New ‘Dredd’ Trailer Looks Pretty Cool, Actually

Moviegoers could be forgiven for assuming that anything with the word “Dredd” in the title is a piece of shit, thanks to notably shitty piece of shit Judge Dredd starring Sylvester Stallone. But if you dig a little deeper, you’ll find that the comics featuring the Judge Dredd character are pretty well-respected, and now this trailer comes out and actually looks really cool and I don’t know what to think anymore.

As if that weren’t enough, this trailer also has Olivia Thirlby, famous for playing sweet smartasses in stuff like Juno and The Wackness doing what can be called for lack of a better term “kicking ass.” The lesson is clear: Don’t watch the trailer for Dredd if you’re not prepared to have all of your preconceived notions rocked to their cores. Or if you don’t like guns.

Olivia Thirlby may be going mainstream. Best known for roles in indie flicks like Juno and The Wackness, Thirlby will star this week in effects-heavy alien invasion movie The Darkest Hour. Joining her is fellow indie notable Emile Hirsch, who plays the male lead. Despite the bigger-budget nature of the film, Darkest Hour looks like it’ll fly largely under the radar, with little buzz surrounding its upcoming release. Next year, Thirlby will appear in Dredd and Nobody Walks.

Well, this one’s interesting. It’s the first trailer for Chris Gorak’s The Darkest Hour and it finds a clever way to not make the attacking aliens the same cliche insectoid design that we’ve seen so much of in recent years. It does so by not showing them at all. They are invisible aliens. Kind of like ghosts but with an organized agenda.

And though it’s just Emile Hirsch, Olivia Thirlby, Rachael Taylor, Max Minghella, and Joel Kinnaman literally running away from nothing, it still looks pretty good. Definitely like the way that the aliens disintegrate their victims by pulling them into their force-fields. We’ve been discussing it here at Screen Junkies HQ and it doesn’t seem like a bad way to go. Way better than drowning.

So far our only looks at Dredd have revealed Karl Urban in a helmet but today, there’s a new look at a few of the other cast members. Both helmeted and non.

Check out the first look at Olivia Thirlby as Judge Cassandra Anderson and Lena Headey as the villian Ma-Ma. You’ll also find a few shots of Judge Dredd running from explosions and kicking in doors. John Krasinski To Smile Smugly In ‘Nobody Walks’?

Steve Carrell is leaving”The Office.” John Krasinski is also most-likely leaving “The Office,” but just briefly to work on an indie movie. You’ll still have ol’ Jim around next season to look at the camera knowingly, and keep the conversation about that baby going.

Krasinski is in talks to star in Nobody Walks, along with Rosemarie Dewitt (“United States of Tara“) and Olivia Thirlby (the best friend in Juno). The film is about a young artist who disrupts the life of a Los Angeles family by moving in with them. Since it’s Los Angeles, I assume the artist ruins the family by getting everyone addicted to cocaine. The film is co-written and directed by Ry Russo-Young (You Won’t Miss Me) – her co-writer is Lena Dunham (Tiny Furniture).

Olivia Thirlby Joins De Niro And Dano In ‘Suck City’

Olivia Thirlby is on an acting tear. The actress just wrapped the Judge Dredd reboot as well as The Darkest Hour, and she’s just signed on for a role in Paul Weitz’s adaptation of Nick Flynn’s memoir Another Bullshit Night In Suck City. The film, about the relationship between a father (Robert De Niro) and son (Paul Dano) that occurs while the son is employed as a caseworker in a Boston homeless shelter, will be a Focus Features production. Thirlby will play Dano’s love interest who gets him the job at the shelter.

The book is supposed to be terrific, so let’s hope that even though the film version is chock full of De Niro, Dano, homeless people, and of course, Boston, it doesn’t come out reeking of Oscar bait. (Deadline)

Olivia Thirlby To Shadow ‘Judge Dredd’

Olivia Thirlby, 2008′s It Girl (non-Kat Dennings version), will be joining Karl Urban when he shoves his gavel up bad guys’ butts in the Judge Dredd reboot. Thirlby is best known for her turns in Juno and The Wackness. It looks like she’s attempting to break into bigger, less-shoe gazey projects between this and The Darkest Hour. In other words, momma wants a pool.

For Dredd, she will play a young telepath who shadows Dredd on his beat. C’mon, do you really need to read minds to know where he’s sticking that gavel? (Up butts.) (Variety)

Olivia Thirlby Joins ‘The Darkest Hour’

Olivia Thirlby seems ready to break away from her moody indie roots. The star of The Wackness, Juno, and movies I rent accidentally on Netflix has just been cast in Chris Gorak’s The Dark Hour. In the film, she’ll play an American traveller in Moscow when aliens invade unexpectedly. Thirlby will fight for survival alongside other tourists in the sci-fi epic from the production designer turned director. Between all the random attacks and driving on the wrong side of the road, it doesn’t sound that much different than a trip to Detroit.

Filming will begin this summer in Moscow at producer Timur Bekmambetov‘s custom-built production facility where film shoots you. (THR)

‘New York, I Love You’ Actress Olivia Thirlby

Honest to blog, it’s Olivia Thirlby! I hope I just made your skin crawl with that tid bit of too-clever-for-its-own-good dialogue from Juno. Olivia delivered it as best as she could, though, and turned the character of Juno’s semi-slutty best friend Leah into a memorable one. Now you can look for her as “Actress” in New York, I Love You, where hopefully the screenwriter put words in her mouth that people actually say in real life.

A word from Olivia: “Last year’s Sundance was a big deal, This year, I don’t care what I wear. For me, it’s just another crazy day.“

Sounds like a day in the life of me, Olivia. I’m wearing a trash bag secured to my body with a poorly knotted rope-belt, and I’m pretty sure they’re serving dove tacos at lunch. Just another crazy day at the office!
