Seeing how Paranormal Activity 3 was just released today in the heat of the Halloween season, let’s take a look at some other Hasbro properties that could easily be reimagined as horror films.

McG is shopping the film around town in the hopes that another studio might pick it up. Paramount, who have had hits with G.I. Joe and Transformers, have already passed. I think it’s best that McG use this film to contact itself. It seems dead. (Vulture)

The film is being positioned as a family adventure, which makes me unable to shake the comparisons to Jumanji, another movie predicated on a board game (albeit a fictional one) that tossed obstacles only tangentially related to each other at some kids until it decided to stop.

Or it could follow in the footsteps of Clue and simply defy all movie conventions with a cast of aging cult stars. But something tells me it’s gonna be like Jumanji.

Michael Bay and Hasbro execs are producing Ouija, and I assume top-quality storytelling is at the top of their to-do list. Plot details are still murky, though it’s been described as “a four-quadrant supernatural adventure centering around a family.” If there’s one thing movie-goers care about, it’s marketing quadrants. Ghosts care about them too. It’s why when Universal executives were considering the project, they asked the ghosts of film legends past via Ouija board, “does this movie hit all four quadrants?” The ghosts spelled out, “S-T-O-P… R-U-I-N-I-N-G… M-O-V-I-E-S…” (Hollywood Reporter)

Good news for people who love terrifying monsters: McG is back. Oh, and so is Monsters director Gareth Edwards.

McG is set to direct Ouija, a film based on the supernatural-themed board game produced by Hasbro. If you think that’s a stupid idea, don’t mention it to Universal Pictures. It’s the studio’s second boardgame-based production, with Battleship already well under way.

If that’s not your style, perhaps Gareth Edwards can interest you in a reboot of the Godzilla franchise. The director is reportedly on board to write and direct the project for Warner Bros.

While these projects might not be the most original in the world, they do allow me to point out that Hollywood is all out of ideas, which marks the 214th time I’ve done so since I began working for ScreenJunkies back in June of 2009. That fact might make it seem like I’m not very original, myself. But as the rapper once said, don’t hate the player, hate the game…the game of Ouija. (Source: Latino Review 1 and 2)

File this under “Ugh.” McG and Breck Eisner are actually battling it out over who GETS to direct the big screen adaptation of Ouija. That’s right. They’re both willingly going out for the project. And they haven’t been the only directors knocking down the studio doors. Both Sylvain White and Pierre Morel have tried to get their hands on the all-telling planchette. It led them straight to NO.

Let’s remember, Oujia won’t be a horror movie like an intelligent person would assume, but instead a big action-adventure flick not unlike Jumanji. Would McG or Eisner be a better choice for this kind of project? I say give the job to Eisner. I enjoyedThe Crazies and he has some experience directing action, even though it was doing Sahara. I, like most others, reacted poorly when it was announced that Platinum Dunes are making a movie based off Hasbro’s Ouija Board. "That’s dumb," I thought. "There won’t even be any room to work in French martial arts." Oh, how short-sighted I was, friends.

Taken director Pierre Morel is on the shortlist to direct the film. That means this will be the ass-kickingest game of Ouija ever played. All I see in my head when I think of this is a child-version of Liam Neeson breaking his older sister’s fingers one by one until she admits she moved the planchette. Hopefully, he’ll be able to get Neeson himself. You know, if Milton Bradley doesn’t have him under retainer. (LA Times)

While promoting A Nightmare on Elm Street, Brad Fuller has been talking up some of his other half-cooked films. For instance, what’s the deal with Ouija?

"‘Ouija’ isn’t really a horror movie per se, it’s definitely more of a big action-adventure movie along the lines of…I gotta be careful what I compare it to [cough-JUMANJI-cough, cough]. But you know, it’s like a big action-adventure movie. And that script…I’ve read a couple pages of it, it seems good."

I have an irrational fear of Ouija boards and ghosts ever since I watched Witchboard in the late 80′s. (Note: it was before the Internet existed and my best chance at seeing Tawny Kitaen nude (Note: Tawny Kitaen was once worth seeing nude.).)
