Warning! Spoilers Ahead!

Five movies after the last of The Lord of the Rings trilogy, in which he played eternally-fare, arrow-wielding Legolas, Orlando Bloom teamed up with Cameron Crowe to make a movie steeped in sentimentality, forced “moments”, and a pretentious soundtrack. Kristen Dunst looks like she’s competing for hipster of the decade, and I am not even really sure why Paula Deen is among the cast. That said, Orlando’s American accent not withstanding, Elizabethtown is one of those movies that never got a fair chance. Yes, everything I said is true, but Elizabethtown is one of those movies I can’t shake, and ever time I bring it up to someone who has seen it, they can’t help but gush about how much they love it. How can a movie so obviously flawed be so good?

The plot of the movie is pretty straightforward. Orlando plays Drew Baylor, a business and marketing genius about to launch a shoe that will change the world of covered feet. On the release of his grand invention, he discovers the product is a dismal failure which will lose his company over 900 million dollars. Later that night, his girlfriend dumps him, and just as he’s about to commit suicide, he gets a phone call from his sister telling him his father has died. He’s then asked to take his father’s favorite blue shirt to Elizabethtown, Kentucky for the funeral.

We never meet Drew’s father. We never see them together, and when the father appears in flashbacks or family photos, he’s so unfamiliar that one doesn’t really feel anything for him. A movie maker of Cameron Crowe’s caliber knows what he’s doing, however. The emotional thread of the film is that Drew, because of the flop of his multi-million-dollar shoe, can’t process his father’s death. He’s numb and can’t cry over the fact that his father has died. In this, Drew’s numbness mirrors the viewer’s apathy toward to the father character. I’m not sure that once Drew releases his emotions during the road trip that punctuates the film’s end is enough for us to have the same reaction, but I definitely shed a tear every time I see that moment, which we’ll get to in second.

On his way to Kentucky, Drew meets Claire Colburn, played by Kristen Dunst. Her over-familiar, bubbly hipster schtick is overwrought and borders on tedious throughout the whole film. In fact, I credit her strange character, and the subsequent relationship she has with Drew, with overshadowing the rest of the film as bad. Herein is the movie’s largest flaw. It’s marketed as a romantic comedy, when really it’s about acceptance and grief. Ignoring the banal relationship these two troubled, yet beautiful, people undergo is the best way to watch Elizabethtown. The relationship aside, there are some truly poignant moments in the film.

In Elizabethtown, Drew is reunited with the Southern family he’s never known. These are the first of the more poignant moments the film offers. There’s nothing quite as special as being welcomed by a group of people who love you and are related to you for no other reason than you are family. The montage of him being introduced to his family and friends in that big southern house reminds one of being a child, surrounded by all the adults I naturally took for granted but were gone too soon. You can almost smell the food and hear the gossip and television in the background.

The other poignant moment is the one I mentioned earlier, when Drew finally succumbs to the emotions of his father’s death while on the road trip Claire has constructed for his return to the west coast. With his father’s ashes seat-belted beside him, Drew takes his father on the road trip they never had, scattering his ashes at some of the country’s most important landmarks. The moments at the landmarks are cheesy, but the solo car moments are beautiful. It’s those moments in the car, those deep revelations only found on long car trips with oneself that bring Drew, and me, to tears. You can see Drew’s mind working through the past, letting things go, and yet despite the shoe debacle, the new girl with whom he’s about to reunite, and the huge family he just rediscovered, it’s when he’s by himself that he remembers a single moment playing with his father as a child. We see a young drew pumping his hand up and down, his father doing the same, and then we cut to adult Drew in the car, finally facing responsibility, doing the same gesture, crying his heart out.

Along with a few moments of pure comedy—Susan Sarandon’s eulogy and tap dance routine, the other guests at Drew’s hotel, and Alec Baldwin’s cameo—these aforementioned poignant moments make this movie a personal favorite and an un-heralded cult film. If you’ve never taken a road trip with your dad, if you’ve never allowed yourself to be swallowed by your family, you should watch this movie. And if none of those things sound appealing to you, you should watch it merely for the fact that Orlando Bloom is so beautiful in regular, non-elf clothing, that it’s almost uncomfortable to behold. Almost.

Did you know that the Three Musketeers often dabbled in air-to-air combat? Alexander Dumas didn’t know that, but director Paul W. S. Anderson did, so it’s only natural that he would introduce Victorian airship dogfights into his adaptation of the literary classic.

Beyond that, we’re looking at an evil empire, somehow more that three musketeers, and the world’s most dangerous assassin, who happens to be a lady. That’s no typo…a lady assassin. Crazy!

Points for the film for casting Orlando Bloom, Milla Jovavich, and Christoph Waltz. Points against the film for having zero songs that feature the soothing voices of Sting, Bryan Adams, and Rod Stewart. We’ll say that’s a push.

In one year, Swedish actor Joel Kinnaman has covered quite a bit of ground, having made the leap from “breakout star” to “guy who can pretty much play the same roles as Orlando Bloom.” Hmm. When I phrase it that way, it sounds more like a big step backwards than progress. Regardless, he will be the new co-star of Lola Verus, a romantic comedy starring Greta Gerwig as a woman who, after getting dumped, takes stock of her life. Like so many other romantic comedies. I hope she encounters a free spirit!

Orlando Bloom was originally tapped for the role, but he dropped out of late-stage negotiations, leaving producers scrambling for a replacement before production starts later this month in New York. Kinnaman’s buzz almost certainly preceded him in the negotiations, with prominent roles in the upcoming Safehouse with Ryan Reynolds, David Fincher‘s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and AMC‘s “The Killing.”

Wow. He’s like a Swedish James Franco, or “Jann Franko,” if you will.

As previously rumored, the two Hobbit movies from director Peter Jackson now have official titles. The first one will have the title The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, while part 2 will be known as The Hobbit: There and Back Again. As for release dates, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is set to come out on December 14, 2012, while The Hobbit: There and Back Again has a release date of about a year later on December 13, 2013.

In case you’re a little rusty on your Tolkien, both of these titles come from chapters of the book (“An Unexpected Party” and “There and Back Again”).  Now, since I don’t have anything else to say about these confirmed titles, here’s a massive list of the cast:

Good news for all the Legoliacs out there – as previously rumored, Orlando Bloom has been confirmed via Peter Jackson on Facebook to play America’s Favorite Elf, Legolas, in Peter Jackson‘s The Hobbit. So, unfortunately, my prediction that they would cast Jon Hamm in the part instead has turned out to be inaccurate. Here’s Jackson on the news:

“Ten years ago, Orlando Bloom created an iconic character with his portrayal of Legolas. I’m excited to announce today that we’ll be revisiting Middle Earth with him once more. I’m thrilled to be working with Orlando again. Funny thing is, I look older—and he doesn’t! I guess that’s why he makes such a wonderful elf.”

Whoa, way to insult the guy, Peter. Although I guess in some cultures being compared to an elf is considered a compliment.

Well hello there, cowpokes! I can tell by that gleam in yer eye that you’re a-lookin’ for casting updates coming out of the Cannes Film Festival. Well saddle up, pardner, because here we go! Yee-haw.

First up out of the corral is Dennis Quaid, who’s joining Jeremy Irons and Bradley Cooper in The Words. Quaid will play “Clay Hammond, a celebrated writer, in the tale in which Cooper’s character, another writer, discovers the price he must pay for stealing the work of another man, played by Irons.” Sounds like a rootin’-tootin’ good time, and also a meditation on creativity and plagiarism. (The Hollywood Reporter)

Next up under the branding iron are cowpokes Orlando Bloom and Nick Nolte, who’ve been cast in “coming-of-age road-trip comedy” Idea in America along with Stanley Tucci and Cristiana Capotondi. (The Hollywood Reporter)

The no. 3 spot on this rodeo is held by Helen Hunt, who’s a-gonna direct and star in romantic comedy Ride. A romantic comedy starring and directed by Helen Hunt? YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE-HAW!

Finally, we got England‘s Number 1 Wrangler Colin Firth, who will play the lead role in an untitled comedy to be directed by Dante Ariola from a script written by Becky Johnston. Here’s a plot synopsis, which rolls through your field of vision like a tumblin’ tumbleweed: “Firth plays a man who hates his job and is hated by his ex-wife and son. Feeling he missed his one shot at living the dream, he fakes his death and buys a new identity.” (Deadline)

Orlando Bloom has Hobbit movies to make, but I guess Legolas doesn’t have too big a role, because he might wedge a terrible sounding romantic comedy into his schedule.

Bloom may star alongside Greta Gerwig (Arthur) in Fox Searchlight‘s Lola Versus, directed by Daryl Wein, written by Wein & Zoe Lister-Jones, and Jones who will co-star. One of the perks of writing the script is penning a part and being like, “hmm, you know who’d be great for this? …Me.

The romantic comedy is about a girl who gets dumped at the alter by her college sweetheart, then goes on a journey as a single woman. The ticking clock is: she’s about to turn 30. I can hear you gasping through the internet. Maybe Bloom will play the guy who helps her on her journey, and turns out to be “the one.” That’s a twist you’d never see coming. Or, you know, the opposite of that.

In June, the production team hopes to begin shooting in New York. (Variety)

A lot of the original Lord of the Rings fellowship is finding a place in The Hobbit, whether they were in the book or not. Orlando Bloom gave good indications that Peter Jackson wants Legolas in The Hobbit, while he was at the press junket for his latest movie, Sympathy for Delicious.

“I’m really excited about going to see Pete again,” Bloom said. “That’ll be great. I’m looking forward to it. It’s still a littl up in the air but the idea of working with Pete would be fantastic. It’s looking like it and I can’t really talk too much about it at this point.”

It must be pretty close to certain though, given this development. “I just got given the script to piece through so it’s quite exciting.”

Bloom got the whole script, not just Legolas’s pages, although really there couldn’t be much of a spoiler for a classic novel. It would have to be a younger Legolas though, so Bloom joked about having to get back in shape.

“Are you telling me I’ve put on weight in the last 10 years?”

After Delicious, Bloom will next be seen in The Three Musketeers, but not buckling swash as it were. “When The Three Musketeers came along, it was like the Duke of Buckingham would be a fantastic role because it’s a completely different thing for me as opposed to being a musketeer. I get to be the giant petulant child in many ways that the Duke of Buckingham turns out to be.”

The post ‘Chinatown’ Writer Towne To Pen Mini-Series About Pompeii appeared first on Screen Junkies.

Academy Award winning screenwriter Robert Towne (Chinatown, The Last Detail) has signed on to write a mini-series based on the best selling Robert Harris novel “Pompeii.” The novel was originally going to be adapted by Roman Polanski and made into a feature starring Orlando Bloom and Scarlett Johansen, but the writers strike came along and messed that whole thing up. Now Ridley Scott has acquired it and wants it to go forward as a television mini-series, with the great Towne handling writing duties.  Here’s the plot summary:

The period-based tale is centered on Marcus Attilius Primus, a young Roman engineer who works on the Aqua Augusta aqueduct that feeds the ancient cities of the Bay of Naples. While battling a vile real estate speculator who has a water embezzlement scheme, Primus learns that Vesuvius is about to erupt and races to warn his true love before it’s too late.

Sounds intriguing, and if you ask me, this version is a lot more appealing than the proposed Polanski version. Not just because of Towne, but because Orlando Bloom as the lead in an epic is just so, um… pre writers strike. (The Playlist)

The title Sympathy For Delicious made me think Mark Ruffalo‘s directorial debut was a Food Network pilot or a terrible blog written by a fat, 45-year-old woman. It’s neither of those things, in fact.

Ruffalo helms this movie about a DJ who gets paralyzed. Okay. Then the DJ suddenly develops the power to heal people, but not himself. Uhm… okay? And did I mention the movie’s called Sympathy For Delicious? It’s hard to get over the plot and name to see the great cast in this trailer, which includes Orlando Bloom (as a character named “The Stain,” ho boy), Laura Linney, Juliette Lewis and some guy named Mark Ruffalo. Who’d he have to blow to get a lead role?

Written by and starring Christopher Thornton as DJ Delicious (repeat “blow” joke here, too – thank you), Sympathy For Delicious premiered at Sundance in January.

Orlando Bloom, whose bread and butter includes traipsing around English countrysides in robes and chain mail, has been out of the spotlight of starring roles for a few years, but he’s about to reclaim his throne as the king of lushly photographed period pieces in writer/director William Nunez’s “The Laureate.”

Bloom will play poet Robert Graves, and the film will focus on Graves’ relationship with two women: Artist Nancy Nicholson (Kerry Condon) and American poet Laura Riding (Imogen Poots). Apparently the writer had an open relationship with the two women, and they all lived together for quite some time, until Graves began to like Riding better. Pun intended? Sure, why not.

The actor, who’s been relatively absent from prominent feature films for the last few years, seems to be back, both with this film and Paul W.S Anderson’s new Three Musketeers, as well as a rumored return to the role of Legalos in Peter Jacksons upcoming The Hobbit. He also seems to be back in time too, as all these films are period pieces. I’d like to show him an iPad and see if he gets scared. “AAAH, future man!” he’d say. Me and Bloom, boy do we have fun. No photos yet of co-stars Logan Lerman, Mads Mikkelsen, Matthew Macfayden, Ray Stevenson, or Juno Temple, but I'm sure they look just as ridiculous. I'll keep you posted. Orlando Bloom Dons Floppy Hat For ‘Three Musketeers’ http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/orlando-bloom-dons-floppy-hat-for-three-musketeers/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/orlando-bloom-dons-floppy-hat-for-three-musketeers/#comments Mon, 24 May 2010 12:12:14 +0000 Defy Media   Orlando Bloom won't be shaving that weird facial hair anytime soon. The Elizabethtown actor has been cast as the Duke of Buckingham in Paul W.S. Anderson's The Three Musketeers. British comedian James Corden will also join the cast as the servant Planchet. Previously cast are Christoph Waltz, Logan Lerman, Matthew MacFadyen, Ray Stevenson, Luke Evans, Mads Mikkelsen, and, of course, Anderson's wife/zombie slayer Milla Jovovich. Considering Anderson's film resume of mostly videogame adaptations, I'm really impressed by these casting announcements. It looks like this 3D take on the classic is picking up a lot of talented actors. And Milla Jovovich. (Variety)
