw the pilot for the upcoming ABC drama Pan Am, you’ll know that Mike Vogel (Blue Valentine) was nowhere to be found within its sturdy fuselage. But now, Vogel fans everywhere have a reason to watch a show about flight attendants: He’s signed onto the series as “Dean … the captain of the amazing new Pan Am clipper, the Majestic, living every man’s dream, exploring the world and leading the crew.”

In the pilot, Dean was played by Jonah Lotan, but the role has been increased in size in light of Vogel’s involvement. Vogel’s joining Christina Ricci, Kellie Garner and Margot Robbie. And the Vogelites don’t have to wait until this fall to see him in Pan Am, because he’s going to be seen next in The Help. (Deadline)

“Pan Am”

A 60s”Mad Men“-like drama about stewardesses starring Christina Ricci, who weirdly isn’t in this clip. Maybe she’s in the bathroom?

“Once Upon A Time“

Yeah, I dunno. But it doesn’t look good. Something about Snow White, I think.

“Revenge”

An updated version of The Count of Monte Cristo starring Madeline Stowe, Emily VanCamp, and other people who probably haven’t read it.

“Charlie’s Angels“

You know “Charlie’s Angels“? This is that.

“The River“

Some kind of supernatural horror thing. Not based on the Jean Renoir film of the same name.

“Scandal”

A show about publicists starring Shonda Rhimes.

ABC Picks Up And Kills Series

In news that was signified by a herd of antelope stampeding through ABC headquarters, the network has announced a slate of cancellations, renewals, and pickups for the fall TV season. Don’t be sad, though - this is a process as inevitable as the blowing winds and growing grass.

Among the new pilots being given life are:

A “Charlie’s Angels” remake.
“Pan Am,” the 60s drama about flight attendants stewardesses flight attendants starring Christina Ricci.
An untitled Tim Allen sitcom that features the grunting comedian”fighting for his manhood in a world increasingly dominated by women.” Sigh.
“Apartment 23,” which used to have the word “bitch” in the title, but doesn’t anymore.
“Good Christian Belles,” another show that used to have the word “bitch” in the title, but doesn’t anymore. This makes ABC the leading broadcaster of TV shows that used to have the word “bitch” in their titles, but don’t anymore. Congratulatons, ABC!

Unfortunately, for new shows to be born, other shows must meet the hard, cold kiss of death. Here are the ABC series set to cross the River Styx:

“V,” a show about reptilian aliens that invade America. I guess this means the reptillians won.
“Mr. Sunshine,” which has been cancelled despite decent ratings, reportedly in the wake of star Matthew Perry going to rehab. Heh.

Christina Ricci Stars In 1960s Drama That’s Totally Not Just Like ‘Mad Men’

Two of Christina Ricci‘s recent big movies were Speed Racer and Alpha and Omega, so maybe it makes sense that she’s moving to television. The actress will make her first big TV project the pilot for ABC’s “Pan Am.” It’s a soapy drama that takes place in the swingin’ 60′s, about the lives of sexy stewardesses back when it was okay to call them that. And slap their butts in public.

Now I know what you’re thinking: 1960s drama? Swinging? Like “Mad Men?” Well, so far this project sounds nothing like”Mad Men.” Except that… uh, the central character in “Pan Am” also leads a double life.

Ricci will play the lead, Maggie, a fiery stewardess who is leading a double life – on duty she is a beautiful, perfectly groomed and poised stewardess, and off duty she is earthy, bohemian living among the beatniks and intellectuals of Greenwich Village.

We should probably also assume there’s a lot of drinking, infidelity, and who knows? Maybe a bunch of ad executives will become frequent fliers and we’ll hear all about how weird that new-fangled Volkswagon ad was every episode.

The folks in the cockpit are writer Jack Orman, director Thomas Schlamme and producer Nancy Hult Ganis, who was a former Pan Am flight attendant. That’s swell. (Deadline)
