Are his abs up to the challenge?

Since breaking out in Animal Kingdom, Joel Edgerton is quickly establishing himself as the less violent option to Russell Crowe. The star of the recent The Thing is now in talks for another prequel. He’s up for the part of Themosticles in 300: Battle of Artemisia, the general who led the Greeks in battle against the Persians in 480 BC.

The action takes place ten years before Gerard Butler airbrushed his abs in defense of Sparta, and spans the decade long battle. Seems odd that they would cast an Australian to play Greek. This is the break-out role Zach Galifianakis has been waiting for.

Noam Murro has a schedule conflict.

UPDATE: Deadline reports that 20th Century Fox are scrambling to find a director. The new candidates are Attack The Block‘s Joe Cornish, Drive‘s Nicolas Winding Refn, Fast Five‘s Justin Lin, and the previously mentioned John Moore.

John McClane is having a bad day. Not so much a having-to-kill-terrorists-with-little-to-no-weapons bad day, but a bad day just the same. Noam Murro, who was attached to direct Bruce Willis in Die Hard 5, has had to leave the project. It’s reported that a scheduling conflict with 300: Battle of Artemisia will prevent Murro from taking the project, but I prefer to think his unfavorable Amazon customer review of “The Return of Bruno” was the actual reason.

But that won’t slow down Die Hard 5. Behind Enemy Lines and Max Payne director John Moore has already been offered the project. Should he choose to direct, he’ll be working from a script by Skip Woods (X-Men Origins: Wolverine), that sees McClan fighting terrorists in Russia with his two sons. We’re not exactly sure of the plot details, so as of right now let’s assume a McClane family reunion in Nizhny Novgorod in taken under siege. (via The Playlist)

Wait, why would the guy who did 'Smart People' be directing a spin-off of '300'?

“This is madness!” Noam Murro was heard to shout before being kicked into the giant Warner Brothers pit by a muscular studio executive. “This! Is! 300: Battle of Artemisia!” Said the studio executive.

Artemisia, which is based on the upcoming comic by Frank Miller, author of the original 300 (and a bunch of other cool stuff, like Ronin and The Dark Knight Returns), and will focus on the character of Xerxes (in fact, the movie used to be titled Xerxes), a villain from the first movie. He won’t be a villain in this one, though:

“He’s a man in search of godhood after the death of his father, battling an Athenian warlord named Themistocles. The story takes place over the course of several years, but the focal point is the battle of Artemisium, which occured in 480 BC.”

<a class='img' href='http://www.screenjunkies.com/gallery/immortals-is-lookin-pretty-pretty-pretty-300-y/' title=''Immortals' Is Looking Pretty, Pretty '300'-y'>
4 photos'Immortals' Is Looking Pretty, Pretty '300'-y

And good news for all the Zack Snyder fans out there – while he won’t be directing this, he did work on the script. So, expect a lot of slow-motion in the dialogue. And Murro, who previously directed the indie drama Smart People (aka “The Exact Opposite of 300“), is said to be directing Artemisia in the same visual style that Snyder used for the first movie. Tonight we dine in Hell, etc. (The Hollywood Reporter)

Unknown‘s Jaume Collet-Serra and Die Hard 5‘s Noam Murro are the final two in consideration to be passed Zack Snyder‘s ceremonial directing headdress to take the helm of 300: Battle Of Artemisia (formerly known as Xerxes). Snyder, who is currently busy with Man Of Steel, will come on in a producer’s capacity and force both men to try to kick one another down a deep pit of doom. The same pit made famous by the film Meet the Spartans.
Wow. Once the ball gets rolling, these projects pick up momentum quickly!

Wow. Once the ball gets rolling, these projects pick up momentum quickly! News broke this morning that 20th Century Fox was looking for a script, and Bruce Willis was interviewing directors. Well, some seven hours later, it appears that a script has been decided upon and a director has been selected. I always admired Bruce Willis‘ proactivity. (No, I didn’t.)

The chosen director Die Hard 5 is Noam Murro, the director of Smart People, a 2008 dramedy that featured Dennis Quaid, Lowell from “Wings,” and Sarah Jessica Parker. I said I admired Willis’ proactivity, not his judgment. Maybe this Murro guy was the last guy Willis interviewed before he had to catch a flight or something. That said, it’s refreshing that the producers (Willis included) looked outside the usual group of one-note action directors. This director may not be a big name, but in the twilight of a franchise’s life, that could be a big blessing.

And the script 20th Century Fox has chosen a script by Skip Woods, about which no details have been divulged, but expect John McClaine to have a bad day and an unnecessarily stylish villain. (Deadline)
